I was very fortunate to meet Chris before he passed, and I was lucky to talk to him for a while! He answered all the questions I wanted to know, and we talked about Soundgarden, his solo albums, Audioslave, and the recent reunion of temple of the dog. He was super kind, and signed a bunch of things for me. I also got one of his guitar pics! I brought Audioslaves self titled vinyl in to get him to sign, and he was super excited to see the vinyl. I told him how big of an inspiration he was to me, and how much his music meant to me. I was very nervous before meeting him, but as soon as I did I wasn’t nervous at all. He was just a regular down to earth laid back guy, and was so cool to me. I met him before his last concert on the Higher Truth tour. I lucked out and got a meet n greet with him before his set. The coolest part of the night for me was when he walked out on stage and looked into the audience. He saw me in row 2 on the floor, and looked at me and smiled and pointed at me. He instantly recognized me after just meeting him of course, so that was very cool and such an awesome moment in my life. Thanks For all the great memories Chris. I will cherish your music forever! What a True gentleman, and it was such an honour getting to meet my hero.

The term masterpiece is defined as the "piece" produced by an artist or craftsman that declares them a master of their "art." Thus by definition, this song cannot be called a masterpiece. An earlier song claims that honor. Regardless this song still remains my second favorite Soundgarden song.

I would say the R&R Hall of fame would be cool but its also overrated. It's all subjective time and time again and whoever votes them in are a bunch of hipsters & hipocrats. I looked again quick to confirm but here's a list of other bands that should obviously be in there too, but aren't. So again...it truly doesn't mean jack squat and SG doesn't need that validation. Foghat, Motley Crue, Ozzy, Pantera, and gotta throw in Iron Maiden & Slayer who are all not in the inconsistent hall of fame.

I cannot tell you just how hard sometimes it is to believe it. Those 25 years passed in a blink of an eye. Like going from 26 to 51 in a heartbeat. For real… Take my advice, if you're still young, don't worry about the money, the name, or wasting your time on people who don't love you back. Because, the time really does slip by incredibly fast. Yea, I know… If you told me then, I would have said, “yeah yeah, hear it all the time…” Follow your gut, don't forget your people, and when life leads you off somewhere else, remember to return home to wherever those you call family still are. Because they are aging with or without you, and you can easily lose them before ever having spent the most important years of yours and their lives. And by then it's too late. Nothing is worth that.

great ,most excellent ears my friend. not many people listen to the vocals anymore not to say he does not look even better now than he did back then because for sure he does! but I can sit in the dark and just listen to him sing and he is one of the greatest of all time and I love to hear him saying with Eddie Vedder and others but hunger strikes will always be my favorite not just because that you would never singing it with you when they were in Temple of the dog but because the vocal range , they each have complements the other just like when they have sung with the who and Neil Young and many many others! September 1996 - Freshman in high school. I hung with the older kids and smoked grass constantly. There were always a few pads where we could hang after getting stoned in the woods. I remember sitting on a couch in one of them, zoned out, watching this video. I liked it. I liked it a lot. In 96 we were introduced to most music through MTV (taking it for granted, thinking it had always been that way and it would always stay that way. Little did I know - like the VCR and video store - it just blew up like '82 and it would be dead in about six years). Soundgarden was huge in 94=95 and this was the first tune off their new album. As a burnt out teen who gave a fuck about nothing, this was cool. I was totally content with the content the mass media and pop culture were feeding me.
This song struck me. Chris Cornell's vocals reached the highest levels I'd ever heard in mainstream music. This wasn't even raw - it was polished and perfect. Ethereal. There was no identifying with it, like we did with Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley, thinking maybe, someday we could do what they did. No. This voice was just like WOW. You were to listen and dig.
Sad to hear of your passing Chris Cornell. You left behind some awesome music and it will live on. RIP brother.

I don't think he was ever diagnosed with anything, but the theme of "being a burden" was always prevalent in his lyrics. I have had some days where I felt the same, but it passes. You must reach out when you feel this way. I am lucky to have a great support network and am able to identify the onset of these feelings. I never took it seriously until one whole week it nearly drove me past whatever happens after insomnia. Deep bouts of depression should be taken seriously. Follow me into the desert
    As thirsty as you are
Crack a smile and cut your mouth
    And drown in alcohol
'Cause down below the truth is lying
    Beneath the river bed
So quench yourself and drink the water
    That flows below her head
    Oh no
    There she goes
    Out in the sunshine
The sun is mine, the sun is mine
    I shot my love today
    Would you cry for me?
    I lost my head again
    Would you lie for me?
Close your eyes and bow your head
    I need a little sympathy
'Cause fear is strong and love's for everyone
    Who isn't me
Kill your health and kill yourself
    And kill everything you love
And if you live you can fall to pieces
    And suffer with my ghost
    I shot my love today
    Would you cry for me?
    I lost my head again
    Would you lie for me?
I left her in the sand
Just a burden in my hand
    I lost my head again
    Would you cry for me?
Just a burden in my hand
Just an anchor on my heart
It's just a tumor in my head
    And I'm in the dark
So follow me into the desert
    As desperate as you are
Where the moon is glued to a picture of heaven
And all the little pigs have God
    Oh no
    There she goes
    Out in the sunshine
The sun is mine, the sun is mine
    I shot my love today
Would you cry for me, yeah?

Thanks, I didn't read the lyrics when I listened to this as a new album. I glanced at them but the good stereo was in the truck so I was usually driving.
Very creative time for music. 🏜

GPT-4 has this to say about the song, and the mental state of the writer:
This song seems to be about a person struggling with inner turmoil and possibly destructive tendencies. The lyrics suggest a combination of self-destructive actions ("Crack a smile and cut your mouth, And drown in alcohol") and a sense of isolation ("fear is strong and love's for everyone who isn't me").
The desert could symbolize a desolate and barren emotional landscape, and the invitation to "follow me into the desert" could be seen as a call for companionship in this difficult state. The line "I shot my love today" might be metaphorical, indicating the person has sabotaged or ended a significant relationship, and the repeated question "Would you cry for me?" shows a need for validation and understanding from others.
The mental state of the writer could be interpreted as being in a dark, depressive, or unstable state, with feelings of loneliness, despair, and self-loathing. The references to the sun and the moon may represent contrasting emotions or a desire for a brighter, more hopeful state of mind. Overall, the song appears to convey a deep emotional struggle and a plea for empathy and support.

@@ringpolitiet Screw GPT-4. What are YOUR thoughts my fellow human being?
Or is this GPT-4 I'm conversing with? Soon most will not be able to tell the difference.
      Think about that.
