Hopefully red doesn’t burn too bad from this, and they try again in a few years. With a red sensor, and beefed enough specs for real color and raw photo editing, this will be a very amazing niche phone for a lot of creative people. Give it time, this was there first try and it actually shipped which alone is a miracle
They failed because it's a meme to hate on 3D. Nothing more, nothing less. 3D is a huge leap in picture quality on the same level as the introduction of colour and people don't appreciate it.
I remember the LG one... And it was really stupid... That's why they didn't want to show the screen... But what surprises me the most is that none of the people the phone was showed off mentioned it... Why? Was it a different screen? Or a NDA? Anyway, this is bad... Really really bad...
I recently bought htc evo 3d used just to shoot 3d video of my son, I've uploaded a few on my channel and it's awesome. I have 7 year old video recorded with the original HTC 3d I had in 2011 and it's amazing on a real 3d TV.
I thought the pins on the back used so you can use the red phone with a red camera as a viewing device. considering how expensive red add-ons for there camera are i think that's the only way to justify this phone
So I own the Hydrogen (#1455) and all I can say is that you guys must have been reviewing a dev model or didn't update anything...or just really wanted to hate this phone. 1) 4View is better seen in 16x9...you're wasting half the phone by viewing pictures vertically and the 3D effect is more compressed. 2) The processor although 'old' has been optimized for this phone. It's super fast and snappy..I almost can't keep up with it. 3) RED literally updates the OS almost every single day right now. First the speakers were a bit dodgy, now they're perfect. The 4V was a bit off...now it's WAY better...seriously it's so much fun to look at peoples creative attempts at it on Holopics. Boot time was long...now it's short. This is all within a week. If they keep this up it's just going to get better and better. 4) The cameras aren't just for 4V. The depth of field it creates in iris mode is nuts because the two cameras are so far apart. Almost passes as a full frame camera. 5) I'm on the second day of charge with this phone after using it for video/ photos and a lot of dicking around. I'm currently at 43% charge left. The list goes on...but seriously give the phone a chance without going into it like 'ooo it crashed...terrible...0 stars'. This is a disrupter just like their cameras (which everyone hated in the beginning by saying 'who needs 4K'...now look at them). On a more personal note. Here's something that came to mind while using it. I lost my dad in June and just thinking that I could have taken a 4V photo of him when he was alive...just to have him pop out of my screen whenever I wanted to see him as lifelike as possible makes me happy. I feel like that technology alone will help people hold on to memories of their loved ones or just people they miss in general. So RED, thanks for making such a technologically exciting yet personal piece of gear.
Ian Morris Do you work for RED or something? Nobody cares about the screen why the heck is a camera company not focusing on the camera? If RED would have made an awesome camera phone that blew away the competition everyone would be happy but no they focused on the screen and a gimmick at that. And who cares about the module when it’s going to cost probably more then the phone itself. You can get a specked out IPhone XS Max for $1300.
@@SuperChi11 Think you actually are perhaps better of with an iPhone. Finally than you run around with a Samsung screen and a Samsung camera dating back from the Galaxy S7. @@a-onefs4740 Hey Marc. It's definitely an exciting phone. Consider meeting up with someone in the area to try one out before you buy it. The "RED Hydrogen One Users" group is super active on Facebook and you'll get every question you have answered on there. Jim just announced on the group: "I did say in the beginning that this isn’t an event but a long road. The latest updates are a significant improvement over where we were just 30 days ago. And the improvements keep coming. They aren’t just bug fixes, but at every turn improvements to color science and features. We are doing this for the 1st time… just like the RED ONE. In the past 12 years we have had roughly 18 color science updates. Every one better than the last. Expect the same here. Also expect the same with features. I am testing the new beta Camera App that has new frame rates and data rate options (up to 100mbps). There is RAW stills support. There is adjustable Bokeh support for 4V which softens disparity and gives a completely new (and awesome) look to 4-view files. The next month will see another round of color science. And this will continue over the life of the program. Other companies will give you an update to bug fix. We will give continuous updates to bug fix, finish things we didn’t get done by launch, improve all aspects of image capture and add features as we can unlock them. Our program is different in every way. Not just the scallops. I hope you hang in there and enjoy the ride… but certainly understand whatever you decide."

Well, yes and no. Red isnt as good of a manufacturer as they are hyped up to be. Cool stuff for slightly less money than other brands, sure but having your gear work when on set is 200x more important compared to a slightly lower rental cost or lack of gimmicky features.
I wanted to pre-order this phone, but missed out. I even volunteered to help test it (I was USAF Cyber Ops). Spoke to Red's customer service on their site and on Instagram. I really wanted it because it was different from everything else on the market. Do you think software upgrades will improve the experience? I do agree.. They weren't ready and pushed the phone back too much. I think running a Snapdragon 835 will hurt the longevity of the phone. Thanks for sharing what others were afraid to and thanks for doing an honest review on the phone. The carriers still know little to nothing about this phone and it is set to release 2 November 2018.
The RED phone is an accessory for the RED camera. I don't think it's supposed to make sense as a stand alone device. Keep in mind that RED accessories have always been expensive and that this is a RED accessory and a smartphone.
Sean Lutzke don't try to cover for it like that they marketed it as a smartphone so it gets reviewed like anyother and it's a horrible phone wit a average camera by a company who should of atleast killed it wit the camera. Still a trash device that cost $1300!

A RED employee has made the following comment: "The reviews happened on devices with Software that is equivalent to the very early Houdini Software from beginning September. We have done quite a journey since then." "We have contacted the reviewers and explained the situation. Some of them were professional enough and contacted us when they realized that they had an old software on their device. Others were looking for clicks…" The 4V did not look that great in early September (ghosting and kind of blurry looking)... It looks WAY better now, after about 3 updates, all with feedback for each, and they are still refining (new beta came out last week for Houdini. The ghosting is gone, and is way sharper now). Shame they pushed these reviews out with that early of software, so they pretty much reviewed a 'dev kit', and not a retail device.
Too use the 3D feature, go to camera app on phone, turn the phone sideways so that the volume buttons are on the bottom, touch the 2D button ,and to take a picture you must use the little button on the top of the phone , which is actually to the right of the on off, button, in this position
joshua caalim It was a dual lens 3d cam. I have a ton of videos of my kids in 3d that I can now watch in my Rift. The screen was almost identical to the 3DS.
I wonder if there will be an app to allow RED "4V" videos/photos to be shared in a 3DS compatible format? Also - how does its video/photo compare to that of a 3DS? I know the 3DS is massively low-resolution, both in cameras and screen, but how does the RED compare?
So now in 2021 when this phone is available in close to new condition around $150-200 it looks pretty good for the price. It's unusual looking and makes good resolution 3d videos, which few other smartphones can do. I believe, it'll become a highly desirable rarity in next years.

wowwwwww way to squander their brand HARDCORE. they had ONE JOB, make a red camera in a phone, and they didn't and instead made a gimicky 3D phone screen? wow, utter fail RED, why? who thought this was possibly a good idea???
Thank you so much for doing this review of the Red Hydrogen. There seemed to be a lot of hush hush over the phone and display that it seemed too good to be true to begin with. Seems like a great idea but how it was executed is just plain sketchy. Keep up the great coverage Verge!!!
Agreed! Good stuff here! Would it be possible to translate the marketing/branding lingo in the future for what it technically/scientifically actually is? So here "Autostereoscopy"?! I always feel like this helps people to follow through on their own research without being tied into a companies unique vocabulary which only "works" for their products.
Autostereoscopy (noun) - If you choke the phone hard enough, the colors get brilliant and you start seeing in 3D.
See GrasshopperPhone.
That lunchbox reference just explained it so precisely.
Nah, feels like it's half baked product or even not baked lol.

In the early days of Android there have been 3D smartphones. LG and HTC made one with a 3D Screen and 3D Camera.
They failed for a reason ^^
They failed because it's a meme to hate on 3D. Nothing more, nothing less. 3D is a huge leap in picture quality on the same level as the introduction of colour and people don't appreciate it.
I remember the LG one... And it was really stupid... That's why they didn't want to show the screen... But what surprises me the most is that none of the people the phone was showed off mentioned it... Why? Was it a different screen? Or a NDA?
Anyway, this is bad... Really really bad...
I had one lol

I recently bought htc evo 3d used just to shoot 3d video of my son, I've uploaded a few on my channel and it's awesome. I have 7 year old video recorded with the original HTC 3d I had in 2011 and it's amazing on a real 3d TV.
I thought the pins on the back used so you can use the red phone with a red camera as a viewing device. considering how expensive red add-ons for there camera are i think that's the only way to justify this phone
Dodgy Phone but Great Video !!
Dodgy - is the word. They messed it up.
Biggest disappointment if 2018?
Pixel 3 or Red Hydrogen One?
This was way worse than last year essential. Big hype. Soft delivery. Discount discount discount. Discontinued.
Pixel 3 is fine. Pixel 3 XL was the let down. As far as Red , nobody was really waiting for it. It's like an experiment.

@@jasper24601 there is always Xiaomi which will keep releasing phones with resonable prices.
It's actually a freakin awesome phone. Amazing updates. Amazing 3d holographic screen (4 view), amazing 2d photos and vid. Insane battery life. Best phone I've ever owned.
You can get a BMPCC 4k for 1300 USD. I would rather get that.
Well... eventually it will be released wide.
Lmao u mad bruh?
@@SuperChi11 Think you actually are perhaps better of with an iPhone. Finally than you run around with a Samsung screen and a Samsung camera dating back from the Galaxy S7. As Ian mentioned : who wanted / needed 4K back in the days ? Finally this is the first phone Red develops. How many models at Apple did we get from 1 to 11 now and all S models in between ? So let this RH1 develop in his ecosystem like the Red cameras did and became the best . . . in the world !
@@thatgamer1236 No one mad. Only we have each our opinion . . .
@@a-onefs4740 Hey Marc. It's definitely an exciting phone. Consider meeting up with someone in the area to try one out before you buy it. The "RED Hydrogen One Users" group is super active on Facebook and you'll get every question you have answered on there. Jim just announced on the group:
"I did say in the beginning that this isn’t an event but a long road.
Nintendo did this years ago with 3DS and these dudes spent an year messing it up ! WOW
Also, Nintendo got it right, and improved it further with the New 3DS. How could these guys get it wrong?
Probably the best phone i've ever owned! If you a film maker, this is a great tool. It's hard to drop the phone no matter how your're holding it cause of the side grips. Don't know how he is using the phone but the clarity is amazing... Now if you paid 1k for a iphone, then you'll feel stupid when you realize how it doesn't come close to standing up to this phone... You just have to know what your doing.

Well, yes and no. Red isnt as good of a manufacturer as they are hyped up to be. Cool stuff for slightly less money than other brands, sure but having your gear work when on set is 200x more important compared to a slightly lower rental cost or lack of gimmicky features.
Would this be a good phone for editing pics shot on a different camera?

A RED employee has made the following comment:
"The reviews happened on devices with Software that is equivalent to the very early Houdini Software from beginning September. We have done quite a journey since then."
"We have contacted the reviewers and explained the situation. Some of them were professional enough and contacted us when they realized that they had an old software on their device. Others were looking for clicks…"
The 4V did not look that great in early September (ghosting and kind of blurry looking)...
Shouldn't come out with a $1300 phone that isn't ready for primetime.
The HTC Evo 3d did this.. I had this phone back in 2011.. sounds like the same display?
Why did you compare photos to the Pixel 2, not 3?
to save the red phone some more shame .(not that it did anything better though, even pixel 2 was better)
Doesn't matter. Even a pocofone can run rings around this
I personally think its because the red phone has the specs of a phone from last year and is still trash
Hello. If you have a moment could you let me know please. Can the phone take images at 300 DPI ? Regards Rob

Too use the 3D feature, go to camera app on phone, turn the phone sideways so that the volume buttons are on the bottom, touch the 2D button ,and to take a picture you must use the little button on the top of the phone , which is actually to the right of the on off, button, in this position
And i forgot, you must go to the red player on your phone to view your picture
The LG Optimus 3D also did this kind of gimmick and look where it got. Can you still remember it? 😂
Yes I do , some Guy name Joshua Caalim mentioned it UA-cam video comment section. ;)
I had the HTC EVO 3D, and it worked decently.
Nickolas Smith how was the camera though? I remembered that it had a dual lens camera like the Optimus 3D and one can shoot in 3D.

Even The Verge has MKBHD's review as the next playing video!
It looks like the phone is drunk
So now in 2021 when this phone is available in close to new condition around $150-200 it looks pretty good for the price. It's unusual looking and makes good resolution 3d videos, which few other smartphones can do.
I believe, it'll become a highly desirable rarity in next years.
