Great choice of words mae.🏴🎸

In AIC’s darkness MANY of us find our light… greatest grunge band ever!
Some are just grateful to be able to share the darkness with someone.
Yes! Tied with Nirvana for me though!
@@erikastoncius6560 tied with Soundgarden for me
Alice In Chains do not like to be considered GRUNGE. They like to be considered METAL. Even Jerry Cantrell himself will admit that. I see them as ALTERNATIVE METAL.
@@dustinleonsky4513 I consider myself to be a lion yet others can say I have no mane. 🤷🏼 They ARE “grunge” to most regardless whether they identify as metal or classical or even folk. Go tell it on the mountains brother!
So refreshing. Real musicians playing REALLY GOOD music. WHAT A CONCEPT!!!🤷♂️
FUCKING AMAZING EVERY TIME. I can’t stop playing it when I start……
I was 14 when this album came out. My brother was the one who brought the music home. He would play random songs from AiC, STP, Pearl Jam, NIN all day long. I would sleep with this music playing during the day, and it would find its way into my dreams.
I'm now 2 months away from 38, my brother served 12 years in the Air Force and passed away in 2014, mother died of a broken heart 2 days after valentines day in 2017 and every time I hear music of that time, of those years, I feel that any moment, I'm going to wake up from this nightmare of a life. To my brother and mom, still alive.
They'd want you to live your best life.

The first 50 seconds of this song is just a pure nostalgic time travel through the early 90s when life was just so pure and simple.
Yooo this comment is extremely underrated
Hell yeah, good times 🤙
Killer intro on the 12 string acoustic.
Not sure about pure and simple, but definitely a microcosm. Alice in Chains is by far, in my biased opinion, the best band of the 90's.
Man...Nostalgia indeed!!!I found a vhs tape of me as a teen skateboarding at our local skatepark here in Atlanta Georgia and this song was playing in the background!!!I broke down crying of happiness and my daughter wondered why.I simply told her that "in time you will understand"...then my baby replied "ok dad"....i can't wait until she feels what nostalgia is all about!!!This song means so very much to me and to my surprise...my daughter loves it!!One happy dad over here!!!
The orchestral parts after the chorus just send this song to another level.

@@THE1BELOWANDABOVEALL Agreed on both accounts. The first time I heard the Choir sing “under the bridge downtown” in the 90s, I got chills. Classic song.
I think Jar or Flies is a perfect release in general. Very close to being my favorite project AiC ever made.

Big fan of this album!
You naked it, bro. EVERY emotion …
The fact that this whole album was all improvised within a whole week or so is so damn impressive.
It shows how strong each of them are as a unit, from cantrells guitar, seans rhythm with his drumming, and the new inez showing his talent as a bass player really shined.
Didn't know about it, but in fact it shows the state of grace they were at that point. Magnificient record.
They’re the best band ever!!
I might be in the minority here but jar of flies is my favorite album! I love that more stripped down, acoustic approach. Loved the older, heavy crunchy stuff too, don't get me wrong! but I just love jar of flies so much, and of course their MTV unplugged show...
I still respect the hell out of Jerry Cantrell for continuing on, and he is in my opinion LARGELY overlooked and underrated as a musician, a singer, and a songwriter.. I respect him for keeping on, and that new singer is very talented, breathes new life into the band.. but damn it all I wish Layne would have gotten help, got his shit together, and LIVED!! kept making music...
I didn't get into Alice in Chains until somewhat recently, as an adult. I was a kid in the early 90s. I remember something my dad said about when Kurt Cobain died. My dad was old school, not much of a rocker, more into old country like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and what not. Well when he saw nirvana's unplugged, Kurt's rendition of "in the pines" he was extremely impressed. And that's when he realized like okay this dude's legit. It's not just yelling and screaming and noise lol nirvana's unplugged made a believer out of my dad because he immediately recognized the artistry, the musicianship involved...
He said something after Kurt died about damn just imagine how much great music he COULD have kept making, had he lived. My dad thought they might have CONTINUED that unplugged stripped down approach..
Well anyhow, talking about nirvana on an Alice in Chains video! Sorry lol I said all that to say THIS though:
The way my dad felt about Kurt is kinda how I feel about Layne; I feel like if Layne had lived and they continued the band, Layne probably would have made more stuff similar to unplugged and jar of flies...
Sad what happened to both those guys, RIP kurt and layne both ✌️✌️✌️
Shut up
Best EP ever, IMO.
AIC are the Beatles of grunge. Those harmonies!
Alice in Chains is medicine for the soul ❤❤❤
Zep Queen yes
I Certainly Think So......
Agree
You just put it in a few words!!!..
the poison sometimes is the remedy.
Jerry Cantrell is a genius with his guitar parts.
Very underrated!!!.....his name is never brought up with the likes of Hendrix, Vaughn, EVH, or even Vince Gill.......it's a damn shame, because Jerry is the blood of AIC, and Layne was the heart of AIC.
He is one of the few guitar gods. His brilliance, skill and personal touch on those strings has influenced thousands and will continue to do so well after he is gone. He's an iconoclast and a genius.
Bingo! I've always loved Jerry's playing, don't care if it's not super shred virtuouso style (Vai, Satriani) bcuz I feel it and it has emotion and weight, like Stevie's playing. I also think Adam Jones from Tool is underrated, people mention him even less than Cantrell , and his riffs and rhythm playing is second to no one. He's a a technical beast in complexity, but he's not a shredder so no one talks about him
This would be the greatest opening song to any rock concert in history. Those chords are so incredibly iconic I get goosebumps 25 years later.

Nope, never.
I was born in 1982 and it used to piss me off being told by younger people born say, 1988-94 that 90s music was sh*t because it glorified depression and suicide. Not to mention the fact that by the time these kids had the brain cells to develop a taste in music rock music consisted of nu/rap metal. I'm always glad to hear someone that appreciates 90s music. The experimentation, the dissonance, unpredictable chord changes, the wah pedal abuse, songs that were strongly riff based while still retaining depth and quality. It was great and I'm still discovering lesser-known 90s hard rock bands all the time

I was 16 in 1994 when this released and what a perfect age to be musically conscious. My dad played the old motown stuff, being raised on the classics like zeppelin, Jethro tull, Nazareth, the Beatles and stones, the who and having classic rock and motown on the radio growing up, then coming into my own music consciousness with Metallica, pantera, all those 80's bands and even the great voices of people like Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson on the radio, then BAM, the grunge movement out of Seattle hits and changes my life forever. Not to mention the Golden age of hip hop and RnB with 2pac, biggie and all the rest. I fear we may never see artists of today hit that kind of vein that bands like Alice in Chains did. But I'm happy i was a part of all this greatness. And I'll always be able to go back and listen with gratitude for what a profoundly inspired zenith of musical creativity it was.

"Whatever you think about when you listen to our songs. That's what they're about" -Layne Staley
Jerry Cantrell!! 99% of the time when a rock group uses professional classical musicians for a recording (as AIC did for this song), everything has to be written out precisely for those musicians. Jerry gathered the musicians in a room with him and his acoustic guitar and played for them exactly what he wanted. And they'd work on it together. No sheet music or anything else. And the results are a testament to his ability.
That's interesting. I'm telling you. The best musicians have been self-taught and have not been able to read music. I could name some: Hendrix, Gilmour, Yorke, to name a few. Ear training is far more valuable imo.
@@ryand141 exactly. My grandfather was the same. Musically he had an eidetic memory. He played the piano as good as any clasaical pianist, could barely read sheet music and never took a formal lesson. He would listen to a song a few times and would play it brilliantly.

That voice.. it just..... I don't think anyone will ever sound like this ever again, and it makes me want to cry.
My favorite Alice in Chains song. So strong.
Fun fact: the jar of flies is a representation of an experiment that is done with two jars of flies. One jar is overfed and the other is underfed; the overfed jar reproduces at an alarming rate and then overpopulates (creating shorter lifespans) while the underfed jar survives the longest. This music video and song embody everything about that experiment and the messaging behind stay away from the overindulgence and pressures from our social environments.

Cheers for that, very interesting.
The band. The song. The music. The video. This was, and is, incredible.
I reckon this is AIC best song; It was written and performed when their creativity was blooming (Jar of Flies), Layne's voice hadn't been affected by his drug use yet so sounded amazing. Finally: IT FUCKING ROCKS
Oh and the videos awesome :P
Good comment. And profile picture
Would? Is a great song too
I might agree with you there.
His voice in River of Deceit is pretty good, too.
When the violin kicks in around 3:20 with Laynes vocal, perfection! 💙
I wasn't alive in this time period, but most of the music I listen to is from the 90's. From metal bands like Pantera, Tool, Korn, to grunge bands like Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and Soundgarden, this was the real shit!
Haha I was born in 94 but man I wish so bad I was born in the late 70s early 80s so I could have experienced the 90s as a teenager
My dude, check out Killswitch Engage (the Howard Jones era). You'll like it, trust me. I suggest that you start with the song "The End Of Heartache". Alice In Chains and Pantera are two of my favorites, too. 🤟
3:59 Damn... that raise in Layne's voice gives me shivers....
I see what you mean man. Just making it good for the end
Its amazing sound he makes I like the one he does in would
The range of their songs cannot be denied wish they could of made ten more albums.
.... They're still around.....
shadowprince101 not the same without Layne...
Annah Anguiano cause Jerry Cantrell ain't worth shit apparently, right...
shadowprince101 jerry is awesome it's just layne and jerry voice fit so perfectly together the new guy doesn't have the same emotion
shadowprince101 Jerry was always the genius behind the songs. BGWTB and TDPTDH are both awesome albums. I like that they've adapted harder metal sound. Can't wait for the new album this year!
love the lil violin parts toward the end on top of jerry and mikes riffs and laynes voice. goosebumps.
I miss the 90's best decade of my life !
From a time when the world seemed less scary and my hometown hadn't been destroyed by gang mentality and drugs. Before I knew what harsh reality was in store for me, and I flipped this on my walkman in the dark and hoped and dreamed big. Thank you AIC for making music that reminds me of who I truly am.
❤️❤️
Gives me chills and goosebumps whenever the chorus and instrumental solo with the guitar and violin come together and he says “ I stay away” it so powerful and emotional it always gets me in a certain kinda of way! Such a damn beautiful sequence in a song
Great way to put it have like #50 :)
The intro is amazing, unmistakable.

Best AIC's intro! Such a sad and nostalgic song!
What strikes me about the music from this era (I was born in ‘80) is that it was so powerful. I don’t know if anyone remembers the random amazing music that appeared, but it seemed like the industry just pumped out the most incredible, wacky and inventive stuff. And it was all raw and pure, all driven by inspiration from other artists. Hour and hours spent playing in your bedroom, using your imagination. I fear our kids and grandkids are being robbed of this. Such an amazing time to be alive, I miss it
Yea I’m young (21) and basically exclusively listen to this stuff only, the rap/pop crap that they shove down everyone’s throat is so mediocre and generic
First EP to ever top the charts. That says it all, really.
Still miss you Layne. You helped me through a lot of hard times. RIP brother.
This whole album is amazing.

In 2017, it was a bad year in my life. My grandmother passed away along with my Ferret. Both within a few days of each other. This song was in my playlist back then. It takes me back to that sad time. It isn't the song that is bad. Just the time I was listening to it. Amazing the memories it triggers.
I will be 60 next week and still, when I just want to get down and ROCK I turn up Al in Chains!! How can you not...
Linda Bond , 5 months I'll be 62 i still dig it
@@mrchildgrownold3852 i'm 60 & don't no one tell me i can't listen to my AIC, there will be some justifiable homicide, lol (i just saw your user name, cute), i been listening to AIC for a long time, ever since they hit the radio, many many moons ago, lol, yes, i am old, but love this music & refuse to listen to anything else, ROCK ON🤘🤘
I....who is also on the wrong side of 60 ...knows exactly how you feel.
I'll be 30 later this year and this is not a knock on y'all older folks but I'll be blasting their music for another 35-40 more years introducing it to another generation!👍
I’m gonna be 60 in August too. I feel the same way.
2:17 - I just _LOVE_ when the violins join in. Rock/Alternative/Grunge music meshes so well with classical instruments.
This music video is so cool, too.
Those were the days: when the "M" in "MTV" actually stood for "Music."
(ironic of me to say that after saying how cool the video is, no?)
My five month old puppy, Pugsly, just sat and WATCHED this. 😊 Good ol AIC.
My baby Alice loves this !!!
I always say aic's music had the uncanny ability of being dissonant but also very harmonically beautiful at the same time. The thing is these rwo sounds met in an ABSOLUTELY SEAMLESS way. As a musician I can tell you that isn't simple.
Now that I'm older and have lived a little, I understand this song. Addiction is no joke. It will burn down everything you worked for.
I can relate, been clean now for 18 years. Heroine and coke mix almost destroyed my life, friends, family. All's good now I'm healthy and taking care of myself and my family. Layne, Kurt, Weiland I listen to their music always, may they have peace now.
Still struggling with it but I know I'll beat it before it's too late
@@silverioperez490 Keep at it. I'm 52 living with T2 diabetes and Hep C, but I've never felt more alive.
@@DINOBRAV69 it's good to know there's always somebody out there that can relate I wish you the best, never give up
@@silverioperez490 I almost did. Three weeks ago, I was admiited to the hospital with Covid. I spent two days in ICU due to the diabetes and hep C. I was in there for a week. I felt like I was going to die. Before that, for eight days I tried to fight it on my own. My oxygen kept going down, my sugar was up, and my liver was hurting. By the grace of God, I responded well to the antibiotics and insulin but my liver enzymes stayed elevated. I survived. You know, I've gone through two sets of treatments for Hep C and it aways come back.
Started listening to AIC recently and I must admit "Jar of Flies" is my favourite album. A masterpiece!
all gd albums but jar flies on another level
Definitely agree, something very special about it
@@rusted8157 Self Titled for me…it takes some growing on you at first but it has a special place! Who am I kidding everything they released has a special place in my heart!
Give mad season a try. 👍
Yes. Such an incredible album. I've suffered the pain of addiction and my own stupidity a lot of my life. All of AiC speaks to me cause of the darkness and the depression and all that jazz.
I can't believe this song is written in a major key, it's fascinating.
In major yet so dark. i never even thought about it 😂
@@daviddaimary7734 Hah, yep me too, I just stumbled on this fact while researching how to make my compositions sound dark in major.
@@kiretoandslimglarus I never studied music (even basics) but I guess it's mostly the chorus being on chromatic? scale and the usual harmony in fourths. I forgot what you call it but in the first verse, he ends in a lower note "won't prevent safe passage here." Normally you'd expect it to follow the earlier part where it ends higher... IMO it sounds dark mostly because of the vocal delivery...
You aren't giving Jerry enough credit for those sinister mini runs and that blazing solo, without that the song isn't near the masterpiece it is

I really think this may have been AiC's finest moment.
