Love your ‘bendy’ stem hack!! I love that you share your authentic self. I think you’re adorable as well as smart. Your attention to detail I’m sure makes you an awesome Hygenist. That attention to detail has given you an amazing plant collection and we’re all so lucky to have you sharing it with us.
Thank you so much! 🥹 I think some of the skills of my profession does carry over a little bit, like my nerdy need for research lol 😂 I hope the bendy trick works for you! I’m always learning new things as I go too, and I’ll try my best to share what I learn with everyone ☺️
You’ve quickly become one of my favorite plant tubers because your content is informative and you are adorable. I really look forward to seeing more from you. I had to retire early due to an injury a couple of years ago after working in optometry for 30 years and I completely understand your feeling of exhaustion at the end of the day. Yes optometry is medical but there is also a retail component that forces offices to be super efficient in order to keep each visit as profitable as possible all while taking care of each patient’s medical needs. I would be drained at the end of each day.
Thank you so much for the kind comment, and your empathy as well! It sounds like you’ve had a long and rich career. I’m sorry your injury forced you to retire but hopefully retirement is treating you well! I appreciate that you understand the balancing act that we have to do as a member of a privately funded sector of healthcare. We want to take care of our patients but there’s always the business aspect of it too, and it can definitely be draining at the end of a long and physically demanding day. But I just try my best to count my blessings and I really enjoy making connections with my patients, so hopefully I still have a long career ahead of me! 😆
I think that you are very talented and accomplished managing two jobs. On top of it you take care of your house, husband, plants and pets responsibly. I admire young people like you that knows how to make their own choices and commit to them for life.
I watched 3 of your videos in a row and really like your style and content. I was positively surprised when you started sharing your job and personal feelings. I was glad to find out someone else also ‘chose’ to work 3 days a week. I work in Finance in a stressful environment. I decided to switch to part-time working over a year ago. I have not been criticised by anyone for it but I feel guilty sometimes when I think about how other people cope with full-time work, or I feel conscious about telling people I chose to only work 3 days a week because I don’t want people to think I’m a ‘lightweight’. I agree with what you said, there is more to life than working all the time. I can cope with 5-days work but will just be less happy. Not sure why I started rambling on here. Guess I should just say you have done a good job wiith you tube videos😊
Thank you for watching and I don't mind you rambling, I feel the same way so it's nice to know someone else out there agrees! I had a bit of guilt as well, not wanting people to think I'm a lightweight. But at the end of the day I think I am just thankful that I have the opportunity right now to be able to cut back on my hours a bit! So I will enjoy it while I can 🥰 I hope you are enjoying your increased free time! 😁
Love your videos. OMG your plants are so beautiful, the leaves are so healthy and big. You're so inspiring and relaxing to watch. Keep your videos coming.
My dental hygienist is also my therapist. We go deep. 😂😂😂😂 you remind me of her. Great to here what your day job is. And love your channel and plant style! ❤❤❤❤
Lovely video as always❤️🥰 I think its always hard when you compare yourself to how much others work when you think work is draining. I try to remind myself that just because others work more or maybe in a more stressful invironments, doesnt mean they dont struggle. And maybe they dont have the funds to work less or the cognitive capacity to reflect on that its their work draining them. I think its good to take care of yourself whenever you can and I would just be super happy that you are in a position to work parttime and dont let others pull you down!❤️🤗 They are probably in a bad place and need to compare themselves to others to make them feel better and feel justified. I hope youre having a great weekend and am looking forward to your next Video!!🥰🥳
Definitely! I am so thankful that I am now in a place where I can take it easy for a while and work part time. I worked 5-6 day weeks because I had to as well, not really because I want to, but such is life I guess! For now I am counting my blessings and enjoying it while I can. I just don’t think it’s very fair to compare apples to oranges, because we’re all specialists in our own fields and nobody will know the struggles that a person is facing. So what may be easy for someone might be difficult for another, too. I guess what I’m trying to say is everyone’s experience is valid, so I don’t see the need for comparison 😅 and I think I was just a bit testy when someone said that to me and I was already grumpy from a long and difficult stretch at work! 😅 anyway thank you for watching, I really appreciate it, and I appreciate your feedback as well!
I know you probably switched completely to the grow thiccly poles but I still make the d-shaped ones from your reels. I am so grateful you shared that tutorial and all your hacks to make plant parenthood that much easier 🙏
Hehehehe I discovered it by accident when my verrucosum was growing against the ceiling of my greenhouse! It bent itself then I had a lightbulb 💡 moment and realized I could actually train it that way too!
I just love your videos 😍 I have recently started working three days a week too. I'm a relief teacher (substitute) and I give 100 % each and every time. I never know what class I'll get, what year level is allocated to me or what subjects I'll teach until the last minute. It is full on, busy, ever changing and I rarely have a lesson off or get to eat my lunch properly 😅 But I love what I do and realised pretty quickly that, if I'm going to give the best of myself to others, I had better fill my other days with things that fill my heart 🩷🌿🩷
We looove long videos hun so keep them coming wao im a home bound tipe too u problally my daugther age im 45 a lot of people say i look like im in my mid 30 i work as developmental specialist and per diem i do nursing assistant and i have a non verbal autistic son so on my day off i like to stay home and enjoy quality time with my son and my plants ☺️
you have a lot on your plate! I'm glad you're enjoying my videos and that they bring a little bit of peace to your day 🥰 Plants are so good for mental health, too!
I relate a lot to what you shared about your work-life balance and stress. And people "competing" over who's the most stressed and tired lol. Your life and health come before any job, always! Plant care can be such a calm space to relax especially when you have a stressful work situation, it's almost like meditation to go around and check on your plants at the end of the day or in the weekend. 💚 I'm curious, do you have a routine for checking for and preventing pests, and/or any good ways to get rid of it in a collection? I would be interested to hear about that if you bring it up in a video at some point. Currently struggling with thrips that have spread everywhere in my collection that just keep coming back. 🥲
Thanks! I am very new to youtube and perhaps the hobby in general (I only started seriously collecting plants in 2020 - I'm a COVID plant parent haha) but not new to instagram, and I used to share most of my plant care routine over there! Hehe I am always still learning though, and I'm really enjoying having a new platform to share what I have learned with others 😆 I am glad you enjoyed this video!
Hi! I jus found your channel and I’m hygienist too! I live in the US and completely get and agree with everything you said..It’s very similar here having to worry about production and the patient’s care and time. I now work as a temp which I love because I’m not responsible for anything but caring for the patient and I can make my own schedule. But I agree it can be very demanding but also very rewarding.
I considered temping as well and tbh I was leaning towards that becoming my first option, but then I kinda just fell into this 3-day position as well, which has been great so far! I just need time to get back into the swing of things again. I'm glad someone who has the same job as me can totally relate though!! Sometimes it makes me feel bad when I vent about my job but all people think is that I sit around all day and scrape teeth - it's so much more than that! 😅 But I really enjoy seeing and getting to know my patients at least
@@HerPlantStories seriously! And I do miss seeing the same patients over time especially gingivitis/perio cases. but it’s tough wrestling peoples tongue and their suddenly stiff necks while still trynna make them comfortable AND do a good job WITHOUT “hurting” them all at the same time😂 no matter how great your loupes and chair are. But even with that I really do love it and so happy I got into. It’s nice to hear you love your office because it can be hard to find a great one.
Yes, it's a good way to save space on your poles and to encourage a more full and bushy looking plant! It won't work for all plants though, but the vining ones would be good ones to practice with!
Hi love your channel ❤ I’m a plant newbie that’s learning so much from your channel. Love your collection! What brand moss do you use for the moss pole? Is the moss pole for aerial roots to climb? And what is the ratio of for your soil? Soil, perlite etc? And the brands for soil and perlite as well. Just want to know and learn since all your plants are so healthy!
Thank you! I use Willgro (cheaper brand) for moss poles. I use Besgrow (nicer, cleaner brand) for propagations. I eyeball my soil mixes, I don't have a recipe and I don't have a preferred brand for the ingredients either 😅 I do inoculate with mycorrhizae from Grow Thiccly, and I use Dyna Gro foliage pro fertilizer at half strength. Hope this helps!
I finally have more time to come back and watch more of your videos and I’m stoked! It’s so nice seeing you on UA-cam as well as IG I feel like your personality really shines in this longer format 🥰🥰 1) your little petiole hooks look exactly like Christmas ornament hooks! I’m totally gonna use some extras I have for this trick! 2) people in North America are oddly proud of working to the bone idk why it’s such a weird thing to be proud of. You’re trying to find balance between work and life and happiness and that’s TOTALLY something to be proud of! Fuck ‘em 😂
Thank you!! 🥹🥹 ah you’re right about them looking like Christmas hooks!! Good idea! 😮 and you’re right about people obsessing about working all the time but I do think for a lot of people, they don’t have much of a choice. The economy kinda sucks and everything is getting more expensive so many don’t have a choice except to work themselves ragged 😔 I just feel fortunate that I have the opportunity to ease back a bit and maintain a balance between life/work 🙂
you're welcome! Remember to do the bendy thing only while the stems are still soft and new! Once they've hardened off you won't be able to do that anymore
love your videos❤ Yeah dental work-place is hell... i feel your frustation, its a constante haggle, where some paciente think that you are stealing from them or something... but yeah its mentaly draining
Oh man I really dislike going to the dentist, but love all the staff. Haha, I always have fear that the dentist will find things I don’t want him to find lol. Oh social media folks can be super annoying, haha don’t listen to those strangers.
hahaha i totally get that! Whenever I go for my own appointments I always worry about whether or not I got a new cavity, even though I'm a hygienist myself! Haha it's a valid concern! 🤣
Very interesting moss pole hack video. I have a love-hate relationship with moss. I’ve switched to perlite prop boxes but after chemo I’m so sensitive to certain smells ( I know waa waa). Yes, I get the “haters” too! Yep, I requested cancer, folks.... The smell of freshly wet sphagnum moss makes me gag. If I leave it in a bowl in a room, leave the room and come back to the room that smell is in the room for what seems hours! Urghhh! I want to do what is best for my plants. Switched from the big box sphagnum to the Besgrow brand thinking it was my cheap moss, but no, just opened the more expensive stuff and the same thing happened. Sigh. Hurrah! You worked three days in a row! I’m proud of you! I can’t work one day in a row. It’s all relative and the 6 day woman should just get some empathy and STFU!
I'm sorry to hear that, I hope you continue to have a steady recovery! My husband hates the smell of freshly wet moss as well, so I can see how a highly sensitive sense of smell can find it really off putting! It's a good thing there are alternative methods now such as perlite, like you said. For the poles, I know some people use tree fern fiber and some people even fill their poles with the same aroid mix that's in their pot! Although that may or may not work for you depending on your growing environment, but could be worth a try? And yes, it's all relative, which is why I try not to compare my situation to someone else's and I wonder if maybe I took it the wrong way, but nonetheless her comment at the time made me feel like it invalidated my feelings, which still sucked 😅
@@HerPlantStories Thank you! Yes, you are correct, I could try filling the traditional poles or lazy poles with another media. Aroid mix (which I already have) or that tree fern fibre which I’ve been meaning to try....Continue to believe in yourself. Since cancer I’ve learned a lot about the true nature of friends and strangers. I’m a lot more self-reliant and have developed a thicker skin. Find your supporters and let the rest go....Suggestion for a video: pots with drainage holes or not and how to take care of those pots that don’t have drainage holes. Just trying PON and had one anthurium rot so far.
@@lleo9703 great advice! and thank you for the suggestion as well! I mostly pot in pots with drainage rather than not, just for peace of mind and the ability to flush out accumulated salts. But for passive hydroponics I do use a reservoir, so I can definitely talk about that! Have you tried leca instead of pon? I find leca works better for me due to the larger air pockets
Thank you! I use a couple different styles of moss poles, but if you're referring to the clear ones in this video, I didn't make them! These were gifted to me by Grow Thiccly and these are my absolute favorite moss poles. Here's the product link if you wanted to check them out!www.thiccly.com/shop/p/growpole-20-pro
Sup Bekka! One question, what if after the top chop just stick it to soil right away without removing moss at the bottom? Like let the roots actually move into the soil by itself? Or will the moss hold too much water. TIA 👍🏽!
I've done that before and I don't really know why this happens but every time I've left the moss inside the pole intact, the plant just continues to root inside the pole and doesn't spread out into the soil!! Super frustrating. So I've just been loosening the roots from the bottom most part of the pole and planting them into soil to encourage the roots to go into the soil instead of staying within the pole.
Just subscribed! Great channel!!! I just got a verrucosum on Etsy last week. It didn’t make it to well because of the heat. But I have it in a container trying to acclimate it. Any pointers for me? Yours looks beautiful! So many videos on UA-cam say it’s a difficult plant but I’m up for the challenge!!
I think you’re off to a great start!! My mistake with my first verrucosum was repotting it right after receiving it in the mail and not giving it a high humidity environment. It died soon after lol! I’ve had a few Verrucs since that have done amazingly well though! I think the key is to not shock it right after shipment, to be gentle with the roots when repotting, and to only move it to room conditions once it develops a strong and expansive enough root system to support the rate of transpiration. It’s sensitive to burning as well, so light has to be bright but pulled back a bit. Once it has settled into its space, it’s actually very easy and straightforward to grow! Good luck!
Do you buy that perlite locally? Or online? I have the HARDEST time finding perlite that is chunky like that😩 I've bought a number of bags on Amazon that say "chunky" but litteraly none of them have been what us indoor plant people would consider chunky, lol. SO annoying🤷
I buy mine locally! I believe the brand is called WIllGro, and a lot of nurseries here carry it. I know a friend who buys her perlite from Amazon though, and hers was SUPER CHUNKY lol I think the brand she bought is called Mother Earth and it comes in this MASSIVE bag but when you calculate the cost per liter it's actually cheaper!
For now, yes! The shelves face a large south facing window and for the better part of the day they get a decent amount of light. It’s not ideal though. Normally I would use supplemental lighting and I will have to once the days get shorter, but the space between the shelves don’t really allow for that without running the risk of burning foliage. I am currently brainstorming for ways to install lights at the proper distances, but I think I’ll have to get new shelves. The shelves you see currently were never meant to be my permanent setup anyway 😆
Wow! I had no idea that Canada did not provide dental care as part of their national health care program. That's really surprising and disappointing! I thought Canada was very progressive as far as health Care is concerned and good dental health is definitely part of good medical care. I know that some dental problems can exacerbate medical problems and literally ruin your health...
there are dental programs in place for lower income families and certain socioeconomic groups, but for the most part, dental care is private in Canada. A lot of people do have coverage for it through their workplaces though, although coverage can vary!
I really love your videos! I've been following you on Insta for a while and I love your content over there also. Your plant collection is really beautiful.

Hello Becca..love your videos…how do you make your moss poles?thank you.
So I've just been loosening the roots from the bottom most part of the pole and planting them into soil to encourage the roots to go into the soil instead of staying within the pole.
your verrucosum is goals :D
thanks so much! 🥰
Good luck!
너무 멋져요 원더플입니다
Thank you!
@@HerPlantStories thanks! ❤
It doesn't seem like you use any supplemental lighting. Is everything grown on au naturale?
I love your videos.. I followed your move across the country on instagram so I am excited to watch you now on youtube.
Thank you! I am excited to be here!
I really love your videos! I've been following you on Insta for a while and I love your content over there also. Your plant collection is really beautiful.
Thank you Melissa!! I'm looking forward to being able to share more in both platforms, I hope you continue to enjoy my plants as much as I do! 🥰
