Great video. This must have been a massive undertaking. It made me a little sad how many of my favourites weren't on your list. I suppose it goes by what you played as a youngster. Anyway thanks for the exciting video.
@@carlsaveus1735ith the vast catalog of the C64, there are sure to be gems that get left off the list, even with 200 spots. For example, I was surprised that Paradroid and Ghostbusters were not on the list.
Ive seen top 10's, top 20's even top 50's, but never have i seen a TOP 200. What a huge undertaking, a real labour of love. Great video, some real gems in here.
@@BastichB64K I never knew the C64 had so many games. When I was a kid I gave mine up for an IBM XT. Maybe I should have stuck with it but on the other hand, my PC kept me really busy.
The best commodore 64 games video I have ever seen. I was a massive C64 fan and I remember half of your games you've shown. The other half I've never heard of like Stealth fighter and the submarine games. I read Zzap64 so I don't know how I missed these. I always wonder how they managed to squeeze such great games into just 64k of RAM. That is like a text file now. Incredible. And the music creators were great becoming house hold names. The voice samples were exciting back then. No Internet back then so no viruses or malware. Games were cheaper with no packs to buy or season passes. Then there was the budget games at £2.99 that were sometimes better than full price games. But the game loading speeds were agonisingly slow on tape. My favourite games were Wizball, Nebulus, Paradroid, Trailblazer, Mercenary and World Leaderboard. And who didn't get strip poker that exposed those female breasts when you were a teenager?
Excellent work my friend. I never imagined that there was someone on the face of the earth who would dedicate so much time, effort, dedication and love to something innovative (for the time) as the Commodore was. Thanks for keeping that memory alive. Excellent work, I never tire of repeating it. Greetings from Argentina (Drean Commodore 64)
Finally finished this! I'm not super familiar with the C64 so this was very entertaining to learn about a ton of games I've never heard of. Amazing effort on this one.
Amazing video. I love that you dedicate some time for each game. It's not 3-4 gameplay seconds like on every other videos / lists, but some real, good overview :)
Thanks dude I always try to give every game some respect , I completely despise the types of videos you mentioned .. they add no context to game preservation
The effort you put into these videos really works, great stuff! Racing car destruction set was way ahead of its time, I hope you have given it some time.
I didn't have a C64, but a number of friends did, so this still brings back some memories. What an absolutely amazing video. I can't imagine how long it would have taken to put this together.
Decades later I still remember so many sounds from those games. Like the general walking around music from Murder on the Mississippi. Hardball 2 is still the only baseball game I'd replay. I would have a different top 20 game list.
A little known fact about the first Super Pipeline game is that it was originally developed to be a coin-op, however it was cancelled due to the fact that the crash happened in North America, as it was a US company that the game was being developed for. Taskset started out AW Electronics, a British based developer of arcade games...mostly for Centuri Electronics
This is an epic video... re-discovered some games I like to try playing again. Thanks for putting this togeather. Must have taken a long time to compile this! 👍
I actually preferred the C64 version to the Amiga version. The Amiga version just came off as another unpolished direct Atari ST port, and it showed. The original ST version was pretty good too, but the Amiga version just lacked polish, especially in the gameplay department
I'm at 2 hours and 12 minutes into the video after watching the 200 to 101, and I've gotta sat what an absolutely AWESOME video. Really looking forward to seeing what the top 100 is going to be, but I'll probably get the most benefit out of what I've just watched, as I'm guessing I'll know most of the top 100... Gonna have a lot of fun checking out the games I haven't played or heard of, that have now perked up my interest on here... Great stuff, and keep up the excellent work!
Yet another massive masterpiece of a video to watch (and listen to) over and over again - which I am in the process of doing right now. I raise my cup to the day, hopefully close, your channel reaches the critical mass it deserves and gets subscribers flocking in in the hundreds of thousands. Thanks ever so much for... so much! 🙏👾
Wow! What an amazingly well done, thorough, thoughtful video! I was 13 when I got my C64 and a Lode Runner cartridge. I loved my Amiga that came later but there is nothing like my first true love.
What amazing work, mate! So many gems still to explore or re-visit. I love the fact that Neuromancer is on the list and so high up. I played it all the way through THREE times, last time as recently as a few years ago. The disc swopping at the end is insane but worth it for the atmosphere: 'That's what you get for being an ape descendant!'. Oh, and Paradroid, and, and, and...
Thank you so much for putting so much work into this video. And thank for reminding me of so much gaming goodness I had forgotten about. Regarding Ocean Ranger that was my favourite of bunch, and Katakis was also my favourite shoot'em up. Good times! I played much of the 200 games and I noted which games didn't play on the C64. Some I had on the Amiga or the PC: Orc Attack, Moonfall, Ninja Spirit, Antiriad, Sly Spy, Led Storm, Smash TV, Keys to Maramon, Hard'n'Heavy, The Staff of Karnath, Deja Vu, The Legend of Blacksilver, Shinobi, Flimbo's Quest, Tusker, Master of the Lamps, Wasteland (got it on pc), Die Hard, Entombed, Mugsy's Revenge!, Rock'n Wrestle, Tass Times In Tonetown, First Samurai (got it on Amiga), PSI-5 Trading Company, Supremacy (got it on Amiga), The Pawn, North & South (got it on Amiga), Elvira (got it on Amiga), Might & Magic (got it on PC), Murder of the Mississippi, Enforcer, Ultima 6 (got it on PC), King's Bounty (got it on Amiga), The Goonies, Mayhem in Monsterland, Sentinel Worlds 1, Intrigue, Nemesis The Warlock, Legacy of the Ancients, Dan Dare, Red Storm Rising, Rocket Ranger (got it on Amiga), Mean Streets (go it on PC), Space Rogue. 45 in all; ten of those I have on other systems. Rock on!
The amount of work you put in here is incredible. I don't have to completely agree with your list to tell you - this was an awesome tour of the C64s great library. Thanks for this !
There are Neurons firing in my brain that have been lost for decades. Thanks for the memories and the historical record which must be saved. Somebody needs to give you a doctorate for this work.
This was brilliant mate. A few games I sadly missed out on. But my favourite game Space Rogue was second place. And the memories. Like that digitised version of U2 playing in turbo out run. Loved it.
I like how you always give props to the musicians who made these games. Great video. Many games I remember playing, but some are news to me! Love it. Thank you.
Cheers thank you . Im always so surprised how these guys seem to get no credit in videos , the SID is one of the most vital parts of C64 gaming IMHO. Thank you again for watching and please browse the rest of the channel as there is plenty of C64 videos you may like 😀👍👍
What an amazing video! I'm not usually into top lists but the production quality, adding in stuff like game reviews from the era, tidbits about developers and composers, cutting in promos for other documentaries and simply showcasing some of the best the C64 had to offer made this an absolute blast to watch! I had the pleasure of playing most of the games in the list as a child but even then you managed to show me games I somehow managed to miss altogether. Definitely subscribed!
i remember commodore 64 games being much more graphically enhanced. poor memory aside, i can thank my 64 for planting the IT seeds which led me into a very lucrative career as a software engineer. it was a good little machine for its day.
Its not poor memory , these games look really good on crt tvs or monitors bear in mind they were never meant to be displayed on the tvs we have today hence the more blocky look to them .
There were many games that looked (and played) better on ZX-Spectrum: Exolon, Zynaps, Myth, Saboteur, Sim City, Thanatos, MASK III, Fred. ZX was not even a gaming machine 😊
What an undertaking this video was I'm sure. Two HUNDRED games covered. Absolutely impressive effort to have put this together. Of course, nobody will ever agree 100% with anyone else's "top games" list, but..... I can see where you are coming from with your selections, and along with your explanation of why certain games were placed in certain positions, it's a respectable list, indeed. Saw a few games in here that I've never even heard of, and of course, there were some entries that I was a bit surprised to see missing. In any case though, nice work on this video, bud.
I hadn't really played adventure games until I came across The Master of Magic in 85/86.... You load that up and you're intantly hooked by the storyline & the Hubbard soundtrack 😎
This video is insane like your series about Arcade games. Even though I was born in '84 and was familiar with most of the consoles from the 80's, I only got contact with PCs in the 90's and the Commodore 64 was a total mystery to me until recently. It was through your channel that I came to know about most of so many amazing games
Cheers dude thanks for watching , it always cool to hear when people such as yourself are learning and discovering these classic c64 games now , thank you so much for watching and i hope you had fun .
I left buying C64 games around 1987/88. Amazing what quality carried on after that time. Enjoyed your personal list. Loads I didn't know. Amazing amount of work has gone into this. I know how long it took me to do a 15 minute video recently, let a lone a 5 hour video!
For me it was: Lode Runner, Spy vs Spy, Fort Apocalypse, Blue Max, Zork 1-3, The Bard's Tale, Ultima IV, Zorro, Karateka, Autoduel, Master of the Lamps, Phantasie, Ancient Art of War, Champions of Krynn, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. I think those were all '80s games . . . Excellent job on your compilation. You are a true expert, man!
This video dropped like an atom bomb on my C64 cassette impulse buying habits :) Much respect for compiling such a great list. Found a lot of great C64 games I've never heard of before. Sac4ed Armor of Antiriad - this game has style!
Thank you so much. What an incredible show. You put in so many classic titles, other "best of C64" lists are missing. So many ports from the Speccy, I grew up with. Background info is also amazing. I subbed.🤩
Great movie Bastisch! :) I finished watching today. I wrote down about 20 games that I didn't know before. Huge respect for the work you put into preparing the material;).
What an awesome video! I started this when it was released and just finished. I didn’t want to complete it all, so enjoyable. I like that there are many games I didn’t know and will try out, it’s really great you provided depth of description of each game! Cheers!
Cheers thx , i was trying give each game its own individual attention, i found from watching these types of videos that nobody really does that and it's usually just a piece of unedited footage with no context . Glad you enjoyed it .
Hi Brendan, thank You so much for this epic episode! 🙏 I enjoyed every minute. My alltime favourite is also The Last Ninja, so we're brothers in mind. 😉 Wish You all the best and look forward to Your upcoming videos. 👍
Racing destruction set was a game my friends and I went back to again and again over the years. Making our own tracks ( and of course setting the gravity to “moon” to make it even more exciting ). great game.
Cheers , thanks for checking it out . My goal is always to introduce people to games they may have missed and archiving info about classics nobody cares about anymore so thank you very much for watching 😀🕹️👍
So many memories here! Also lots of games that I remember seeing in the ads of zzap64 but never played. Thanks for your massive commitment to the games!
Thanks a lot for this list (and the work behind). I had a ZX Spectrum at that times and i didn't know there were so many good C64 exclusives. I have never seen or read about many of them
Great list, i can say that i played like 90% of the games on your list, on my list i would include Trolls and Tribulations, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Realm of Impossibility, Gateway to Apshai, Castle Wolfenstein, Accolade Comics, Heart of Africa, Windwalker, Zork, The Three Stooges, Stellar 7, Blood and Guts, Dragon's Lair, Mars Saga, Druid, The Great American Cross-Country Road Race...
Amazing video, and a great project. Really threw me down memory lane. My personal favorites not in this list: Head over heels, Mail ordered monsters, Alcazar. Great video! Thanks!
Wow, just finished. I'll overlook the lack of Wizball because the video was just so damn good! Or maybe it was in there and I cant remember as there was so much content. Excellent stuff as always.
This a fantastic video!!! I love your enthusiasm for each game, as well as your attention to the fine details and knowledge of the people involved and where the game fits in with their work as a whole. I couldn’t help but go and check a lot of these out after what you had to say about them. And sure enough, I discovered some amazing games that I hadn’t come across before. What a machine the C64 is and thank you for this video.
Amazing list--thank you for doing this!! Great to see my all-time C64 favorites reflected here--Ghostbusters, Pirates!, Space Rogue, and Airborne Ranger chief among them!!
This was simply amazing! Seeing all those forgotten gems again :) Thanks for reminding us about the good times :) Superb video! Watched it all over four days :)
Well that was an epic video and some interesting early titles which I missed back in the day which I'll now go and have a look at. The Last Ninja is also my number 1 for exactly thiose nostalgic reasons you mentioned, it was the first C64 game I can remember being really excited for although I think I got it via Dodgy Dave (he gets around that bloke). Even the mutli-load on that game was amazing as you got to listen to more of that awesome soundtrack! Anyway, great work and looking forward to Part 3 of your arcade mega-documentary
Cheers thanks , yeah dodgy Dave gets a round doesn't he 🤣 . The 90's arcade is the next big one ... Not coming out any time soon but its been worked on 😀👍
Interesting fact about the Commodore 64 version of RodLand. It was coded by Steve Snake, who later went on to develop the rather excellent SEGA multisystem emulator, KEGA Fusion. Snake also coded a decent Arkanoid clone called Impact (or Blockbuster as it was called in North America), and also coded the C64 conversion of NARC also...although the less said about that conversion, the better. He did a few games on the Spectrum as well, most notably, Horace and the Robots, that was released in 2017. A rather excellent clone of the Stern arcade classic, Berzerk, except with the main protagonist replaced with the Horace character.
Last Ninja was one of the first games I had for the C64 that stood out the most and to this day is still one of the best games for the system. I would play it over and over just to hear the music! LN2 as well! Thinking other mentions could be: Dragon's Lair, Dark Castle, Borrowed Time, Moon Patrol, Mr Robot, and Ninja. Awesome list!
My absolute favorite games for the C64 were, "The Adventure Construction Set" (I pushed this damn game to it's limit and made games with it that I know damn well that the designer never dreamed of). Alien by Argus Press Software, Amsoft (Still the most accurate Alien franchise game in my opinion.). Summer Games and Summer Games II. The Bard's Tale. Karate Champ. My god, my friends and I were experts at the actual arcade game and just had massive battles on it. We even shunned Street Fighter II to play Karate Champ against each other in the arcades. And the C64 version was pretty damn close to the arcade game.
Despite popular opinion i also like the c64 version of karate champ 👍 you might want to check out my video on all the Aliens games if you loved the original 🕹️
Crazy list! It's so educational to see this. My C64 experience as a kid was 95% whatever bootleg copies my dad brought home. Everyone can remember how impossible most of these games were without the manual, and all I had to go on with most games was a label with the title scribbled on in marker. My hands down #1 game by FAR is Crossroads. It's essentially Wizards of Wor (even the enemies are the same), but ten times the size and speed. It's amazing to see the C64 pull off that many moving objects at once and barely slow down. It's also 2 player co-op, THE most fun co-op you'll ever have on the system. Check out a footage video and download an emulated copy. Once you play it, you'll never go back to Wizards of Wor. The reason you hardly ever see it mentioned is that it was never really commercially released (to my knowledge). It was distributed on a home brew game disk that came with Compute's! Gazette, one of the popular American magazines of the 80s for the C64. It's just even more amazing that an amateur coded the whole thing as a free tie-in. They even included all the raw code in the back if you felt like typing the entire thing out! Maniac Mansion was one of the first games to freak me out. I was 8 at the time, and I considered it a horror game at the time because I was constantly scared of my characters being captured. The adrenaline when I dashed down the halls to safe rooms was unreal. It was only years later that I learned from a hint book about the loose brick that let you out of the dungeon. At the time, I thought you were permanently stuck down there! Additional trivia: it was the very first known instance of a video game using the term "cutscene". I want to go check out Project Firestart now! Looks like the great great Grandfather of System Shock. Good thing I missed it as a kid. If Maniac Mansion freaked me out, imagine what Firestart would have done to me. Archon was some of the best 2 player competitive. Although the balance moderately favored the evil team since all their shots were faster and the phoenix sucked. Spy vs Spy was the best 2 player competitive...up until someone realized how easy it was to stalemate every game. If you fell behind and the other player was going to win, you just spammed traps everywhere. It was impossible to go hunt down and pick up trap-counter items faster than the other player could spam traps. Sure the spammer would never win, but neither would the other player. Spam traps until the time ran out. Beachhead 2 was forbidden in my house by my mother. The violence was just too brutal with all those screams! My parents refused to give me any answers for Carmen Sandiego games. "Go look it up in the encyclopedias! It's what we bought them for!" 50 Mission Crush is one I would throw in. It was basically a turn based version of Ace of Aces, where you managed a B17 bomber and its entire crew. Felt kind of like wartime Oregon Trail where you named the crew after people you know and see who survived until the end. That's all my memories!
One of the best c64-top-lists for sure, greatly appriciated, I certainly wouldn't mind the full top-500-list! :) No love for Wizball or Kikstart II? Love those especially with two-players...
Definitely love for those games ... There's just too many 🤣 those were just my personal favs. Thx for watching and the whole list is written on scraps of paper ... Im old school
Encounter!! I’ve been trying to remember the name of that game for years. I found it on a disk of cracked games when I was 12 (1986) and I loved it. Since I got my 64maxi I’ve been trying to remember the name of it. Yay!
Awesome video...its a list of sorts, but feels like a docu.... So many good games and I played most of them....love the attention to one of my favourites....Exploding Fist II
Cheers thx , people usually make these kind of list videos very poorly in my opinion by not giving each game the attention it deserves so thats why its got a bit of a docu feel to it . Cheers for watching 🕹️👍
Still working my way through this. I think you must be congratulated on the production values. Snippets and shots of the games you actually own. They microprose collections and gameplay you present is excellent. Not re-hashed crap but your own content. Helps that you have done previous docos on system 3 etc. keep it up 👍
Very well done! I bought an Amiga in 87 so I missed many of these. I'll look into these again when I retire in a few years and play them on emulators :)
Amazing work on this! Very thoughtful and informed selection. Project Firestart in particular is one I'd never even heard of that looks absolutely mindblowing! Excellent game-rooms too! Another lovely anniversary present for our favourite breadbox. A few C64 game recommendations for anyone reading (sorry if any of these were mentioned!): -Below The Root - an excellent open-world adventure taking place in a world with towns built into 7 massive trees. You control one of 5 characters from either of the two races who are trying to bridge the strife between the ground-dwelling Erdlings and the Kindars living in the trees. The best hope for this lies with the lost boy Raamo, who you must seek out in this impressive "metroidvania". You'll find yourself gliding between treetop villages and speaking with villagers, avoiding kidnappers hostile to your plans, hacking your way through thick vines to learn hermits' secrets, and gaining psychic abilities such as "pense" to read minds and "grunspeke" to grow branches and reach new areas. A really peaceful game in the sea of shooty-shoot games, violence is almost impossible and can hinder your character's progress, even stealing food or crashing in a stranger's bed are forbidden. A beautiful, peaceful journey through a lush world that invites you to explore. -Alleykat - a simple, fast vertical combat racing game where you pilot speedy, racer-type vehicles on various planets to earn your way to the big-leagues. This one is pretty tricky and you'll probably crash quite a bit at first, but there's a palpable arcade "tightness" to the experience and especially sound design that I can only compare to an 80s-future pinball machine. -Cave of the Word Wizard - as an early edu-tainment game, it isn't graphically impressive or even that great, but this one has huge nostalgia for me and quite nice speech synthesis too! "SPELL: CHALKBOARD" *spells it out* "SUPER! SEE YOU LATER!" *wizard gives you a band-aid and dematerializes* "SPELL: ALLIGATOR" *spells it wrong* "IT'S GETTING DAAARKER!". I still don't know if he's supposed to be hostile or what, but it's his cave and we need to respect his wishes, I guess. -Blood n' Guts - like an Epyx "-Games" game but feudal and brutal! Pick your brute and face off against other trogs in such events as the Cat Toss, distance leaping from a 3-storey tower, chugging ale, rolling a boulder faster/over your opponent, and other tasteful stuff. It's well-done and a fun 2-player addition to the usual skiing and diving stuff. -Dream House - taking a different direction here, this is a quality title that lets you select from a choice of empty houses to furnish, paint, landscape, etc. Each house contains a few rooms and there are even assets like a TV, fireplace, birdcage, etc. that feature sound and animation. I think C64 fans in general could dig this title that was probably aimed toward little girls, if they're looking for something chill. Or you could put fireplace and candle fires all over the place, it's your dream house!
5 well spent, relaxing hours, filled with pure, overflowing, unadultered C64 love. Thanks a lot Bastich! 9.9 out of 10 for this one, just because it's missing my own personal favorite Cloud Kingdoms - pet peeves aside, fantastic work!!!
Finally got to the end after many sittings lol. Fantastic list of C64 games, many memories and a brilliant look back to the best if times. Wonderful dedication and work have gone into this again and truly top way to celebrate 40 years of the best 8 bit computer ever. My favourite C64 game was the stunning Wizball.
About halfway through the video so far. Being introduced to a lot of titles, but I’m also surprised how many of these I had as a kid. I recall my Dad got a couple boxes worth of C64 disks from a couple guys he worked with, mostly bootleg compilations, and as a result we had probably a few hundred games. Mostly rubbish, but in that wondrous mine of floppies were numerous diamonds to be found, and as a kid I loved pouring through that mass of disks seeking those gems.
Nice to see some more complex games like Strike Fleet get some love! Those games had more of a learning curve to get into, so many would pass them over without discovering what they have to offer.
Great list, including some gems that I missed back in the days. I knew what your number one would be though, I share it ;). On my first visit to Kyoto I had to think of it - The Higashiyama area really reminded me of the game and gave me some nostalgic feelings :).
Gunship by Microprose is the best C64 game of all time. Closely followed by another Microprose title, Sid Meier's Pirates! Microprose made the best games for the C64 and Gunship was the pinnacle of how far the C64 could be pushed in terms of it's limited hardware. The game itself is action packed and exiting. I still play it 36 years later.
Games I played: 35:48 Wizard of Wor (I unfortunately only played the Ultimax version, but it was still my favorite game on the system.) 2:12:41 Choplifter (I played this a lot but it was always frustrating to play as a five year old.) 2:38:03 Super Zaxxon 2:56:26 Forbidden Forest (super scary) I know there were more, one was a simple driving game, and I think my mom tried to make us play some math or reading games, but these are the ones that gave me the nostalgic kick.
Great work! Five hours of nostalgia. Finally I miss some of my favorites. I loved oil Imperium and Fugger (one of the first economic simulation games). Hexenküche 1 and 2 and Of course Night mission. The best pinball simulation on the bread box Thank you For your work

thanks....it took this dickhead 1min and 16 sec to get to the point of the video.
Woah, amazing work!
Great video. This must have been a massive undertaking. It made me a little sad how many of my favourites weren't on your list. I suppose it goes by what you played as a youngster. Anyway thanks for the exciting video.
No "Trolls and Tribulations" from 1984? Really?
@@carlsaveus1735ith the vast catalog of the C64, there are sure to be gems that get left off the list, even with 200 spots. For example, I was surprised that Paradroid and Ghostbusters were not on the list.
Thanks for the massive amount of work you've put in to make this list.
My pleasure , enjoy the show
@@BastichB64K An amazing list you put together here...
@@999jay999 cheers thx
Ive seen top 10's, top 20's even top 50's, but never have i seen a TOP 200.
What a huge undertaking, a real labour of love.
Great video, some real gems in here.
Yeah i figured none of that was enough so just did 200 ... Im still not satisfied ... Probably continue it to 500 😂
@@BastichB64K I never knew the C64 had so many games. When I was a kid I gave mine up for an IBM XT. Maybe I should have stuck with it but on the other hand, my PC kept me really busy.
@@FriedChairs this is hardly anything to be honest 🕹️👍🤣
Cheers thank you for watching and yeah I'd be lying if I never said i didnt play Strip Poker as a kid 😂😂😂
Amazing list, video and memories. Your work is much appreciated 🙏
Thank you 😀🕹️
Excellent work my friend.
Thats the main focus of my channel, thanks for watching cheers 😀🕹️
Was great contributing to the video. It turned out great. Editing is amazing my friend.
Cheers thx , awesome to have you in it 🕹️👍
Thanks for sharing this! My history with the C64 is similar. Many of the games I was familiar with. Amazing range of games this system has.
Its so diverse its ridiculous
Finally finished this! I'm not super familiar with the C64 so this was very entertaining to learn about a ton of games I've never heard of. Amazing effort on this one.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it and found out about some new stuff , 😀👍 fantastic
The Bohemian Rhapsody of top C64 games. Magnificent.
10:20 "It's a charming throwback to a less complicated time…" - I shed a tear hearing that.
You and Elon are my favorite South-Africans.
Cheers , its true and thank you
Amazing video.
Its in there fear not 👍🕹️
moon gravity a must try!
The work behind this video is impressive. You have a very good patience putting all this together.
Thanks for all the memories.
No probs , thanks for taking the time to watch 👍
I didn't have a C64, but a number of friends did, so this still brings back some memories. What an absolutely amazing video. I can't imagine how long it would have taken to put this together.
Thanks for checking it out and yeah it took a while 🤣👍
Decades later I still remember so many sounds from those games. Like the general walking around music from Murder on the Mississippi.
Hardball 2 is still the only baseball game I'd replay.
I would have a different top 20 game list.
Awesome thank you for watching 😀👍
"Jumpman", "Spy vs. Spy", "BC's Quest for Tires", "Impossible Mission II" and "Archon" - those are still my 'go to' games on the C64 🙂
Nice bunch , imp mission 2 is so underated
A little known fact about the first Super Pipeline game is that it was originally developed to be a coin-op, however it was cancelled due to the fact that the crash happened in North America, as it was a US company that the game was being developed for. Taskset started out AW Electronics, a British based developer of arcade games...mostly for Centuri Electronics
Nice , thats a cool bit of info that i never knew very interesting
This is an epic video... re-discovered some games I like to try playing again. Thanks for putting this togeather. Must have taken a long time to compile this! 👍
😀👍 yeah it took a while 😂😂😂
Pirates and Defender of the Crown were epic. Loved those two games
So good 🕹️👍 love em
I actually preferred the C64 version to the Amiga version. The Amiga version just came off as another unpolished direct Atari ST port, and it showed. The original ST version was pretty good too, but the Amiga version just lacked polish, especially in the gameplay department
Your knowledge of C64 games and ability to see their quality is beyond reproach! Well done!
I must congratulate you for this not just impressive but best c64-games-ranking video of all time.
You're a retro legend!
Cheers thank you , glad you enjoyed it
Incredible effort, so grateful to have familiar memories brought back and new opportunities at games we missed back in the day. ❤
Cheers thx fir watching
I'm at 2 hours and 12 minutes into the video after watching the 200 to 101, and I've gotta sat what an absolutely AWESOME video. Really looking forward to seeing what the top 100 is going to be, but I'll probably get the most benefit out of what I've just watched, as I'm guessing I'll know most of the top 100... Gonna have a lot of fun checking out the games I haven't played or heard of, that have now perked up my interest on here... Great stuff, and keep up the excellent work!
Thanks enjoy the rest of the show
Wow, 200 C64 games! Almost 5 hours! Massive respect for making this list!
Cheers thanks , i wanted to do 500 but it would have been about 12 hours long 🤣 thx for sharing the vid on twitter , cheers
Yet another massive masterpiece of a video to watch (and listen to) over and over again - which I am in the process of doing right now. I raise my cup to the day, hopefully close, your channel reaches the critical mass it deserves and gets subscribers flocking in in the hundreds of thousands. Thanks ever so much for... so much! 🙏👾
My pleasure thanks for watching and hopefully one day that'll happen 😀✅
Thank you for the video. I played most of the games presented and it gave some nostalgy to watch them again. Cheers from Finland!
No problem , glad you enjoyed it 😀👍👍👍
It was a real pleasure to see this video!
Many good games and a lot of work from you BastichB 64K! Thanks!
Thanks for watching , cheers
I love these lists. Always interesting to see what people loved on the C64
Wow! What an amazingly well done, thorough, thoughtful video! I was 13 when I got my C64 and a Lode Runner cartridge. I loved my Amiga that came later but there is nothing like my first true love.
Very cool ! Nice start with Lode Runner as well 🕹️👍
What amazing work, mate!
Neuromancer never gets mentioned on any C64 list which is ridiculous, it had to. Be in there 🕹️👍👍
Thank you so much for putting so much work into this video. And thank for reminding me of so much gaming goodness I had forgotten about.
Regarding Ocean Ranger that was my favourite of bunch, and Katakis was also my favourite shoot'em up. Good times!
I played much of the 200 games and I noted which games didn't play on the C64. Some I had on the Amiga or the PC:
Orc Attack, Moonfall, Ninja Spirit, Antiriad, Sly Spy, Led Storm, Smash TV, Keys to Maramon, Hard'n'Heavy, The Staff of Karnath, Deja Vu, The Legend of Blacksilver, Shinobi, Flimbo's Quest, Tusker, Master of the Lamps, Wasteland (got it on pc), Die Hard, Entombed, Mugsy's Revenge!, Rock'n Wrestle, Tass Times In Tonetown, First Samurai (got it on Amiga), PSI-5 Trading Company, Supremacy (got it on Amiga), The Pawn, North & South (got it on Amiga), Elvira (got it on Amiga), Might & Magic (got it on PC), Murder of the Mississippi, Enforcer, Ultima 6 (got it on PC), King's Bounty (got it on Amiga), The Goonies, Mayhem in Monsterland, Sentinel Worlds 1, Intrigue, Nemesis The Warlock, Legacy of the Ancients, Dan Dare, Red Storm Rising, Rocket Ranger (got it on Amiga), Mean Streets (go it on PC), Space Rogue. 45 in all; ten of those I have on other systems.
Rock on!
No problems , thx for also sharing your gaming experience 🕹️👍👍
i splitted this massive memory lane into 4 days.. and wow its a amazing job again.. very good content
Cheers , it took forever to make and probably takes longer to watch 🤣👍
This is one of the best things I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. There were a ton of games I’ve never seen before that look amazing. Thanks so much. 👍🏻
My pleasure dude , if you like arcade games check out my Arcades the Universal Language videos part1&2 . I appreciate you checking it out thank you 👍
The amount of work you put in here is incredible. I don't have to completely agree with your list to tell you - this was an awesome tour of the C64s great library. Thanks for this !
Thanks a lot , the order of the games is unimportant, its just a showcase for the C64 in the end . Thanks for watching 👍
There are Neurons firing in my brain that have been lost for decades. Thanks for the memories and the historical record which must be saved. Somebody needs to give you a doctorate for this work.
Thx for watching much appreciated
Absolutely superb, there are many which I've never played along with a few I had forgotten, so cheers !
Cheers thx for watching
This was brilliant mate. A few games I sadly missed out on. But my favourite game Space Rogue was second place. And the memories. Like that digitised version of U2 playing in turbo out run. Loved it.
Cheers thanks , I love Space Rogue
Much appreciated thank you , check out the backlog of vids theres plenty more. C64 goodness and cheers for the subscription 😀
i remember commodore 64 games being much more graphically enhanced. poor memory aside, i can thank my 64 for planting the IT seeds which led me into a very lucrative career as a software engineer. it was a good little machine for its day.
Cheers thx , yeah these aren't the best of all time just simply my personal favs
Holy moly. Thanks for your efforts Bastich! Nice C64 List
Cheers thanks 🕹️👍
I hadn't really played adventure games until I came across The Master of Magic in 85/86.... You load that up and you're intantly hooked by the storyline & the Hubbard soundtrack 😎
Yeah its a simple but addictive light RPG
Thanks for such an in-depth video. Took me 3 days to watch. Brought back some great memories of games I had forgotten.
Awesome glad you got some old nostalgic memories triggered 🕹️👍
This video is insane like your series about Arcade games. Even though I was born in '84 and was familiar with most of the consoles from the 80's, I only got contact with PCs in the 90's and the Commodore 64 was a total mystery to me until recently. It was through your channel that I came to know about most of so many amazing games
Cheers dude thanks for watching , it always cool to hear when people such as yourself are learning and discovering these classic c64 games now , thank you so much for watching and i hope you had fun .
Absolute brilliant video! Shows the major versatility of the C64. Just ordered the mini!
😃🕹️👍
I left buying C64 games around 1987/88. Amazing what quality carried on after that time. Enjoyed your personal list. Loads I didn't know. Amazing amount of work has gone into this. I know how long it took me to do a 15 minute video recently, let a lone a 5 hour video!
Thank you sir , glad you discovered some new stuff and yeah it took ages to make 😂
For me it was: Lode Runner, Spy vs Spy, Fort Apocalypse, Blue Max, Zork 1-3, The Bard's Tale, Ultima IV, Zorro, Karateka, Autoduel, Master of the Lamps, Phantasie, Ancient Art of War, Champions of Krynn, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. I think those were all '80s games . . . Excellent job on your compilation. You are a true expert, man!
Awesome list there , some of those were pc only but great games also . Secret Weapons on DOS was epic 🕹️👍
@@BastichB64K Yeah, I had an Atari 800 and an old PC clone. Kind of a mix.
This video dropped like an atom bomb on my C64 cassette impulse buying habits :)
Much respect for compiling such a great list. Found a lot of great C64 games I've never heard of before. Sac4ed Armor of Antiriad - this game has style!
Cheers glad you managed to find lots of new games , thx 🕹️👍
Thank you so much. What an incredible show. You put in so many classic titles, other "best of C64" lists are missing. So many ports from the Speccy, I grew up with. Background info is also amazing. I subbed.🤩

@@BastichB64K I guess I'll love it. And I have to watch the 4 hours long video completely next to get all this detailed information. 😊
Great movie Bastisch! :) I finished watching today. I wrote down about 20 games that I didn't know before. Huge respect for the work you put into preparing the material;).
Cheers thx , glad you found some new stuff thats awesome 👍👍👍👍
what a beast of a video. Massive respect for the work you put into this. It was a pleasure to watch and a great refreshment.
Cheers thx much appreciated
Thank you for the amazing video! So many "new" games to try, and surprisigly high on the list too
Cheers , enjoy the games 😀👍
Thank you sir for watching the whole thing , Last Ninja has so many memories and good times associated with it for me it just had to be #1😀👍
Thanks, I have no idea when I will ever find time to watch the entire video 😀 Maybe split it next time, not sure. Great effort nevertheless
Thx , once you start you may not wanna stop 😂👍
Racing destruction set was a game my friends and I went back to again and again over the years. Making our own tracks ( and of course setting the gravity to “moon” to make it even more exciting ). great game.
Yeah very cool game , the construction part is ace
You could create insane jumps racing on the moon, it was great!
This list is an excellent resource for discovering C64 games. Great work; much appreciated.
Cheers , thanks for checking it out . My goal is always to introduce people to games they may have missed and archiving info about classics nobody cares about anymore so thank you very much for watching 😀🕹️👍
Fantastic effort here.
Cheers thx 🕹️
So many memories here! Also lots of games that I remember seeing in the ads of zzap64 but never played. Thanks for your massive commitment to the games!
Cheers , there's so many not on the list but glad you had fun watching it 😀👍
Thanks a lot for this list (and the work behind). I had a ZX Spectrum at that times and i didn't know there were so many good C64 exclusives. I have never seen or read about many of them
This is just a small selection of a 500 game list i made 🕹️👍 thx for watching
Great list, i can say that i played like 90% of the games on your list, on my list i would include Trolls and Tribulations, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Realm of Impossibility, Gateway to Apshai, Castle Wolfenstein, Accolade Comics, Heart of Africa, Windwalker, Zork, The Three Stooges, Stellar 7, Blood and Guts, Dragon's Lair, Mars Saga, Druid, The Great American Cross-Country Road Race...
Those are all quality , i may continue the list to #500 ... Im considering it as i had to omit so many great games
Stellar 7 was great, it was Battlezone done right. Pity that the official port of Battlezone was mediocre at best
Holy shit! Nobody knows Gateway to Apshai! What a great game!
Amazing video, and a great project. Really threw me down memory lane. My personal favorites not in this list: Head over heels, Mail ordered monsters, Alcazar. Great video! Thanks!
Cheers thx , yeah Mail order Monsters just missed the cut & cool game
Great effort. Without a C64 on hand, this list allows people to remember what they used to have in their games bundles.
Cheers , thanks for watching
Looking forward to every minute. Nice one.
Cheers thx 🕹️👍
Great compilation! Thanks for putting this together, plenty of gems I need to hunt down here...
Always fun to discover new old games 🕹️
Wow, just finished. I'll overlook the lack of Wizball because the video was just so damn good! Or maybe it was in there and I cant remember as there was so much content. Excellent stuff as always.
Thanks for watch , much appreciated
This a fantastic video!!! I love your enthusiasm for each game, as well as your attention to the fine details and knowledge of the people involved and where the game fits in with their work as a whole. I couldn’t help but go and check a lot of these out after what you had to say about them. And sure enough, I discovered some amazing games that I hadn’t come across before. What a machine the C64 is and thank you for this video.
Cheers no probs , thx for watching
Amazing list--thank you for doing this!! Great to see my all-time C64 favorites reflected here--Ghostbusters, Pirates!, Space Rogue, and Airborne Ranger chief among them!!
Awesome much appreciated , thx for watching
This was simply amazing! Seeing all those forgotten gems again :) Thanks for reminding us about the good times :) Superb video! Watched it all over four days :)
Thanks , glad you had a bit of a nostalgia trip 🕹️👍
Some good info there , thx for sharing
Completed in one sitting! 😅👌 Thank you so much!
Omg you madman 😀👍 thx
Last Ninja was one of the first games I had for the C64 that stood out the most and to this day is still one of the best games for the system. I would play it over and over just to hear the music! LN2 as well! Thinking other mentions could be: Dragon's Lair, Dark Castle, Borrowed Time, Moon Patrol, Mr Robot, and Ninja. Awesome list!
Yeah me too played through it tons if times and nice suggestions, im hoping to expand the list in the future and those are good choices
I loved "The Adventure Construction Set"!
It's what we bought them for!"
50 Mission Crush is one I would throw in. It was basically a turn based version of Ace of Aces, where you managed a B17 bomber and its entire crew. Felt kind of like wartime Oregon Trail where you named the crew after people you know and see who survived until the end.
That's all my memories!
Thanks ,. Glad you had fun watching it and some good memories there 🕹️👍
One of the best c64-top-lists for sure, greatly appriciated, I certainly wouldn't mind the full top-500-list!
Yay!
Pretty good game 🕹️
Amazing work! You are really smashing it with your c64 videos
Thank you sir 🕹️😀😀😀
Well that's my night sorted 😁 thank you very much!
😀👍
Awesome video...its a list of sorts, but feels like a docu....
So many good games and I played most of them....love the attention to one of my favourites....Exploding Fist II
Cheers thx , people usually make these kind of list videos very poorly in my opinion by not giving each game the attention it deserves so thats why its got a bit of a docu feel to it . Cheers for watching 🕹️👍
Still working my way through this. I think you must be congratulated on the production values. Snippets and shots of the games you actually own. They microprose collections and gameplay you present is excellent. Not re-hashed crap but your own content. Helps that you have done previous docos on system 3 etc. keep it up 👍
Cheers thx , just trying to gives the games their much deserved due 🕹️
Very well done! I bought an Amiga in 87 so I missed many of these. I'll look into these again when I retire in a few years and play them on emulators :)
Cheers thank you for watching
Amazing work on this! Very thoughtful and informed selection. Project Firestart in particular is one I'd never even heard of that looks absolutely mindblowing! Excellent game-rooms too! Another lovely anniversary present for our favourite breadbox.
A few C64 game recommendations for anyone reading (sorry if any of these were mentioned!):
-Below The Root - an excellent open-world adventure taking place in a world with towns built into 7 massive trees.
SEE YOU LATER!" *wizard gives you a band-aid and dematerializes*
"SPELL: ALLIGATOR" *spells it wrong* "IT'S GETTING DAAARKER!".
Nice thanks for that , Below the Root and Blood N Guts are pretty good love em.
5 well spent, relaxing hours, filled with pure, overflowing, unadultered C64 love. Thanks a lot Bastich! 9.9 out of 10 for this one, just because it's missing my own personal favorite Cloud Kingdoms - pet peeves aside, fantastic work!!!
Nice thanks a lot , I've never played Cloud Kingdoms although i know about it , time for a dodgy Dave download 😀👍
Incredible video. Thanks ever so much for creating this as it is much appreciated.
My pleasure thank you for watching 😀👍
Finally got to the end after many sittings lol.
Fantastic list of C64 games, many memories and a brilliant look back to the best if times.
Wonderful dedication and work have gone into this again and truly top way to celebrate 40 years of the best 8 bit computer ever.
My favourite C64 game was the stunning Wizball.
Cheers for watching the whole thing , sorry no Wizball .. i like it but not top tier for me , still a great game though .
@@BastichB64K That's the thing about personal choices and it's a good thing as we learn and find new games we wouldn't probably have come across 👍
@@dennyhaynes3 so true 👍 most people dont think that way unfortunately
About halfway through the video so far. Being introduced to a lot of titles, but I’m also surprised how many of these I had as a kid. I recall my Dad got a couple boxes worth of C64 disks from a couple guys he worked with, mostly bootleg compilations, and as a result we had probably a few hundred games. Mostly rubbish, but in that wondrous mine of floppies were numerous diamonds to be found, and as a kid I loved pouring through that mass of disks seeking those gems.
Bootleg games and the c64 are part of its charm .. i had a few boxes of them too 😆
Nice to see some more complex games like Strike Fleet get some love! Those games had more of a learning curve to get into, so many would pass them over without discovering what they have to offer.
Yeah most people dismiss these games but with a little patience the experience is well worth it
You could open a retro museum with all that enormous collection...:O
😂👍 thx
Great list, including some gems that I missed back in the days. I knew what your number one would be though, I share it ;). On my first visit to Kyoto I had to think of it - The Higashiyama area really reminded me of the game and gave me some nostalgic feelings :).
Nice 😀👍🕹️
BastichB: Should I split this documentary into 3-4 parts?
Martin Scorsese: No man, just leave it like it is.
😎
Great stuff, as always...
🤣👍 I always go with what Scorsese says 😆
Gunship by Microprose is the best C64 game of all time. Closely followed by another Microprose title, Sid Meier's Pirates! Microprose made the best games for the C64 and Gunship was the pinnacle of how far the C64 could be pushed in terms of it's limited hardware. The game itself is action packed and exiting. I still play it 36 years later.
Yeah , those are top rated games for me too 🕹️👍
Games I played:
35:48 Wizard of Wor (I unfortunately only played the Ultimax version, but it was still my favorite game on the system.)
2:12:41 Choplifter (I played this a lot but it was always frustrating to play as a five year old.)
2:38:03 Super Zaxxon
2:56:26 Forbidden Forest (super scary)
I know there were more, one was a simple driving game, and I think my mom tried to make us play some math or reading games, but these are the ones that gave me the nostalgic kick.
Yeah there are sooooo many , you played some good ones
Really really great work, thanks for this brings back a few classics I've forgotten 🤩🤩
Cheers , thanks for watching 🕹️👍
Great work! Five hours of nostalgia. Finally I miss some of my favorites. I loved oil Imperium and Fugger (one of the first economic simulation games). Hexenküche 1 and 2 and Of course Night mission. The best pinball simulation on the bread box
Thank you For your work
Cheers thanks for watching if the list was longer some of those would have made it 👍
amazing video!
My brother used to come into the room and say "Hey..." and when I looked up he'd say "...taxi!" Space Taxi was timeless.
😂👍 yeah simple great fun
A very impressive piece of work. You assembled and presented it very well, congratulations.
Cheers , thx for watching
