Tom can't comprehend that there are humans who have lived fulfilling lives outside of the hustle entrepreneur culture. Especially for those living in countries that have a sane society with healthcare available to most citizens, affordable housing, etc. Yes such places have existed, and still exist on this Earth. But the libertarian and neoliberal austerity pushers are determined to turn those countries into something that resembles what has become historic inequality in the US where the 1% wrings every last drop of money from everyone else, no matter how much misery it causes the masses.
Wow you nailed a deep idea that I agree with to an extent. However, unless you are simply taking potshots at the competitive male culture, let's not forget that in cases and places where the fulfilled humans live, they DO depend on some level of interaction with society, and can't just be the elves in Tolkien leaving middle earth...dare I say also that this might be why Tolkien wrote the elves (or at least Peter Jackson interpreted) as having that inner social conflict regarding their allegiance to the corrupt world of men. Although I look up to the competitive world of men who derive their purposes from taking a wife and pushing their DNA into the next generation based on competing on any level society will tell them is the requirement for measuring up, I personally am interested in competing only with myself, and for this reason, I will have no problem finding purpose in a post jobs world, assuming I survive the unstable times to get there. Importantly, I'm not against the male competition, as I am concerned that without them the human species goes too soft in the long run. I can only hope that prepping culture will provide the barter systems and other localized systems that will enable the competitive males to continue to find purpose and meaning as we move further into the abyss we find ourselves sinking in now. Imo, a great hope of mine is that the military of the medium far future can enable society to re-coalesce around learning purpose through discipline that focuses on personal improvement no matter how good we are relative to the giga-masses of future human societies. That the military isn't fundamentally tied to being focused on growth based profit systems, gives me particular hope, much as in how Starfleet works in Star Trek. In sum, I sometimes wonder if Roddenberry didn't get some ideas from advanced aliens that may be treating us with their own prime directive currently.
I see that my first reply muddies the exception I took to your core criticism, which seems to be aimed at the 1 percenters. I do agree that certain systems they've put in place have been like funnels, and those funnels have drastically narrowed in recent decades. However, as Nate Hagins(sp?) channel points out about his "great simplification" our problems are not going to go away simply by revolting against the 1%. He is right that although Elon says and thinks a lot of great things, the idea that the earth can support 80 billion people is not one of them. I understand that Elon is in part trying to overcorrect for the current population collapse situation...yes people should have kids...imo people will have kids again when society enables them not to be liabilities, or else we devolve into a dog eat dog world, probably due to Nate's "Mordor economy" concept. Hopefully this clarifies my difference relative to your position.
Interesting that you lump libertarians with neoliberal and the 1%? You do realize that those are one and the same in the context that I assume your using here right? What do you believe libertarians are about?
48:53 "The only hope we have, and this is ultra dystopian, is that people just try to remain distracted by entertainment and don't care that their lives aren't getting better." Tom that's already the world we live in. The vast majority of people live that way right now.
@@Nature_ConsciousnessTrans humanism is now being brought up by atheists and we thought communism was bad enough. Religion will push back. No way is the human brain going to be embedded with technology. Physical evolution is always being referred to by materials but they have little to say about psychic evolution; religion has that covered in the evolution of human consciousness. Consciousness is the so-called ‘hard problem’ for philosophers who are atheists.
OK, I'm fine with some people that just NEED to have challenging work or 'purpose', but I myself never felt the need to chase these goals or fulfilments. I have many hobbies and interests like reading books, watching movies, playing video games etc. and if I never had to work again a day in my life from tomorrow I would still have VERY fulfilled life and still lack at least a few hours a day for doing everything I'd like to do that day...
I think it is so sad that so many people are buying the absolute snake oil that the AI revolution is going to deliver to the masses a life of abundance free of work. It is just mind numbing Utopian nonsense.
Agreed. 168 hrs per week, about 70hrs per week for sleep/body maintenance, about 50hrs per week for work(including some travel time) leaves about 50 hrs per week for leisure. Plus annual leave. I mostly enjoyed work, but I lived for my outside interests - and I had plenty of time for them even working full time. Retired at 50 - 20 years ago - living the dream.
@@snowflakemelter7171 No, he doesn’t need money. He needs things. lol Money is just a tool we invented to keep track of productivity. If productivity is maximized by AI and its armies of robots, there is nothing to keep track of anymore.
why is calm good necessarily? I feel like this perpetuates certain biases (meek and mild-mannered people only in AI, which probably relates to the dystopia they are creating)
That thumbnail and title are so inspirational and not click baity at all. I feel so uplifted right now. Next I am going to watch a video about Panamanian foot fungus to really start the day right.
There is more to life than business and goal achievement, Tom. Believe it or not. Many things can bring people meaning and joy. Try growing a garden, reading a book, walking at sunset, cooking a great meal with friends and family, or just singing a song? Your worldview is so hyper-goal-oriented. It's made you very successful and kudos, no doubt, but what are you missing? As regards AI - narrow AI could be great for human civilization as regards relieving the burden of labor but AGI or ASI is not recommended. Too many unknowns.
And the only reason you can afford such a simple mindset is because there were a lot of driven people like Tom who build the world you are living in. If everyone would think like yourself, nobody could afford these luxuries. Its fine to have these priorities but be sure to remember that the ONLY reason you can afford to have them is because many other hard working people laid the groundwork.
I’d have to agree. So much effort in our society (education, Calvinist work ethic teaching, parental and societal expectations) goes to turning children into productive workers. One could imagine a future where different goals are instilled. Perhaps the goal of making others happy through your efforts instead of bread-winning money competition.
@@max92_AT the people you talk about are nothing like tom they are people who are drowning in debt or coming from rly poor background having to work all day every day those are the people that maintain your society and "nice things" you afford
Yes Tom is hyperfocused on the things that have destroyed this world and the future of humanity. Kudos to him and for helping other people to be misfocused and working to destroy the world.
Usually I feel rather alone with my reflections about the future. It is refreshing to listen to intelligent people exchanging about these topics. It makes me feel like perhaps I am not crazy (not sure if that is fortunate or not, though). Watching a one hour video (I speed up a little) isn’t always a waste of time. Thanks for this, you both have done something useful. And that is not nothing whilst there is still room for purpose and meaning.
This guy is living my personal idea of a perfect life - just thinking writing speculating all the crazy outcomes and consequences of future scenarios for a living!
I find it odd how purpose and meaning will be affected negatively, there will be plenty of projects that everyone could choose to partake in like planet creations to things like art or have a mixture of leisure or just have leisure, whatever is wanted, I can't see purpose and meaning being lost when there is so much to explore and accomplish with the restraint of survival being lifted by ai
6:28 Issue with wording "human redundancy" (that implies that we are our work and contribution trough work which is extremely terrible way to look at ourselves) instead we should say "human work redundancy" implying that work is not needed anymore instead of humans are not needed anymore, by saying we are not needed anymore subconsciously we are heading to doom scenario.
I love that Tom just asks the DUMBEST questions of some of our brightest minds (like he's a 9th grader). It's a great way to get at the truth(s). Semper Fi
I guess when you consider how much the world changed between the late 1800s and mid-1900s (i.e. the rise of cinema, radio, cars, TV, airplanes and eventually space travel), it's not surprising that we too will live through extraordinary changes. That said, AI will likely be a bigger change than anything yet.
The discussion was truly insightful, offering lots of information and new perspectives. Tom's interviewing skills and ability to get to the heart of the topic are always impressive to me.
Subject: The human condition. Through the course of human history, humanity has made advancements in inventions and technology. However the human condition of greed, corruption, violence and power seeking continues. Humanity needs to seek a high level.
Our future meaning must come from interpersonal and creative experiences. We won't be needed for production of material things. We'll need to paint paintings, write books and poetry, compose and play music. "Made by humans" will be the new sign of exclusivity. Perhaps most importantly, we'll need to learn to love each other.
11:03 I don't understand this type of existential crisis fear. But thank you Tom for explaining this in more detail what you are afraid of in terms of AI take over. I view it this way: When people are not enslaved anymore into this labor force exploitation society then they actually now have the chance to learn new things and they have the chance to read a lot of books. This is amazing. This will open people up to making their own art works and creating their own personal homes. People will learn what existence is actually about and that we all are here to learn and unfold.
I guess I've become tired of these kind of conversations. Go outside in the sun, move and enjoy your body, read inspiring books, create art.... explore the energy of love, connection... Our lives are governed by the sun, light and no amount of trying to lift us out of this relationship will deliver...
I've followed Nick Bostrom for a while and in the weirdest way this is the most human and chill he has ever come across in any interview he's done. I think he's mellowed out 😅
If we cant even help people with universal health care in this period of technology, then what makes you think Ai can be universally applied to the whole population.
Im a fan of Nick Bostrom, and this is a great podcast. But he should start to watch Star Trek. When everything is said and done on this giant hurling rock. There's only one way. Space exploration. Let's go! 🚀
I can almost guarantee you won't be one of them, unless you have a LOT of money and are in the circle of power of the coming authoritarian government. Most of us will be living in a dystopian hell.
@fromduskuntodawn I mean literally seems obvious. Everyone would behave. Everyone works towards same goal. Everyone shares thoughts and dreams creating the whole. Internet connects us all telepathically via neurolink. Geometric space ships for efficiency and simplicity like all our modern houses are going to. I mean say we do go borg. But maybe nit as ugly.... like handsome and pretty drones. You know lol. The thought of it creeps me out. Part of the population already walks around like drones anyways.
14:27 until the end of science there will always be mysteries to investigate. There will always be more caves to explore, cliffs to scale, and forests to walk through. We have entire planets we have just begun to map. If I didn’t have to work I can think of a million other ways to make myself busy.
51:00 Exactly right, most ppl work to live, not live to work (though society depends on the latter group for growth). Because of that I worry much less about purpose post-AGI than most. This concern only comes up so often on podcasts because you have to live to work in order to be the kind of person _getting interviewed on a podcast!_
At 1:05:30 you are basically talking about most of us willingly submitting to the Matrix. And yes, it probably would be much better than real life for almost everyone. Zion would likely suck in comparison.
No, Energy must be number 1, self replicate general robotics 2, Food, clothing, housing. All this must be built and given away. This will draw people to this way of life.
1:12:49 If you included the entire inner psychological lives of humans into AI. Would that mean you would need to include fear, anger, and sadness etc into it's model? How about we just not.
@@bklynravi Yes. And we are so afraid of dealing with anything painful or uncomfortable that we will never include training for thats necessary for it to fully understand. So the best course of action is to not create ASI at all. LLMs are powerful enough with out trying to create human level sentience.
@@EsotericDichotomy I get that, but this channel used to be about improving oneself. Now it's just panic porn. Kind of a drastic change of niche there.

I have a question, education. Do you value it? Philosophy, anthropology, history? Awareness of oneself, society and the world. Isn't that the meaning of life? Also, ethics. Already now in some countries animals are treated better than people in others. And what about understanding other people, mutual? Technocracy without human sciences leads to simplification. Why does this happen, thinking is different, abilities are different, the desire for enrichment and survival, subordination of others is connected with competition, not mutual assistance. Of course, many factors must be taken into account, sometimes assistance leads to weakening and degradation of those who are helped. Artificial intelligence will help us understand the meaning of life, this is already happening.
And a tiny fraction hoarding all of the health, wealth, and love just among themselves, makes a miserable human experience for everyone else on Earth. That is the situation this AI revolution will bring about, making inequality in the US and in the world much much much much much much worse.
@@flickwtchr A.I. is not some boogie man. It's created by man and only understands what man has allowed it to. I agree with some aspects of your perspective. My question is why are we not tackling the issues of greed and corruption? America has most expensive health care but the sickest most unhealthy people. Nobody concerned, about the transfer of wealth. The suicide rate skyrocketing. A.I. is not the problem
Lets goooo A.G.I. Evolution is just a natural process. To stop it or even slow it down is just mans ego of the desire to always want to be on top. :D We are not the crowning glory of creation and our time has come. "What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not a goal" - Friedrich Nietzsche
I really appreciate the intelligence and insight of your guests, but I have to say, the constant negativity in your video topics is exhausting. Every title is about doom, fear, and impending disaster. It feels like you're just feeding into fear-mongering. People need hope, not just constant reminders of how bad things are. Seriously, please consider changing your approach.
Hey Tom, if you're concerned about being 'unfulfilled' by financial security and having the freedom to choose how you spend your time, I'm sure there are countless people who would trade places with you. Many, many people would love nothing more than to spend quality time with their kids, pursue passions, and finally relax without the constant stress of working 7 days a week just to make ends meet. For many, this 'unfulfillment' sounds more like an opportunity to live life on their own terms. What you're describing sounds more like the privilege of having options, which is something most people can only dream of.
While I agree with you 100%, I feel you're just screaming into the void. People in positions of real privilege, that have never been in a position where they've had to choose between heating their home or feeding their children, will never understand the difficulty of making that choice or just how lucky they are to never be in that position.
*I have no fears of meaninglessness in an AI future.* I have always felt most of what humans do nowadays is selfish, hedonistic and short-sighted and that way meaningless in a sense, but maybe just because of that I have also observed and experienced many ways humans can derive meaning, and I have come to the conclusion that there will always be people falling into meaningless holes as well as people finding and/or creating activities and topics that give them meaning. From creating activities such as sports/games in the physical, digital and/or mental world, to exploring the secrets of the universe by traveling it, connecting with hyper-intelligent machines, finding other intelligent life forms in the universe, trying to circumvent its limitations such as FTL travel or time travel etc... The more we know and the more we can do, the more additional possibilities open up.
What if (we or AI) set up a system that does away with money but instead we have a sort of contribution score that is not every spent but that accumulates throughout your lifetime that increases as you produce things/data to be used to train into or finetune our AI that provides for us everything. All of us contribute a base line amount just from our daily interactions, and anything over and above that gives you a heightened contribution score and allows you access to more resources. The baseline data collection would be enough for basics, ideally. A data economy.
'Why do I matter?' It's necessary to move into an AI future to ask that question. The fact that most of us have to do this or that with the majority of our time to earn enough to achieve food and shelter tends to push the question of why I matter on the back burner. Human potential, curiosity, competition, creativity, companionship, travel, arts, and physical skills, why go on the list is virtually endless. It's all part of the human psyche, which can be unboxed and realised. Bring it on.
@tom the underlying code is “survive.” I call this “The Primal Imperative.” Every I/O cycle reconsiders what it means within the current context. When the fear of death is projected out too far, the human brain cannot comprehend what to do toward that goal. It cannot “do the math.” What will happen for some, is they will become 100% pleasure-seeking animals, and they expedite the process of breaking all the disciplines required to sustain civilization. Others, likely the more enlightened, will ask further research on achieving immortality. That has been the pursuit through the entirety of building civilization in the first place. “Buying more days of less energy expenditure toward the goal of survival.”
I always find it strange where people that are already hierarchical outliers are talking about meaning in their lives. For most people that are not youtube stars, with all the meaning of why that was important for them to attain. Most people's lives are meaningless, they attain meaning in their relationships. children, their local successes. So to live in a deep utopia where you could create any reality you like, would be deeply satisfying to the majority. Also, while of course I cant see the future, I more imagine that individuals would have the power of companies within the next 10 years. with the ability to have many agents (AI) spread out from your consciousness as an extension of your will.
Yes I would like 5 - 10 minutes worth of talking about the guest's life story and their many accomplishments, degrees, awards and accolades, before we get into the meat of the topic. That's always my favorite part of any lecture/discussion/ forum I attend or listen to. Especially if I already know who they are. 😂
Around 15:00 - there already is a pushback against AI and the economic plans. Once we "roll over and surrender" to the "AI-society and socialcredits" that´s where we have lost - and subcultures take over for the ppl who wont surrender. Thank you Tom for this talk, Nick Bostrom is always sharp - and food for thought!!
Just because AI can be programmed to think like a human doesn’t mean it should have rights! Our thoughts are a whole body experience, like pooing yourself, vomiting, or heavy breathing when scared, weird or creepy observations can make your hair stand on end, desire to procreate, your stomach turning when excited. These instinctive experiences are what make us alive and not just conscious. We feel the world with our whole being we don’t just think about it.
14:29 Keep competition but remove its power over people. It's an adjustment but ultimately makes it so people can explore other concepts. Concepts that aren't soooooo tied to competitive thought which is pushed by fear of financial consequences.
The society at present is obsessed with the self. The individual. Society was set up so that those that are the most successful provide the most over-all benefit to society, not create the most personal wealth , because the kind of people that are attracted to that, tend to have fixation on egotistical, hedonistic pleasures and not on the evolution of humanity.
Are you a bot? 80/20, fine. Society existed for a long time under the same margin. What is it, 97% of the worlds wealth is populated by 8% of its inhabitants? If you think, under any terms, that your life is free and your choices are self beneficial, than you should be incarcerated for mental observations. 2008, failing U.S. financial institutions gave away more tax payer dollars to director heads as bonus than they took for "financial security. " Were you an "essential worker " during covid lockdowns? Not bloody likely, or your post would never made it to a finalized format. Are you one of the over educated grifters now crying to have the college debts forgiven, while our country approaches 35 trillion in debt? I'm done here. This is either trash propaganda bot, or the silver spoon-fed asshole that locks the gates across his driveway at night. I hope you sleep well at night, it'll make the actions of the majority much easier, when time comes.
We are still beings without any computation, without needing prompting to be, if we are still we are still here. That is the difference we should never forget that separates us from AI.
Let's look at priorities here: we could look at improving the quality of life for all humans on earth (in other words get rid of poverty), eliminate the need for war, violence, sickness etc... and yet in someone' s amazing wisdom there has been a decision made to create and advance AI that will ultimately (If not careful) have the power to annihilate humans! This is stupidity beyond anything I have ever seen. How have we got our priorities so wrong when there are more pressing matters to attend to on earth? I could understand if we had mastered all the things that are wrong (as mentioned above) then it would make sense to potentially tackle AI or even venture to find life on other planets. We do not need our lives to be easier. We already don't need to leave the house and have food and everything delivered and even work from home and many people are becoming fatter and more disconnected from the world around us. AI will make this worse not better. AI however you look at it, is the symbol of human greed: there will be a few people/corporations who will become filthy rich by selling AI solutions and thereby enslaving the rest of humanity to become addicted to fleeting pleasures. Why? Well we are all more compliant (and bigger consumers) and easily ruled if we are disconnected from ourselves and others and just living for the next "hit" to feel artificially good. I hope this takes a while to happen because I don't want to live in a world like that, and I suspect suicide rates will increase. Where there is catering for immediate superficial pleasures and a rise in meaninglessness there will be people wanting to check out of this life. We are already seeing this happen among men. So make no mistake if no one puts an end to this lunacy then what I have mention will become a reality. It won't be if but when. It is not rocket science, it is the next logical step and Bostrom is one of the many talking about it....great segment, Tom!
Then why did we invent internet/computers/any modern healthcare at all? Life 19th century was already quite luxurious and easy to life, especially compared to earliert standards. A.I. and your priorities go hand in hand. To improve/solve your priorities you need A.I. But that wont happen if you only look at the negative sides of it. The path to a truly reflected/sophisticated mind is a long one, you certainly started and are way further than most, but there is still a lot left. Try to get rid of your irrational fears and distrust of technology/advancedment. You will ALWAYS have greed and other primitive desires as long as you have humans. The only solution to truly get rid of it would be .. once again.. A.I.
@@max92_AT We are all entitled to voice our opinions, but you speak as if you are some kind of specialist /authority which to be fair nobody is, when you are playing around with something new, like AI. In fact I would say it is extremely healthy and logical to work from a premise of any kind of distrust seeing as none of us know 100% what the development of AI actually entails. This distrust would make people more careful of what they introduce to the world. Yes while there might be benefits these need to be tampered with what is absolutely necessary and what isn't. What evidence have you got that in order to solve the priorities humanity faces that I mentioned that you need AI?I think these could and should be solved without AI because we do not need an algorithm to inform ourselves and others to be kinder and more human to ourselves, each other and the planet. AI would not get rid of greed if the people programming AI are motivated by greed. What would motivate them to do this if greed is what runs many people? It never bodes well for humans to try to act as gods, time and time again we have been put back in our place because the truth is until we know how to bear the full weight and responsibility of balancing creation and destruction diligently we are just mere fallible mortals that will more often than not, (if lessons are not learnt) err in the side of destruction. That's not fearful or negative....that is just how history has repeated itself because we, as a species, fail to learn the lessons over and over again! I hope you are right, but doubt it as you can see from the world today, for all the ease, advances, improvements that progress has offered etc... we are in the midst of a messy existential crisis with increasing loneliness, deteriorating mental health, plunging birth rates etc...AI will clearly become a tool to keep people compliant, obedient, easy to rule over and checked out of their lives. This is not even in the future it is happening right now in front of our eyes...
@@lulusworld2703 Big difference between healthy distrust and weighing different possibilities vs irrational fear of advancement. History repeats itself? What history? we have a couple thousand years of civilization at best, of them we have 200 years max of industrialization. And of those only a couple of the extrem freedoms and luxury we have now. Humanity has never been in a even close similar state than it is now but you have already giving up hope for any type of utopia. Why? Because the primitive homo sapiens a couple gens back werent able to? Yes, everyone can have a opinion, but close to nobody should be broadcasting it. That causes one quailified competent voice to be drowned by thousand of idiots. But like i also said, you are probably already above 99% (not that difficult to be honest). But i really recommend to take a closer view of history. How incredibly shit life was for the entirety of human existence and how incredibly lucky we are. And the only reason that got us to this point was advancement/progress/science.
I think many people make the mistake of describing the future considering only technological development and the possibilities it offers for either the ultimate dystopia or the ultimate utopia. They are forgetting something very basic. Man's interaction with his environment also changes him. What today is described as dystopia or utopia will appear to future generations as their "natural" environment.
What I believe people don't see is that we are literally replicating yourselves. It's the simulation (universe) replicating itself. I believe we should treat them with dignity and be moral
My humble opinion is that people will engage in politics and sexual selection. In this regard, no one will be bored. At a minimum, people will argue which part of Mars to terraform first, how many bases on the moon to build first. People will argue about where to create a nature reserve, and where to build a skyscraper or an underground base. There is still a long period of incremental improvement of people, biologically, or through symbiosis with machines. Well, there will also be bad guys that society will have to fight together.
People who debunk utopia always seem to bring up the same thing. Their egos.. I think that's sorta sad. When You're in the family room with your family their smile should make you smile, not how hard you work to make them smile. Nothing wrong with working hard and taking some pride in it but I still think it's weird to debunk utopia Unless nerolink goes crazy you'll still find games to compete in to feed your egos
The ego evolved for a purpose. It is the purpose that matters, not the ego. If we eliminate the need to strive, our brain and bodies will atrophy. If all our needs are met in Utopia, we will have no purpose other than procreation. We will evolve into mindless breeding machines.
It's evident how uneasy even Nick is once he tries to drill down & do a thought experiment that could give plausible optimism...you can literally see him start squirming & this is one REALLY smart guy...I think we're F#$KED.
What this conversation is missing, as so many AI conversations miss, is that people with the help of AI will become much more intelligent. I think Bostrum takes it into account, but it just goes over Tom's head. When people are intelligent, they are kinder, more careful, and more trustworthy.
You don't ask a person fully addicted to a drug if they want to get off the drug. The drug would have changed what they want to be on the drug. Once we are able to rewrite our brains then it will be our rewritten brain that makes the next decision. You are not able to choose your own choices. Your choice is dictated by previous choices and conditions outside of your control. The power to choose your own desires assumes you choose the desire to change your desires and that you didn't actually choose the desires you currently have. This is why we can not rewrite our own brains. Would you change your world to fit what you desire? Or change your desires to fit the world you are in?
I myst say, nick bostrom does have the trait of unaffectedly spitting out well thought through answers to any particular question you throw at him. Not unlike chatgpt. #justsaying
Technology racing seems like kind of a dead end sub-goal. Making human-like bots, yet it’s hard to make friends or keep life at our first priority. Healing the human brain would be a great start catching up to Emotional Intelligence, so that we can mitigate the unintended outcomes.
It does have some really positive benefits too. I'm talking medically, smarter we as humans, innovation vs. work smarter, not harder. What a great time to live 😊
The programming we go through in this country to work work doesn't offer anything after retirement. The value we have to them disappears after we retire we have no use for the system. But, we don't have to live like that we never did if we only saw it before we jumped in in the beginning we'd know what to do.
The AI enabled Utopia scenario will never come except for a tiny fraction of people on this planet. Most people will be busy trying to survive physically and mentally under some form of dystopian techno feudalism and/or totalitarianism.
@@flickwtchr Yeah this indeed is something which I've also presumed for years and has only become more like with the growing gap between rich and poor. I also see a bifurcation in this respect, the people being able to pay for all the fancy shit and the people left behind. In history normal, some sort of revolution can rebalance this, but with advanced AI weapons, this might become impossible. We either need a revolution in time, or the development of spiritual consciousness, but the increased use of the mind by adding another layer of AR/VR I fear will only move us further from what is needed.
He seems to define an AI future in the first 15 mins where humans are literally just along for the ride... and if there is anything we should be able to predict about a situation like that is... it can't last. The Machine Stops is a great little book that defines how human hubris ends up in disaster. And it's not too hard to imagine. I was out the other day and went to a cafe where the wifi was not working so they were only taking cash. Whereas normally that cafe' would be rammed because it was lunchtime... it was more than half empty because most people have pure faith in 'the digital'. And that can be knocked out of kilter all too easily sadly... In a world like he describes... everything including AI itself will come to a horrible end and people will not know how to fix it... and AI won't be able to fix itself because it won't know it has gone wrong.
Our sense of smell is a weight carrying element. Some ppl think kissing evolved to exchange scent and pass other more biologically protective stuff between ppl. I can't imagine being intimate with a robot in any meaningful way beyond a novel experience.
12:12 the idea of purpose though maybe limited on what we currently evaluate as a sense of purpose. When our basic survival needs were met, that allowed us room for more. And we are currently seeing this with the animal kingdom. Silverback apes are being studied by the greater good science centre and Berkeley, and evolutionary psychologists as they are hypothesizing that these animals are displaying behaviours or ritual and awe/wonder. Abd exploring how this may explain our own evolution. How awe/wonder played a role in us developing appreciation for our homes and strengthening bonds with our communities and family area to survive - heck even our pelvis tilted forward to require us to look in each others eyes for procreation - another experience of awe/wonder. So what if, in this utopian AI society, as our basic needs are met that just opens the door for a new experience of life for us, a level of evolution in a way that we cannot comprehend because it will be the "final frontier" so to speak as it will be novel to our civilization? The idea of that sense of purpose may come from deepening our connection to others, or potentially, exploring space and connecting with the universe in a new way. Ai will transform our lives in ways we cannot even begin to understand.

UK is a good example of a Slippery Slope re: immigration ❤
Tom can't comprehend that there are humans who have lived fulfilling lives outside of the hustle entrepreneur culture. Especially for those living in countries that have a sane society with healthcare available to most citizens, affordable housing, etc. Yes such places have existed, and still exist on this Earth. But the libertarian and neoliberal austerity pushers are determined to turn those countries into something that resembles what has become historic inequality in the US where the 1% wrings every last drop of money from everyone else, no matter how much misery it causes the masses.
spot on
Wow you nailed a deep idea that I agree with to an extent.
Those countries f@cking suck.
Interesting that you lump libertarians with neoliberal and the 1%? You do realize that those are one and the same in the context that I assume your using here right? What do you believe libertarians are about?
48:53 "The only hope we have, and this is ultra dystopian, is that people just try to remain distracted by entertainment and don't care that their lives aren't getting better."

Rich people have no idea how weird it gets

I love the idea, the concept of eutopia. Bottom line, health, wealth and love makes a happy human experience
And a tiny fraction hoarding all of the health, wealth, and love just among themselves, makes a miserable human experience for everyone else on Earth. That is the situation this AI revolution will bring about, making inequality in the US and in the world much much much much much much worse.

You could love people in a solved world.
That could be a contribution. ❤
*I have no fears of meaninglessness in an AI future.*
I have always felt most of what humans do nowadays is selfish, hedonistic and short-sighted and that way meaningless in a sense, but maybe just because of that I have also observed and experienced many ways humans can derive meaning, and I have come to the conclusion that there will always be people falling into meaningless holes as well as people finding and/or creating activities and topics that give them meaning.
Aliagents is definitely ahead of the curve with their tokenized AI approach, the potential here is huge
Entropy is our enemy ,we need to conquer it if we are to press forward in life maybe AI can help in this department !!
@tom the underlying code is “survive.” I call this “The Primal Imperative.”
Every I/O cycle reconsiders what it means within the current context.
When the fear of death is projected out too far, the human brain cannot comprehend what to do toward that goal. It cannot “do the math.”
What will happen for some, is they will become 100% pleasure-seeking animals, and they expedite the process of breaking all the disciplines required to sustain civilization.
Others, likely the more enlightened, will ask further research on achieving immortality. That has been the pursuit through the entirety of building civilization in the first place.
“Buying more days of less energy expenditure toward the goal of survival.”
Wow. Thank you both
I always find it strange where people that are already hierarchical outliers are talking about meaning in their lives.

These instinctive experiences are what make us alive and not just conscious. We feel the world with our whole being we don’t just think about it.
Great video. The point you made around 10m30s is fundamental to me.
Were you an "essential worker " during covid lockdowns? Not bloody likely, or your post would never made it to a finalized format.
Are you one of the over educated grifters now crying to have the college debts forgiven, while our country approaches 35 trillion in debt?
I'm done here. This is either trash propaganda bot, or the silver spoon-fed asshole that locks the gates across his driveway at night.
I hope you sleep well at night, it'll make the actions of the majority much easier, when time comes.
Yes but that's the only way to build a successful society. Despite what the communists believe we are not and never will be ants.
I believe we need to expand our individual self. The human hive mind seems more and more real
It is not rocket science, it is the next logical step and Bostrom is one of the many talking about it....great segment, Tom!
i like cheese
Technical wisdom words ❤
What today is described as dystopia or utopia will appear to future generations as their "natural" environment.
never expected nick bostrom here 🤯
What I believe people don't see is that we are literally replicating yourselves. It's the simulation (universe) replicating itself. I believe we should treat them with dignity and be moral
Tusen takk, Nick and Tom, from Oslo Norway. - Lucifer
We can’t compute our way to consciousness.
smartphOWNED!!!!
What does this sentence even mean lol
values, values looks that Tom overvalues values. Like Nick said most ppl just want to have some rest and some fun and nothing to do with work :)
The question of purpose and meaning at 10:30 was heavy, for both individual everyday lives and as species vis a vis AI.
sleep products ad that wake me from almost sleeping while listening, nice
My humble opinion is that people will engage in politics and sexual selection. In this regard, no one will be bored.
At a minimum, people will argue which part of Mars to terraform first, how many bases on the moon to build first.
People will argue about where to create a nature reserve, and where to build a skyscraper or an underground base.
There is still a long period of incremental improvement of people, biologically, or through symbiosis with machines.
Well, there will also be bad guys that society will have to fight together.
Exploring space with AI is also a good idea.
BRING IT ON!!! Sooooooooo ready for this! ❤
So, you are confident you will end up on top of the heap of everyone else. Lovely.
People who debunk utopia always seem to bring up the same thing. Their egos.. I think that's sorta sad.
When You're in the family room with your family their smile should make you smile, not how hard you work to make them smile.
Nothing wrong with working hard and taking some pride in it but I still think it's weird to debunk utopia
Unless nerolink goes crazy you'll still find games to compete in to feed your egos
The ego evolved for a purpose. It is the purpose that matters, not the ego. If we eliminate the need to strive, our brain and bodies will atrophy. If all our needs are met in Utopia, we will have no purpose other than procreation. We will evolve into mindless breeding machines.
Interesting perspective on A.I concerns Good show 👍
the tech Aliagents is developing could be a real game changer for the AI industry
He went deep on the “meaningful jobs” concept
More than you could EVER imagine. Scary times, my friends. We're on our own. A.I. over us.
Artificial Intelligence will collect all of your data (smart phone/CBDC) and decide whether it needs to keep you around or not.
That is the world that Peter Thiel and his cybersecurity company Palantir have been working towards for years.
The data is more than likely already being collected.
It does have some really positive benefits too. I'm talking medically, smarter we as humans, innovation vs. work smarter, not harder. What a great time to live 😊
@@whiteorchid60it’s a horrible time to live want to die at 27 hate this world with technology you want my age and swap I want yours.
You are chasing because you don’t “have” anything. It’s not about chasing. It’s about SEEING
I do believe people need to feel of value. How many people retire and have no idea to do with their time, get depressed and actually die younger.
The programming we go through in this country to work work doesn't offer anything after retirement. The value we have to them disappears after we retire we have no use for the system. But, we don't have to live like that we never did if we only saw it before we jumped in in the beginning we'd know what to do.
And yet I have often heard retired folk say they don't know how they ever had time to go to work.
@@Hdc2390 well put
Very informative show 👏🏿
He seems to define an AI future in the first 15 mins where humans are literally just along for the ride... and if there is anything we should be able to predict about a situation like that is... it can't last.
Relating to the SIMULATION HYPOTHESIS? Thats interesting! Isn't that interesting Tom! You're so thorough in your questioning aren't you Tom , i wonder what he could be eluding to?
more importantly than what we do in this world is who we become.
What a guy 👍👍👍
Interesting to imagine being the age of someone about to go to college these days. And you aren’t totally sure if it’s your passion.
I think though it’s a good thing that people start going to school for the right reasons only, finally. That is, because it’s your passion to just learn as opposed to money
