Ya, having the bathtub/shower in the kitchen was the norm back in the day in NYC. When you weren't using the tub, the wooden cover was extra counter space.

This is an old building. Tenements back in the day did not have running water. When laws changed and landlords were required to have running water, kitchen sinks were added. Later landlords added a tub and a toilet and used the pipes already there because of the sink. It costs considerably more to move pipes and create a separate bathroom. The apartments were originally built for immigrants that did not have a lot of money. If you look, there is a toilet but no bathroom sink- only a kitchen sink. Most of those types of apartments have been fixed and reconfigured with bathrooms or the buildings were torn down but there are some that still exist. The shower was “updated” with a surround to look like a closet and tiles were removed inside the shower. One of my friends parents lives in China town in a rent stabilized apartment and the shower was in the kitchen and there was a toilet in a separate room until last year. Her parents moved here about 50 years ago. Their rent is under $1,000! Her and her sisters paid to have a bathroom built with a smaller tub, sink, and toilet so that the apartment can remain rent stabilized for their parents that still live there. They won’t leave because they still do not speak English and all their doctors, friends, etc live nearby.

The shower in the kitchen makes retro fitting sense..
Its access to water and also drainage.. Might have had no space where toilet could be installed..plus easy to do ventilation as well.

I grew up in the Village and lived on 10 Downing Street, a doorman building with sunken livingrooms . I went to St.Anthony’s School and I went to my classmates home on Sullivan Street and was shocked that there was a shared toilet on each floor and a bathtub in the kitchen. This was 1969.

Probably because they wanted to keep all the plumbing in one Central area and the drainage system in that building probably slightly elevated because there's not a lot of space between the floor and the ceiling and that's cuz it was built 100 years ago

That shower is up because of the way of the draining system I guess I couldn't bore down into Florida add pipes so they had to put the pipes above the concrete floor and that's why the shower is raised off the floor
