I'm 70, and when I was a boy, we always dressed up to shopping etc. Men wore Fedoras.
Colonel Sanders was a perfectionist .He would walk into his restaurant and taste the chicken if it didn't meet his standards he would throw it in the garbage can and make them cook it all over
This was the 1950's and people did dress that way. I remember this show. Manners were lovely.
This episode was broadcast in December, 1963. After the death of panelist Fred Allen from a heart attack in 1956, Goodson-Todman Productions made it a practice to kinescope or videotape an “alternate” episode, to have in the can in the event of a death of another panelist.
When President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, the panel wanted an additional week of time for mourning his death, so CBS broadcast this “alternate” episode one week after President Kennedy’s death.
There was a similar show called "I've Got a Secret". There was one episode where the guest, who was a 7 year old boy at the time, witnessed the assassination of President Lincoln.
"I've Got A Secret" & "To Tell The Truth" were both popular game shows.

They had the most incredible guests on this show, I LOVE watching old clips and I'm so happy to see you reacting to them!
I watch this show when I was a little girl.
Obvious it was before the commercials with him on them!
The best manners on any game show ever! The panel was comprised of very sophisticated New Yorkers from the worlds of book publishing, journalism, and Broadway. They met people from ALL walks of life on this show...many of whom didn't at all fit the stereotypical image of their profession. Which made it all the more fun and challenging.
There were very elegant ladies who might have been pig farmers or bald gentlemen who made wigs. Lots of cheeky humor but everyone was treated with the utmost respect.
I've been in his home and his office and there are a number of interesting stories about him including a gunfight with a rival and the fact that he sold out rather cheaply to Pepsico and later Pepsi gave him more money to keep him as the face of the company. Worth a deeper dive on him.
There's a goldmine of guest on this show. The last guest is usually a 'star' so they are blindfolded as they guess the star. We see the young version of stars we only knew as old people. Debbie Reynolds was charming in her young years. John Wayne, Julie Andrews, Jessie Owens, Elenore Roosevelt, everyone went on this show. Yet complete strangers could steal the show. Like a female airplane salesman or sheep farmer. A young Raquel Welch charms the panel. All great stuff
Apparently, when he appeared on that show, they did not know who Colonel Sanders was. Maybe Kentucky fried chicken wasn’t very well known at that time. By the time I came around, everyone knew who Colonel Sanders was. If I’m not mistaken, he used to appear in some of his television ads.
Nice to see the Colonel, he was a former boss of mine for a short spell when I was a youngster.

The UK still does a pretty good job with panel shows. The sexual innuendo isn't hidden as much nowadays though.
Great suggestion Richard. I remember this show. It was always interesting and sometimes we would look away from the TV when they put the answer on the screen so we could guess along with the panel. It seems strange to watch this and realize KFC and Col Sanders were not always household names. But at the time this show aired, I think TV advertising was still in its relative infancy, and KFC probably hadn't taken full advantage of it yet. Like I mentioned to BPR once before. I grew up in the poor region of the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains. My family was so poor we used to walk down to Kentucky Fried Chicken on Sunday afternoon and lick other people's fingers. Colonel Sanders was in the restaurant business for many many years, but he started his own chicken store franchise after age 65 with his Social Security retirement money from the government. 😅😮
Even though the show is old with a simple premise I enjoyed it in reruns. There were several versions many countries. of What’s My Line in other countries.. The American presenter John Daly was a newsman who spoke with a TransAtlantic accent which had elements of a formal British dialect.
There was a funny segment, on the original show, in which the challenger was a woman who owned a nudist camp. You can imagine how the panel did.
Great reaction! I used to binge this show late nights when I couldn't sleep.... There were some great guests.

You have to watch this show with Philo Farnsworth (the man who invented television).
Groucho Marx was hilarious on that show.
This era of TV was for the most part very prim and proper.
The show was interesting though. I've seen reruns of it properly on a channel called TV Land.
Chickens do more or less leap about it for a time after you remove their heads. 😂

I love this show. Dorothy Killgallen has a very interesting life.
She SURE did! She was a smart cookie. A tragic ending. The WOMAN who knew too much.
How the show worked". The panel asked yes or no questions. If the answer is yes, they get to continue. If they get a no answer, they lose their turn and. the guest gets $5.00. Once they reach $50 without any panel member guessing correctly, the guest gets $50.00.
A bit of trivia, the following weeks episode was cancelled due to the Kennedy assassination. Correction, it was the week after the assassination.
This episode, which was an “alternate” episode recorded for emergencies, was broadcast one week after President Kennedy’s assassination, to allow the panel an extra week to mourn his death.

How stupid are these people that they don't know who Colonel Sanders is right away.
Not being smart enough to realize that they have future knowledge that allows them to know who he is.
I say this because of the way certain people act with "who wants to be a millionaire" answers.
Oh, you didn't know who someone was before they were a household name but now I do because it is years later and they are now. Therefore, I would have obviously got that question right back then. 😂 That isn't a $100,000 question, that is a $1 question. 😂

Colonel Sanders moved to Canada in the mid 60's and was here until he passed in 1980. I think you would enjoy reacting to episodes of The Newlywed Game or The Dating Game.

You don't actually posit that eloquence and decorum, notably in dress, are/were somehow indigenous to the North Atlantic?
Both women and men wore hats. Dress was more formal; expected to be of a higher level than the quite relaxed state of media
nowadays . . . Forgive me, but being "British" has nothing to do with it. That is your frame of reference, so that informs your reaction,
yet I guarantee you the United States didn't/doesn't look to the United Kingdom for its cues . . . Be well.
Yeah, it wasn't British, it was just the way people were back then. These are all older people too, so they are going to be even more "proper," especially back then. These people were born in the early 1900"s, Col. Sanders in the late 1800's, almost everything was different for them.
People dressed up to take a flight, to go out to eat, to do pretty much anything that wasn't a completely leisure activity.

My point was that it didn't mimic being "British," as if the denizens of the North Atlantic held a patent on civility, manners, decorum, etc. It's quite a silly observation and, truthfully, a tad arrogant. Yet it is their frame of reference. So, we make allowances. (Imagine the flak an American UA-camr would receive with similar commentary . . .)

They are good, but I wouldn't call them prim and proper. 😂 A lot of British think they are the only ones who speak proper English too, but listening to many of them will tell you that isn't true. I can say that as I am sat listening to them right now. 😂 That was funny, that. 😂
Sadly, Americans get flak from people from other country for any and every reason. France complaining about how Americans say France but our perfectly okay with butchering the pronunciation of Deutschland. 😂 I guess they don't realize people speak different languages, and those different languages have different pronunciations of countries, or just words in general.
@@user-kv6wh5ut6o Yes, it is a tedious compendium of ignorance-arrogance that manifests itself in, or on, so many avenues of the misinformed; whether it be culture, p/Politics, matters like abortion and healthcare, a federalized system of fifty separate seats of government (each with their own laws, tax structures, even militaries, given the National Guard.) That Euro-ignorance masquerading as "informed." I could write at length on this, yet I will not here. I would love to elaborate, yet let's keep it simple.
The oh, so civilized Europeans standing athwart the boorish American interlopers. And all of that run-of-the-mill rot. Yep . . . tedium. (And a dramatic eyeroll.) Oh, yes, I could write at length on this topic. (I am tempted to . . .) I will keep myself in check. The complete and utter and pervasive ignorance about the United States that oozes from social media. Not only laughable but pathetic.
