  • In this week's episode of Urban Valor, we sit down with Mark Tyler, a retired Gunnery Sergeant from the Marine Corps, who shares his remarkable journey from his early days growing up in Las Vegas, after being born in Pennsylvania, to his extensive career in the military.
Initially joining the Marines as a military police officer with an eye on a future in law enforcement, Mark found his calling within the Corps and chose to dedicate his life to it. He recounts his deployment experiences, including a harrowing incident aboard the USS Midway involving a collision with a Panamanian freighter that tragically resulted in the loss of two sailors.
Mark also opens up about his transition back to civilian life after 21 years of service and his subsequent role in the Department of Justice, offering insights into the challenges and triumphs of moving on from a life in uniform.

You are absolutely knocking it out of the park with this updated interview style.
This interview really hit home with me. I’m 59. Former 0341. Retired NYC teacher. My wife is 51, and works for a Big 4 accounting firm at 30 Rockefeller.
For the young folks, especially military veterans, when you get older, and think about your finances in retirement, you wind up reflecting on the times in your life when you were young and naive.
Nineteen year old Lance is asking about to retire, Vietnam veteran, 1st. Sgt. Hickman what he planned to do in retirement. He explained to me that was going to work at a certain GS level for the federal government. I asked him why he would be working when he could just go fishing, camping, and enjoying life. He pulled me into the office and gave me a quick lesson about the present value of his retirement dollars at age 38, and what those dollars would mean when he’s age 80. They’re worth about half every 30 years, as inflation takes its toll. I asked, “So if I do 20 in the Corps., I still have to work afterwards?” He just shook his head and smiled.
I did notice that Hickman had a tattoo on his forearm that was in the process of being removed. The Navy was doing that for him. I asked him why he chose to do that. It was a faded, poorly done bird of some sort. He then explained to me that he felt it would be unbecoming of him to have such a tattoo while employed with the government.
As a father now, of grown children, I often have these same conversations about financial planning, tattoos, and their priorities in general. I’ve become Hickman, and they the younger me.
It’s nice to see an interview with an older, second career retired Marine. He’s had an interesting life - both during and after the Corps.
    Keep up the great content.

Mark Tyler is a humble man who appears to be genuinely authentic about his life experiences. He did mention how the Marine Corps life and marriage life is or can be difficult. I had a girlfriend while stationed at Camp Pendleton and completely agree. Although I was not married at the time, I had a very good woman. The military demands and some stress was too much. We ended up breaking up. That particular woman was such a good woman that I regret losing her.
Mark has done a lot. He has traveled the world. But being away from one's wife or girlfriend, we have to be mindful and prioritize our immediate love. The moment we put work and travel, we begin to ignore our personal priorities.
Best wishes to Mark on his retirement. Enjoy it, you earned it.
