Brand’s real addiction seems to be attention. All his other “addictions” feel subordinate to his need to be adored.
Maybe he can give up drugs and sex, but he’ll never give up an audience.

There’s also tons of sacrifice in Greek Paganism. For someone who so loves symbolic stories and western civilization, it’s interesting how little Jordan ever talks about the Greeks or Romans.
I think it’s because he doesn’t want to talk about any society that was successful before Christianity existed. He wants people to believe that a world without Christianity could only be hell on earth. And we know this is obviously not the case.

Peterson talks about statistical relationships between letters and words in large language models as if he's come up with this novel idea, but it is really just the coherence theory of truth, a theory that has been around since the time of Spinoza and Kant. As ever with Jordan Peterson, the maxim holds that what's new isn't true and what's true isn't new.

These clothes that they wear - so strange. To be fair, Russell set it up long ago that he would go the Christian route - his clothing, his hair - the look of the Messiah and all the rest of it. I always got the vibe that he was trying to be a Jesus - but then I got that off JP too. But their clothing is a little too Baroque - not sure what is being signalled at this point.

Just some feedback, you guys do good work by taking apart and looking at these characters and ideas from a philosophical lense. I think while so much of what Jordan says is in need of correction, some of the stuff he says I think is quite interesting which if you disagree fair enough, but in general I think it’s good to try and be maximally charitable. I can appreciate that you’re both able to follow Jordan’s more complicated ideas and provide critic, but in a more constructive and thorough way so as to make sure to demonstrate you know exactly what he’s saying. Meme as much as you want but even Alex O’Conner the skeptic himself, was able to tease apart what Jordan was saying after a longer discussion. I really think it’s possible to bring some of these “gurus” back to reality and one of the ways to do that is to encourage the more authentic conversations that they have.

    • @andrewhaxton1076

For one, they do steelman Petersons positions several times throughout this video. One of their biggest criticisms is that Peterson uses hyperbolic and obtuse language to explain pretty simple concepts.
Secondly, he is at the stage where he is calling treatment of trans youth worst than Nazi Germany, is spouting Climate Change initiative and trying to link Bidens nomination of KBJ to the Supreme Court with the invasion of Ukraine. I think Peterson is not at a stage where he is able to be brought back to reality, especially while he is being propped up by the Daily Wire and treated like a hero by the far right. A moderate sized podcast is not going to convince him to change course.
There is room for figures like Alex O'Connor to take it serousily. But also think there is plenty of room for the likes of DTG to just point them out and laugh

Professional ideological chameleons. Nothing more than salesmen, selling whatever latest belief and talking points their market demands. Based purely on the demographic results of their latest audience survey, and whatever beliefs are in vogue. By discussing Christianity in such a detached philosophical manner, they conveniently avoid having to actually genuinely personally commit. Enabling them to pivot and align with the ever changing ideological fashions and cultural talking points their buyers want. I’m aware Brand did a baptism ceremony, but as gurus go even he’s an outlier who loves performances for attention, but he’ll jump onto another bandwagon once the fancy takes him because that’s what he’s always done.
The only predictable constant is their oppositional defiance stance, driven by their narcissistic attention thirsty need to feed their pathetic posturing as the oppressed, outraged, aggrieved and victimised misunderstood genius. And the silly outfits. All these gurus feel like little spoilt boys playing dress up who think their genius isn’t being rightfully acknowledged, creating podcasts to throw tantrums to demand to be listened to and shown the respect the world owes them. They remind me of guys who grew up being told how very special they are, then once adults couldn’t understand why the rest of the world didn’t treat them accordingly. I just watched the video on Andrew Gold, where he’s outraged the MSM hadn’t acknowledged his ‘viral’ UA-cam video, naturally it must be a conspiracy of the woke agenda ‘cult’ to silence him.

Jordan's animal analogies (rats, chimps, etc) seem insightful until you learn about ones that symbolism things he doesn't like that he ignores. He often talks about the primatologist Frans De Waal and chimps, but bonobos are just as if not more closely related to us and have a very different social structure. The females are in charge. There's no way Jordan doesn't know about this because he seems to be such a fan of De Waal, but clearly the bonobos didn't resonate with his worldview.

Actually evolution maximizes the number of offspring. Often times both go hand in hand, but not always. There are animals where death is an integral part of reproduction. For example, some animals die after sex, and others end up as food for their offspring. Or for example a society that is willing to die for its offspring could be more successful than a society that's not willing to die.

Surely that original conversation between Peterson and Brand set some sort of record for the most syllables and least value ever uttered.

Honestly I try not to be a judgmental person… but if I was in the room while these two had this exact conversation, I would literally think both had schizophrenia.

From the initial clip, I'd say Brand just needs to take a few more drugs to be one truly inspirational. I'm not sure what *kind* of drugs, but he could get there by trial and error, I'm sure. Big doses, in any case.

Honestly I hadn't heard much of brand in the last ten years, I remember thinking he was a bit quirky kind of like Jim Carrey but that opening clip of him ... he's completely lost the plot.

    Russell Brand: "babble babble...eh...eh..and and ah...ah ...g....babble babble...a...a. eh...ah...waffle waffle babble babble...I...I..ah...babble".
This dude is only correct when what he is saying is completely and utterly banal while making it sound supremely profound; and wrong when he tries to explain anything with any degree of complexity or nuance, in which case, it doesn't matter because no one knows what the hell he is prattling about. Ditto with Jordan Peterson.
To me it all sounds like the gobbledegook contained within the books on mysticism that I wasted an entire year of my life reading. The only benefit is that it has made me immune to bullshit like this. These dudes would be immediately and completely exposed in class on science, mathematics, or computer programing where they would be completely lost. And thank the gods that they are not doctors where lives are at stake. Let's just say the only wise thing they ever did was their choice of subject matter on which to prattle on about.

These two monologuing at each other is insufferable, but Brand didn't get the hawk goose experiment wrong there, I think you just misunderstood him. He was just saying North South to illustrate going one direction then the other without turning around.
Anyways, not sure how you manage to listen to all this stuff. I can feel my brain melting in the first 5 minutes.
