This is an animated music video for the Alternian ancestors--characters in the webcomic Homestuck whose epic story is only ever relayed via exposition. This gave me plenty of leeway for creativity, but I did my best to stay as true to what we're told as possible and I hope you enjoy it!

My tablet is a Wacom Cintiq
This video is animated at a variety of framerates; it's set to 24 fps but usually the exposure of each frame is doubled--sometimes tripled for slow movements ("on 2s or 3s"). For very quick, fluid movements I would leave it on the normal exposure for 24 fps ("on 1s").

And this is part of the same story where a 13 year old kid was walking around his house wearing a stupid disguise and holding two fake arms and got into a literal fight with his dad just cause he didn't want to eat cake.
The same story in which a sentient chess piece goes on a murderous rampage and becomes nearly omnipotent just because he didn't want to wear a hat.
The same story in which the author's self-insert gets stuck into an attic by bullies and gets scared by a bear's head on the wall, escapes, gets killed by the Big Bad and comes back as a ghost to hit on a girl he made up.

At least the signless's fight wasn't for nothing. I have a feeling if not for what he and all who followed him accomplished, our main 12 trolls would never have become the friend group they were.

mutant/disabled trolls being culled as larvae and all, except for the fact the signless's followers set up a society to watch for and warn against that.

The Beta trolls were destined to be that friend group because they were the pre-scratch ancestors and are now the post-scratch descendants.
Also, the signless' chief gospel were based on memories from Kankri, which again, was a world built on the hard work of the Beta Trolls but as the Ancestors this time.

Signless' dying yet raging roar rang over and over in my head. And the thumbnail picture- It shows the contrast of Signless' eyes before and right at his execution. His eyes looks so soft and caring on the top of the pic. But at the bottom, his eyes are so full of rage and anger...
"I'm not mad at you... I'm mad at myself, because I forgive you." I believe that is what Signless said as he was literally bleeding out.

There were so many cool things I'd heard about homestuck that I decided to check it out. Got there expecting drama and dragon Bois but I got a kid holding fake arms. Was confused. Confirmed it was the same thing. Played for several hours. Spent a stupid long time on a cd about stick people peeing on each other, dying, and random pumpkins because I thought it was relevant to the plot (it was not). Considered looking up a summary but I had invested too much time in it to want spoilers. Was frustrated with the universe and confused by the game. Continued playing. Developed a liking for the characters. Still confused.
Will update this someday once I've finished more of the game.
Update: have advanced. Both more confused and less confused simulteneously. I now understand that the trolls ARE the demon lore Bois, and I mostly get the time travel stuff. Got lore on the mail person and the wierd jester beings, which seems to have a plot that I can actually understand quickly.
Just finished act 4.
Egg made slime children of his friends. 69 troll was right- time travel is really stupid.
Just finished act 5 and a little past there. A whole bucketload of stuff happened and I'm confused by most of it. Just got the pov of the aggravated troll. Met the miracle loving troll that seems to be a meme. I like the miracle guy.

Got introduced to the A6 characters. Just watched Karkat get hit with a bucket and entirely loose his mind about the prospect of troll/human sloppy makeout sessions, which was hilarious.
The romance thing with the A6 human characters is both hilarious and painfully accurate.
This is now my favorite quote haha

Dave and Karkat scribbling an "ouja board of pp" is the funniest thing I've seen in awhile haha. Usually I find having lots of romance plot painful but homestuck romance is actually good.

Ok, I know I'm a bit late to the party, but the amount of detail, emotion, lore and characterization put into this is absolutely incredible. I don't know how you pulled this off, but it absolutely wipes the floor with 99% of things I've seen on this site.

I like the interpretation of just how and why it was that Mindfang was killed by the Summoner. In-story, we only hear about it through her recounting what the cue ball told her, and of course that source is given to deceiving through omission and giving literal truths only. You wouldn't have guessed that it might be what she'd wanted.
Also I'm interested that the Signless seems to have a hint of a goatee -- tho facial hair was never a thing among the trolls. Is this another mutation? One which, like his blood color, happens to make him more human-like?

my favourite thing about this is mindfang telling the summoner to kill her and he actually does it. it’s parallel and yet opposite to the vriska & tavros scene and that’s SO fucking cool!!!!!!! exactly what the ancestor parallels are like!!!!!
Not just in this video, but in Homestuck itself, you can see all the parallels between the troll kids and their ancestors both in their thinking, their actions, and their interactions with each other. Even in the relationships that they form! It's awesome!
She controls him to do it, though. Vriska didn't control Tavros to do it, but she was telling it to him inside his mind. Which is why he kept writing the words he was hearing in his head. But ultimately, he left Vriska to bleed to death on the death bed, which allowed her to God tier.
Summoner didn't want to kill her. Notice in that scene there's a blue icon on his brow when he gives in to killing her. She mind-controlled him to do it. That's why Vriska wanted so badly for it to go the same way for her and Tavros. To end up like in the story/pretend roleplay/past life.

Coming from someone how has very quickly gotten into homestuck about a month and a half ago? I watched this and it very much helped me understand a lot of it. However, learning extra details (such as the kismesissitude between Dualscar and Mindfang and how that resulted in Dualscar’s death) has put things into context a lot… and therefore makes it hurt EVEN MORE
As someone who wants to get into homestuck, but hasn’t yet, this is extremely confusing.
But the art is fucking awesome, so it’s totally fine.

try not to think of it as a "dead fandom". it's just undergoing a transition to god-tier. Don't throw away your old cosplays either. give it a few years, and you'll have little kids to dress up in those costumes. Picture it. adorable little Daves, Jades and Karkats running around. Then you look up and you meet the gazes of parents who get the reference. They nod at you, you at them.
If you haven't already then do so immediately. I just finished it and am reading the epilogues, no regrets.
If i had to choose a favorite character in homestuck in homestuck it would be The Signless.
I guess I'm the total opposite of you then, since my favorite is the Condesce.

Homestuck ancestors anime with this as the opening:
Every season has up to 0:13, with the blood effect transitioning into each season's opening
Season 1 is the suffer arc and goes to1:07, with the zoom up going into the logo.
Season 2 is the Dualscar/Mindfang/Redglare arc (but with some handmaiden scenes) and goes from 1:07 to 1:45, with the Cueball becoming the logo.
Season 3 is the Summoner arc, and still opens with the summoner's face on the cueball, and goes until the sharp cut to black at 2:30
Season 4a is the Handmaiden's actions, with the midseason finale being her death. Season 4b is the Condense on earth and with LE, but mainly from her point of view rather than that of alpha Rose and Dave(with scenes from their POV similar to other villain related shots). It ends with her ordering the drones + red miles. That goes up to 2:43. Every season has the scroll of the Beforus trolls at the end of the credits.

I love the scene where it's just aradia and feferi ancestors because in my opinion it's where the war could continue on if feferi ancestor wins or it could end with aradia ancestor winning. Also it did anyone notice where aradia ancestor is the lowest at the hemospectrum while feferi ancestor is at the very top meaning the lowest vs the highest to see who's stronger.

No. In reality those red streaks would be his brown blood color. It's a canon fact that once a troll fully matures, streaks of their blood colors can be seen in their hair and eyes.
....so there's a definite possibility he deliberately dyed them red :D

The first acts start out slow. At the very least, watch the flashes, as they are truly amazing.

Play WV?: Rise Up, and then see if you want to read everything or not.
If you don't, then watch the flashes in this order: ^^^, Descend, Cascade, Dirk: Synchronize, Dirk: Unite, Game Over, and Collide.

She worked so hard to gather that evidence, and just like that, because of Mindfangs abilities, the easily controlled rustbloods turned on her and hanged her. It may be the highbloods fault for filling the courtroom with them, since rustbloods are the easiest to control.

Every year, I come back to this video because it truly shows the very best of what Homestuck had to offer. The depth of raw emotion portrayed in this animation is unfathomable and so, so moving. I only wish we could've gotten to see more of this because wow. Toasty, what you've done here will always be jaw-dropping.

I'm relatively new here. Entered the fandom late 2019, confused as shit. When I watched this video though, I _legitimately got the shivers._ Especially near the end, when the fighting happened. I don't exactly comprehend this, even though I'm past this point in the webcomic. This point is, this moved me to tears. I love this and will never stop watching it.
I have still yet to finish since I only really read just a little bit of the ugh I do plan on finishing it.
TLDR: the main 12 trolls (Karkat and his friends) grow up in a world after the events of this video take place. The Condesce (Pink fish lady w/ trident) ordered all adult trolls off the planet in order to prevent an uprising like this from ever happening again. The trolls in this video are historically their genetic ancestors: blue lady with sword being Vriska’s ancestor, clown murderer being Gamzee’s ancestor, etc). Now (Minor spoilers ahead): the trolls shown in the intro and outro are those same trolls from a pre- scratch timeline. They all entered the game way before the humans and even Karkat’s trolls did, before Alternia even existed. They grew up on a world called Beforus, which was a lot less violent than Alternia. However, they failed. They couldn’t kill the Black King before time ran out in game, so they performed a Scratch- which allowed them to in essence “reset” their own universe to try and garner a better chance at winning by creating a more hostile environment that would evolve tougher trolls. Thus, Alternia was created, in all its fucked up glory. But when they did this, they swapped places with their own ancestors, which became the main 12 trolls in the scratched universe. I.E. Kankri is the same troll as the Signless, while Karkat is the same troll as Kankri’s unnamed ancestor. This is also shown with the Humans, as Jake becomes Jade’s grandpa and Jade becomes Jake’s grandma. This is possible because of paradox clones and a bunch of fucked up timeline shenanigans, but it’s why the video has such a weight to it- even though all these different trolls seem like distinct entities, they’re all basically reincarnations of the same person- or same idea. It’s fucking awesome.

The feels got to me then, somehow i understood what was going on, but at the same time i didnt. I come back to watch this and i keep replaying it and sobbing. @@neriZsIemoH It's never too late to get into the series, if you ask me! I didn't start reading the comic until After Newgrounds Got a Bigger Server, and feel like I was missing out then. Now, the way I see it, the "full homestuck experience" really only applies to the handful of people who were around for Problem Sleuth. I've been an off-and-on fan since, came back once after the gigapause and once after its conclusion. This is currently my fourth time as a returning fan to the same work (that alone says something), and really the most "involved" i've been in the fandom (which doesn't amount to more than a few YT likes and comments) outside of some tumblr reblogs and a few poems i wrote back in the day.
But anyway, new fans are awesome and great art is timeless! (still waiting to see if mspa withstands the test of time but it's held up surprisingly well so far)

The thing about Homestuck is that a lot of people go into it thinking it's a comic, as in pictures with words, but they need to go into thinking of it more as a book with pictures (sometimes moving ones and even the occasional long flash/game interaction, though even then there's a lot of reading). I find it to be amazing but only if you go into it with this mindset. There are many words, and you need a bit of patience. Once you understand that, Homestuck is pretty easy to fall in love with. Also with the mindset that everything makes sense in time. Many people also go into it and think this is some random stupid kiddy stuff and drop it, but it's a lot more complex than you think. Of course there's some actual random stuff here and there, but everything is so well thought out and I can't even begin to understand how Hussie thought most of this stuff through. Have in mind that you definitely don't need to understand every little complex thing to enjoy it either. If you're ok with lengthy stuff, I recommend that you just go with the motions and have fun (unless you just don't like the genre itself which makes compete sense) ^_^
You're 100% right, though myself hadn't read the full 7000 (I've heard) pages yet, i've heard a rather large amount of information on a large amount of characters in the comic\book like\animation. Though, I do plan on finishing reading however many pages there are next compared to where i'm at. I Think it'll be worth it! You prove a highly inspiring reason to want to read it! Homestuck can be childish at some rare like points, but then i've heard rather deep aswell. I'd rate it 12 or 13+. Homestuck is a highly loveable thing! It's one of the rare things i'd actually admit to loving in my life!

Man when i was first introduced into this fandom it was because I had seen this animation & I had loved it so much! So I of course HAD to know what it was from! Now that I know everything i will every know about Homestuck & I know what it is I will time to time come to this animation. This animation is so strong and breath taking it should make even the simplest fan of Homestuck proud to be in the fandom knowing that there was another person who likes Homestuck too that took the dedication to create this! And not only is it WONDERFULL. But it is also something many can use to explain the greatness of Homestuck to someone who is just beginning in the fandom! Funny how I just tried to "play" Homestuck less than an hour ago then suddenly something homestuck-related pops up in my recommended tabs for the first time... weird... Nonetheless, I can't imagine how THIS could be related to Homestuck (and I only know this after reading comments)! I haven't even got that damn weird kid to leave his house or have a proper conversation with his dad yet (if he's ever gonna have one after beating him with a hammer over cake). How many "chapters" do I have to suffer through before I get to THIS?! And how does the inventory thing the kid is messing with relate to this story? Or does it at all? Fuck, I guess I'm gonna waste another hour clicking through pages again... at least...
Haha yeah I tried to "play" it at first too...took me two tries to learn it's just *set up* like a game and you only have to click through it, and three tries to actually get into it. Very VERY reluctantly.
This video actually isn't an accurate representation of much of the Homestuck canon--it's more a re-telling of an alien legend we only hear about in passing. BUT Homestuck does have walk-around game segments like Openbound and animated segments like Cascade, which is breathtakingly epic and gorgeous. So worth it!
But for the first few acts, it's best to just consider it a comedy/game parody about four friends learning to play a game. I was impatient for the epic content and it made me feel like I was really slogging through the whole thing, which sucks. The inventory thing is partly a parody thing, partly an exposition thing. I didn't get it either. >.>
Here's the non-spoilery wikipedia summary: "Thirteen-year-old John Egbert receives a beta copy of a computer game called Sburb. Installing and running the game triggers a meteor shower to fall on his house in real life, which he survives only by being transported to a planet in another dimension. As John's friends join the game with him, they learn that they have unwittingly triggered the destruction of Earth, and that it is their duty to play the game to create a new universe."
And it goes from there. Don't forget to read the pesterlogs 'cause that's where the dialogue is, and I promise all the intermissions are relevant!
Shit gets weird and serious at the end of Act 1 i think, but you have to not skip anything or you wont understand what you skipped because everything affects the "future" and everything is explained gradually as more events occurs (so you dont have to look up for what you dont understand, just keep reading and pay atention to the silly things). Every long and boring conversation and intermission that you might want to skip is where the actual substance of the story and characters is hiding, but its just a comic, if you dont like to read books or other long stories, you might not enjoy this one.
Honestly, I think its best to read through those first few chapters with only a bit of an idea of what is to come; the idea that 'something' is going to happen. I only had the vaguest idea of what the trolls were and no idea about anything else. So I'd say that thats enough for a reader to know that not all is as it seems.
Act 1 definitely starts out as a drag, but there's a couple key points that give it some momentum later, particularly when Sburb is loaded and John looks through the telescope, not to get too specific.
After that for Acts 2 & 3 the story's rate get much better, with the main drive being the introduction of John's three friends, and the hints of future events. While I was reading I found it really fun to try and guess what attributes they would each have, usually playing on some running gag. For instance, John plays the piano in Act 1, simple enough, then Rose plays a haunting violin piece, wasting thirty seconds of time vital to saving John's life. With Dave there is an interactive DJ set, which is neat, and finally Jade plays the flute in the goofiest way possible. Also you can skip the interlude, though you might want to come back to it later.
ALl this becomes brought up toward the end of act five. PRepare yourself XD
Homestuck is the second longest work in the English language so yeah it's pretty long. I know the first few acts ard boring but it gets pretty interesting. The trolls will have conversations starting I think in act 2, they don't officially show up until Act 5 act 1 (there are intermissions and sub-acts but no sub-acts until act 5)
And if you think act 1 takes a while wait until act 6 there are so many sub acts and intermissions it is INSANE

It'd be waaaaay too graphic and nuanced. It would also probably get paused or something because of all the effort it would take
"Cartoon" doesn't necessarily mean "for children" (just look at Rick and Morty) so something being graphic and nuanced shouldn't be a problem. And honestly, you could probably make a pretty damn good movie of their story. Though a miniseries would probably give the plot a bit more room to breath and let it pace itself out better without cutting things out.
tobimisa if it would be a cartoon, it would have to be something much like one punch man in terms of animation. Not a lot of people actually know about homestuck so if it were to be a TV show there would be quite a bit of fudging and character introduction. If it were just a UA-cam thing I can guarantee there would be a hiatus.
Secondly there isn't that much information on them. It would be a safer bet to do the alpha or beta trolls

You couldn't focus on the alpha trolls without focusing on the rest of homestuck, and you couldn't focus on the beta trolls without focusing on the the ancestors. And we know even _less_ about the beta trolls than we do the ancestors.
Not to mention the ancestor story is mostly self contained. We know every story beat, we just don't know the smaller things or their personalities. What's the Signlesses favorite food? Was the Dolorsa strict? Were the Signless and Disciple a cutesy couple? We just don't know. But the actual plot has already been laid out.
That's why it'd work better as a show than say trying to put the whole of homestuck to animation. It wouldn't be a monumental task and as long as you don't make the characters assholes or mess up what we do know about them you wouldn't be at risk of stepping on any toes. Moreover there's much more creative freedom involved than there would be in a straight adaptation.
And, because the story is so self contained, they wouldn't _have_ to address the rest of the series so it wouldn't be such a clusterfuck to people who haven't seen the rest of homestuck. I imagine that's part of why Hiveswap focuses on entirely new characters rather than our main cast. It's set in the same world and has the same aspects (such as trolls existing and other such) but the rest of the lore isn't weighing it down and it doesn't need to explain it. That said there are clearly references to the rest of canon in it (such as the photos of Nana and Grandpa in the trailer alluding to the fact that the main characters in the game are related to John and Jade).
And tbh your suggestion (to focus on the other trolls) would be much much worse in that regard (which is ironic because you're the one that complained about the rest of the canon getting in the way of the story).
And honestly, focusing on the ancestors is probably the only way to actually add more to the franchise. While an adaptation of the series as a whole would be cool and all, in all likelihood they'd be cutting things out rather than adding more to it. But the ancestors haven't really been explored. They were mentioned but we haven't seen them, they aren't really characters to us. So to have them expanded upon would be really awesome. (Of course it'd also be cool as fuck if we could see the ancestors in the post-scratch universe but honestly hussie is the only person who could actually expand on them considering just how little information there is about them)
And, to cap things off, this conversation wasn't even about whether or not it will or could happen but about it being cool if it did. So really you're just being a killjoy my guy.
I finally got around to watching this again and boy did i cry. This whole god dame comic was both a dumb joke and a magnificent masterpiece. This is why im proud to be in this fandom. Its got stuff for those who wanna laugh, those who wanna cry and everything inbetween.
