I agree with all things that you mentioned, especially about paperwork. Yes, it’s a small detail that makes us somewhat professional and that’s a good thing. But about tethered shoot, you definitely have to switch to Capture One. This particular software is simply the best for tethering. It’s fast, it’s stable, and one particular feature called ‘Capture Pilot’ it’s really simplifies photoshoot workflow beacuse your client can collaborate to select the photo in real time after camera shutter pressed. It’s really saved a lot of time, and it will make you look professional at a whole new level!
I'd really like to learn more about where to find stylists to work with and how to create a good team. I also haven't seen anything on UA-cam about taxes/finance as a freelance photographer or what needs to be set up on the back end to launch a photography business.
Also the best tip : do not charge more if you do not have all the boxes checked, even if you can. I have a natural talent for selling, but did some crazy sales at a time of my life where my mental health did not allowed me to keep up. I once managed to sell my 1K day rate to a non-profit organization, which maxed-out their budget, and while I was very pro on set, I did not deliver at all otherwise and this did hurt my reputation big time. A lot of people talk about being convincing to make the sale, but your job is not to be salesman! The salesman just have to make the sale then hand it to a specialist who will offer the service. I'm a great salesman, I'm a good photographer, but my business as a whole could not sustain this kind of sketchy "work it out as you hustle" mentality.
Just ordered my Tether Pro cable! I tried Tethering For the first time on a client shoot last weekend and it was a great experience for both me and the client. I use a short USB C to USB C and USB C extender so now I am Getting the correct cable. GREAT VIDEO!!!!!! Watching from Jamaica.
My friends say this as a joke, but it really isn't. A Matte box on your camera for a client video shoot will automatically increase your production budget 😂
Another great video of tips!! Thanks!! Workflow in lightroom from photoshoot to exports. How to keep all of your different shoots organized during and after edits and archiving etc...
Love the video :) i would suggest instead of thetering try to use a wireless transmiter like accson or any other on your camera ( i know its mosty used for video ) but i use it for photos so my client can look themselfs and photos later on, no cables, looks much nicer than an usb cable from camera to laptop :) keep killing it :D
I have the accson but only use it for Videos. How does one use it for photo tethering? I noticed it been used in this video but she didn't say anything about it
@@otegadamagic same as for video - connect it wirelessly and then its showcasing the picture on ipad or monitor- when u press play to showcase photos - it shows the photo on a full ipad screen😉👍🏻 super nice
I connect to my macbook wirelessly, i use sony remote and i have to keep it open and then you open viewer and anything you take automatically pops up. Only thing change on your settings to only keep low quality on viewer so it loads fast.
Great video!! I love the tethering tip, giving your clients a live view of what's happening! Quick question, What are your thoughts on being too "flashy" but not delivering on the product? I know some people who are gear-focused and always wanting to impress their clients with the gear they own but don't take the time to build their skills and actually deliver a quality product. It's always a fine line we walk of the perception of being "high quality'" vs actually delivering high-quality work!
Well, you always have to be able to deliver. Otherwise there's no point in being flashy. You can't outshine a bad product and no one will buy it at the end of the day
Great video! I'm interested in knowing how one should go about starting their photo business? I have a camera and so on (kind of stuck with only one lens atm but planning to invest into new ones), I know how to to edit etc, but where do I start?
The moment you've been paid any amount for photos is the moment your photo business starts. What kind of photos can you shoot with your limited equipment? What kind of photos do you want to shoot? Editing is very personal and subjective, but the trends can give you momentary appeal. Seeing as you're just at the beginning, literally doing anything involving your camera for money is the start of this business.
I'd agree with you on the tethering option... though Sony's horrible excuse for an app or wifi connectivity is a solid reason to kip this for most people and just use a wireless transmitter to a monitor instead
Needed this! Have an upcoming film project later today and taking these tips into account. Has anyone used these before and how did they affect the shoot overall?
Yes it is possible. But it also depends on the setting you choose. If you decide to move the photos to the computer through tethering then there’ll be nothing to preview on the camera. If you chose to backup to the computer through tethering and still keep copies on the card, then you’ll be able to see them in the camera. If you’re tethering to an iPad however, the images are often just a preview so you have all images on the card and you can preview them on the camera. I hope it helps ☺️
All these things happens during the job what do you do before a client books you because most of the clients just want things done right wether you come alone one 10 ppl crew
Wait a minute Lizzie this is truly an amazing video very well put together great info I feel like I’m in a love triangle with you and Chris you guys are killing it
are there people shooting for clients on a $20,000 project that aren't tethered and don't have at least an assistant, stylist, DIT, and PA? This just feels like bad advice to anyone remotely new to commercial photography. This is more like a "fake Instagram influencer"''s guide to photoshooting.... "just look cool and hire your friends". sorry if that's too harsh but I'm "not here to make you comfortable"...
Yes - there are clients that could approach a shoot without tethering. The point Lizzie is trying to make is that the optics of your shoot are important. Ask anyone who works in commercial videography, or photography. There is a game to be played when working with clients. Not every client understands how production works and why budgets are so big - but they want to see "what they paid for". Sometimes that includes monitors for playback for a better critiquing experience, it includes a P.A to do runs for coffee & last minute items. All of these are important and help justify larger budgets. It is a reality that Lizzie and I experienced when doing campaigns and shoots for massive brands. This isn't "fake instagram influencer" knowledge. Don't diminishing it to that. It is rooted in experience while running a very successful marketing and production company. Thanks for watching Lizzie's video.
I’m also an experienced video producer - if you were someone who knows my content you’d know that. Optics is a lesson I learned early in my career from an executive producer I worked for. Xoxo gossip girl
@@thechrishau I'm a small one person "studio", and optics are everything I detest about the current state of production. You have a focus puller, director, DP, 2 PA's for a 4 foot dolly shot on a platform dolly because it "looks cool", but you could get the same shot faster, more efficiently , and for far less cost with one skilled operator with a ronin. I advocate for quality over optics, and look to educate my clients of the same. Videos like this undermine that concept with little to no justification of a bloated production other than "it looks cool". It would be different if you said "these things are important because they make a better quality video", but what you did say was "these things are important because they make your production look cool", and looking cool is great for youtubers and instagramers, but for those of us hustling to pack in as much work as possible while still doing great, none backflipping off cliffs in Bali, work, these sort of ideas are counterproductive.

Awesome tips! Very helpful👍
I need a video on how to land clients😂it’s really hard nowadays
I feel your pain! 😅
90% of photography is constantly emailing/calling people
FRRRRR. I charge pro rates, it's too expensive (even when it's going on posters and walls), I charge student rates, I get ghosted.
Photography is super saturated which is one of the reasons why it's hard to land clients
I absolutely LOVE your invoice template! It’s so simple and clean! What software did you use/ website/ subscription are you using?
So helpful Lizzie
