    Howard, I really - and I mean really - enjoyed this video. THANK YOU for your quantitative analyses , as well as for your very informative commentary, and for entirely fair methodology. Both rifles really are excellent for their intended purposes, and the RPR is superb (in honesty, I’m a bolt action guy . . . even during this era where AR’s justifiably dominate, my favorite rifle is a Ruger Gunsight Scout chambered in 5.56).
    I respectfully suggest that all marksmen and shooters, but few shooters are marksmen. You’re a marksman, I’m a shooter, however I cannot count the number of wonderfully enjoyable and solitary hours I have spent walking and plinking - with a .22LR - in Vermont, Colorado, West Virginia, North Carolina, Virginia, Alaska, and Missouri fields and woods. Precision marksmanship was NEVER attained, but “returning my mental compass to due north” always was. For me, there is nothing quite like “woods walking,” occasionally firing a round at a fence post, a pine cone or a tin can, and thus putting life’s many vagaries into perspective.

    Another great honest video from you I would love to see that Ruger Precision vs Savage Precision both bolt actions what a great comparison that would be.

    Thanks for this test. I just wish I could find that ammo more often in stores as I don't buy anything online. It can be difficult to find quality target ammo for the RPR & tricked out 10/22. That said, my plain old '70's 10/22 is minute of squirrel-head accurate.

    Thanks for putting that ammo to the test. We now have two RPRs that don’t like the black box. If anyone ever unlocks the secret to why a rimfire likes certain ammo, let me know. I think it will always be a mystery.

      I don't know if you saw my comment in the chat, but I really liked both the HV Hollow-point load and the Force. Both rifles seemed to like those loads pretty well too.

      @@hrfunk I think we have some Eley HV match red box in stock. It’s a premium high velocity loading designed for semi auto guns. I’ll grab a box to hand off to you on our next meeting.

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  6 місяців тому +2

      Thanks! I’ve noticed that both the RPR and the 10-22 like the CCI AR Tactical load. That’s a 40 grain high-velocity load. Based upon that,and the results with the Eley HVHP, I THINK they would probably like a high velocity match load too. It might also be fun to test a load like that at an extended distance to see how much (if any) accuracy degradation occurs when the bullet goes transonic.

      For most i think it comes down to barrel, but headspace, mag tuning is big deal with any .22lr.

    Nice comparison. It's hard to argue against bolt action precision. But it's also hard to argue against fun plinking with an accurate semiauto, too. Either way, the ammo quality seems consistent and that's another win. 👍👍

    My ruger precision loves the cci standard velocity. Now I do weight each round on a scale and put it in a pile with the same weight and after doing that I played with the weights to see what grouped the best at 50 yards then 100 yards . After that I found out the sweet spot weight of the cci standard velocity ammo weight that is constant then just sighted it in dial it in and now shoot 1moa to sub 1moa with the cci standard velocity. It definitely was worth the time to figure it out and weight of each round on a scale cause some are a few grains shy some are few grains over so yeah even with the high end match stuff if you place each round on a scale you will get different weights from any box of ammo

    I've seen & shot several stock 10/22's that would group like that with ammo they liked & have never really had much interest in modifying them. Nothing against it, I just got them to do what I wanted stock & I like the feel of the stock rifle. The one I own now likes Mini Mags & will consistently shoot 1/2" to 3/4" at 50 yards with a fixed 4x scope so I can't complain. That precision bolt action looks quite interesting though. Thanks for showing me what it could do.

    A simple way to get a more exact measurement is to measure from the extreme outside edge of the hole on one side to the extreme inside edge of the hole on the far side of the group. This measurement is the same as the measure from the center of the holes.
    PS: If the paper tears carefully pull the edge out to find the black ring left by the bullet and use it for the measurements. Again outside edge to the inside edge of the rings.

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  6 місяців тому

      I'm familiar with that method, but truthfully when it comes to measuring to the thousandth of an inch, I'm not certain it's any more precise.

    When you consider that the 10/22 is firing from an unlocked breech or blowback while the RPR IS a locked breech, I think the 10/22 does a credible job for what it is. Blowback 22's can be fussy about what ammo they prefer as your excellent video proves. I have a 20 year old Ruger 10/22T with that spiral hammer forged barrel, Power Custom trigger parts and a Volquartsen bedding kit installed and it made a big difference in the groups I was getting. Eley ammo did not show especially good groups but CCI Green Tag and oddly enough Federal Auto-Match did. I hear very mixed reviews on the Federal stuff but mine seems to like it.

      I recently accidentally traded into a 10 22 n really sad shape. I ordered a low cost Shaw custom bull barrel for it which I fully lapped to 1 micron, 18,000 grit JIS, did a bit of bedding to the action and lightened the trigger pull the 1.8 lbs. For whatever reason, it loves Fed. Auto Match and low cost Armscor SV. The SV is pinpoint accurate in ti but is plagued with misfires. The Auto match loves to throw a flier every once in a while but is not often. No cold bore antics. Although the accuracy is not as good as the undependable Armscor, it is very serviceable. Best group to date is .205 at 50 yds. It normally hovers just under .5 at Fifty yards. Seems it is out shooting many very high buck custom 10.22's!

    I believe Eley is involved in some way with Remington ammo.
    Back when I was on our high school rifle team the story was Eley Club Match and Target were all produced in the same batch and sorted post production into Target Club and Match parameters. If that was the case then it has to be external features like OAL weight and diameter. I suppose if you still have some leftover you can see what each type dims out at.
    I don't know if the new owners hold the standards that we saw from eley 26yrs ago. I doubt it as no company that's acquired seems to focus on maintaining quality, and I don't ever remember seeing the complaints about eley we see now. That said I was shooting bolt guns exclusively and we were using mostly donated cci ammo. My kimber 82 Govt wasn't very picky but cci SV was the most consistent. My dad's bolt gun actually prefers shorts or longs to LR

    I'd like to see the Ruger PR vs the Ruger American bolt action. Would using a vise be better for the test or the relative sizes of the groups would stay the same? That is with the vise perhaps the groups would be tighter but across ammo types you would still discover which ammo each rifle was most effective with. Thanks all the best!

    Terrific video! I have viewed many of these ammo comparison shooting videos but this was one of the best. Combining using 2 rifles with a test of each type of ammo made for a very interesting test. I just got a CZ 457 24" bolt action 22LR and have been trying to find what ammo works best with it. So far Eley Club and Eley Benchrest Precision seem to shoot the best. I have got to try the Tenex. Anyway nicely done. I use your shooting videos as my standard of excellence to gauge for my shooting. I have a ways to go! Thanks!

    Through my rimfire journey I've found that SK products work a bit better. I've personally shot 1" groups at 100 yards with a near stock Rem.597 using SK Standard Plus. Watching hundreds of videos of other channels I've seen guys fight with Eley not chambering, misfires, and groups, where they don't seem to have these issues with SK. I'd love to see this test with those platforms and SK Standard Plus and / or Rifle Match. You may be surprised by the performance. I really think the 10/22 can do much better!

    I have a 10/22 with a Volquartsen trigger shoe, hammer and springs but everything else is stock. It shoots very close to my RPR 22lr. My fully built 10/22 (trigger stock and barrel changed) it is negligible from it and the the RPR at 50 yds. Maybe it would open up at 100yds buy IMO 22lr is a 50yd rifle. I will say. CCI Mini mag 36hp and 40 sp, Aguila super extra in those grains and cheap federal auto match are my go to. I will never shoot a competition. Just bragging rights with friends. This precision ammo is something I wont use but love the video. Maybe with better ammo I would see a bigger difference.

I found flyers in most of the boxes of ammo....

      Due to differences in bullet lube, a lot of serious .22 shooters believe it’s necessary to “season” the barrel before testing a different type of ammunition.
