Cool beans dude. My first dslr after finally realising the end of film was near.. It is also my favorite after collecting over 50 differnt cameras since. Very satisfying to shoot.
Excellent review. I purchased an original D200 back in the day for the MSRP price. Later I traded it for a D7000. I missed it so much I was lucky to find one from Japan last year almost unused with only 920 shutter count for a whopping $150. I just love it!
Found mine on eBay for £50 GBP - on a buy-it-now. Grabbed it quick, still works perfectly! Great results with a manual focus E series 50mm f:1.8 lens. Great review video btw.
Thanks! Haha, you should, if your curious about older CCD and perfect ergonomics it doesn't get much better especially factoring in cost! If you do get one let me know how your experience is with it.
@ my only reservation is that on sunny days, I won’t be able to tell any difference against my d700, and in lower light, I would see horrible noise. Still, I do want to own a piece of history!
@@Mr50mmish I ended up getting a mint D200 for $50, because of this video! What an absolute bargain. In my preliminary assessment it handles and feels ergonomically just like a Nikon D700. You can tell the D700 was clearly inspired by the D200's controls. However, the image quality leaves something to be desired, particularly ISO noise performance. I still enjoy the D200, but I think I will only reserve its use for outdoor use only.
@LiquidTurbo nice! $50 is an excellent price! Ah that's fair coming from the D700 the noise performance would be a notable difference! Hopefully in daylight it brings you some enjoyment!
I was looking at my D200 RAW's from 2008, and this is on a 27" 2K monitor - I was blown away to see how amazing they still look, the tonal quality, the image structure. Keep it below ISO 200 and you will be pleasantly surprised. All in all, absolutely stunning even in 2024!
I enjoyed your review of the D200. I never owned the D200, I had purchased my first digital in 2003 a new 6 MP D100 for @$1100. When the D200 came out in 2005 I was not in a position to spend another $1300 so, I stuck with my D100 till I purchased a D7000 in 2011 with a whopping 16 MP. Cheers!
It's in my top 3 of my most used cameras (and I own a lot of them 😂): Nikon D700, D200 & Canon 5D Classic. The files from the D200 are just soooo good. It's one of the cameras that I'll never sell.
How does the 5D compare to the D200, in terms of "joy to use" and image quality? I recently bought my D200, and I love it, and I'm really itching to get a 5D Classic. A friend owns one - maybe I can get him to sell it to me, since he hasn't used it in years.
@@raduionut78 for joy to use I honestly think the D200 wins. The more confident AF system and the manual glass metering really clinched it for me, plus general ergonomics of the D200 I personally like more. The 5D for me wins in overall IQ though, but the AF system really did kind of bug me, even though the centre point was always my go to, but that might be also the glass I kept using on it. For the longest time I didn't have any AF lenses for Nikon faster than 1.8 where I have had my canon 50mm 1.2 forever. The 5D classic tho has a nearly perfectly simple menu system that I really enjoyed. Overall I do like the D200 more but I think I will sooner or later get another 5DC and have a second look at that.
@@Mr50mmish Thanks a lot for your detailed reply! Really, really helpful! This gives me great confidence that I made a good choice getting the D200, since many people also talk about how nice the 5DC is. If my friend sells his 5D, and if it's a good deal, I'll jump on it. Cheers!
Eons ago I bought one because it was super cheap. I fell in love with it. The shutter is soft, doesn't "kick you" (feels easier to shoot slower speeds) and the image... oh, the output is just gorgeous. Regrettably I sold that one but bought another years later which I've been using to practice portraits and street.
I had one back in Jan 2006. I bought it new from a shop in Manchester UK, who just happened to have one as there was a waiting list for the camera. It cost me £1600.00 which was then about $2400.00. I sold it a few years ago for £250.00 incluidng the grip. Last week I bought a used one for £85.00 . It has less than 8000 actuations, but it was made in Thailand. My original D200 and I am sure that my D300 were made in Japan. Along with my original D70, they are a lot of fun to use. The ergonomics are typical Nikon, meaning first class.
@@Mr50mmish I paid nearly £1000.00 for a D70 and the 18~70 kit lens. I got £150.00 cashback from Nikon though. I still have the camera, they are about £70.00 on the bay now if in top notch condition. My canon 5D Classic was nearly £2200.00 including the 24~105 F4 L lens. Now it can be yours for less than £200.00. I wonder how much all these megabox Nikons, Canons and Sonys will be worth in 15 years time?
@@lensman5762 yeah the depreciation on some things has been insane but I'm also surprised how much some other cameras have held up or even gone up in value. Like the original Canon 1D or the Nikon D700, that seems to have kept a fairly high used value. Yeah the 5D has levelled out at about that price I feel like that is due to stay flat or maybe even go up a bit as used stock finally starts to break!
Thanks for this interesting review. I am very interested in the D200 but have never used a Nikon camera before. Can you tell me if it would be compatible with the 'Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G'? Thank you.
Hmm for the D200 ergonomically I think it wins against the 5Dc and the S5 pro. The 5Dc controls are fairly good mind you, especially for someone that has used canon in the past, but the D200 kind of feels like the controls are just a bit better thought out and layed out. The S5 having an identical layout is also good but I personally was annoyed at the UI (menus and what not) and general slowness of some things on the camera (mind you the last time I shot the S5 pro was maybe 10 years ago) For Images. I'm kind of more happy using the 5Dc than the D200 or S5. But I think this is also a bit bias, for a really long time I only shot canon and I normally shoot full frame and I have a pretty reasonable selection of EF lenses. More so than Nikon F mount. That said when it comes to wanting to shoot older CCDs the D200 climbs to the top of the list. I do tend to pick it up much more than other CCD APS-C cameras and I do choose it over my S3.
I wanted to buy one when they came out but they were out of my price range at the time but 2 years ago I was able to buy one for next to no money what a fabulous camera 📸📸
I don't use mine very often, but for what I'd get selling it, I plan to keep it. It was my main camera from 2013 (paid $350 for it) until 2019, when I got an EM5. It was just getting too heavy to haul around for hours on end. But from time to time I take it for an outing. Most recently, I used it-with my old SB24-to shoot my and my wife's new passport pics. I'd place it high on the list for folks on super tight budgets. A body for $100 and an MF Nikkor 35mm for for $80, and you're good to go. I'd get the 35 rather than 50, because you'll end up at 52.5mm. I don't think at 75mm equivalent is a good place to start. You can also find the old 24-50 AF for $50 to $100; not a great lens, but good for most purposes.
The D200 was one of my favorite cameras but, after getting the D200, it was relegated to studio work, with the D300 becoming my workhorse camera. Now the Z8 is that camera that is out and in my hands as it just feels so good. I carry it around without a strap, just feels right that way. 🙂
Great review. Heard lots of good things about this model but I can’t see myself getting one for the simple fact that it’s too big and heavy. I like that it has a pop up flash and I do already have a 50mm F1.8 lens fitted on a Nikon N60 35mm film camera. I am tempted to try a D200 but would rather save up for something else. A D80 might be a better move in my playbook but I do appreciate your video, however. Pictures look good quality!
Great review. Just got my D200 from Ebay. €150 shipping included from Switzerland to Spain. x2 original batteries, charger and a decent Agfa 8GB CF card. Probably expensive for Americans but I think it's a fair deal in Europe. Shutter count 18084! I love my D40 (got two of them) and its charming, vibrant CCD images and great ergonomics. As I will able to use four different Mount f lenses I already got (18-55, 70/200, 50 mm 1.8 I think I`m going to enjoy it a lot (I'm not a pro so don't care about having the last technology)
WTH?! I wish! I'm in Vancouver and the going price seems to be around 200 bucks these days. Isn't it crazy with all these influencers and such and the prices start creeping back up again... I was looking for a d700 and they're all about 400 bucks and so I was considering this model as it's half the price but hard to see much of any going for under $200.
Hopefully you can find one for less than that! Otherwise if you don't plan to use Manual focus glass the the D80 can still be had for pretty good price and is a very similar 10mp CCD to the D200 (not the same though as someone pointed out)
The D200 was my first DSLR after having used analog Nikons for many many years. The D200 felt like the first DSLR that didn't omit certain important features that I had come to love, so a professional feature set and compatibility to my old lenses made me buy this one. I've used it for many years and have since upgraded to a D700, which is basically a D200 in full frame.
The D200 was the second camera I ever got, which I bought used in probably 2008, as I wanted to upgrade from my first camera the D40. However I sold off all my Nikon DSLR gear a few years ago so I could move to mirrorless and Fuji, and frankly I have really loved it. But, the only gear I didn't sell (mostly because it was basically worthless lol), was my D200 and first kit lens the 18-55 f3.5-5.6 II, and I recently brought it out and have been shooting with it again... And it still is one of my favourite cameras I've ever used, and it honestly still holds up today. But now I want to spend money of F mount again and buy a 35mm f2D haha.
@@Mr50mmish I managed to get an X-S10 and 16-80 f4 on clearance for a great deal... which means I could still use a Nikon lens with it, but prices for the great vintage glass got pretty crazy during covid and they haven't really come down much, so it's just harder to justify spending the (what little lol) cash I have on a vintage lens when I could get something native that's new and 'better' for less. But I will still have fun shooting my D200 regardless of lens, which is really the most important part. And honestly, the lower IQ of the kit lens does lend itself to the 'vibes' haha.
@@ofthenearfuture that sounds like an awesome Fuji kit! That's fair a lot of older glass has come back into popularity. Haha well the vibes is a huge part of the fun :)
@@Mr50mmish Yeah it's pretty crazy how good mirrorless (esp with IBIS) cameras have gotten compared to DSLR's, in a number of metrics. But I mainly shoot landscape in the mountains while hiking so the Fuji kit is pretty much perfect for me. I've since added a pancake for travel/EDC and a fast fifty for portraits etc., and I'm adapting a Canon FD 80-200 f4 L for my tele (which is incredible). Moving to Fuji honestly reignited my creativity and passion for photography, but maybe mostly because of the massive selection of lenses available to me now, both with fantastic third-party options but also pretty much every lens made in the last 50 years haha. It's been a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to trying more vintage glass in the future... if I can afford it lol
I got the D200 when it came out. It was my first digital camera. I just pulled it down off the shelf for the first time in years. I moved first to the D750 and have now moved to the Z7. But the other day I was scrolling though old images and came across some bird photos I had taken. I was admiring the pictures and assumed they were from my D750 but when I looked at the data I was surprised to see it was my D200 and only 10 megapixels. So I came to UA-cam to see what people were saying about the D200 now. I had no idea there was some sort of weird nostalgia for CCDs. But that's cool. Anyway, all my batteries need charging but I plan on doing some shooting with the it tomorrow. Most of my F-mount lenses are gone but I have a few. One thing I can say for sure is that even though it is large the D200 feels great in the hand.
That's great that the D200 images still surprised you! Haha hopefully you have fun with it! Yeah the recent CCD resurgence is pretty interesting. I do like that the older cameras are getting some attention!
I have just bought a D200 11k clicks for £90 in the UK ebay , I have ENL3e batteries from my D90 and at 14 years old they all hold charge well , but bought the grip for the D90 with AA tray just in case.
Nice, that's pretty awesome that these original battery packs still have charge! Haha imagine a phone battery doing the same. Anyways hope you are enjoying the D200!
I bought my Nikon D200 within months of its release to replace an F2 and an F2S, both of which needed their shutter mechanisms rebuilt. I shot with the D200 until the end of 2011 when the sensor screen got several spots on it that showed up in almost every image. Recently, I had the sensor screen professionally cleaned, and I'm once again shooting with the D200. In the intervening years, I forgot almost everything I knew about the camera. So it's a learning process for me. The one modification I made to the camera was to add a double battery attachment so I could shoot longer without changing batteries. It makes the camera heavier, but the D200 was never a lightweight, point-and-shoot device. The only other modification I wish to make is to get a better viewing aperture. The stock one is simply too small in my opinion. I appreciate your video about the D200. It's very helpful. Best wishes.
That's great you still have your original D200! I'm glad it's still clicking! Hopefully you can pick up a sensor cleaning kit next time, it's not too bad to go on your own! Ah I got the battery grip as well, but I just don't tend to use it much I do find the single battery tends to be enough for most of my shooting!
@@Mr50mmish The cleaning only cost $35, but I'll likely buy a cleaning kit. There are lots of Nikon lenses available for the D200. I have the dual battery setup because I used to work for the National Outdoor Leadership School, and there were times when I'd literally be in the wilderness of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho for days without the ability to charge batteries. I always set out on excursions with six charged batteries.

With respect you are missing the point about CCD sensors. The image is more "organic" than the CMOS and produces images that don't look "Plastic and Digital" PLUS Black and White is FAR better than ANY CMOS sensor!!
Meh I intentionally didn't talk about that since there are a lot of reviewers who already talk about it in that light. Additionally while I do like CCD output I don't really think CMOS output look bad, I definitely don't think they look plastic/digital atleast not anymore in the early days with specifically jpeg output I would say that was truer, as a lot of jpeg engines of ole just smoothed out noise and detail, but it's better now. . As for B/W that is also arguable as that more likely is impacted by the Bayer filter array (or lack there of in some cameras) and the file baking rather than sensor type.

Awesome, I feel like the I should pick up the D700 one day, I've used it in the past but never owned!
Cheers!
@@raduionut78 No problem! Goodluck! Let me know if you get it! Cheers
Yay, I'm glad you re-purchased one! It is a nice shutter, well dampened for sure! Glad you are enjoying it as well!
Yeah the price of things in the past adjusted for inflation sometimes is mind boggling! But I'm glad either way a D200 has made it back to you!
Thank you.
There should be no issues using that lens on the D200!
@Mr50mmish thanks 👍
I’ve never owned a real camera but I like the film aesthetic of ccd cameras. I may cop one.
Still have my D200 always been reliable and as you say handles really well.
how do you think it compares against the 5d classic or against the S5 pro?
Hmm for the D200 ergonomically I think it wins against the 5Dc and the S5 pro. The 5Dc controls are fairly good mind you, especially for someone that has used canon in the past, but the D200 kind of feels like the controls are just a bit better thought out and layed out. The S5 having an identical layout is also good but I personally was annoyed at the UI (menus and what not) and general slowness of some things on the camera (mind you the last time I shot the S5 pro was maybe 10 years ago)
For Images.
D200 and D100 are still in my bag. Like you said, for us CCD with AF-D lens shooters, the D200 is the way to go.
Prices certainly fluctuate a bit. I purchased my excellent condition D200 from KEH about 2 years ago for $38.00 US.
That's an awesome price!
Great review,
Thank you! Cheers!
Ouu the Z8 sounds like an awesome camera too! Did you keep your d200?
@@Mr50mmish I had it up until 2021, when I sold off all my gear to go overseas. All I had was the Z6 II and a few lens.
@@waynerm002 Ah, fair enough!
Now there is a blast from past. I had the D70 then the D2x but the 200 was a brilliant camera
Yeah the D80 is a good alternative if you don't plan to use manual focus glass since you get a pretty substantial weight savings!
Yeah, that sounds a bit pricy to me, but it sounds also like it's a very fresh camera! 8gb CF card is a bonus! Hope you enjoy it!
I bought one for CAD$60 in Vancouver, BC last year. The camera is in great condition. What a deal!
That's an awesome deal! I hope you are enjoying it!
WTH?!
Both camera bodies are awesome! Yeah I agree both of those cameras didn't gate keep things!
Nikon D80 does have build in auto focus motor.
Yup it does! My bad.
My 2 main favorite cameras in shooting are Nikon D3s and NikonD200... spectacular photos.
Thanks! Ah I should do a D3s review later :)
Ah what Fuji camera did you end up getting? Also the 35mm F2 sounds like an awesome pairing for the D200! Doooo it!
Had 2 D80's and a D90 sold them to raise funds for a Nikon Z5 which is a nice camera, but I long for another early Nikon so I picked up a D200. I have a D7200 but still like the earlier Nikon"s more. Thanks for a good video !
Ah cool, how's the Z5? And are you enjoying the D200? Thanks for enjoying the video!
@@Mr50mmish The Z5 is a nice camera, light weight and easy to use. I love the D200, the sensor does a nice job on the colors. don't need much in the way of post processing even shooting RAW. Both camera's have their good points wouldn't knock either one.
I sold mine last month and now so many videos about it are popping out lol
Haha time to buy it back!
Yes, I love my D200 too; I already have three of them because some of them are offered so cheaply and I have to save them....:-)
In addition to the D200, I have several D300, D700, D2x, D3 - but I still often use the D200 because of the beautiful colors it delivers - the files are really excellent and the rework is therefore done quickly.
