If you're new here, my name is Andrew Huang and I'm a musician who works with many genres and many instruments - and I've also made music with many things that aren't instruments like balloons, pants, water, and dentist equipment. For more info visit my website: andrewhuang.com
You can also stream and download my 40+ albums and EPs at andrewhuang.ban... or check out my other videos at / andrewhuang
Thanks for watching today and a big hug to you if you share this video with someone!
I feel like building synthesizers would be such a satisfying job to have.
can confirm, it is.
sam from look mum no computer in a nutshell
Not if you're a "final-check engineer" like I was
prototyping synths is awesome, building.... well if its your dream job...
fun? totally
satisfying? you've never done any electrical engineering, have you?
Andrew just casually makes bangers honestly. He just has to look in the general direction of something that makes sound and he instantly makes amazing music
💖
@@andrewhuang Oh?
Time. Time is all it takes.
So true ,it's like opening a present and you really don't know what's inside (in a good way of course🤪😉👍)
@@andrewhuang you need to check out the hydrasynth by ASM!
Ah that workshop, what a time trip! Patch Point has since changed location twice, Peter Blasser moved to Berlin, Wouter left Koma - such a journey.
Peter Blasser is no longer in Oregon?? I had no idea. I kept delaying about buying one of his gizmos, I was thinking maybe the cocoquantis (sp?), but I couldn’t decide. I hope he’s still building synths… thanks for the heads-up, at any rate!
Oh, I just realized I’m replying to Hainbach!! 🤗 lol. Hey man! YOU’RE who turned me onto Blasser’s synths with your demos, you even sent me some additional links to browse through! ❤️🎵❤️ I guess you’re my one-stop-shop for all things Blasser. (If you haven’t yet seen it, you would like this documentary on Delia Derbyshire - ua-cam.com/video/nXnmSgaeGAI/v-deo.html - it made me think of your recent tape experiments, as well as my days slicing up actual 16mm film for a visual project.)

Andrew... That intro...you didn't need to go THAT hard my guy! So fire...

@@frackingfluidinjection thats exactly what i thought when i heard it lmao
Is there a full version?
"Oh I gotta call my mom" was a bigger mood than I expected
Peter Blasser! I went to college with that guy. I distinctly remember a concert he did with a synthezier that was woven into a rug and rolled out at the beginning of the show. Also, there were people inside a larger dresser, but that was like his light show or something...
That’s so cool!
i spent some time a couple years back building modules with my dad. it was so fun. my favourite part is soldering :p sadly he passed before they were ever finished. I've been spending lots of time lately trying to figure out modular so I can put all the synths I inherited to good use. I have a beautiful buchla eurorack that I would love to do justice. if you are ever in Ottawa you should come by and try to figure it out with me haha! I'm so glad that more and more people are playing with modular. it's something I grew up seeing my dad tinker with (that I never understood lol) and it's so weird seeing some of my favourite artists get into them. I'm sure my dad would love seeing how they are becoming more and more mainstream. love your modular videos Andrew! keep rocking! 💜K
Well... As mainstream goes, I've seen a picture of Lady Gaga in a studio with some rack modules and a Hatsune Miku figurine. So yeah, there are a bunch of neat artists using them now.
@@umrasangus Hatsune Miku uses modules confirmed
something about seeing andrew solder made me smile. not that i was surprised he could do it, just happy to see that im not the only weirdo producer who makes their own components
that tune at 7:13 was very Thom Yorke-esc. Love it!
reminded me of Josin's music, do you know it? she's inspired by Thom Yorke too
My first thought!!
Ikr
sounds like burial too a bit
this has to be my favourite thing ive heard andrew make
I think it’b be cool if you collaborated with “Look Mum no computer”
This.
Its a crime he wasn't on here. Btw where does LMNC get his money!
@@BobbyGeneric145 well he is a awesome musician, was at one of his concerts.
Go to "Museum of Everything Else" when that pandemic ends and it get opened!

"THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS' is the last thing i expected to be on an EQ, but it is now my favorite thing.
Well now I want a full collection of one for killing all 4 extremes, and centrists :D
Someone’s going to be so confused...
@@JGHFunRun true equality.
that ciat lombard track was rad, very depeche mode, your singing is improving, and that is inspiring
So glad to see you cover some DIY stuff! Love seeing you push the boundaries of your channel! Please keep doing things that are a bit different than your normal like this! It's always so exciting!
Youre voice is so beautiful in that song. Its so pure against all the spacey ominus textures. Love it.
This video feels like it was made just for me.
Why?
It was Friend

Wait does this mean all your other synths Weren't weird?? *scratches head in acoustic musician *
Let me get this straight: You comment something that is unrelated to the fact that I have two DANGEROUSLY DASHING girlfriends? Considering that I am the unprettiest UA-camr ever, having two hot girlfriends is really incredible. Yet you did not mention that at all. I am quite disappointed, dear dave

That track with the tocante is so haunting, literal chills.
that beat with rucci's synth goes sooo hard!
Andrew’s prolific workflow is the most endearing thing to discover in 2021. Make music and fun everywhere is such a dope ethos.
Hiya, that's me rubbing the Zennert on my stubble at 8.15 - this is the correct way to play the Zennert
More of this, please! Always love hearing from the actual people behind a lot of the modules you use. Hella interesting :)
Seeing all those pre pandemic interactions makes me really miss just hanging out with people!
holey crap did not expect to see you here lol
people? what are those??
Damn, Andrew doesn't miss...
I've always wanted to mix computer science with music somehow, but I had no idea what it looked like.
and then this video comes along
You are a true futurist, Andrew. I've never seen/heard anyone combine such organic warmth with modern electronic music. Plus, your rap flow is real nice.
Really inspiring to see all these ideas from all these creative people and hear about their vision. Oh and I can relate to the "call my mom" reminder in the end haha
First of all, that opening. Damn Huang, go off!
Second, this was a perfect video. Lots of nice shots, arranged beautifully, and tons of wonderful music to glue it all together.
_This_ is why I'm subscribed and eagerly await the next notification.
Gotta love Bassimilus. Amazing 808-style kick, and then the arpeggio.
your flow in that song at the beginning was so unique, it was great
I can not wait for that monolith album to drop dude! Those lyrics are easily my favorite lyrics youve EVER heard. I cant stop relistening.
That magic moment at 7:01 where Andrew says '..we zoned out with soldering irons...' and pronounces "soldering" exACTly as it should be pronounced! BIG KUDOS to Andrew. America take notice! It is NOT SODDERING!! 😎 (EDIT: LOL!! and then at 13:01 mention is made of the very fact - hehe. Sodder my ass. If Americans can mis-pronounce something, they will. Solder is like Soldier without the 'j' sound. 👍)
Ah, this answered my question I've always had on whether you build any of your modules. Nice. I enjoy building kits almost as much as I love playing with the modules.
the song with the tocante is *chef's kiss*
I came for nerdy stuff, stayed for the talent of Andrew.
andrew travel vlog is always my fav kinda video of andrew. wishing we’ll travel more in the futuree
I honestly wouldn't mind seeing you build one of these things and talk about it as you go, that would be cool
It was really cool to see the faces behind some of my favorite synths! It’s be great to see full length videos on all of them!
This video made me smile from start to end. Thanks for making an excuse to share all of this with us, Andrew!
Really cool seeing the people behind the modules. Good stuff.
Stuff that inspires people to make cool stuff. This is one of my favorite videos of yours.
Andrew, thank you for the link of your second channel 'Suture Sound'. I've just discovered it and wow, it's litteraly a gold mine. Full of gems of pure sound design, experimentation of unique sounds/timber/rythm/textures etc...
You say to Michael Rucci that beyond the notes and the '4 min song' format for an audience, you like to just mess around on stuff. Thank you to share this on your second channel. Great hearing travel out of time !
This is such a blast from the past,, seeing the style of past Andrew's music subtly change across the trips.
Thanks Andrew, your videos are so inspiring! Great to see a travel vlog too, had forgotten about those!
All diy synth guys I met and saw on youtube have such a nice personality. :)
I feel like we are watching Andrew make history in music technology and synthesis. I think he is going to discover something amazing (if he already hasn't).
LOVE THE TRACK IN THE BEGINING
I loooooooove the way that intro song blends genres. It's like Industrial hip hop or something.
I bought a synth from Rucci when I was super young and had no idea what synths were. It definitely put down the foundation for what I'd do 8 years later - purchase an arp 2600 clone! Thanks for this, Andrew
Content is as always good, but your video production skills are just in a different league than any other synth vlogger. Props.
Damn Andrew really embraced quality over quantity here. Packed 4 trips into 1 video, what a guy! I'm really looking forward to this format of travelling+making music being a regular show
damn I wasn't feelin the first jam but that second jam gave me chills. hope you release that!
Yes! More heavy Andrew!
Figuring out that I could just make nice sounds and didn't have to construct a song when I was playing was what turned music from a chore to a joy. It was so nice to hear a pro say that. Thank you.
That arp starting at 0:37 is PURE FIRE
i really wish someone would be this nerdy on the things that i like.. man,... the people that share your passion that watch you , have it so good.. lucky. im just here trying to learn basic music stuff. cuz i enjoy good music.
Damn, that may be my favorite track you've ever made, thoroughly enjoyed
Imagine even spending 5 minutes in this studio with this genius, the amount you'd learn about music would be incredible!🔥🔥💯
Your pen game has massively improved. Kudos.
Wait.
Hold up.
You can just print your own circuit boards at home??
Mind thoroughly blown.
There's a method with a simple inkjet printer and some chemicals. You can also buy a small milling machine for a hundred bucks, or order PCBs for cheap from a fab (you send them your files and they mail you your boards). Stuff's crazy these days.
i remember we did circuit boards in school with just a marker pen and then etching... i should check out how we did that and make some board art :D
damn slapping HARD in the intro
sort of thing i'd love to get into when i have the time - this and diy computer stuff. would also be fun to combine the two, maybe create some modules and design a basic computer providing recording, mixing and i/o functionality for them
approximately 10 seconds ago I was scratching my head thinking "how can i make distorted/noisy sounds with a synth" and naturally the second i give up and open youtube and andrew uploaded a synth video. love this timing
could also get a cheapo guitar pedal to add dirt ;)
your vocals fit the intro track really well
1. What does the TSA think of all these devices you are bringing on the plane?
2. Software geek/hardware luddite here. It's just amazing to me that the makers can just figure out how to put all this stuff together to make interesting sounds, both the folks who make the devices and you who can take those devices and figure out where to put all the knobs and patch cords and not electrocute yourself or blast your ears out. But I'd try it in a DAW.
My wife is creating me a rack full of DIY modules. It's so cool. We geek out watching electronics videos and discussing what should go into a module. "Would you rather have CV for the Bitcrusher or the suboscillator level?"
Wow, super surprised by the intro! sounds heavy!
9:17 - "Our time was short, but I truly loved you" - 😍😍😍
That beginning tune was sooo good
My rack is 100% self-built, feels good man. Plus I almost got it for zero total money since I sell half of the modules I built (I built in 4-5pcs at a time).
how much do you make off of each module / where do you sell them?
Dude. The opening to this video is freakin siiiiiick!!!!!
We love to see a legend like Andrew share our love for building your own DIY synths!
I have a huge soft spot for “weird” synth and noisemakers. I really love the unpredictable ness.I wish I could afford them all.
That was sooo cool! Must dust off the soldering iron and make some more modules again.
god damn it, rucci and koma, and the plumbutter dude
holy shit, i love those three groups soooo much
i think i use a rucci part in every patch/hardware thing i ever do (i have a matrix mixer of his, and just love the shit out of him)
I've had a synth idea for a while and this is a kick in the butt to go make it
This video alone is so inspiring! Thank you Andrew
Dude, who said Andrew can't sing! #3 gave me legit goosebumps. We need that track. I want to listen to it in my car.
ANDREW with those non autotuned vocals at 8:12 killing it
Your videos are so mesmerising.
Wow, Andrew! What an impressive video for electronic engineers.
This whole video inspires me so much im gonna go make some noise right now. Thank you andrew :)
I hope you make it across the pond sometime soon and hang out with Simon the Magpie and LMNC. Making wierd shit with those mad scientists has to be a good time.
these videos are so fucking good puts tears in my eyes
when andrew uploads the day gets better
Your tocante track is one of my favourite things right now. So beautiful
EP coming in April!
@@andrewhuang Hell yeah!
Dude! Loved that opening track... more please!
Andrew Huang!! That intro song and everything about this video and what you do is freaking incredible! WOW!!
All that song at the start needs is a spiky/punky guitar and it's right in the Regurgitator ball park. Nice
The track made with Tocante had a kind of Emika vibe.. Knowing that she worked for NI I’d assume she has the comparable level of synth freakness.. but how da hell one could get to at least 1% of that? Absolutely genius!
Your falsetto is really nice! Should do more of that. 🤙🏻
I’d love to see you go to Riga and visit Érica Synths ❤️ also loved the panel on She Know Tech!
That intro has no business going so hard
Your voice in a cartoon would be so dope.
Mozart, Vivaldi, Elvis Presley, Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Trent Reznor, J Dilla, Andrew Huang.
😭😭😭
High key loving the Trent Reznor & J Dilla shout outs. Both musical geniuses of the same calibre as the others.
how did 14 minutes go by in 2?? This was sick. I hope you end up doing a whole series on the world's weirdest synths or something like that... :)
I would love to see a video collab between Andrew and Modeselektor/Moderat(honestly Andrew and everyone... he needs to be everywhere for me!)
if you Noise Engineering guys reading this Im loving you Reason Rack Extensions me and reason community we need moreeeeeeee ! we need shit tons of different modules to from you guys in our Reason Rack and as always thanks to andrew who keep pushing me to learn and grow ur Super Inspiring Andrew much love From Iran !
man that beginning song hit me so hard I felt it in my basilis itarus 0_0
I just love that I happen to also be into this stuff made by extremely small companies. These are just regular folks. I pictured noise engineering as hundreds of stereotypical minimalist Germans in a laboratory locked away from the public. Nope, just folks.
Basimilus makes such a good ringtone on my phone 😄
