- Well I’ve missed the third day of welding and steel work on the boat. Maybe I’ll get to see something one day. I’ve managed to put this together with narration showing you what happened today with the second sheet
Probably better that you were down in London or wherever than at the wharf watching it all happen.
Got a feeling that James would have been like the mother duck squawking and flapping as strangers approached the ducklings!
You are blessed to have skilled craftsmen at hand to do this work. They are really impressive.
Wow! Good old fashioned engineering skills hard at work. Vlogs such as this should be compulsory viewing for apprentices - they would see what's involved in the real world.
Thank you James for bringing this to us. I trust there will be a time capsule under one of the new plates. A DVD of vlogs to date! I write this listening to the Stones playing Gimme Shelter - just seems to fit the mood.
Best song ever
I know mate - this is fascinating stuff and suck good thinking
Sadly the real world is in reality more about discarding the old and simply building another. You have probably experienced the irritating situation with white goods when told that a new washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer due to sealed units etc is more costly to fix than to discard.
Companies don’t give a damn about environmental cost we all pay as long as they get a sale.
At least the Guys here at your Marina can weld, unlike what I have seen on another Narrowboater's Rear Deck fix and fit-out, it was bloody disgracefully done to say the least. Well done Guys! 😎😉👍👌👏
That’s great to hear my friend. This welder is really taking pride in this job and he and john are working really well to make it a good job. Couldn’t be happier
Evening James. That’s brilliant and looking really impressive 👍🏻
now that is skilled workmanship great job
Glad you guys think so - I agree - nice and relieving to see
Brilliant to watch people problem solving, great work guys.
I agree Gary - great to see
What a great job the welders are doing. Fascinating
Hi James. The progress is great to see !! John and the boys are working so hard , during the hottest days of this year . I think it is safe to say , I, and many other subscribers are proud of their efforts to get you back into the cut. Tell them to stay safe , and keep hydrated , my cupboard will be refilled soon. take care if you are able to travel up after work on day. C x
The young kid is a hard worker. He jumped in pretty fast to help.
If John tells you to do something. You do it. Quickly.
I am happy you have good boat Doctors in the U.K . Because it seems that way ! And A HI HO YOU GET TO GO WITH A SAFE BOAT !
We were a nation of boat builders at one time
Looking great!
The use of the jig and the boat itself to bend the plate....... amazing, its the old story the Americans spent a fortune on making a pen that would write in space, the Russians took a pencil! simple, old school thought about craftmanship, think you are in good hands there :-)
when the ‘homemade scaffold pole’ plate rig thing is removed after welding, the newly welded 6 mm base plate, although tack welded in place, will be in tension, right? (steel needs to be ‘over bent’ as it will spring back once the bending force is relaxed.
The scaffold pole rig might bend the base plate slightly, but it won’t retain the hull profile. That steel plate is going to want to relax back to its flat form and the whole fabrication will be in tension. I’m not a welder or a boat builder, but that can’t be good.
Great video John, nice editing James 😉 love seeing this sort of stuff being done
Looking good, Johns hat is awesome LOL !!
It’s his Chinese hat - he swears by it
Hi another good vlog just thought I might say that was a brilliant idea with the scaffold poles one I have not seen before must have saved hours of jacking up and moving jacks and blocks.while the boats out of the water and you have the welder there you should get a pair of fins welded to the top of the rudder it helps with the steering especially in reverse
Ooh that’s a good call - I have a bit of left over steel
And a BBQ frame over the back 😎plus the necessary swim platform 🤣🤣
Between the “Jack of all Trades”, Forkie, and John’s hat the boys get the job done…. must have been a bit nerve-wracking watching from London; and it must be a huge relief. Best wishes from us all down here in Tassie (Tasmania) 🐨
Hey you guys - john is Mr hat. He’s got such a wide range of them - that one is a Chinese hat he swears by it. I think they’re doing more today too
This would all be a lot simpler on a flat-bottomed boat, but I can see the advantages of the Springer multiple-chine hull.
Oh a flat bottomed boat - how easy - how simple.
I know what you mean about multi chine too - especially on rivers
I think its time to nominate Johnny Boy for an Oscar ;-)
Now now…..it’s all in the edit
Is his headgear a statement about the British steel manufacturing industry do you think?
I am thouroughly enjoying catching up on your old videos James and loving the plating content. I need to know, not want to know, how the hell they managed to get that overlap on the bow plate in the last plating video. Do you know? (Such beautiful welding!)
That was fascinating. you're a very lucky man James. Having all this skill where your moored. All the help and donations. Isn't life amazing mate.
I agree pal. So interesting to see proper engineering and working like this
Is that Ho Lee Fook operating the forklift?? He just needs to swap those cumbersome safety boots for a pair of flip flops.😄
I just can't even imagine welding on what was the hottest day of the year in the UK so far 😩
Tell me about it. I reckon his shorts from the 1980’s helped 🤣🤣🤣
Nice to see Sloe Patrol getting a shiny bottom. But one question: how do you rustproof the new steel facing the hull? Once it's welded in place you can't paint it...
Hi James, noobie questions. If you're adding 1.5 tonnes of steel to the bottom of the boat, does that mean to need to remove some ballast? like around 1.5 tonnes worth? Will you have to at least move ballast to re-trim the boat?
Love your videos. .you so lucky you got boat yards up there to do havy work as i am on the Kennet & Avon hard to find any good boat yards to do any work ....keep up the good work james.
Bring it here - the guys here are brilliant. The vibe ain’t bad either
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
Where is this Boatyard James?
I need some work on my hull , i am in london mate. Thanks
@@akoskis3659 mate the place was in north kilworth - the wharf. But you’re passing a lot of good places that can do that job for you. Personally, I recommend Ralph and P&S marine in Watford
good vid james keep up the good vid you be out on the cut in no time stay safe lee
Are you asking Richie to weld a centre rope point on too? You need one.
Can’t do that. It’ll set fire to my ceilings. We’ll be using the rails by the uprights - double anchored to reduce tension
Didn’t know there was a chia man working there haha 😂
It looks like this boot is going to be ace when it is finisht🤘
Am I seeing this right; the new sheet spans from port to starboard (a bit more) and the "frame" they fabricated provides the correct bend angle at the boat's centerline?
That's versus, the "frame" supports a sheet that goes from the boat's centerline to either the port or starboard at the correct angle, thus needing welding of the port and starboard sections to the boat's centerline?
I believe it's the former, not the latter process that is being done. ;-)
Centreline to port / starboard would be fun - pingggg
"fun-pingggg"?
@@TairnKA as they ping apart and become stabilisers
Sorry, I'm still not sure what you're telling me?
Maybe James and/or the shipwrights will clarify it during a video?
Thank-you for the time.
Are you referring to the "chime" (excess steal cut back but sticking out)?
looks like a bodge
