    This welder is a very knowledgeable person, he clearly knows his stuff!! All of the questions that I thought of he answered effortlessly. What a genius. I love following your journey and I have learned so much. We have bought a wide beam and are taking copious notes from you, thank you for sharing your experience . We are moored on the river Soar and are total Newbies at this. All the best from the Snow Goose.

    I love welding. It's so hot and he's got to wear a mask and hoody. Any spatter goes on his legs. Fair play to him man.

    Plasma cutting with no eye protection? I used to be old school too until I lost the sight in one eye.
    Uncomfortable to watch.

    I'm a little bit concerned about this over plating job, normally baseplates are butt welded,never ever have I seen a overlap joint on a baseplate.

    A friend who is a steel fabricator ( his own business ) building heavy plant stuff / trailers - bulk tankers, he can't believe seeing this.
    Stress fractures will happen along the welds as the plates have no formed bend / angle in them, the plates will try to spring back flat away from the edges ( stress fractures ) either through the weld or along the edge of the heat zone from the welding on the old thin side steel.

    I've been a shipyard plater for 40 years and have never seen anything like that.why would doublers be overlapped like that? Plates should always be chamfered and set up as a butt joint. Occasional plug welds should also be made on the bottom flat sections to stop the doublers sagging.if the horrible welding on the Chines start to fracture the whole bottom will start to come away.very lazy work.

      On the inland boatyards you often find welders that are totally unqualified, its pretty shocking and there are no standards for repairs at all, most surveyors have no clue about welding and will pass anything that looks OK.

    Hi James just a word of caution I have a friend whose main job is overplating boats he's had boats in where the new plates have not been fixed to the Old Hull in enough places this causes the new plates to vibrate when the boat is moving and can fracture the welds along the outside thus causing the plates to detach

    • @thwangsworld1123
      @thwangsworld1123 3 роки тому +1

      I'm a little curious about the overlap joints normally you would bevel the plates and route and cap the joints tying the old baseplate to the new one,

    • @thwangsworld1123

      Also those plate should have been folded as well as now they will be constantly under pressure.

  • @Daniel.B_63
    @Daniel.B_63 Рік тому

    For welding outside in a situation like this I'd use a dual shield wire with an Ar/Co2 mix.
    I don't know why he lapped the plates. He should have ground a bevel and butted them together then welded.
    Also odd how he fitted the steel... A lot of internal stress in those plates.

  • @thwangsworld1123

    Theoretically, rust needs water and oxygen. Any water getting between the plates would never see any air.
    Personally, I'd be tempted to screw a few greasing nipples into the inside plate and pressure feed waxoil or similar into the whole sandwich.

    Hi,
    How much does it cost to have a base over plated?
    Also how much was the steel sheets?

  • @Orxenhorf
    @Orxenhorf 3 роки тому +1

    James, speaking of plugging the old hole - did a stick of leak stop putty ever make it to you? The Amazon tracking page still says "running late" and nothing more useful. It's not really immediately useful anymore, but it would be nice that they didn't totally lose it in shipping.

  • @stevetpot3691
    @stevetpot3691 3 роки тому +1

    You need more welding to do on the side that's welded 10mm min of weld and to me as a welder myself you need to constantly weld as much at once not 100mm / 200mm at a time as I see it now your going to have a leak between the two plates the new one and your floor under it.

    • @terencejay8845
      @terencejay8845 3 роки тому

      With a new shell, they weld both interior and exterior of the floor pan, and use a dye test. You can see the little gaps in this. It will leak, maybe not much but it will leak.

    • @JasperJanssen
      @JasperJanssen 3 роки тому +1

      @@terencejay8845 there’s only so much you can do, I suppose. If it were more critical, you could grind 45 degree angles onto the plates and build it back up with weld, bottom up. That’s what they do with industrial stuff when there’s no access from the rear - or sometimes even when there is access, only then it’s 45 degrees from the middle toward both sides. But let’s be real, this is a narrowboat. Firstly, pinhole leaks are pretty well sorted by an automated bilge pump (I assume there’s a system that logs how often it turns on, so you know if there’s a real problem vs just a little condensation here or there). Secondly, as James here has just practically demonstrated, a small progressive leak will usually give you enough time to put the boat on the side for repairs. And thirdly, even if a narrowboat does sink, it typically sinks, like, 2-3 feet or less. *highly* unlikely to kill you, which is always a more important criterion than a boat sinking. Even if it is your home.
      All in all I suspect this kind of overplating process is good enough for the purpose.
