It's one of the best albums of the decade imo. Hearts & Bones tends to get overlooked but is solid.

Notice he prosperity period has just passed. It ended in 181 and this song is released in 1985. The lyrics I would say it is superhappy. Man is born to be free. Pluto in Libra emphasises our relationship with the outside world, and one way to put a wall between us and the other is through the bubble.

I had tickets for this tour in Vancouver when he was to be in town, but my work required me to work on site at different multinational companies and I got snowed in and couldn’t make it back to Vancouver. Then a year later I was in South Africa doing the same thing, but my job was done a month before Paul did his concert in Johannesburg, and I missed it again. I finally saw Paul back in Vancouver in 2012 (I think). I love the Graceland album.

An African artist you might like is Geoffrey Oryema. He had several nice tunes: The River(full version), Lapwony, Umoja, Land of Anaka, Ye Ye Ye, Makambo, Exile and Passage at Dusk. He's deceased now but he left the world with some buried treasures. Dig them up.

Can't believe some one is actually reacting to this song. My fave Simon song. But, yes, the studio version is 10 times better. Thanks

In 1986/87 he was openly accused of exploiting African music, when he actually brought the Ladysmith Black Mambazo to the fore. They sold a lot of albums. This accusation irritated Paul a great deal, not least because he practised and performed a great co-operation/collaboration with the band. Yet in 2012 he still had a great following from it. The haters were proved wrong.

Simon has had a tremendous solo career, starting with his album Paul Simon, which featured the great hits Mother and Child Reunion, Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard and Duncan, There Goes Rhymin Simon (Loves Me Like A Rock, Kodachrome), Still Crazy After All These Years, One Trick Pony ( Late in the Evening), Hearts and Bones, an insanely underrated album, Graceland, maybe his best ever, done with African musicians and Rhythm of the Saints, mainly with South American artists. What a great songwriter, what an amazing career.

How did this guy avoid hearing any music before this point in his life? What cave or deserted island did he grow up in/ on? Was he born deaf and just recently doctors gave him his hearing?

Although I adore Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon's solo catalog is markedly more sophisticated, complex and nuanced. It's aged like fine wine, and feels less dated than S&G's folk-y stuff. Harri should react to Simon's "Obvious Child," "Quality" or the live version of "Hurricane Eye."

I think i've said this before but- unless this is a case of pateons get to pick a specific version not just a song- you should REALLY always react to studio versions before a live version of a song you've never heard. It is SO much better. He is like 20 years older here and the song is loosing a lot of its clarity and impact too imo.

When it was posted on UA-cam as “official video”, as Harri says in the beginning, I can imagine the confusion 😉

Oh no I hated the ending!!! Why stick in two measures of the grungy bridge again???
On the record (and the timeless VH1 movie) Miracles and Wonders ends on a beautiful fade of the resolution...

The album version is far better as you hear all the subtlety of the instruments. Live versions so often lose this but people seem to go for them and they lose out. This is rather muddy.

I love your channel man. I have to recommend "Graceland" the album version - it is such an amazing musical experience. This whole album is genius. What a song writer and musician. No one has a vibe like you've created, really fantastic channel. Selfishly I love that you have spent time with my 3 favorites, Pink Floyd, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and are giving Radiohead a chance (once you have a true break through moment I hope you start really feeling their amazing music - try "Weird Fishes: Live from the Basement" and/or "Reckoner: From the Basement" if you can find the time) - but just love your reactions, the Beatles stuff so great and personal. Paul Simon as a solo artist had a renaissance with his 2 albums "Graceland" and "Rhythm of the Saints" near the end of 80's early 90's...such immaculate, steady, plethora of beautiful songs. This song and "Call me Al" are both off of Graceland, but the title track, in this case best off the studio track, is just up as a historical greatness. I believe it won album and song of the year Grammys. Keep on doing your thing man!

A very intriguing and engaging song by Paul Simon, and your critique is very thoughtful and interesting as well. I really enjoy these collaborations between Simon and African and Brazilian musicians, and some featured some zydeco musicians as well. You are right, in that Paul Simon's work with Art Garfunkel is so far removed from this, which I think is part of the intrigue and fascination for me.

We were given tickets for the Graceland tour in '87 as a wedding present. A phenomenal, joyous show!
"A loose affiliation of millionaires and billionaires (and babies", which I believe he omitted). Why do I find that more ominous than hopeful or inspiring in '21? 😮
