Absolutely not . Just like the song:-)))).If it was just the vocal line it still would be huge. Equally . If it would have been just Vinnie's track......not so sure ;-))). Hope you get the point.
To this day, Vinnie's groove on this song is one of the most deceptively complex drum parts ever recorded. Sting has always been fortunate with drummers. Copeland, Hakim, Katche, and Colaiuta.
This is not deceptively complex, it's merely odd meter. Count it out 1,2,3,4,5...practice, make sure your accented high hit notes are very contrasted with the unaccented one and that's where the feel is.
Music's like food - no need to worry about how you usually only eat hamburgers, but don't mind a little sushi now and then...just eat and enjoy all the flavours from the kitchen!
He has been one of my favorites since the first time I heard him. He's a brilliant musician, knows what the music needs and can add His touch when he wants to
Vinnie used to be a client that just turned into a buddy after a while, and I remember when he got the Sting gig... Ran into him looking at a car for his wife, at the time, and he was sharing how ecstatic he was getting that gig... Vinnie is just next level talent
Well that was easy. Or it felt easy, rather. My God what a song played effortlessly by fantastic musicians. It took me 11 years to come across this version but I thoroughly enjoyed the last 5 minutes of my life :-)
The fact that this recording is a "rough track" is astounding! But it's a blueprint of what would become the studio masterpiece puts it on par as a masterpiece of it's own. It's like a slightly looser version of what it would become. Man, do I love this era of Sting.
Just brilliant! Sting at his absolute peak, with one of the best bands he’s ever worked with - Ten Summoner’s Tales is still one of his best works (closely followed by The Soul Cages). Pop music would never be this sophisticated again.
The feel-good drum track of the decade! Kudos to Sting for permeating the airwaves with such tasteful pop music and bringing a genius like Vinnie to the masses
IMO this isn't just Sting's best song, it's very high on the list for best song ever written (in the modern era). Top 2. And the part is hard but not insurmountable. I blew a lot of minds when I played this with my band (as a drummer ) and sang it as well. And, yes, in a live setting. Probably the most challenging thing I've ever done as a performing musician.
Amazing performances all around, but you've actually got two singers here - Sting and Vinnie. One is mostly melodic, but also rhythmic - the other is mostly rhythmic but also melodic. Vinnie adds the punch and dynamics which accentuates and brings out the contrast in Stings dreamy vocals, but also leaves an incredible amount of space and openness. There's not one unnecessary note or sound here. ** Love that "ow" growl at 4:25, then the laugh and then another "ow" few seconds later. The first one almost looked it it was Vinnie (unlikely but I saw his mouth move). It's those little things that take things from great to classic.
Work of geniuses. This song hits me hard as one of the best I have ever heard in popular music culture. These chords are weird and at the same time they make sense in such a unique way. It brings me joy. A whole lot of.
The song was recorded in (5 8) time at a tempo of 184 beats per minute. For the purpose of making the odd time signature more digestible for the listener, the song utilizes rhythmic displacement in the drums by implying a duple rhythmic organization. The drum pattern spans two measures with drummer Vinnie Colaiuta playing a two bar repeating eighth note figure on the hi-hat where the accents fall on the odd numbered beats for the first measure and even numbered beats on the second measure. Colaiuta commented in a 1993 interview that he "phrased it by playing over the bar line, so the hi-hat pattern resolves every two bars". During both measures, the kick drum and snare drum land on beats one and four respectively. He also overdubbed some brush work during the middle of one of the verses so that the song would "chug a little more and differently"
I think it's best to chase their talent instead of be frightened by it. I know that if I make it big I would never want to make somebody want to quit. Don't give up on art! Every new artist is a new mind making new incredible things and another person who could be the greatest. Maybe that could be you!
@@YoushouldNOW221 Those are encouraging words everyone should take stock in. I've always said guys like Steve Vai, Vinnie here, Frank Zappa, etc. are forever on a quest chasing their own muse. We all have greatness!.... 😢some more than others. If I really want to be great at one thing I would go to school full time and have an amazing teacher. I'm happy with we what I have accomplished so far in my life.
Vinnie Colaiuta and the Tao of the beat not played... again, the greatness is not speed or loudness, just flowing with just enough of what is needed, leaving outside the song and holding a beat back.
I was introduced to this song and project whilst traveling by train through Ukraine in the early 1990s. As I hear this song now, so so many years later, I reflect back to what I saw when first listening to Sumner’s tunes. I remember the fields passing amongst the small bodies of water. And the two lovers hidden amongst the weeds who were witnessed only by us, the bored passengers passing time as life passed by. The beats of this tune correlated with the rhythmic pattern the moving train played. It was a delight to hear then, as it is now. Gorgeous song.❤
Last year when I first found this, I thought I must be the last person on earth to really be amazed by this video. But it seems I am not and I hope more and more will find this! All I have to say is anyone trying to do a cover better be thick skinned; covering perfection is a hazardous occupation.
Crazy how on this amazing Sting tune we’re all here for Vinnie haha
"....yep! So very true, indeed!"

Should like find Vinnie young to hear his sound. Thanks @restedjazz

Don't forget Carlock 🙂
Yes. Great comment.
Jajajaja 5/8 complejo, complicado?
It might also be said drummers are fortunate to get to play with Sting. Probably their best paydays. And Sting is a masterful musician and songwriter.
This is not deceptively complex, it's merely odd meter. Count it out 1,2,3,4,5...practice, make sure your accented high hit notes are very contrasted with the unaccented one and that's where the feel is.
What a truly fantastic drummer colaiuta is 🙏👍
An amazing Artist, one of the all time greats
This entire album KILLS!!! It is an absolute Masterpiece. That Band was other worldly. Aliens I tell you, Aliens!

I feel old seeing this clip so much in the last decades.
Killer band!
I once thought that I was still young enough to be a future colaiuta
Summoners Tales is a masterpiece of an album.
I've played keyboards for 30 years but I still want to be David Sancious when I grow up.
Uncle Vinnie stirring the soup. ALWAYS TASTE REALLY REALLY GOOD😊❤
What an awesome song. Vinnie is such a boss. Saw him perform with Jeff Beck and Tal Wilkinfeld at the crossroads blues festival in 07. Mind blowing
I’m sure that was an amazing concert. Was that with Jeff Beck?
Sting writes great Songs, After It calls the best musicians and they produce a masterwork...a very smart way!!!
So exactly true❤
I thought so too, until I saw the latest tour.
@@rizman1095was It so bad?
Compared to Vinnie, Manu, Omar, and Stewart? Extremely mediocre….I know, that’s an oxymoron. But I’m trying to be nice. 😊
Same as joni
This version has more interesting little licks (especially the keys) in it than the studio version that made the album.
Vinnie used to be a client that just turned into a buddy after a while, and I remember when he got the Sting gig... Ran into him looking at a car for his wife, at the time, and he was sharing how ecstatic he was getting that gig...

Love this drummer playing the melody and Sting for such a talented singer. One of my fav songs from Sting. Greetings from Indonesia. Thank you
Totally brilliant, Vinnie is just perfection!
Sting is a great melodist. Vinnie is a monster, love this!

One of my favorite solo Sting tracks. Exceptional musicians all around.
Easily one of my favorite drum tracks ever !!!!!!!!!!!
Vinnie , what a great combination with Sting
Damn, flawless playing by All
Vinnie is greatest drummer of all time
omg.. keeping this song together with so many moving parts is amazing. We all wish we could do music like this.
The holy grail of drum challenges.......not easy
You’ve obviously not heard of The Black Page.
By far, the popular song with the most original drum feels ever created. Favourite drummers song. A song to study and play beat by beat.
Vinny is clearly laying down the law of time...
And it allows the other musicians to play their parts absolutely perfect.
Cool tune written by Sting.
Sting just beams from the very beginning !!

This fits the title more than perfect. This makes Sting soo unique. Just a simple idea, 7 days, 7 bars. That's it.

These chords are weird and at the same time they make sense in such a unique way. It brings me joy. A whole lot of.
The tune has this over-arching relaxing flow on top… yet Vinnie is driving it so hard. What a great feel. It just never gets old.
Vinnie, Vinnie, so Vinnie. Bravo!
Cool. Different version than the album. At least the drums.
And live!!!!

5/4 in 184 bpm
...was going to say the same thing.
I was a little disappointed by the 5/8 time. Since the title mentions 7, I was expecting 7/8, but whatever. Still a cool tune.
Nothing to it... *eye starts twitching*
Not only can I not play it, I can not understand the description of it. But at least Lars UIlrich is still behind me.
Sting did a good job on this Vinnie track.
So many shades and nuances 😮
