Kevin Moore is BY FAR the most creative and melodically interesting keyboardist they have had and a great composer in his own right. His solo project that he did after leaving Dream Theater is called Chroma Key and released 3 great albums: Dead air for radios, You go now and Graveyard Mountain Home. You go now is btw one of my favourite albums of any genre.
I was so lucky to be introduced to this album when I was around 20 years old (23 years ago...) it has completely shaped my taste in music to what it is today, one of my all time favorites for sure! so glad you are checking it out! You've got to go with "Scenes from a Memory" next!
It's so great to discover this with you together again. It basically was THE album that brought me to progressive music. I heard it over and over again and even now after 32 years it never gets borning and I still love it so much. Even there were other great albums by DT later and even there were other great bands and project I love so much, there will always be a deep connection and memories to THIS album.
Hell yes Jim! Great album, keep em coming. Hopefully we get back to Avenged Sevenfold soon. Their album The Stage is a crazy prog metal masterpiece. I think you own the Nightmare album, that’s got awesome prog elements as well, but it’s a bit more metal than prog. Btw: Mike Portnoy stepped in as the drummer on the Nightmare album because the original drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan died just before recording the album
Nice one,Jim! This album has always been my top fav by them--simply because of the melodic songwriting and consistency amid the variety...if that makes sense. Saw the tour for this twice--they were mind-blowing as a new identity on the rock scene. WE couldn't believe a band could be THIS talented. They pretty much invented prog metal. And of course we have lots of this style about these days. But this album is the template for it all. You'll adore side 2 as well. Enjoy, T
Queensryche and Fates Warning have started the progmetal, but Dream Theater brought it close to perfection ... and they still do, as I could see on Oct 23rd live in Cologne 🤘
For me the first two tracks are the weakest funnily enough. I mean they are great but the rest of the album is even better. I love that the whole first two songs are basically all in 4/4, they would never do that again.
Take the time was one of my favourites right from the first listening ... the whole composition is great ... and their is a "murderer-version" (as we say in german) on the World Chaos DVD, where at the end of the song John P and Jordan with his portable keyboard ( I call it the AXE) are duelling and it seems they don't want to end ... seeing this live is so great 🤘🤘
Another day - the owner of the studio was Jay Beckenstein of Spyro Gyra. One day he walked in and they asked him if he knew who could play on Another day and he said, where are the notes and he did it 👍
Oh yes Jim this will be a fun listen! If you'll ever going to do another DT album reaction i'll suggest to you Metropolis pt. 2 Scenes from a memory, absolutely brilliant!!
Hey Jim after hearing that new extreme song Rise I got hooked on them This album reminds me of extremes 3 sides to every story it’s a kinda 3 side concept album and maybe progressive there are some the guitar hooks that are definitely taken or influenced by Nuno Bettencourt in this Dream theater album also some of his guitar playing sounds like one of the great guitarists vito Brata from a band called white lion. Any ways I SERIOUSLY recommend you give that Extreme album a listen to I’m not sure if it was well received when it was released as it from what I’ve heard is far ahead of some of the bands I’ve heard of from the 90’s anyways thanks for playing that dream theater album it sounds awesome and I’m gonna buy it thanks to you
James LaBrie had a phenomel voice back in the day, and I adore his timbre in the lower register. Too bad his voice is pretty much gone now. Awake, Scenes from a Memory and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence are great albums too, I hope you'll check them out!
Oh, forgot to add that the sound from JP with his Ibanez is godly on these 90's albums. I still sometimes watch the "Rock Discipline" from John Petrucci. Absolutely fantastic sound on rhythm and lead parts
I started from the very beginning, loving the first album, but when James came, it was perfect 🤘 after 50 times listening I even liked Awake a little better ... even without a "radio hit", but with many hit songs for me
Fun fact: the song "Surrounded" has sometimes been mixed live with either Marillion's "Sugar Mice" and/or Pink Floyd's "Mother" as they use the same (or similar) chord progressions
Great album. Still love the debut more, probably because I heard it first (when it came out) and I never was a big James LaBrie fan. I basically checked out of DT in the late 90s because frankly they've been doing the same thing over and over, and many albums are interchangeable for me. That's actually the opposite of progressive.
Wow, haven't heard or reacted to IAW yet? That was the transformational album for me that brought me into the world of prog. Enjoy! Side 1 was my favorite side initially.
To be honest, this passed me by when it first came out but I do know that Pull Me Under is often regarded (probably incorrectly) as the genesis of prog metal, was on MTV a lot in the US and is the closest DT ever came to a hit single. It's a tour de force and deserves its reputation. Another Day tries hard but the sax hangs around like a bad smell. (I'm glad that we finally got a bad sax after the past three or four have been quite good. Prejudice restored!) Take the Time is a bit "of it's time" though has good instrumental breaks and Surrounded is where metal runs through some of prog's greatest hits (definite Genesis and early Marillion influence though no Peter Gabriel impressions) I'll be tuning in for part 2 whenever and wherever that might be.
Hi Ken, so you've never seen Dream Theater live ? It's just a great experience to see the guys play many of their complicated songs just like they never had to practice for it 😆
DT are a bit hit and miss for me but Images and Words and Scenes From a Memory are two of the best prog albums ever, Haken are the only other band I have heard that have made music at that level.
Do you know that Mike Portnoy picked Haken to be his band for his "Shattered Fortress- Project" ? except for the drummer but he brought in Eric Gillette of Neal Morse Band. Saw this live in 2017 .... awesome memory and they did what Mike couldn't do with DT, they played the whole 12-step-suite plus several great DT tracks such as 5 tracks of Scenes incl Finally Free plus Mirror ... so happy, I was there 🤘🤘
First side is amazing but second side is what made prog today. Extra ordinary album.
Jim's gonna love "Under a Glass Moon" and "Learning to Live".
So complicated yet so easy for the mind to follow and so tasty for the ears. The definition of perfection.
This is peak Dream Theater.
plus Awake which is not so easy accessible ... it took me several runs ... with headphones ... but then 🤘🤘🤘 James at his peak👍
Best album ever made. Vocals are incredible and instrumentation is out of this world. I have heard this album 100's of times and it never gets old.
the ending of Pull me under always surprises people 🤣

Patience 😆 we're going step by step 🤘

This was my first DT album so it will always be my fav.
"this is called Surrounded" and I'm like, GOOD LUCK. That guitar/keys solo bit still haunts me.
Such a fun, uplifting album. Im not a big fan of later DT, but this album and Train of Thought hold a special place in my heart.
Nice one,Jim! This album has always been my top fav by them--simply because of the melodic songwriting and consistency amid the variety...if that makes sense. Genre-defining milestone for me. Great reaction! :)
Queensryche and Fates Warning have started the progmetal, but Dream Theater brought it close to perfection ... and they still do, as I could see on Oct 23rd live in Cologne 🤘
The first two songs are extraordinary and in general the first side of the album is amazing!!!✌️👍
For me the first two tracks are the weakest funnily enough. I mean they are great but the rest of the album is even better. I love that the whole first two songs are basically all in 4/4, they would never do that again.
@@petrilampela that's true ... I just listened to In the presence of enemies and thought for the hundredth time WTF😆🤘
Take the time was one of my favourites right from the first listening ... the whole composition is great ... and their is a "murderer-version" (as we say in german) on the World Chaos DVD, where at the end of the song John P and Jordan with his portable keyboard ( I call it the AXE) are duelling and it seems they don't want to end ... seeing this live is so great 🤘🤘
Take the Time and Learning to Live are probably my favorites. Pull me Under is how I discovered them, like most people, so it's up there as well.
Train of thought is my favourite DT album. It's heavy and has some incredible riffs and solos.
it's definitely the heaviest in its whole entirety ... great to see 5 tracks of the album ... either live ... as I did .. or on the Budokan DVD🤘
Another day - the owner of the studio was Jay Beckenstein of Spyro Gyra. One day he walked in and they asked him if he knew who could play on Another day and he said, where are the notes and he did it 👍
the seed is sown 🤘😄 ... now I'll listen
good job Rudi!!! Next one Scenes from a Memory? ;)
Oh yes Jim this will be a fun listen! If you'll ever going to do another DT album reaction i'll suggest to you Metropolis pt. 2 Scenes from a memory, absolutely brilliant!!
It'll come, but we do it step by step

Hi Jim,
Well known decent progressive metal album. I love it.
Pull me under takes 8 minutes 12 seconds on cd and fades out.
There must be different versions. My CD had the sudden cut. I always loved that about the song; it felt unresolved.
James LaBrie had a phenomel voice back in the day, and I adore his timbre in the lower register. Too bad his voice is pretty much gone now.
Awake, Scenes from a Memory and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence are great albums too, I hope you'll check them out!
First 😀
This is one of my all time favourite albums from my youth years and was the introduction of DT for me.
Oh, forgot to add that the sound from JP with his Ibanez is godly on these 90's albums. I still sometimes watch the "Rock Discipline" from John Petrucci. Absolutely fantastic sound on rhythm and lead parts
Yup my first was Change Of Seasons, then this and eveything else.
I started from the very beginning, loving the first album, but when James came, it was perfect 🤘 after 50 times listening I even liked Awake a little better ... even without a "radio hit", but with many hit songs for me
Fun fact: the song "Surrounded" has sometimes been mixed live with either Marillion's "Sugar Mice" and/or Pink Floyd's "Mother" as they use the same (or similar) chord progressions
they like mixing other artists song with theirs ... on the Once in a livetime live Cd they play short parts of Enter Sandman and Money 🤘
Great reaction and great album.
Awake is brutal too.
Absolutely, but you have to listen with headphones to discover its full beauty 🤘
Great album. Still love the debut more, probably because I heard it first (when it came out) and I never was a big James LaBrie fan. Hi Ken, so you've never seen Dream Theater live ? It's just a great experience to see the guys play many of their complicated songs just like they never had to practice for it 😆
Jim please do a reaction to Psychotic Waltz debut, it's the best prog metal album released before IaW imo
I looked on Amazon for the new Band-Maid CD. £140!!! 🤯🤬
DT are a bit hit and miss for me but Images and Words and Scenes From a Memory are two of the best prog albums ever, Haken are the only other band I have heard that have made music at that level.

This is their best effort. The melodies, the musicianship, the songs. Everything after was meh for me.
Awake needs several times with headphones before you recognize its beauty ... no easy stuff, but worth to check it with many years in between ?
@rudolfbecker4313 Gut möglich, gebe der Platte nochmal eine Chance. Danke Rudolf.
Great album, but the drumsound is absolutely awful. Nice reaction video again ❤👍
Awake is much better imo 😊
