I use this Camera at home and I love the colors I get from it. Il love the grain.
Not so much dynamic range, but expose properly and waow ... magic occures.
I have mine for free, because the owner underestimate the D70.
Glad I have it and still have a lot of joy to use it
After that I bought the D40 and someone give me the D40. Phenomenal camera to document family life

My go to $35 kit is a Nikon D40 (6mp CCD) with the 18-70 Nikon zoom. Ton of fun to shoot. AF is surprisingly good. Results are very satisfying.

Eric has that lens too. It was one of the lenses I gave him. Seemed like a decent lens. Better than modern kit zooms.

@@EDHBlvd - It surprised me how good it is. Got the shebang at Goodwill. Once in a while you can score pretty well at the thrift stores, but you have to be quick about it. Good stuff goes fast.

I’ve got the old D80 which I passed on to my daughter. Always loved using it as it always produced lovely colours and results.

I bought a D70 this year for my growing Nikon collection , I have been pretty impressed with the shots from this camera. Another good thing about this camera is the range of lenses you can use with it.

very nice. I love passing gear on to the next person. Just gave my son (8) my old D3000 with the kit lens, so he can learn about photography. I upgraded to a D80 and 35mm f/1.8 a few years ago, and a D300 (used, $90) for my kids' sports and recitals. ;-) I can't get past the cost of new mirrorless gear for what is, for me, just a hobby to pass the time and give me an excuse / motivation to get some fresh air.

I recently picked up this camera for 60 bucks with the nifty 50 1.8. This camera has made me really question all my gear, and 'dream' gear. It takes fantastic images, even at 6MP they are very useable. It also has auto-ISO which is very handy for shooting indoor stuff with kids around. And the noise, even at high levels is very pleasing to my eye. If you crank the ISO to 1600, just convert the file to B&W and enjoy the grain it brings. Super camera.

Eric, Sorry for your "over and above bill$". Been there. Thanks for this video for more reasons than one! It makes me realize that what I currently own is MORE than enough!! Love simplicity. Great pics and cute kiddo's. Tks!!

I still have a D70 lying around. I used it with a 50mm 1.4 af-d. Loved it, but replaced it with a D90 when the card slot began to go wrong.

The D70 was my first DSLR. I can't remember if it was swapping the lens or flash with the camera switched on that broke it, that was in 2007. I picked one up today for £40, the battery is charging and I can't wait to play with it.

Used gear but new to me is how I scratch that itch without burning a hole in my wallet 👍 plus, getting great shots from old gear is a fantastic confidence booster. Agree with all the points you made, but even for things like sports and wildlife, used mid-range DSLRs from 5-10 years ago can still get you there.

I shot today with my old D300. Yeah, it has a CMOS sensor, but the colors are awesome. I don't miss the D200 at all. It makes me wonder why I "upgraded" to full frame. You can get a really good D300 for less than $200 USD. It's all about the lenses. Yeah... lenses.

It's 2004 tech with APS-C size sensor, 6 MP. You can't compare it even nowadays with mediocre small Sensors. The only real good phones with Type 1.0/1" Sensor are currently the Xiaomi 14 Ultra & Vivo X100 Ultra. Wait for the Vivo X200 Ultra, Oppo Find X 8 Ultra & Xiaomi 15 Ultra 2025....but anyway, a phone is a phone, is a phone. Fake A.I. algorithms, fake bokeh, DoF, etc....only the mentioned Sensor size gives some real bokeh effects...but too much MP are crammed onto this anyway, via phone. For instance, all Sony RX10/RX100 series through all the years only had 20 MP - which is way enough, for these small Type 1.0/1" Sensors.

I also got mine for free. A buddy of mine found it at pawn shop for $7. I bought a battery, charger and 35mm 1.4 DX lens for it. Love the on camera flash and indeed it does take amazing shots when exposure properly. Makes a great every day point and shoot.

The screen allows you to zoom in a lot with one press of a button and if you hold it down while turning the control wheel you can zoom in even more and look around the image to check focus. Every old camera has that feature but most people don't realize this. Checking focus is quick and easy and using focus and recompose is perfect for getting eyes in focus every time. I have even done wildlife photography with this camera and paid jobs in 2024 with it instead of my newer ones (they loved their pictures and had no idea that this camera was only 6mp and 20 years old). As for CCD color, I have many different cameras including a D70s and sometimes results are identical to CMOS. There are far too many variables and most of my pictures from my D70s don't look like film (unless I wanted them too) but as someone who also owns many film cameras I can say film cameras all get very different results and there isn't a universal film look. Digital can look like film and film can look like digital. I started with a D70s and love it to this day. Most of the time it doesn't hold me back at all. Getting good with an older camera requires more skill but once you figure it out you will be blown away by the results. I have even made large prints with it and the large sensor combined with my high quality lenses capture more detail and have better picture quality than everyone's flagship smartphones. Many movies and TV shows from 2005 still look and sound better than anything your iPhone will get due to the better equipment and skilled crew. It might come as a surprise to some that many pictures from 2005 still look excellent at poster sizes today. 2005 wasn't the 1800s and yes it was even in full color. Six megapixels from a larger and higher quality sensor with a bigger and higher quality lens will crush your smartphone every time if you know how to use it.

It's been my workhorse for years, and I love it. Got mine as a hand me down from my dad, and even though I only have the single lens (the 18mm-70mm) , it still takes amazing photos. Sure, I could just use my cell phone, just you don't really get the satisfaction and accomplishment of using a DSLR.
Oh and I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon lol.

Sometimes the old DSLR drive lens are better for photographing people and animals. I had a Nikon D60 and was using the Nikon 55-200 and my cat was not looking at the camera but when he heard that lens focus he looked right at the camera and I got this really nice photo of him.

I still have and use my old Canon 350D (Rebel XT). It is my camera of choice when going to places where my camera can be stolen. I enjoy that It does not have auto ISO, nor high dynamic range, so I have to think before shooting a picture.

Being as I have a Nikon D700 as well, I ABSOLUTLY LOVE IT!

My first camera was a D70. I bought some extra lenses and then I started photographing for a company that really wanted me to use Canon.
After a while the d70 broke and I continued to do everything on Canon.
Now that I have stopped working for the company I have ordered a second hand d70. It feels like going back to my old love.
And it will likely allow me to sell everything Canon :-)

It's a nice camera, the colors are nice, you have to protect the highlights and best to shoot RAW+JPG, if you miss you exposure ,, the screen does not tell you alot, so check your histogram, or develop a feel for the cam ... This color calibration resembles canon alot, but with different blues, and is much better than what Nikon does today, especially the greens are alot better, it's not as good as a Canon 5D, it's different from the Olympus E300/E500 series, different in image and different in shooting,, it's not as good as the Olympus E1 but you have alot more lenses to play with than the Four/Thirds system ... it's not a Leica M anything :-) -- with a nice lens, good skills and good workflow, it's a great tool. Like all CCD's it loves good light, it's very unforgiving with highlights. They will clip. Metering (I'm not sure actually) ,, it seems less accurate than I would like .. I find myself using compensation , more than I should .. Is it worth it, yes the output file is special. Not just vibrant or saturated,, its has a different look and feel, that is part of this camera. (Why I like the other cameras mentioned too).

Thing is simple - if one can't make a decent picture with a D70, one can't create anything useful with any camera. I bought the D70s, D40, D80, D90 & D7000, even D700 back into their heyday.
For street, the D70s is still fine. Into the same way, like any other D100, D50, D70, D40. Nowadays, these are cheap as chips.

6 shot buffer. Either you shoot it like film or it’s not going to work. It’s not one of Nikon’s better cameras. Switched to the D200 as soon as I could and shot that for 10 years. That had horrible battery life but otherwise it was incredible. The D200 is about the same price.
