  • Creating a walking robot is no easy task. But despite numerous efforts throughout the years, people are still trying to create robots that can truly walk around our environments like we do. Motherboard met with Agility Robotics, a small startup in Oregon that is one of many trying to crack the code of creating the perfect bipedal robot.

    why no one is talking about the power source of those recent super thin robots? What happened with huge batteries? Did they manage to somehow pack li-ion so tight that there's no need for wires or is it some experimental graphite batteries?

    • @waynerussell6401
      @waynerussell6401 6 років тому +8

      Current Lithium Ion chemistry is not non-linear.
      Goodenough believes it has reached its chemical potential, at most a few percent unrealized.
      Tesla's (from Dahn's research) 2170 cells are reported to be 15% more capacity and twice the recharge life than competitors. This is likely to be its pinnacle and sufficient for electric transportation up to super car performance (Roadster2, Semi truck).
      Solid electrolyte batteries under development for many years will allow greater power densities and faster charging under greater temperature ranges, but atm not demonstrated able to be commercially made. Musk estimates that once power densities of greater than 400kWh/kg (twice LiIon) electric commercial aviation will be possible.

    Imagine in the future they're good enough, they could be set up in boxes on street corners for dispatch to release, to quickly get to a scene and give early help. Like, imagine one of these having a small fire extinguisher within it, or attached to it, albeit a larger version, and running to a fire and keeping certain spots contained, until firefighters arrived. Or one with non-lethal equipment for police, so no one is significantly harmed. Or heck, a paramedic version, where it could send images to an ambulance for them to get an early idea of what they need to do. Heck, they could slap on a screen with instructions on basic first aid, with an audible pre-recorded voice.
    For domestic use, these are pretty decent, if they get developed enough, and have a reasonable price. Make it a price where they could still make profit, and of course, a limited time for how long they're active. I'd personally want it to be between 7-10 years, and out of mostly materials that could be recyled to make another one of them, so it's also cost-efficient.
    It could even go to a disaster zone. Say there's an earthquake or a tornado. And these things are at least in a sort of container durable enough to survive, and are pre-equipped with a set of instructions on what to do if it happens. Say, the company or local emergency services could release them, and they could give light and rations, and a GPS for emergency services to find people. Or even help in search and rescue, where a team of firefighters and paramedics go one direction, and it goes another direction, to speed up the search for survivors.
    These are very optimistic... But I do hope these make significant progress for at least some practical way for them to be used. And cost efficient where people would at least want it. Especially if they made more versions.

    It’d be awesome to put a Robonaut’ top half on Cassie. Also, considering bipedal motion, walking is a form of falling, for humans and a daily subconscious balancing act, after learning this initial process, program mos upright robots, to prevent themselves from falling, as it stands now, the majority of such [upright] robots steps, look as if they’re walking sneakily.

    Sure these guys will tell you they're making them for humanitarian purposes, but what you really gotta ask yourself is whether your job includes any movement from A to B, because once robots are not bolted in place and can move through a production area like a human, or better, your job will be replaced the very day this technology becomes cheaper than you. Which is pretty damn fast. Maybe you're delivering mail, maybe you're driving a forklift, maybe you're a trucker or maybe you're a bricklayer, ALL those type of jobs can and will be replaced within the next two decades. Then we've got AI developing faster than computer power did, and soon any job that specifically requires a human, like a doctor or dentist or psychologist, can and will be replaced once society gives the okay. Which again is pretty damn fast.
    I've recently visited a small supermarket with no cashiers. Customers shop, scan and pay their own groceries. Once people are okay with permanent camera surveillance, this will become reality for every supermarket and other types of shops. That's millions of jobs lost with already available technology..

    • @sausage4mash
      @sausage4mash 6 років тому +7

      if no one has a Job then no one will buy the shit factories make, most likely scenario is that humans do work more suited to humans, but if not they'll have to bring in a universal income ,personally I welcome the future ,just sad I've got a bit too old to see it all .

    • @NotASpyReally
      @NotASpyReally 6 років тому +2

      The problem is not the robots, it's society. If we don't need to do boring and repetitive jobs because a machine can do it like us or even better than us, then why not? Cause we need MONEY. The money is the problem, not the technology advancement.

    • @realitycheck7865
      @realitycheck7865 6 років тому +1

      But don't you think if we advance that much then you wouldn't need a job at that point!?

    • @NotASpyReally
      @NotASpyReally 6 років тому +1

      Why would I need a job?

    • @TheBushdoctor68
      @TheBushdoctor68 6 років тому +5

      I think one of the possibilities is what we're going towards a future where people do not have to work if they don't want to, and spend their time on things like art, music or simply raising a family. Others will chose a job that they like, not for an income, but for social contacts, feeling useful, etc.
      The problem is the transition period. We will go through decades where the amount of jobs will be declining rapidly and there's not a lot of wiggle room to come up with new types of jobs. We have already shifted a large part of our labor force to service providing, 'non-productive' jobs, so there's not a lot that we can still add to that sector.
      I fear that we're facing some really bad times before things shift to a new type of society. Capitalism as we knew it, is in the last phases of its life. It's now getting ugly and mean and doesn't really care about people as long as the money keeps pouring in. Which is why, after grabbing all the resources on Earth, they're now turning to other means to increase their profit. Like getting rid of that nasty expensive human labor force....

    I don't understand why the feet aren't flexible in pivot like our ankles do. this would allow for rocky floors and adjustments without tilting the body.. most likely easier said than done I guess.
    Continuous stepping to correct balance and not moving wastes energy, they really need to work on balance via simulated ankles and feet with pressure sensors.

  • @redgeciccone8218
    @redgeciccone8218 Рік тому

    Making a robot walk is good, making it walk on any surface is impressive. As a human, what holds us in place, our legs yes, but it's the feet, we can control the pivo of the body with the feet. Try balancing on one leg, and you will discover that what keeps you in balance is the movement of your foot. No robot use this except the Honda robot.

    Question from an old engineer to the advanced engineers here: Why are the kinetics of bipedal robot knee's inverted relative to bipedal animals? By 'inverted' I mean that the knee joint is located behind the body's center of gravity instead of inline or ahead of it. A human's thigh initiates leg motion by swinging/lifting the knee/thigh, then swinging the calf forward. But the robot initiates swinging/lifting the calf and then swinging/dropping the knee/thigh forward.

    The robots that use cameras or IR lasers to gather data around them, do the creators isolate the cameras / IR laser sensors from the shocks of the frame so that they imitate human eyes? Sort of like focus tracking included with the camera / IR laser senors having freedom of 360 rotation and a 3D movement of roughly 2 inches to mitigate shock and shakiness. Sorry if the comment seems inarticulate.

    I see the aspect of human-like robots that can be creepy with their stunted movement and poor mimicking of human actions, but I think a lot of the discomfort that people feel on the topic comes from the production of videos like this, i.e. the eerie background music, the slow motion shots. It would be interesting to see if the response of people to human-like robotics shift if the tone of the videos shifted to a more inspirational and celebratory kind.

    You have created that machine and it's capable of walking like humans, it's clear that it ain't easy to create such a thing. NOW THE QUESTION IS WHO CREATED US AND MEAD US CAPABLE OF EVERYTHING?!

    @02:50 If Fukushima has told us one thing then it's even Robots not being able to enter a high radiation environment like the ones after a nuclear reactor meltdown because of the radiation "particles" destroying the nanoscale circuits inside the chips as they pass through them.
    Also pretty sure if you want to have a robot that works in tandem with us and the environment catering to us then going with a bird type leg design is the least favorable choice you could go for. Good luck getting this bugger properly seated in a car for a sortie. I'm also quite certain this design is having a blast descending a narrow stairway ( ED-209 sends his condolences =D )

    Reverse engineering the inner ear.
    But will it have to be completely reprogrammed if it is attached to an upper body?
    Everything electronic can be hacked. I hope they have built in several back doors in the software just in case.
    Birds can't do stairs. Because they can fly. So perhaps the top half will be a drone of some kind.
    If they can make an electronic inner ear, this information could help some people with balance problems.
    The other use for it could be in balancing large construction cranes, and tall structures. And in balancing structures during seismic events. Imagine this attached to ladders.
    My feeling is the best use for these right now is to create a more lifelike wax museum.
    Everything else is too dangerous until we have learned how to do Peace On Earth.
    My favorite use for this would be to help caregivers of the disabled and elderly with lifting and cleaning.

    Progress is being made slowly. I think the word *man* is derived from words that have to do with being capable of manipulating with hands. Start working on the robot hands.

    8:31 The camera has a ton of tearing and low framerate. That's also a lot of noise and holes in the depth image. Did they try to put a lidar or kinect style infrared projector?
