  • U.S. Marine Corps recruits arriving at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego, are taken into the contraband room and the barber during their first night of recruit training. Recruits were checked contraband items, received their first military haircut, and began recruit training.
If successful in training, these recruits will be transformed into basic Marines, representing the epitome of personal character, selflessness and military virtue.

they do that on purpose to confuse you. you need to be able to understand even when hes screaming and yelling especially if a bunch of them are at the same time. get in a firefight and have 20 people yelling 20 different things you need to be able to pay attention and understand

As a kid I never understood why drill instructors behave the way they do. But I understand. They want to get the very best out of everyone and a recruit failing is a reflection of their leadership. Massive respect to them and to the recruits that pour their heart into their training and service.

    • @flanagamer

Because they gotta get everybody on the same page, physically and mentally in a very short time period. Gotta remember, a lot of kids join right after high school and they’re used to their mommies cleaning up after them and doing everything for them like cooking and laundry. They have little discipline. Not everybody, but a large portion of Recruits are like that, and have never had to face adversity or even yelling before.

    • @anapple3445
      @anapple3445 8 місяців тому +10

It's to teach them to perform under pressure. No matter how much they scream you still have to do what you were assigned to do, it teaches discipline.

I always figured it was to desensitise people. If you have someone literally screaming in your face all day long, pretty soon it's going to feel normal and not that stressful, and given someone screaming in your face is usually pretty stressful, it probably makes people generally calmer in the long term and better able to handle combat stress.

I went through Navy boot camp in 1979. I remember that feeling of "damn, I think I probably should've gone to college instead of this". After my four year hitch I realized that my time in the Navy helped me when I did go to college. It gave me the self-discipline that I otherwise wouldn't have had. Or maybe it was that I got in a lifetime's worth of drinking and carousing in four years. It was one or the other. Anyway, got my graduate degree in biological sciences and retired at age 56 a few years ago. Thank you Navy!

I consider my first day at Parris Island to be unique among my fellow Marines. I had already served 4 years in the Air Force including a year in Vietnam. I had gotten out and finished up my two years of inactive reserve time. On December 7, 1971, 30 years to the day after Pearl Harbor, I arrived at Parris Island to begin boot camp. At 0430 that morning we sat in the bus waiting for the show to begin. A Master Sergeant got on the bus and gave us a short speech, in a normal voice, and told us he was so proud of us for joining the Marines on Pearl Harbor Day. He told us to pick up our stuff and very quietly go inside the building and have a seat next to the wall all around the room. And so our day began.
The drill instructors picked us up later in the day and from that point on it was normal boot camp. I never lost that unique memory. I became a weather forecaster in the next few years, briefing pilots on their missions. I went back to Vietnam for the second time. I also spent three years stationed in Hawaii. The first thing I did after settling in was visit the Arizona Memorial. I learned of the Punch Bowl Crater Cemetery and spent an entire day walking around reading the thousands of names of my fellow servicemen and women killed in the Pacific during WWII. To this day I share a special reverence for Pearl Harbor Day with all Americans. I'll add that I spent two years in Japan during my career. My thoughts about the Japanese people has completely changed since my boyhood. They are beautiful people and I enjoyed every minute I spent in Japan.

During Army reception that first few hours I thankfully got a female barber that was very nice and I could sense she felt a certain sympathy for us. It felt good getting that minute in the chair to sort of mentally regroup for what lay ahead. We were shaved nearly bald for all of OSUT, even after boot camp. It felt amazing being allowed a 'high and tight' the last week with actual hair to shampoo.

They'll never capture the true magic of boot camp. I remember we had a dude from New Orleans with the thickest creole accent you can imagine... he was an absolute machine, and crushed everything both mental and physical, but he absolutely refused to sound off. They would punish him with push-ups, for example, and he was just fine with that.
It evolved into a paradox of acceptance from the DIs and the other recruits. We all just kind of pretended that he would sound off. It became the subject of jokes between the DIs.
I'm not sure he would've gotten away with it except for his ability to rock a 300 PFT while barely breaking a sweat. But it pretty much made boot camp a laugh for the whole time.

That takes another cycle to do because you're not a priority of the Army anymore so now you become a "hold-over". By the time they chapter you out, the cycle that you were originally apart of had already been graduated almost a year ago.

This is the biggest difference between the Marines and everybody else. From the split second you get off the bus, EVERYTHING is based on the individual ability to FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. Once that light goes on, everything suddenly becomes easy with lots of yelling. San Diego. After the trauma of boot camp, I became so relaxed that I could fall asleep sitting in a chair and still hear anybody speaking to me. I still remember being dismissed like it was yesterday.

Man watching this is something else, I went there in December last year (unfortunately I had a medical issue and had to drop beginning of 5th week) and its all a game that first week. You get used to it thinking "okay this isnt THAT bad" before you find out its only receiving week and these arent your DI's at all. When you get to your company and meet your actual DI's they make that VERY clear, First night none of us slept cause they broke down all the extra racks and threw the pipes down on the stone floor just to mess with us. Eventually we got into a pattern "make it to breakfast, okay now make it to lunch, ok now dinner, get back survive inspection and bam sleep..."
Truly a Unique Experience, definitely not for those who cant adapt well

Hats off to anybody that goes through this. I would break the first time I was singled out by a DI. I just can’t handle someone screaming in my face. I guess I’m just too soft. I probably wouldn’t be able to handle the exercises either. If there was a chance for only one day to just do what they do on their first day just so I could get a feel of what they are feeling, I might try that to see how far I would get. I remember the army recruiter kept calling me when I was 18 and every time I said “thanks but no”. One time he called and I told him about my medical disability (mainly seizures) and he said “oh, yeah, you wouldn’t qualify to be in the army”. He never called again.
