I wouldn't call it bachelor's ego. We were all sold the same story. Get your bachelor's degree. It's the only way. I think people need to look out for kids this age and tell them, "Wait, what do you want to get a degree in? Art history? How much do you think you're going to make when you graduate? Give them a reality check. But none of us know. I know in my case, I just did what my family told me was best. It worked out for me (degree in Mechanical Engineering and make six figures as a programmer). But for many, they've got six figures in debt and not much to show for it. I wouldn't call that "ego". I'd call that being sold a bill of goods.

I have a bachelors degree from Georgia Tech in engineering. In some ways, I am jealous of the benefits of going through trade school.
Working with your hands is often a good way to get out of your head. It can often allow a better worklife balance. The pay seems just as good. And schooling seems more hands-on and more useful.
Often, there are PhD’s in engineering that don’t break $80-85k/yr.

By 40 I had been an electrician fresh out of school. The pay is great but the body will wear down. I opted out and became and industrial electrician at building fatalities. Basically trouble shooting and some repairs. Much easier on the body and the pay is the same. One place not hoping to one job to another. At the same time you learn how robots work, PLC, pneumatic systems, hydraulic, conveyor, welding, fabricating, all sorts of sensors, motors, and pumps. All the things we ran wires to now I get to work on them and understand how they work. More money as you get more experience on how industrial equipment work. V give this path a try when you want a change.
