I think you got it right when you boiled it down to "slick" or "flashiness". There's a heavy emphasis on making your opponent look bad through head movement and footwork and then hitting them hard.

American boxing is like another time honored American national treasure….jazz….the better it is, the less it’s appreciated. Reflects technical brilliance with highest level of intuition, master level improv. And don’t get it confused ….an American style is equipped to walk an opponent down once it’s time to turn up that pressure.

American countries with a strong African population i.e. Cuba, US, Puerto Rico, Panama you’ll notice an emphasis on defense countering and ring generalship. there’s a natural rhythm we all adhere to. Yet you can still find differences from each country.

Fantastic video! The biggest difference I’ve noticed between our style of boxing in the U.S. vs other nations always seems to be footwork. Soviet and Cuban boxers stay light on their feet, with an extreme focus on balance. They’re very rhythmic. Mexican boxers tend to stay planted, almost flat footed, while they continue to press forward, never backwards. Almost no rhythm other than their punches.
American style seems to be a mixture of both. Mixing their rhythm up, going from inside planted, to outside on their toes, and back to mid range flat footed again.

Years ago I was trained by a black amateur in a Mexican style gym in the US. Our setting was Mexican, but my black trainer would emphasize defensive rhythm. Pivoting with the feet and moving your head. Mexican coach taught it but to a much lesser extent

    • @notadaytrader
      @notadaytrader Місяць тому +1

@@LeadLeftLeon yes, mid range pivoting is very much so American style boxing.
However, both Mexican and American boxers tend to slip punches on the inside, by ducking, rather than move back outside, like Soviet and Cuban boxers.

I never noticed since I think of USA as having a very diverse style due to the vastly different regions and individuality here.
    Thanks for pointing these out!
Particularly the most famous fighters seem to go for more clowning/humiliation tactics compared to other regions.
You can see several distinct styles though
    Ali, an extremely confident outboxer
Frazier, an aggressive bob-and-weaver with a dynamite left
Tyson, a uniquely aggressive powerpuncher with defensive responsibility
    Floyd, the master of defense
Even the cross-guard has famed American fighters
SRL is probably the probably the prime example of an American boxer, as he shows all of the mentioned traits in abundance.
It's great to watch the masters at work, I just wish some of them would tone down the cocky stuff and fight!

I would say that main focus of American Boxing is style itself.
Good American boxers tend to stand out more than most. Whereas Russians or Mexicans would stick to the styles they've known and learned. Americans will often adapt through footwork and be far more aggressive with footwork, practically standing on or over your foot. Your analysis is very much spot on. Especially with movement. I'm an American. And a former boxer. As an American, my goal is to change my opponents mind.

Nailed it. I love comparing the styles along different dimensions, for example, Morale Breaking; every style lends itself to breaking it's opponents morale in a completely different way:
    - American style boxing is meant to break your opponent's morale through power, precision, timing, and taunts. This makes your opponent feel outclassed, doubt themselves and quit.
    - Euro/Soviet style boxing is meant to break your opponent's moral through non-stop consistency. This makes your opponent feel like they're fighting a machine and they quit.
    - Mexican style boxing is meant to break your opponent's moral through sheer damage, insane courage and pressure. This makes your opponent feel like prey, like they're being stalked, and they quit.
Each style is probably mentally harder for different fighters to cope with, depending on their own personality and mindset.

Being flashy at its best is to force the opponent to fight at a different rhythm than what they're usually trained for - the moment the opponent loses focus, their movement and breathing disrupted from the antics being pulled.
At its worst, the flashy person becomes a clown against someone who's hyper focused with their fundamentals.
Either way, being an entertaining pro is still a victory in itself

    I have a few questions:
1.) After watching your (very interesting) video clip, it seems to me that Joe Frazier and George Foreman didn't use the American style, did they?
2.) What do you think is the reason that there is no American heavyweight champ at the moment?
3.) Roy Jones Jr. appears in your video and he was of course flashy, but he uses a style that can't be replicated. In fact, many coaches would even advise against trying to copy Jones Jr. style. He was just so fast and so athletic that the normal rules of boxing didn't apply to him for a long time. Or what do you think about that?

      2. Talent pool depletion. Big young athletes have more exposure to football and MMA. Plus there are more highschool football teams and MMA gyms than pure boxing gyms.

Its interesting that even the style of boxing is a political complextion of a countries identity. The flash and brash style is exactly what characterizes America as a whole and soviet system is heavily focused on the science. While else mexicans embrace the hard preassure style as expressed in their culture

Russians are naturally taller and make great outboxers
Mexicans are shorter and wouldn't be as effective at range
Americans fall in the middle and their style reflects it!

@skillrboxing I would argue the hallmark of American boxing is power. in the way it’s used kinda makes it fall under flashiness- lots of headhunting, and emphasis on the the biggest lands. This doesn’t really fit the Philly style though so I’d get why you wouldn’t include it fully. The names are insane. Not all around talent but pure power: Tyson, wilder, foreman, hearns, j Jackson, McClellan, Marciano, tank, shavers, Louis, Dempsey…it’s goes on and on…. having a friendly rivalry w Mexico ( toughest and very powerful punchers) might create some some growth in power and chin for both nations boxers

Well, this conversation should be a little bit more specific, because the majority of the examples that you can use are black American boxers. Muhammad Ali, Pernell Whitaker, boots, James Toney, Andre Ward, Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather, Tevin Farmer, are all slick black boxers. Now it’s certain boxers that are more slick than others. You also have black boxers that aren’t necessarily slick. That’s what I think of when you speak of the American boxer. Shane Mosley isnt really slick. Neither was Devon Alexander, or Errol Spence. Those two more so are stiff. It has a lot to do with our rhythm. The stylishness of it boils down to our physical charisma.

Boxing didn't originate in England. It started in Ethiopia and Egypt then it became a olympic sport in greece. It died out after the fall of rome then resurfaced in England as prize fighting. England created the iteration we use today but the sport of boxing was created way before that...

@skillrboxing i agree, but saying it originated in England and not bringing light to where the style of fighting actually came from can be misleading. Aside from that great video.
