Most huds look the same, because they were mainly created for the creator themself and their wasn't or not until now any kind of scene for tf2 huds, but it seems to be changing with more huds being made for general purpose and playerbase rather then for the general purpose of a creator.
There’s also an oldie but a goodie- EveHud. While it’s very minimalistic and designed back in the day when Huds were basically only made for performance, it still has a few splashes of TF2 stylization without stripping away too much. The class selection screen and meter placements are great on this one, too- it’s been my personal choice for a hud for years. And probably will remain that way.
I'd really love to see more attempts at replicating EveHud. To me, it strikes the perfect balance between readability and style, whereas most other huds stray too far into either extreme.
I've been rocking Middle Mann ever since I first saw Tyler McVicker use it. It rocks, especially when you've got a big-ass 32-inch monitor like me. It isn't an ultrawide, yeah, but it's still huge and Middle Mann works well for it. Might switch it up eventually, because it can feel a tad cramped sometimes, but I love it. I get why people wouldn't, though, especially if you don't use a huge monitor like me and play on a more reasonably sized one.
ive been using middlemann basically the entire time ive played tf2, and i really love it. the initial version i installed definitely had issues, especially the shield charge meter covering what % uber a healing medic is at, but they continue to try fix these issues, and actually have introduced some customisation!
I really liked how text chat messages are displayed in you HUD, it looks so smooth like if it was a "real" chat, I can't explain it just looks really appealing to me.
I think you forgot to mention the amount of customization options you're given using CoolHUD, you can change the hitmarkers, the icons, the crosshair, the background color, the font and more to better suit your preference.
In the most respectful way possible - and I do mean that, because I loved the video - dissing squished UIs is a hot take. I absolutely loving having things like player model and other counters close to the center of the screen, and I know a lot of others who do too. Still, great video!
Yep, he's just wildin, what's the point of a hud then? 😂 The only exception I can see if you want a meme hud that completely changes the aesthetics, like that Overwatch hud or even his GTA3 hud. But I mean, if you want something more lore friendly looking but don't care about readability... *Why fix what isn't broken, aka vanilla hud?* Seems just bizarre to promote 80% of huds in this video that feels like just inferior vanilla hud, they have no aesthetics NOR readability over vanilla, so only middle man and the GTA hud looked cool/good
Glad ye checked out Middle Mann! Yes ultra wide and 4:3 resolutions are supported and have been tested by several players If the elements are too close together for your comfort there's a customizations folder that repositions them.
I don't get the point he was making, if he wants vanilla positioning but also lore friendly looking hud, why even change vanilla hud? Us average folk just want a readable hud that doesn't look ugly and your hud is looking promising so far on that front! I do wish it was slightly spaced out, or even better the boxes for the stats were smaller so it shows more of a screen, but besides that y'all actually providing high quality hud and he's wildin
As somebody who has also made my own hud, i can say that it's pretty hard to do sometimes. I believe that's why most people just go the "minimal" route when making their hud
yeah it's a lot easier to swap colors and change icons than actually mess with the layout of things. It especially doesn't help when the HUD system you're using is purely textual and you have to jankily reload stuff to see changes.
I've literally had no problem with vanilla hud outside of maybe being a tad bland, but most huds I've used back in the day were even more simplistic and positioning was too weird for me to get used to. You don't know how many times I've had a hud like middle mann and I keep looking at the left corner for my health and getting confused as its not there. So Amphud is lookin mighty juicy to me right now. However cool hud is artistically the best in my opinion so maybe that one.
the creator of middle mann made alternate version called side mann hud and its basically middle mann hud but with the UI elements in their normal places
I've got a basic 16:9 monitor and I love Middle Mann. I don't like everything being spread out, I _want_ it all in my immediate vision so I can actually see it. Though to be honest, if there was a hud that removed almost everything and just put it in a small radial style around my crosshair like how Half Life does it, I'd probably switch to that in a heartbeat.
I honestly found the Middleman HUD to be good for dyslexia. It takes a minute for someone like me to read info at a glance when it's at the corner of the screen. Pushing it all closer to the middle makes it easier to read it in my peripheral so I can read it faster when I glance at it. The creator of the HUD also has their own crosshair pack for people with dyslexia. But I do have a few gripes with the HUD, I think alot of the extra information in the middle (such as cool down meters) make the HUD feel more clumped and sloppy. Sometimes even overwhelming. There's a few customization options but they don't really seem to provide what I'm looking for. I do wish there was an option to set Engineer's metal count to be under the crosshair like in Toon HUD. But I appreciate the HUDs that prioritize those who suffer from mental and visual disabilities. Also I gravitated towards it in the first place due to it's alignment with the game's art style.
middle mann hud actually have customization option to make it non-centered. and also i don't have big monitor, but i more like centered huds just so i don't have to always look around to find my ammo and health.
I recently got an ultrawide screen and I was kinda hoping a HUD mod that would help me actually SEE my health and ammo would come up in this video. Very much appreciated from a long time viewer :)
From what I see, RamiHUD takes clues from smash ultimate's UI, mainly on the class health, class render, etc. You can see it pretty eassily if you have both a smash ultimate in-game percentage indicator right next to RamiHUD, and the ugly class health indicator is also where the series logo is in smash ultimate, so that's pretty much why it's all the way over there
for the ultrawide hud conversation, in my case (I use a 21:9 monitor) all hud elements (save for the kill feed) are where they would be on a normal 16:9 monitor, with the only real difference coming from the extended edges of your screen
this does tend to mess up with hud mods though, some elements are further spread out, this depends on how the creator sets them up (for example; keeping them at a set distance tethered to the edge of the screen instead of setting screen coordinates.)
i use Eniere's Improved default HUD , which is just vanilla but with custom hud features, (and uber under the crosshair) so you get team color switching in backpack, more options and its just so nice to use
As someone with somebody ultra wide screen, when i watch my health or recharge bar things, i cant see whats happening infront of me, so the second hud sounds good to me
My personal favorite default style hud is Console Hud. Some people probably won't be able to tell the difference at first, but the slightly more centered ui really helps me
i've been using ramihud for a while now, i like how vanilla it is while still being very pleasant and readable. there's a new version (not used in the video) that makes the ammo counter look like a mirrored version of that square that shows your class and hp, and it looks really good
lionhud was the base for middlemann and i honestly like it more, because middlemann feels like they crammed a bunch of unnecessary stuff in it compared to lionhud
I found cool hud like a year ago and when i saw it i instantly thought of it as a default hud but if tf2 was on source 2. Some parts i didn't like so i modified the hud a little myself and im certain i'll never change it.
so glad huds like middle mann, neofunke hud amphud, and darhud released, fucking tired of the same 3 numbers with generic fonts that look really boring
Pretty bad take on the Middle Mann The reason the huds are "squashed" in the middle is to lessen eye constraint, when you have the health and ammo huds all the way at the fucking corners of the screen you have to keep looking away from what you're doing to check crucial information which is annoying, and no this doesn't just apply to ultrawide monitors but any big monitor in general I assume that your monitor screen is actually small/average sized so the fact that the ammo and health are displayed at the corners of the screen isn't gonna affect you much, Middle Mann is for big monitors
I really like PVHud, i know the hud is really old now but it gets rid of all the junk and helps you see things a bit better without large numbers covering half of your screen, i tried Middle Mann in the past and I'm not a fan of it imo.
Seems like most huds don't put enough focus on the health bar. I need that visual feedback on the class' health without having to move my eyes. There's no creamy in between, even today all HUDs are either empty competitive huds that don't give you any visual feedback or vanilla-styled huds that go way overboard with the flashing lights and fonts. (no offense coolhud) There's enough content to please everyone and make their own ideal hud, but it just has to be made with frankensteined parts. Ive gotten so attached to the base tf2hudplus that I just splice in tons of elements from other huds until it makes something close enough to what I'm hoping to see. Seeing the amount of work put into each HUD gives me so much respect for the creators though, I made an edit of the 2012 main menu mod and doing just about anything took DAYS just for something that will be overlooked and clicked past in in instant.
I've had very minor uses for it in the past (inviting and joining people is easier than through steam) but yeah I think the friends list in the main menu sucks. It kills performance every time the main menu loads. For me as a creator I also don't like the potential of weird names popping up.
oh I mostly dont like it since I sometimes upload clips ive made but I have to waste time to edit out the times ive had my friendlist shown cause it aint appropriate for yt and id like to stream at some point but I cant stream tf2 with my friendlist shown.@@naii_
Middlemann looks good to me from a quick glance from the video, I do play on a 1080p screen tho, although I do like the added health counter cuz i really feel lost with the vanilla hud just being so barren idk what’s going on or whatever.
Ultra wide enjoyer here, with stock hud you just gotta play by feel, you cant read shit especially when combat is tense. MiddleMann is a godsend to me.
meh, you didn't even mention the good classics huds since as morehud, flawhud, budhud, etc. Or any of the new innovative mods like jofrehud, xhud, etc. or any of the nice unique huds like weirdcorehud, zeeshud, or hexhud. you complained about half the huds which doesn't make sense in a video named "TF2's Best HUD Mods". personally i use my own fork of xhud which fixes tf2's 4k resolution support (and has hundreds of other tiny little tweaks). kbnhud is definitely a lot more modern looking than darhud imo. if you wanted to make a video on tf2's best hud mods why don't you only mention hud mods that you actually like or are popular or innovative?
My problem with most custom huds is they're made for efficiency and therefor look ugly and I think most of them look the same because they're trying to do the same thing
I really like the minimalistic style of the hexhud but playing medic with that hud is giving me a headache and makes me want to throw up. why is there no health bar when healing others and I have to pay attention to the number values
For me, it's coolhud. It just oozes the TF2 style I like, going even further than the default hud in that. I don't care about charge icons as I normally just use stock weapons so it's perfect to me.
they're closed captions, you can turn them on ingame but they don't work for the most part. You can use Mods to fix them, and it's popular for HUD mods to include caption fixes. My HUD mod includes captions. Seems like some of the other ones here do as well.
Middle Man Hud, now where da cookie? Edit: It LOST? Mate, then what is the point of those other huds then? 😂 We all mostly agree that original vanilla hud looks good, right? Mate I've literally expected more huds like this being shown, because sadly I've noticed that unfortunately our choice as TF2 players is either ugly but super useful readable huds or super aesthetic ones like vanilla hud or Overwatch HUD but with bad readability 😢
Most huds look the same, because they were mainly created for the creator themself and their wasn't or not until now any kind of scene for tf2 huds, but it seems to be changing with more huds being made for general purpose and playerbase rather then for the general purpose of a creator.

As an ex-hud dev, i've been saying that for all my tf2 career

the gta 3 hud is underrated, great work nai!
shocked zeeshud wasnt on here
Another HUD that I feel should be brought up in discussion is Zees HUD, it's so aesthetically contrasting with TF2 but sometimes you just want that
oh man i had that installed and it was really freakin awesome- unfortunately my pc couldnt handle the total awesomeness so i have to switch
3:17 this hud was made for recording shorts and tiktoks without cutting out the hud
I was looking for some cool tf2 huds, really nice vid

The best hud is Toon Hud, you can customize a lot, never been looking for another HUD and don’t see a point to do so.

6:23 I'm assuming this is so the Ubercharge meter can fit there, but I'd hope there's a way to change the panel when necessary.
I actually noticed it encompasses I think only one charge panel... and that's demo's sticky charge. tbh, more common stuff should be put there.
amphub my beloved

so real so true
Fellow AmpHud enthusiast. We meet at last.😎💪
i mean this in the kindest way when i say that the gta3 hud takes SO MUCH energy to look at the corner for EVERY bit of info

so glad huds like middle mann, neofunke hud amphud, and darhud released, fucking tired of the same 3 numbers with generic fonts that look really boring
Gotta say you got some sick gameplay! nice video
Does anyone know a mod for ONLY see the damage on the hud? Its the only thing i want
this is why eve hud is still my go to after all those years
zeeshud shouldve been mentioned here, a highly stylized and novel look for tf2 huds
i will not tolerate middle mann slander...
Pretty bad take on the Middle Mann
The reason the huds are "squashed" in the middle is to lessen eye constraint, when you have the health and ammo huds all the way at the fucking corners of the screen you have to keep looking away from what you're doing to check crucial information which is annoying, and no this doesn't just apply to ultrawide monitors but any big monitor in general

All of these are bangers, used most, now onto DarHud.
They're so damn good.
In the GTA 3 hud the kill feed is move to the left
I use TF2HUD+, because in minmode it has something more centered, but still has more personality, and doesn't look corporate AF. Cool video!
Nothing beats the default hud with the 2006 class icons on the healthbar.
How...how could you not tie the score to the cash counter...you're...you're a monster!
no I'm just dumb sadly
so i have a question about ramihud, i really like it but, i have no idea whats wrong with the file, but i cant unpack it, it gives me some error
love the use of "more gooder" in the thumbnail
To me, LionHUD is still the best HUD for maintaining the games design while having all the benefits of a custom HUD
Well made video fellow clone!

Seems like most huds don't put enough focus on the health bar. I need that visual feedback on the class' health without having to move my eyes. That GTA hud rules. Give me a Vice City version and I’m sold.
I think the middle man hud is gonna be nice on ultra wide monitors, defualt is just to far away from the center when playing on ultra wide xd
If you are here for a minimal hud (why), you can never go wrong with rayshud. It looks clean in every way possible
Middle mann and Zees hud is best (in my opinion)
even though coolhuds design isnt for me I love the animations on the numbers so much
You should check darhud again, it has come along way and (in my opinion) is the best hud nowadays lol
personally im mored annoyed how there isnt enough huds who hide the friendlist same friendlist i've hidden on my profile
I've had very minor uses for it in the past (inviting and joining people is easier than through steam) but yeah I think the friends list in the main menu sucks. It kills performance every time the main menu loads. For me as a creator I also don't like the potential of weird names popping up.

3:21 just change the resolution of your monitor to a 21:9 display that fits your monitor's max resolution, its not hard
do you guys know how, in half life 2, the rounded crosshair displays health and ammo as sidebars? does anyone know if I can get that in tf2?
Like these choices, but, imo, ToonHud is all I need... customizable to the point where you're responsible for making it look the best for your taste
The GTA 3 hud is Really incredible but life gets a little hard to see
idk how better to describe this but watching this video was deeply unsatisfying
sad...
I use toonhud because it allows me to customize the HUD.
CoolHud has been my go to ever since I first saw it.
watching this video is like hud shopping
meh, you didn't even mention the good classics huds since as morehud, flawhud, budhud, etc.
@@Niterux "best" doesn't mean there aren't any problems with some of them

I am a ToonHUD man. Been using it for years. I can customise it somewhat to my own liking which always allowed me to switch things
ToonHUD is good
I really like the minimalistic style of the hexhud but playing medic with that hud is giving me a headache and makes me want to throw up. why is there no health bar when healing others and I have to pay attention to the number values
I'm surprised Zeeshud isn't here

ramihud looks like the smash bros hud
i liked this video alot, the intro and outro reminded me of old funke videos.
I HATE weezer (lie)
I CANNOT ESCAPE TALLY HALL
in the introduction part how do you get that circle crosshair for soldier and demo it looks cool
Funke looks different
how do i get the thing you had that shows when your teammates get hurt
GTA 3
where's my cookie
edit: Amp hud ammo thing works with huntsman
Why does everyone like taking the health numbers out of the health bar. It looks so ugly to me.
How did you install the “[soldier]: owhhh” mod? Can I have the link please, thanks
they're closed captions, you can turn them on ingame but they don't work for the most part.
You can use Mods to fix them, and it's popular for HUD mods to include caption fixes. My HUD mod includes captions. Seems like some of the other ones here do as well.
Thank u,u just earned yourself a subscriber
i find middlemann more readable than vanilla and i'm on 16:9 :3
your hud is your new hud
Judoff HUD is rlly rlly good
wait, i wanna know how to make a hud. not toon hud. anyvods?
I still use the default hud
I just love something about it's shittiness

Really I don't get the point of the "aethetic" huds which look so close to vanilla, just use vanilla hud...
At least stuff like Overwatch Hud I kinda get and I always wanted a hud like that but to use hud and aesthetics from other games like Deus Ex series, but what's the point of downloading a hud if the placement will be relatively the same of stats and it even looks relatively same as vanilla hud? 😅
9:18 Joke or not but I actually like your hud a lot unlike 80% of other huds you showed in the video, sure it definitely bad for readability but at least you provided good aethetics 🥹. Mate I've literally expected more huds like this being shown, because sadly I've noticed that unfortunately our choice as TF2 players is either ugly but super useful readable huds or super aesthetic ones like vanilla hud or Overwatch HUD but with bad readability 😢
