    Think of all the companions the Doctor has lost over the years, in various ways -- especially after what happened with Rose, he was trying to shut down any sort of emotional attachment out of fear of going through that again, and out of fear that Martha would meet a similar fate. In a way, the Doctor and Jack are very much alike -- both unable to die (Jack resurrects, the Doctor regenerates), both doomed to see those they care about leave them, either departure or death.

    The Doctor really cared for Martha, but he didn't want to feel affectionate to her because he didn't want to lose her like he lost Rose. The Doctor promised Martha one trip, but couldn't resist to drop her off again, so she became a full time companion and a come-back companion.

    I understand. It did seem cool, but I thought Jack's gesture was protective as well loving, like he was making certain the Doctor didn't do anything again to lead Martha on or hurt her. And it seemed from the moment she materialized on the Crucible, he was right at her side; it was like he didn't want to risk losing her. I think the Doctor understood Martha and Jack had moved on beyond him in many ways.

    @Meangrl19 I was totally surprised when RTD married Martha to Mickey. I don't have anything against Mickey I suppose but as for as the episodes were concerned she barely knew him, even if Tom was a rebound from the Doctor, I didn't like the way that was done. It would have been great if Riley turned up and came for Martha, now that would have been romantic and as girlie as it seems, I felt that is what Martha deserved to be swept off her feet and cherished, not just suddenly married to Mickey.

    @Lucille7777 Martha is like a human version of Romana though. The Doctor lost Romana too even though she was a timelord. I think the Doctor's biggest problem is with losing people. In season three I don't think he was only upset about losing Rose. I think that he was upset about losing all his companions and Rose was just the latest blow to him. He was really hurt losing her because she soothed the wound of the TIme War.

  • @Meangrl19
    @Meangrl19 14 років тому +9

    @Lucille7777 I think the Doctor did like martha more than a friend (whether he loved her or just liked her is questionable) , but I think that is why he pushed her away so much. Even David and the writers talk about how the Doctor is impressed and amazed by her and that she was the one he picked out of everyone else. They talked about how the doctor cared about martha(though I didn't see it).

    Actually the question put to Moffat was which of the new companions did he like; he was asked as a viewer not a writer. He said great things about Rose, (Of course in the same interview he calls her "needy") and was glowing about Donna, but he didn't mention Martha at all. But the whole Martha supporting the Doctor does fit in with the character willingness to look after him.

    • @kingofsavage2442

    @Meangrl19 I agree Russell T. Davis lost his way writing the scripts. RTD created a perfect companion in Martha Jones for the Doctor, they were perfectly matched emotionally and intellectually then RTD destroyed their relationship and by doing so he made the Doctor seem self-destructive and somewhat unstable. The Doctor destroys his life with Martha for what? Did Donna add something to the Doctor's life he didn't have in Martha? No, it seemed the Doctor lost more than he gained.

    I realised why Rusty did what he did. He is a Martha/everyone else but the Doctor shipper. Did you notice? Owen/Martha Jack/Martha Tom/Martha Mickey/Martha Riley/Martha and who knows how many more. I can side with Rusty on that one. I ship Martha with everyone but the Doctor too. Everyone else treated her well and for the ones who didn't she stood up to them. The Doctor treated her bad and she let him so I think their relationship would be destructive .

I am glad she got away before he destoyed her like he does to everyone else. Not like he didn't already damage her but she learned from it and got out before it went too far.

    @Lucille7777 I think Freema's contract was up at the end of series three and that's why he had to write her out like that If she would have stayed traveling with the Doctor I'm sure they would have gotten together. Why would you want that though. The Doctor was the geek and Martha was the beautiful smart girl. Their relationship didn't make sense. Martha could do much better than the Doctor. He treated her like dirt and she's perfect. I think she needs someone better.

  • @Meangrl19
    @Meangrl19 14 років тому +3

    @Lucille7777 It just seemed like he might have one day been able to care about her the same way he cared about Rose. in fact sometimes I think if she stayed they would be/cold have been a couple, but Martha got out. It's best that she did. Even if the Doctor and her were together it would end in tradgedy in this case it's better to not have loved at all. The Doctor was too cruel to her. She needs someone who will treat her right.

  • @Lucille7777
    @Lucille7777 14 років тому +2

    @Meangrl19 I didn't necessarily want Martha and Rose to fight but RTD lost the plot completely as that would have been an awesome moment, as we women just know, we don't have to be told who the other woman is. No fighting but a common realization of who they are to the Doctor. However RTD became obsessed with backtracking pretending like D&M never had anything going on. In the Confidentials for Tennant's specials it seemed everyone was on board as if Martha barely existed, I resent that.

    @Lucille7777 RTD did the same to David in Casanova. RTD was the writer for it and casanova was in love with a woman who loved him, but stayed wih the other guys anyway because of his money. I've never really seen much of the confidentials. I guess I need to try to make sense of that. I don't understand why he would think it was funny for treating Martha like that. She is one of the greatest characters he ever created. It's kind of odd for him to put her down like that.

  • @Lucille7777

    @totallyDT I always dislike the Doctor for always disabling Jacks teleport. Jack is far more responsible than the Doctor as the Doctor does his damage and leaves other people to clean up the mess while Jack stays around and helps in the aftermath. I hope in any future Torchwood episodes that Jack and/or Martha are able to enable Jack’s teleport again (Martha gave Jack the correct numbers to operate the device again in Stolen Earth).

  • @Bobsyermomsuncle
    @Bobsyermomsuncle 15 років тому +1

    Knowing what happen to Jack on Torchwood- his brother buried him for almost 1000 years or more in ancient Cardiff- I get really miffed at the Doctor for disabling his teleport. Jack and Martha stay on Earth and clean up the mess left after his visits -- he owes them more respect -- but that's just one of those too serious grown up observations that kinda take the fun out of the show -- so , Never mind....

  • @Meangrl19
    @Meangrl19 14 років тому +1

    @Lucille7777 I like her with Mickey, but I think they were showing Mickey and Martha in the future they were together, not in the present. Tom wasn't a rebound from the Doctor. She didn't go out with the Doctor and Freema and Rusty botth made it clear that Tom Milligan was in no way a rebound. I would have liked it if Riley came back too. Unfortunatley he'd need a time machine or the doctor would have to give him a ride because Riley lives in the future.

  • @Lucille7777
    @Lucille7777 14 років тому +1

    @Meangrl19 Well I'd certainly sign the petition for Martha to have her own show traveling in space. I don't want her to be married to anyone rather I’d like to see Martha courted and playing the field a bit. Noel Clarke has so many projects of his own, he produces and directs his own movies now and supposedly said he would not do DW again so they could either recast his role or you know, kill him off. Why can't the Rose people leave Martha be? Jealousy is a terrible thing.

  • @Lucille7777
    @Lucille7777 14 років тому +2

    @Meangrl19 Well if that was Mickey and Martha in the future than time can be changed and perhaps Martha doesn't marry Mickey at all. I watched a Sontaran Stratagem Confidential and Tennant referrs to Martha as being the Doctor's ex and that anyone would be nervous at meeting their ex and in the Lazarus commentary Tennant refers to Martha and the Doctor's "relationship." RTD back-tracked and didn't want them to be seen that way and Freema goes with what they want but I agree with Tennant.

  • @Meangrl19

    Actually I am glad Martha didn't end up with the Doctor. Noone can stay with the Doctor forever. Martha didn't need him, but he needed her. Even if they did get together she would have been the one leaving him. Their relationship didn't make any sense anyway. No offense to the Doctor by why would the beautiful, intelligent, perfect girl fall for the geek? He should have been greatful a girl like Martha even looked in his direction.

  • @Lucille7777
    @Lucille7777 14 років тому +3

    @Meangrl19 RTD said it more than once but I'm sure he said that during a commentary with David on Smith and Jones. RTD thought the Doctor's rudeness towards Martha was funny, I don't think David had a particular response, but in other Confidentials David appears uncomfortable with Martha's treatment and on one he said he was concerned that the Doctor didn't have to answer for it. That's why I feel sorry for David because the 10th Doctor was written to be such a douche bag towards Martha.

Whether she was being the substitute Doctor traveling in space or whther she was working at UNIT with the Brig like the 3rd Doctor did. @Meangrl19 Oh I definitely think they were making the point that Chantho wasted 17 years of her life with a man who wouldn't or couldn't love her and for Martha to take note. What offended me was that Chantho was a very alien bug she was not human in the least so it was somewhat understandable that the Professor could not relate to her that way, but Martha is not an alien bug but is very human, but she was treated like she was a completely different species from say, Rose. That was offensive.

    @Lucille7777 Great storyline. It really messes with your head. The Doctor tried pushing Martha away by season three because he didn't want to lose another girl he cared about. I noticed he always tried not to get too close. In the end it backfired on him. His plan worked and he pushed her away, but at the same time he did care about her despite his hard effort to not care about her.

  • @Meangrl19

    @Lucille7777 About the similarities between Chantho and Martha: If you think about it, Chantho's timelord killed her, is this foreshadowing the relationship between the Doctor and Martha. I don't know maybe I'm being over dramatic, but sadly I'd believe it.

    @Meangrl19 One thing I'm grateful to RTD for is that he created Martha, she is an awesome character played by Freema beautifully. However, I'm disappointed in him that he backtraced from D&M's relationship in favor of the legendary Rose and obviously he caved to the Rose fans but if he'd kept on track with D&M it would have been a much better series particularly in series 4. RTD's best ideas he seemed to walk away from like the connection between the Master and Martha in the original scripts.

    I like Jack and Martha. The producers seem to as well. With The Doctor I hearing Pink's "Stupid Girl.." Had Martha been a male the DW scripts would have been sharper, and her character more competetive with the Doctor with some sexual tension like Romana was at first and in Smith and Jones. Instead her profession is reduced to inaccurate CPR.
    And what is there for a Doctor to do on the Tardis? At least on Torchwood Martha can be believably professional as well as sexy.

    @Lucille7777 The biggest problem is that some people don't like Martha and most that do don't like the Master. I think the Master has changed in teh End of Time though and he will wrk onto being a better person with the help of Martha. Of couse they'll fight sometimes, but Martha would only do him good. She'd really help and preserve him becoming a better person. Everyone wanted a season where the Master and the Doctor traveled together so this can be it's substitute.

  • @Meangrl19
    @Meangrl19 14 років тому +2

    @Lucille7777 I was dissapointed in teh End of Time when they didnt get to have their final face off. I heard both of them were going to be in it and assumed they were going to fight again and they never did so I was very dissapointed. John Simm said he wouldn't act as master to any other doctor. So maybe he'll act as Master still on a Doctor Who spin off just not with any other Doctor besides Tennant like he said. Freema and John both said they wish tehy had done more work together too.

    @Lucille7777 I'd really love to see them have it out or maybe they can even travel together in some of the shows. You said you wanted to see her in space. Maybe the Master and her can travel in his tardis together. She can make him a better person like she did with the Doctor. As for the Rose people I don't why they can't leave Martha alone. I love and adore Rose, but let's face it Martha was the doctor. We could have got rid of the Doctor and she still could have saved everyone by herself

    The show lost so much momentum without Freema. I'm glad Freema got another job with Law & Order UK but I wish DW had not written Freema out in the first place. They didn't know they had a good thing until it was too late.

I only have this theory because I noticced they make David's hair spiky to show how eccentric he is. Then when we see Marhta again in series four when she's 'grown up' her hair isn't as silly looking. It is straight and taken care of like an adults.

    @Meangrl19 Well I blame RTD for everything it’s his scripts. I remember RTD saying he thought what he was putting Martha through was funny. It was not funny, it was sadistic and the real problem with RTD is that he is in love with David Tennant and his character, the Doctor, himself. I think it explains a lot about how the female companions were treated. Donna was respected because she was never a romantic threat in RTD's imagination.

    I have the nagging suspicion that you are right. Freema is incredibly beautiful and personable. It is unbelievable and unrealistic that Dr. Who would ignore her completely and not have any interest in her even if they did not end up as a couple. Watching the clips from the show one can clearly see that David found Freema to be attractive by the way he looked at her. Therefore, I think the show's producers/writers went overboard trying to downplay Martha's/Freema's appeal.

    @Lucille7777 Same here. Everyone else wants to see Martha and Mickey married defeating aliens together which I'd love to see, but not right now. I'd rather see Martha playing the field too. I am trying to start a petition with someone right now, but first we need to find a place to make one and then write it out so people take us seriously. I really have my heart set on Freema and John Simm working together as well.

    Yeah, well...Jack certainly liked Martha very much...but his heart was already gone to another Jones. ;-)
    But Martha, Mickey, Ianto and Jack would have made a brilliant TW 3 - okay, have Gwen, too, if you need to, but I didn't. They would have been great for TW 4 as well...*sigh*

    @Lucille7777 I also had the theory that maybe they made Martha's hair like that to show how childlike she was. I'm not saying she's childish. I mean that Martha didn't really get to experince life. It seemed like her mother kept her from having a social life like Tish said in the Lazuras Experiment. This is just a stupid theory, but I think they might have made her hair that way to show outwardly how childlike and innocent Martha still was.

    Actually, I think Tennant was happy to have an excuse to take a long look at Freema's ass. In the Sontaran Stratagem episode, in particular, Tenant is always stretching his neck into the clouds around Freema, attempting to avoid looking at her backside but inevitably he looks way down (or backs up and looks down), then comes up Freema's backside like no one catches that. It's pretty funny. The Torchwood cast loved Freema and in interviews spoke of great admiration for her butt.

    Good question. The Doctor says this is "The Price they have to pay?" What about Donna?! That's a huge price. Other than the Dimensional Canon, which is chaos theory nightmare, what did Rose do? He's punishing the Human Ten by exiling him from the Tardis and all he knows, (like River!) and Rose is some kind of Nanny/consolation prize? A little sexual healing is supposed to make him less angry? I was happy to hear that Russell was good with that ending either.

    He wasn't checking out Sally - she was telling him about his future! It was probably a bit important. :p
    Idk, writing short generic comedy in a Martha-lite episode doesn't strike me as getting to grips with the character. Moffat doesn't talk about her because he's never really had to consider her, not like Cornell or the other writers.

    @Meangrl19 Those are exactly my thoughts as well, although she still was pretty, Freema is actually gorgeous and her looks were definitely dumb down on purpose in series 3 and that was unfair because she was constantly compared to another woman yet they purposely interfered with her looking her best I suppose to further justify the unrequited love stuff. In series 4 Freema look more like her true self.

    @Lucille7777 They surprised me in LOTTL because when Martha started laughing I thought the Master was going to start laughing with her like so cliche betrayal. I relly thought Martha was on the Master's side when she laughed like that and she was laughing cause she tricked the Doctor, but it was the other way around. I really want to know what their connection is. So yes please get back to me about it. Maybe they can include this relationship in the spinoff with martha.

  • @Meangrl19
    @Meangrl19 14 років тому +1

    @Lucille7777 I think Martha could work in UNIT still because they did with alien situtations and she can travel in space with the Master. So that way there are Earth epsiodes and space episodes. I'll put my thought together while I'm gone and send you my ideas for it. I really want to make a petition for a show with martha and the Master traveling/working together. I'm really hoping that people will sign the petition. I have to make a persuasive arguement first though.

  • @Meangrl19
    @Meangrl19 14 років тому +1

    @Lucille7777 Martha was like the Doctor and if she and the Master traveled together that could only be a good show. My problem is by three oclock today i will be away till sunday night. I will work on my persuasive petition then. I have alot of ideas abou the show, but there are people who won't go for it like rose fans, people who hate the Master, and people who hate Martha.

    @Lucille7777 Oh I loved when she came back in Season 4! Personally though I wish she wouldn't come back to Doctor Who. I love her character, so I'm hoping she get's a spin off. Personally I don't want that d*ckhead the Doctor around her. He puts her down all the time and she doesn't deserve to be treated like that. If it were up to me she'd be the Doctor traveling in the TARDIS with companions, not the real Doctor. Unfortunley it's been his show since the show began.

    Its because Starz took over for Series 4 and wanted to make it more American by adding more American cast members, also Freema was busy filming Law and Order UK again.

    That was actually suppose to be the cast of Children of Earth, Jack, Gwen, Martha, Ianto and Mickey. However, because of Law and Order UK, Freema was unavailable and because of Adulthood, so was Noel. Which is why RTD created Lois Habiba, a character which was based on Martha. I wish they could have gone through with that group. Those 5 would have been an awesome team for Torchwood 3.

    If they couldn't do it for Children of Earth and just took those characters out of COE then why couldn't they use those characters for Series 4? Is it because now that we're in the Matt Smith era the writers didn't think that people would expect those characters to exist anymore? if so that's silly. Hope Jack and 11th Doctor meet at some point, love it when new incarnations of the Doctor meet people that he met when he was someone else :)

    Two Doctors to deal with, both with the same memories, the same feelings for the same people and similar abilities. This is the alpha male stuggle to end all alpha male struggles. And Billie wasn't coming back and we knew about River so they couldn't have her waltz off into the sunset with the Doctor. And it's written for the 10-13 audience, some who do not think as darkly abut the situation as we old folks. (lol) They got Rose and the Doctor so they are happy.

  • @Meangrl19

    @Lucille7777 Even alittle in series four her looks were dumb down in the last two episodes(because Rose was coming back.) The Doctor and the fans for that matter shouldn't have been comparing Rose and Martha anyway. I think the biggest mistake the Doctor ever made was letting a girl like Martha get away. I'm glad they didn't end up together she needs to be treated well by someone who actually cares about her.

  • @Lucille7777
    @Lucille7777 14 років тому +1

    @Meangrl19 Yes I've been told more than once that in the original scripts there was some sort of connection between the Master and Martha and I speculated that perhaps that's one of the reasons the Doctor was attracted to her, she may have had the "air" of the Master about her so to speak. I just e-mailed someone who will hopefully give me more information and I’m about to e-mail someone one else as well, so I'll get back to you on this. I want to see a copy of the original scripts myself.
