To be honest, that whole " if you're on medication, you're not in touch with your natural energy " thing just feels pretty ableist and unrealistic to me. I mean, I think a lot of people couldn't live comfortably without meds and that's valid.

As a transplant patient, I take meds twice every day. I also have another person’s body part in me! I feel I am quite in touch with my natural energy. Who knows, perhaps I have a little “extra” energy thrown in! 🤣🤣🤣

As someone who has to take multiple prescriptions, multiple times a day, I am glad my energy is not “natural,” lol. My unmedicated, natural energy would be scattered, moody, irrational, depressed, anxious, and living within my pain. I don’t know how successful my magical practice would be!
My unpopular opinion is that you can learn more about a plant's spiritual uses through researching it's medical and historical use than looking for "witchcraft meanings". (Plus, its a LOT easier to do and makes spiritual properties easier to understand for newbies!)

This!!!! I’m not experienced at all, but as a beginner witch, I use practical and mundane uses and aspects of an herb to correlate to magical uses ALL THE TIME. Ex: henbit deadnettle is a self pollinator and spreads quickly, therefore it’s great for self love and growth
Yeah I really agree with this. I'm kinda new to witchcraft and it's so annoying that some sources are like 'its all about your own opinions'. I KNOW but if I'm new I can't be expected to be great at energy sensing or to just instantly be able to think off and apply all my personal associations to spells. I think a good example of this it The Green Witch it's a great book but not for beginners. It annoyed me so much how much of it was 'its all about you' SO WHY DID I BUY THIS BOOK. Teach me how to hold a pencil before you teach me how to draw. Give people some guidance
I guess my unpopular opinion is that I wish people would just let newer practitioners make mistakes. Mistakes is what makes your practice so personalised because you learn from them! Another thing I can’t stand is that Celtic paganism and culture just got watered down to “similar to Wicca” and it drives me INSANE

It honestly doesn't help when the Celtic Practice was watered down so much already by Christianity. Gods and Goddesses became Fae or witches, practices became generalized, stolen, or lost. Myths became rewreitten or lost. Then Wicca comes into play and a lot of Wiccan ideaology involves the idea of mixing pantheons. A normal Pagan tribe didn't mix pantheons (unless that tribe was taken over by another, like Welsh and Celtic. there's an entire story about why the Welsh and Celtic Pantheons work side by side), and that's not an unpopular opinion that's fact. The Mixing of Pantheons only became a thing in recent years, like mixing Roman and Greek, or Norse and Egyptian. Or bringing in the Christian/Jewish ideas of Demons and shoehorning that into another Pantheon of gods. Chances are THERES A REPRESENTATION OF THAT IN THE PANTHEON YOU PRIMARILY WORK WITH.

UPG: Everyone's energy is different and interacts with different energy differently. The reason why some people, using your example, use rosemary in a hex is because of what kind of energy is formed from mixing their energy with rosemary energy. This is just a UPG, as stated above.
Unpopular Opinion: You are not obligated to work with your ancestors if your ancestors would despise you doing what you're doing. I am a celtic witch, my ancestors were VERY Christian. I tried to call out to them (because I didn't know), they tried to burn down my house with a tea light on a fireproof plate. The flame got out of the tea light and onto my dresser. There is no physical or scientific way for that flame to jump out of the tea light and cause a fire on the alter cloth. I did a reading with my goddess and it came up with I angered them for being a witch. Not everyone's ancestors are there to protect them, that's a huge general misconception. It doesn't make you a bad person either. It just means you have ancestors who would be willing to watch you burn and you need to look for other spiritual guardians. I've seen a lot of people get attacked, myself included, on social media for not respecting or reaching out to their ancestors. Not everyone needs to or can call out to their ancestors. "Oh well, you just didn't go old enough" My ansestors were one of the first pagan tribes to willingly be converted. HOW DEEP WOULD I HAVE TO GO?! It's just not worth it when a grand majority of my ansestors want me dead. I'm not going to respect that.

When I started working with my ancestors I was pretty upfront that I was using this life on earth to undo their terrible legacy and that they could support me on my quest or get the fuck outta my way. I'm really happy to hear from other chronically ill witches! I have CFS/ME and I'm autistic, witchcraft is one of my lifelong special interest but I often felt like an imposter because either my physical or mental health was getting in the way of regular practice. I'm in a good place practice-wise at the moment, but I still feel guilty that so many of my witchy interests have to be on the backburner most of the time because I just don't have the energy to do more than the basics. Building relationships with deity is really hard cause I feel like I'm not doing enough/I'm being flaky, I can't remember when I started a spell or what I needed to do at that time, can't follow time-related correspondances because my health is too unpredictable to stick to that kind of commitment... But when I finally sit at the altar or listen to a podcast about Irish paganism or say a little prayer while making dinner, things just feel right and maybe it's enough 😌
The one about tarot readers, looking up the meanings is something that is sometimes needed to get the right message across. Sometimes I find myself being called to look at the book, even though I can usually remember all of the cards, and those are the times when I just need to use the specific wording there. Doesn't make you a bad reader if you need the meanings from a book or on a card!
This ! every card has several meaning especially in oracles. I have a notebook with a bunch of key words and I like to look at the notes for my cards and see what word resonates the most
My unpopular opinion: leaving food out to just sit for offerings is wasteful. If you wish to do an edible offering this is what I do and I have heard of other doing, which is offer for them to either enjoy the food through you while you eat it or offer for them to enjoy it spiritually while you enjoy it physically.

as someone who is on antianxiety meds, i feel a lot more connected to my "natural energy" when I am not constantly worrying about the world collapsing out from under me. I'd be a barrel of gunpowder about to explode without it and I cant imagine trying to practice like that
On the whole ascribing “new meanings” to herbs and ingredients: Basically how I see it is it’s like signs and omens where it’s personal to a level. If white or blue isn’t a calming colour for me why should I use it with calm as an association just cause lots of people agree and/or have agreed over the years. When it comes to herbs it’ll usually come from traits the herb has for me. Like if the leaves of a certain plant feel really icky texture wise to me or feels uncomfortable to hold I’d totally use it in a hex to make someone feel uncomfortable. Or like I love lemons and sour things nothing has ever been too sour for me but the sour stuff I like to eat repels others often so I’ll use lemons/lemon juice as a ward or form of protection for myself. I hope that all makes sense!

agreed!! I'm an artist and desginer, so color meanings and properties for me don't always match up with traditional witchcraft associations. The color associations I use are a mash of color theory, magick correspondences, and my personal experience.
A little random note: I'm honestly grateful for the witchcraft community that's on Tik Tok, because I've learned a lot about the craft - particularly about closed practices, colonisation and racism, and personal practice. All the books I read before interacting with the community were incredibly white washed, and were through the 'new age' lense. c:
my unpopular opinion: Sometimes working with a deity can be seen as disrespectful to the people of that religion and culture. Working with/Worshipping a God that belongs to a specific religion should not just be learning about the God themselves but also the religion and culture associated with that God and using that knowledge correctly to respectfully worship the God. For example in Hinduism (bc I'm Indian and most of my Indian friends are Hindu): You can't just work with Ganesh Ji. Ganesh Ji is tied to Hinduism and is a very well known God. He's been worshipped for 1000s of years in Hinduism and you can't just waltz in and begin worshipping him and "working" with him. You have to read about not only him as a God but also about the religion itself, how he is worshipped/respected/how shrines are made for him/how people pray to him/etc, the culture that's tied to him and the history of not only the religion but culture. The people born of that culture who worship those Gods have learned to since they were children. It has been passed down from their ancestors all the way to them. Taking the time to learn how a native worships/works with a Deity is the bare minimum. edit: I'mma add that this also applied to the concept of spirit guides, guardian angels, chakras, the third eye, kharma, and spirit animals bc these concepts didn't just come out of thin air
When does someone's practice with a deity from Hinduism become non-problematic? For example... For the past year I've been practicing my own way of connecting to Lord Shiva. I pray to him and sing shiv stotram for him daily. I've been interested in Hindu philosophy for a long time and I actively read and research about shaivism, advaita vedanta, yoga and jaiva dharma. I don't know how shiva is worshiped outside of mantras, prayer and lingam statues, so I have no idea if my practice is appropriative or not. My UPG with Shiva is that he doesn't really care unless you understand the underlying nature of brahmam and you're prepared to face incredible challenges in your life. People on the other hand do care, so I'm wondering if my practice is fine with the native practitioners.

UPG: I know the whole blowing-out-candles-is-disrespectful bit is more Wiccan, but I only snuff my candles now if they're on-going spells, spirit or deity candles. I snuff spell candles to "pause" the spell. And for me, blowing deity candles/spirit candles feels disrespectful--it almost conjures the image of spitting in someone's face for me, the action feels similar, so I just don't do it. Candles for prickly wards I will blow out for that reason, because it does conjure that image of spitting in someone's face. Like I said, UPG.
Random but my unpopular opinion is that you don't actually have to know what the differrnt tarot cards meanings. I just look at the pictures in the background (and the picture as a whole) and "know" what it repersents to me. Every time its crazy accurate.
I wish more people would be! I don’t mind disagreeing with people/having different opinions - it shows me a different perspective and helps me grow. My only time that I tend to not listen is if the opinion is actively harmful towards someone!
Speaking of tools: most of the time you already own all of the things you might need in your practice and spellwork. Say, think of the items that hold special meaning to you. An example: when I was like 10 or 11, my mom gave me a small compact mirror - a plastic thingie the size of my palm that she got in a newspaper store, or maybe it was a "buy a perfume, get a mirror" offer in the local makeup shop. Anyways, I've used it for scrying ever since, and I'm 32 now - it's been a lot of time. I immediately kinda resonated with this mirror and it goes everywhere with me. No fancy crystal orbs or anything. Same with crystals - sometimes that pebble you've kept in your jewelry bag since you were six will be your best artifact for grounding. That pendant you've always liked? Yup, can serve as a pendulum. Some of the best spells in my practice came with just a piece of paper or a bay leaf from the kitchen; a pen; and a lighter. Make a sigil, charge it, draw it and burn the paper/leaf. And you're done. No need to go to the occult store or order stuff from Amazon. Don't get me wrong, I love my fancy tools, I have a collection of Tarot and oracle decks, a few crystals, an amethyst pendulum... But they're not a necessity! I bought and use them because I genuinely like them, and not because any practice without them would be impossible. Because it would not be.
unpopular opinion: a lot of people forget that newer witches are NEW like they are still learning don't be too hard on them for not knowing something or making a mistake
As a pharmacy tech and also a beginner herbalist and witch, many many medicines comes from herbs and traditional remedies. They take the active ingredient from those herbs and make them into medicine which is then tested and tested again and then tested for a third time. Ex, saint John’s wort can and will lower blood sugar, it’s active ingredient is used in diabetes medication. Which is why people who take those meds can’t use saint John’s wort, because they can go into a low. So saying that it takes away from your natural energy is saying if you use an herbal remedy you won’t be able to connect to your natural energy. I do think it’s pretty ableist.

my unpopular opinion is you don't have to do shadowwork everyday, I believe you should take your time. Especially to process information you may have come across when healing whether you struggle with mental illnesses or not
I would say definitely do NOT do shadow work everyday! Is this an unpopular opinion? It’s exhausting, and yes, you definitely need time to process/integrate.
Totally agree! Shadowwork is not an every day task, it's a hard and slow process that is better to do on days when you're mentally prepared for it. I also think it's important to make sure you have time in the day for self care after a session because of how draining it can be. And my final thoughts is that counseling/therapy is shadowwork.
The ancestor one really surprised me. I come from 2 opposing branches, one being oppressors, the other oppressed. One side was in the slave trade in the 18th century, the others were pillaged, oppressed and enslaved by colonising forces. I have only ever done ancestor work with the oppressed side of the family. It is the side of the family that I am close to, that I relate with and also the ones who have a magical tradition. I have rejected the colonising side completely. It is also the toxic side if the family (go figure) and the ones I have not seen since the age of 10. Thinking of doing ancestor work with this side that almost feel severed off at this point feels difficult.
“There’s a power to keeping certain things secret” There’s a short book called “Ritual” by Malidoma Some Patrice. It’s very short but soooo good and it talks about why things are better left hidden. It’s so cool.
I know personally, spell jars are the spells I do as I am being tested for adhd. I get random spurts where the more intensive spells I’d like to do, the timing isn’t right, so spell jars are my go-to. I’d like to be able to do more intensive work, but the way my brain works at the moment, it’s the best way I can do it. Also, the “casting a circle” for me used to be a whole thing: salt, incense, the whole shabang. Now it’s simply using lavender, lemon, lemongrass, and mint oils and just sprinkle them around me and my working space. I try to practice at my altar, but with my back, sometimes sitting at my desk is easier

I agree 100000% I haven't been diagnosed yet (no affordable resources unfortunately) but there's a lot of evidence to support that I likely have adhd especially with all the testing my daughter is getting for it (and autism). I don't have the mental capability to sit and focus for a long time on spellwork etc. I do "lazy" spells like simmer pots and spell jars or money bowls
Unpopular opinion thing: stop scaring younger witches out of working with spirits. Sure, you should inform them of the dangers but also tell them the benefits, and how to safely communicate with spirits. I started spirit working before I was a witch, when I was verrrry young (like, 8 years old), and I didn’t have problems. I don’t see the use of scaring young people out of doing things that aren’t exactly scary.
I remember hearing about the blowing out candles in Wicca for the Solitary Practitioner (I think that's the title) by Scott Cunningham. Which is Wiccan, but it was for a time one of the most widely available witchcraft for beginners books around, and combined with the witchcraft=Wicca misinformation that spread around the same time made that one very popular.
As I was taught, blowing out a candle blows the desire away from yourself, instead of drawing it to you. I don’t think it matters, but it’s still ingrained in me to use a snuffer.

unpopular opinion: while it’s best to wait on deity work for abt a year on deity work, but there are always exceptions. for example, i was raised catholic and folk mexican practices so i’ve been working with the christian god and saints my whole life and i barely started the craft
I still use the God who visited Abraham and Jesus for spells. And they still work. I mean I grew up Christian but I'm a witch now. I literally did a old trauma removal spell by rubbing neroli oil clockwise on my Sacral Chakra and I asked them to remove the old trauma. And It worked. But this is controversial lol. The Abrahamic God can trigger people.
As someone who has very real and often distressing memory issues and has been into tarot for over 3 years at this point, I have had to accept that I won't always be able to remember all the meanings of every card. It's perfectly okay to need the booklet, or another reference book. Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but ableist ones like this should be challenged. If YOU don't want to continue tarot bc YOU don't remember all the meanings, that's fine, but don't tell someone else they can't, regardless of if they have any disability or not.
As a chaos practitioner I don’t really keep a book of shadows because it is almost counter intuitive to my path (in my opinion). But when it comes to deity work and plant spirits I write everything down because that, for me, is the part of my practice that is important to document.
I think its so funny when talking about medication and witchcraft ppl say like it blocks you inner whatever or idfk because in my case, i have depression and i can not function without my medication like how am i gonna conect with my powers if cant keep myself alive?
About witchcrafting without tools: It doesn’t have to be intention only just because you’re not using fancy tools. I like to use tools but a lot of the time I don’t. I often trace protective sigils on my front door and walls using my finger 🤷🏼♀️ Or take some small token of gratitude, like food, and put in a place of significance out in nature, along with a plea for some kind of help and/or just a sign of respect for the spirits of that place. A lot of spirit work can be done without tools. I have an altar in the spirit realm where I travel to do witchcraft when I’m out and about or don’t want to do the work in the physical realm. That takes practice, but it isn’t any less real and no tools are needed. Words can be incredibly powerful too: spoken, sung, whispered, written… look at what words do in our daily life and has done throughout human history and tell me they can’t move mountains. So yeah. No need for tools in witchcraft. And a lot of the more powerful tools are free. Some of my favourite herbs to work with are common weeds: nettles and mugwort can be found in cities around the world and are awesome. To make moonwater you just need a small amount of water (tap, rain, melted snow, stream, bottled…) and someplace to put it. Salt can be found in most kitchens, and no one will look at you funny for keeping a couple of salt packets from McDonalds in your purse or room. Pen and paper don’t have to be fancy to work for sigils, you can use any old pen and some scrap paper and do wonderful magic.
Unpopular opinion/frustrations: Sometimes people don't have a strong percentage of one place. My mom is from Puerto Rico, so I call myself Puerto Rican American, since my dad is white (mixed Western European) and I lived mostly in California. On my dad's side, I have at least Irish, Italian, and Norse (Swedish/Danish) and sometimes it is hard to know who to connect with (and I am lucky to know). So based on ancestry, three of the main big European pantheons (and most likely Greek due to the Italian side being from Naples). I also see gods and spirits coming into being through belief, kinda of like give and take, as shown in Discworld and Good Omens.
To add to that, what about working with the deities of the land you live on? (Living in North America, but with ancestors from Scandinavia and the British Isles.) I always thought that would be fine, but these days it would be cultural appropriation/co-opting a closed practice.
As someone who works 12 hour shifts everytime i work and work a full time job with other parts of my life that need to be dealt with… i WISH i could take more time for spells, my practice etc. and i had to finally listen to what i was being told and that was being told “hey its ok do what you need and in your way”. So now I’ve adapted forms of practice into things i have to do super often anyways.
I think when issuing herbs for other uses, you have to play with it’s common meaning. Let’s use rosemary as an example. If used against an @buser, it is thereby protecting by causing h@rm to the @buser. Still protective but used banefully

NOT ALL DEITY OFFERINGS MUST BE FOOD!!! OR EVEN PHYSICAL ITEMS!!!! In no way do I mean that food offerings aren't great (I use them myself), but I feel like sooo many people don't understand that there are other things you can do/give. Art (one of my personal favorites), playing music/creating a playlist for that deity, spending time outside, wearing their colors, even just saying thank you to them is good.
Omg about the substitutions; so many peole have told me that I could use Rosemary as a substitute for any herb, and I've had a personal relationship with Rosemary as a plant since I was a child, so for me Rosemary is so specific but I never had the language to describe why until now
So much yes for so many! Those of us who were teens the mid to late 90s remember the movie The Craft. For me this is what got me into witchcraft then Wicca then a more grounded for me practice rooted in my own traditions. While films and such definitely warp a topic or subject, many times to its detriment, sometimes those distortions can lead to wanting to learn more. Which can, sometimes, lead to a more realistic in your face, rose glasses off, view of a topic. Hope that makes sense! Also love the one about imagination!
my unpopular-ish opinion is that most resources are super over sensationalized and google is becoming much less reliable. There are a lot of websites and blogs that just "yeah you can copy my homework but change it a lil so they don't notice" off eachother, to the point of unhelpfulness. Additionally, many have been noticing that google just shows you like 7 ads at the top of your search results and sometimes just straight up ignores most of your search. Finding information on a specific topic leads mostly to stuff thats vaguely related or has similar keywords, and most you'll end up reading is information which has been regurgitated by 5 different blogs beforehand. I think genuinely everyone would benefit from just picking up a couple of books, watching youtubers like you or olivia, and going outside and figuring shit out yourself. In witchcraft i think that no source is more accurate than yourself, at least when it comes to stuff like correspondence, signs and spirit work. This does exclude history, toxicity, and culture though because those are things that are either based on objective truth or simply not something you can access or have all the knowledge for to practice correctly and safely.
I've found a fair of people in western witchcraft communities that say "it's wrong to think demons are evil" which I think is really weird because thinking demons aren't evil is an opinion, and while it's a totally valid opinion to have so is the belief that demons are evil.
13:18 This was told to me by an Indigenous friend, now keep in mind I do not live in the USA so it could be different there. The reason that you don't blow out candles, or anything for that matter, (like if you were starting a fire you would fan it instead of blowing on it) is because your breath is part of your Spirit, and when you blow on things you are giving away parts of your Spirit. Your Spirit is a precious and personal thing, therefore you should not give it away. That is what she told me, I personally still tend to blow out candles, but I figured I'd share in case anyone was interested.

With all due respect to your opinion, I feel like tiktok has done a lot to ‘humanize’ witches/witchcraft. There are absolutely outliers, but seeing people like you, thathoneywitch, and others really helped me when I first started looking into the craft and paganism. Seeing how grounded you folks were helped me unlearn a lot of the fear mongering perpetuated by western/christianized society

I also something that annoys me about how a lot of people seem to claim, that they have a special relationship to their deities, acting like they are best friends (or partential figures), which is really weird. thank you for mentioning chronic illness and disability. I have Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis so I am in pain literally all the time. I have to choose my lower pain days to get spells done and to practice my craft more. sometimes on high pain days I can do something simple like research or reading but sometimes I can’t even do that because of the brain fog that comes with the fibro. It took me a while to accept that I was still valid in my practice if I went long periods without being able to do anything related to my craft.
I think most people I’ve noticed on the online witchy spheres I inhabit (which is mainly reddit and yt) generally hold the opinion that you are the only tool you really need, it’s not that the opinion is unpopular it just only seems to come out when someone is asking “do I need xyz to do this”, so perhaps, people need to make more mentions and content around it, like if someone is asking for advice on protection, we could bring up creating psychic shields and the power of visualizing in magic more often than we do as a community maybe 🤷♀️ Even if I wouldn’t technically call it unpopular I’m glad it was brought up because people really should discuss it more loudly as I *feel like* *hopefully* *most witches* do resonate with that idea (:
8:31 I don't post my practice and not a lot of people know about it. But I do love the aesthetic of it, it sort of gives me some power like decorating my altar, and the pretty cristals or even black nails. It is not just rooted on that but it certainly makes me feel powerful and like it's mine.
I agree with your take about "everything happens for a reason" in that sometimes shitty things happen and it means nothing. I think I tend to lean into less about the actual thing has no reason but "your" reaction has meaning...does that make sense? I think an example to explain would be, you got a flat tire. Not because you did a bad thing, or because you needed to meet the tow truck person who is your "soulmate" because sometimes bad things happen. But maybe you can take the lesson of needing to be more patient, you can take the lesson of learning to roll with unexpected things, you can take the lesson of maintaining better car maintenance. Does that make sense to someone else? The event doesn't mean anything but what you do or react to the event does.
Not an unpopular opinion but wanted to share my experience with witchcraft I gave up. why? because 1. I can't do a ritual everyday, I can't do something consistently and it is usually because I forget 2. I don't feel greatly connected to witchcraft, I've tried hard to keep up the work and connect with my abilities and craft but I feel like I never gained anything out of it or nothing ever happened. 3. I've found it to be far too watered down and was never sure what was right or wrong, some said you need tools, others said you don't, it's just far too confusing for me and there's far too much information for me to obtain and sift through. do I still admire witchcraft? yes do I respect it? yes do I believe it? yes. it's just not something that's for me, I will keep collecting crystals though merely because I like them and do believe they can be helpful for me personally, I like that every crystal has purpose :)
I think magic has to do with vibration, and being on the right medication will raise your vibration, so I'd say it's even easier to do magic when you're in a good place. & I get why people don't like that one side of witchtok, but the way I see it, they are mostly teenagers. The ones who are really into it will research further than tiktok and learn the truth, and when people get into it because of a trend, they might stop learning about it, but they could've exposed someone to it who will stick with it. I wouldn't mind if a reader had to look up the meaning, I think you should just be at the point where you can look at the page and quickly remember what you want to say about that card. But also it's really cool when people are so in tune with their intuition that they can just look at the card and know, that's how I'm trying to be. I hope all the beginners realize they can do everything themselves if they want to. I am curious how you feel about people paying to have a spell done for them by a stranger? That is a LOT of trust going into that!
4:30 I have a tendency to go "shh am baby witch give me time" when people do things like ask my why I don't know much about certain things or why I don't do certain things. Pretty much when they're skeptical of me and think I'm just trying to be cool. I don't mean, oh I'm never going to try learn that because I'm just oh so new. I mean, I am actively learning, I am reading books on stuff and practicing what I can as much as possible but there's only so much I can learn in six months. Pretty much it's just become how I tell people I'm not ready for, or done learning something yet
for the candles, i dont have an opinion on candles for spirits/ancestors/dieties bc i don't use candles for that, but my upg for spells and such is that blowing out the candle is essentially releasing the intention into the universe and basically activating the spell. snuffing out the candle doesn't let the intention/spell go anywhere, it basically just stops the spell. (again, just my upg for my practice, i couldn't care less what other ppl wanna do)
If'n y'all don't have a personal relationship with your materials, set and setting, if your rituals are by rote and and not by Heart, What are you doing raising energy in the first place? Clear intention takes things farther than having 'the right kit'.
My personal opinion is that if you write a book for young witches/beginner witches, you shouldn't exclusivly advertise herbs, oils and candles from your own shop. I understand, you're trying to make money but readers will assume those spells are only to be performed with your stuff and either spend a lot of money or won't start at all. Herbs and Teas from the grocery store are just as effective and way cheaper than most things you'd find in specific witchcraft stores/websites. Bonus to gettinng them from the grocery store (or tea shop) you know for sure that theyre 100% made for human consumption.
As far as I am aware the 'don't blow out your candles' thing is because its disrespectful to smother one elememt with another. If you adhere to the phrase "as within, so without" then by sympathetic magic, blowing out your candles smothers the fire within you that is the source of intention for the candle's associated spell, this is why we let spell candles burn all the way down. Blowing out candles for an energy you want to dismiss would be appropriate (Like a candle lit for protection while its burning or focus while studying). What you do outside, happens inside.
My own UPG on rosemary (I'm very late to this btw lol)-it sort of goes in the same category of how things can overlap (ie using blessings as a method for baneful workings). So instead of doing something obviously baneful, the whole idea of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" comes into play with protecting them and banishing/reversing what's sent toward them by said enemy. There's all your usual nuances in with that too (consent of protection magic for the intended protected party, making sure the intended protected party has all the mundane resources if applicable, etc). I tend to approach situations like that with rosemary that way more for flexibility around the situation first. If the situation calls for more intense workings, rosemary definitely isn't going to cut it for me. Likewise, I don't want to go overboard either and do too much at once-or put others in the crossfire. I'm also slightly zooted, so please forgive if what I'm saying doesn't make sense!😭
I understand creating deep relationships with spirits. However, in a sorcerous (magic for results, not self betterment/relationships) context, paying spirits for services is still entirely valid. I do this kind of magic often AND have relationships with spirits.
i’ve been reading tarot for about a year now, and i mostly go based off the story the card tells me and what pops into my mind. I don’t charge for readings. For myself i’ve found that not focusing sooooo heavily on card meaning has helped me, and focusing on the art in the card and my intuition is what helps me most. I focus on intuition first, “official” card meaning next.
on the topic of being into witchcraft for the aesthetic, i agree with the idea that people can start witchcraft through the aesthetic, and become a real practitioner. however, if someone is really only interested in witchcraft for the aesthetic, a good term instead of witch is "whimsigoth". its the witchy aesthetic with none of the lying about being into the practice

You're absolutely right the witch father/devil Is a part of traditional witchcraft and not necessarily a part of folk practices. I think where people are getting confused is traditional witchcraft is sometimes called folkloric witchcraft, which just means that a lot of traditional whitches pull inspiration from folklore. Which is different than folk practices.

Unpopular opinion, magic isn’t for everyone. It is for anyone, but not everyone. I can’t think of any single thing that would outright preclude someone from being able to practice magic, but that doesn’t mean everyone will get something out of it, or even if they do, that what they get out is worth what they have to put in. I see people (specifically as they see themselves moving out of their ‘beginner’ phase, but not exclusively) get so excited to share their practice, and kinda short-circuit when people just respond with “oh, you do magic? That’s kinda neat, anyways, as I was saying…”. While it is absolutely fantastic that we are gaining visibility and acceptance, it’s not likely we will ever gain the sort of cultural ubiquity of many other religious and spiritual paths and that’s ok. Magicians have almost always historically been on the fringes, whether shunned as hags and villains, accepted and related to as healers and cunning folk, or venerated as wizards and priests. Magic ebbs and flows in its presentation from culture to culture, but even when cultures are suffused with religious and magical thinking, those whose role in life is defined by performing magic still stand out.
Unpopular opinion: I use spells with The God who visited Abraham (Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Baha'i) and Jesus. I mean, they work..... At least for me. But ya, with tools, candles, crystals, and divination.
Also, I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, but i think it's SO important to not lose yourself in your craft. If it's taking priority over every aspect of your life that isn't healthy and breaks from your practice are totally healthy and ok. I also believe it's totally OK for people to have varying levels of passion for the craft as long as they're knowledgeable about what they're doing and learn from mistakes. To some witchcraft is a lifestyle and to some it's just a tool when in need and that's totally ok!

If you ask an herb "what can you help me with" and it answers "banishment, curses and cutting ties", who are you to question it? And yet, if people have been effectively using it for something else for thousands of years, why should you change it? I don't think there's a completely correct answer to it.
my unpopular opinion is that using magic to try and make someone specific fall in love with you is wrong and people should really stop trying to force themselves on people. i see way too many people on tiktok trying to do shit that effects free will when they can be doing other love spells like self love spells
People also forget that even though the peron they're effecting isn't another practitioner, that person still has protection around them ESPEICALLY if they're religous and in contact with a deity. Their spiritual guardians or hell, even their own confidense and the energy of the people they stay around can protect them from being effected by a spell. Spell that effect free will are MUCH MORE DANGEROUS than people give them credit.
the bit about imagination is really saddening for me to hear. being autistic, i have never been able to imagine things, or play pretend, or visualize *anything.* but i always had a really strong and really good gut feeling and i had minor 'visions' as a kid when sleeping of like one random moment within the next week happening at school. like,,, visual pre-deja vu in the dream realm? but, every source i read about our psychic abilities and how EVERYONE starts off with their imagination- it leaves me in the dust. again. i just wish it wasnt so.... hypervisual. i wish it was more inclusive.
There are many types of psychic abilities and not all of them are visual (visual psychic ability can be called clairvoyance). It's totally okay if that's not your thing. If you're really in touch with your gut feelings, perhaps look into clairsentience. And those deja vu experiences make me think of claircognizance. Don't give up - focus on your natural strengths and go from there. I hope this helps even a little.
Well I am a big fan of you Frankie. I am from India a country with a lot of superstition and thousands of years of complex cultural folk heritage. My great uncle was a tantric himself aka witch. What I feel hard is finding and renewing my culture I love . Which so mixed up with Hinduism and general culture it is hard for me to extract the magic from it plus being in a broom closet making it very hard to practice in my parents house getting almost caught in 3 years of practice, you are into folk revival too so I would love to hear an opinion pls answer.
My unpopular opinion is that some degree of challenge or suffering is likely to lead to a more potent practise. I never underestimate anyone, but it is unlikely an aesthetic ,ego driven, person with an easy life , who rehearsed their practice on TikTok and has more Ase than a person with 30 years practice with the Morrigan or Seidr.

As a transplant patient, I take meds twice every day. I also have another person’s body part in me! I feel I am quite in touch with my natural energy. Who knows, perhaps I have a little “extra” energy thrown in! 🤣🤣🤣

My unpopular opinion is that you can learn more about a plant's spiritual uses through researching it's medical and historical use than looking for "witchcraft meanings". (Plus, its a LOT easier to do and makes spiritual properties easier to understand for newbies!)

Yeah I really agree with this. I'm kinda new to witchcraft and it's so annoying that some sources are like 'its all about your own opinions'. I KNOW but if I'm new I can't be expected to be great at energy sensing or to just instantly be able to think off and apply all my personal associations to spells. I think a good example of this it The Green Witch it's a great book but not for beginners. It annoyed me so much how much of it was 'its all about you' SO WHY DID I BUY THIS BOOK. Teach me how to hold a pencil before you teach me how to draw. Give people some guidance

It honestly doesn't help when the Celtic Practice was watered down so much already by Christianity. Gods and Goddesses became Fae or witches, practices became generalized, stolen, or lost. Myths became rewreitten or lost.
Then Wicca comes into play and a lot of Wiccan ideaology involves the idea of mixing pantheons. A normal Pagan tribe didn't mix pantheons (unless that tribe was taken over by another, like Welsh and Celtic. there's an entire story about why the Welsh and Celtic Pantheons work side by side), and that's not an unpopular opinion that's fact. The Mixing of Pantheons only became a thing in recent years, like mixing Roman and Greek, or Norse and Egyptian. Or bringing in the Christian/Jewish ideas of Demons and shoehorning that into another Pantheon of gods. Chances are THERES A REPRESENTATION OF THAT IN THE PANTHEON YOU PRIMARILY WORK WITH.

UPG: Everyone's energy is different and interacts with different energy differently. The reason why some people, using your example, use rosemary in a hex is because of what kind of energy is formed from mixing their energy with rosemary energy.

Unpopular Opinion: You are not obligated to work with your ancestors if your ancestors would despise you doing what you're doing. I am a celtic witch, my ancestors were VERY Christian. I tried to call out to them (because I didn't know), they tried to burn down my house with a tea light on a fireproof plate. The flame got out of the tea light and onto my dresser. There is no physical or scientific way for that flame to jump out of the tea light and cause a fire on the alter cloth. I did a reading with my goddess and it came up with I angered them for being a witch. Not everyone's ancestors are there to protect them, that's a huge general misconception. It doesn't make you a bad person either. It just means you have ancestors who would be willing to watch you burn and you need to look for other spiritual guardians.
I've seen a lot of people get attacked, myself included, on social media for not respecting or reaching out to their ancestors. Not everyone needs to or can call out to their ancestors.
"Oh well, you just didn't go old enough" My ansestors were one of the first pagan tribes to willingly be converted. HOW DEEP WOULD I HAVE TO GO?! It's just not worth it when a grand majority of my ansestors want me dead. I'm not going to respect that.

Hii another chronically Ill witch here and It felt so great to hear Frankie talk about how that may affect your practice. I used to beat myself up that there were some days/weeks I couldn't do things for my practice but I feel so much validated now!!
I'm really happy to hear from other chronically ill witches! I have CFS/ME and I'm autistic, witchcraft is one of my lifelong special interest but I often felt like an imposter because either my physical or mental health was getting in the way of regular practice. I'm in a good place practice-wise at the moment, but I still feel guilty that so many of my witchy interests have to be on the backburner most of the time because I just don't have the energy to do more than the basics. Building relationships with deity is really hard cause I feel like I'm not doing enough/I'm being flaky, I can't remember when I started a spell or what I needed to do at that time, can't follow time-related correspondances because my health is too unpredictable to stick to that kind of commitment... But when I finally sit at the altar or listen to a podcast about Irish paganism or say a little prayer while making dinner, things just feel right and maybe it's enough 😌
The one about tarot readers, looking up the meanings is something that is sometimes needed to get the right message across. Sometimes I find myself being called to look at the book, even though I can usually remember all of the cards, and those are the times when I just need to use the specific wording there. Doesn't make you a bad reader if you need the meanings from a book or on a card!
This ! every card has several meaning especially in oracles. I have a notebook with a bunch of key words and I like to look at the notes for my cards and see what word resonates the most
My unpopular opinion: leaving food out to just sit for offerings is wasteful. If you wish to do an edible offering this is what I do and I have heard of other doing, which is offer for them to either enjoy the food through you while you eat it or offer for them to enjoy it spiritually while you enjoy it physically.

On the whole ascribing “new meanings” to herbs and ingredients:
Basically how I see it is it’s like signs and omens where it’s personal to a level. If white or blue isn’t a calming colour for me why should I use it with calm as an association just cause lots of people agree and/or have agreed over the years. When it comes to herbs it’ll usually come from traits the herb has for me. Like if the leaves of a certain plant feel really icky texture wise to me or feels uncomfortable to hold I’d totally use it in a hex to make someone feel uncomfortable. Or like I love lemons and sour things nothing has ever been too sour for me but the sour stuff I like to eat repels others often so I’ll use lemons/lemon juice as a ward or form of protection for myself.

agreed!! I'm an artist and desginer, so color meanings and properties for me don't always match up with traditional witchcraft associations. The color associations I use are a mash of color theory, magick correspondences, and my personal experience.
A little random note: I'm honestly grateful for the witchcraft community that's on Tik Tok, because I've learned a lot about the craft - particularly about closed practices, colonisation and racism, and personal practice. All the books I read before interacting with the community were incredibly white washed, and were through the 'new age' lense. c:
my unpopular opinion: Sometimes working with a deity can be seen as disrespectful to the people of that religion and culture. Working with/Worshipping a God that belongs to a specific religion should not just be learning about the God themselves but also the religion and culture associated with that God and using that knowledge correctly to respectfully worship the God. For example in Hinduism (bc I'm Indian and most of my Indian friends are Hindu): You can't just work with Ganesh Ji. Ganesh Ji is tied to Hinduism and is a very well known God. He's been worshipped for 1000s of years in Hinduism and you can't just waltz in and begin worshipping him and "working" with him. You have to read about not only him as a God but also about the religion itself, how he is worshipped/respected/how shrines are made for him/how people pray to him/etc, the culture that's tied to him and the history of not only the religion but culture. The people born of that culture who worship those Gods have learned to since they were children. It has been passed down from their ancestors all the way to them. Taking the time to learn how a native worships/works with a Deity is the bare minimum.
edit: I'mma add that this also applied to the concept of spirit guides, guardian angels, chakras, the third eye, kharma, and spirit animals bc these concepts didn't just come out of thin air
When does someone's practice with a deity from Hinduism become non-problematic? For example... For the past year I've been practicing my own way of connecting to Lord Shiva. I pray to him and sing shiv stotram for him daily. I've been interested in Hindu philosophy for a long time and I actively read and research about shaivism, advaita vedanta, yoga and jaiva dharma. I don't know how shiva is worshiped outside of mantras, prayer and lingam statues, so I have no idea if my practice is appropriative or not. UPG: I know the whole blowing-out-candles-is-disrespectful bit is more Wiccan, but I only snuff my candles now if they're on-going spells, spirit or deity candles. I snuff spell candles to "pause" the spell. And for me, blowing deity candles/spirit candles feels disrespectful--it almost conjures the image of spitting in someone's face for me, the action feels similar, so I just don't do it. Candles for prickly wards I will blow out for that reason, because it does conjure that image of spitting in someone's face.

Random but my unpopular opinion is that you don't actually have to know what the differrnt tarot cards meanings. I just look at the pictures in the background (and the picture as a whole) and "know" what it repersents to me. Every time its crazy accurate.

I wish more people would be! I don’t mind disagreeing with people/having different opinions - it shows me a different perspective and helps me grow. My only time that I tend to not listen is if the opinion is actively harmful towards someone!
Speaking of tools: most of the time you already own all of the things you might need in your practice and spellwork. Say, think of the items that hold special meaning to you.
An example: when I was like 10 or 11, my mom gave me a small compact mirror - a plastic thingie the size of my palm that she got in a newspaper store, or maybe it was a "buy a perfume, get a mirror" offer in the local makeup shop. Anyways, I've used it for scrying ever since, and I'm 32 now - it's been a lot of time. I immediately kinda resonated with this mirror and it goes everywhere with me. No fancy crystal orbs or anything.
Same with crystals - sometimes that pebble you've kept in your jewelry bag since you were six will be your best artifact for grounding.
That pendant you've always liked? Yup, can serve as a pendulum.
Some of the best spells in my practice came with just a piece of paper or a bay leaf from the kitchen; a pen; and a lighter. Make a sigil, charge it, draw it and burn the paper/leaf. And you're done. No need to go to the occult store or order stuff from Amazon.
Don't get me wrong, I love my fancy tools, I have a collection of Tarot and oracle decks, a few crystals, an amethyst pendulum... But they're not a necessity! I bought and use them because I genuinely like them, and not because any practice without them would be impossible. Because it would not be.
unpopular opinion: a lot of people forget that newer witches are NEW like they are still learning don't be too hard on them for not knowing something or making a mistake
As a pharmacy tech and also a beginner herbalist and witch, many many medicines comes from herbs and traditional remedies. They take the active ingredient from those herbs and make them into medicine which is then tested and tested again and then tested for a third time. Ex, saint John’s wort can and will lower blood sugar, it’s active ingredient is used in diabetes medication. Which is why people who take those meds can’t use saint John’s wort, because they can go into a low. So saying that it takes away from your natural energy is saying if you use an herbal remedy you won’t be able to connect to your natural energy. I do think it’s pretty ableist.
unpopular: i personally love revisiting the basics. MOREOVER…. “basic witches” by jaya saxena and jess zimmerman was surprisingly good and underrated. just my opinion

my unpopular opinion is you don't have to do shadowwork everyday, I believe you should take your time. Especially to process information you may have come across when healing whether you struggle with mental illnesses or not
I would say definitely do NOT do shadow work everyday! Is this an unpopular opinion? It’s exhausting, and yes, you definitely need time to process/integrate.
Totally agree! Shadowwork is not an every day task, it's a hard and slow process that is better to do on days when you're mentally prepared for it. I also think it's important to make sure you have time in the day for self care after a session because of how draining it can be. And my final thoughts is that counseling/therapy is shadowwork.

The ancestor one really surprised me. I come from 2 opposing branches, one being oppressors, the other oppressed. One side was in the slave trade in the 18th century, the others were pillaged, oppressed and enslaved by colonising forces.
I have only ever done ancestor work with the oppressed side of the family. It is the side of the family that I am close to, that I relate with and also the ones who have a magical tradition.
I have rejected the colonising side completely. It is also the toxic side if the family (go figure) and the ones I have not seen since the age of 10.
Thinking of doing ancestor work with this side that almost feel severed off at this point feels difficult.

There’s a short book called “Ritual” by Malidoma Some Patrice. It’s very short but soooo good and it talks about why things are better left hidden. It’s so cool.
I know personally, spell jars are the spells I do as I am being tested for adhd. I get random spurts where the more intensive spells I’d like to do, the timing isn’t right, so spell jars are my go-to. I’d like to be able to do more intensive work, but the way my brain works at the moment, it’s the best way I can do it. Also, the “casting a circle” for me used to be a whole thing: salt, incense, the whole shabang. Now it’s simply using lavender, lemon, lemongrass, and mint oils and just sprinkle them around me and my working space. I try to practice at my altar, but with my back, sometimes sitting at my desk is easier

I agree 100000% I haven't been diagnosed yet (no affordable resources unfortunately) but there's a lot of evidence to support that I likely have adhd especially with all the testing my daughter is getting for it (and autism). I don't have the mental capability to sit and focus for a long time on spellwork etc. I do "lazy" spells like simmer pots and spell jars or money bowls
Unpopular opinion thing: stop scaring younger witches out of working with spirits. Sure, you should inform them of the dangers but also tell them the benefits, and how to safely communicate with spirits. I started spirit working before I was a witch, when I was verrrry young (like, 8 years old), and I didn’t have problems. I don’t see the use of scaring young people out of doing things that aren’t exactly scary.
I remember hearing about the blowing out candles in Wicca for the Solitary Practitioner (I think that's the title) by Scott Cunningham. Which is Wiccan, but it was for a time one of the most widely available witchcraft for beginners books around, and combined with the witchcraft=Wicca misinformation that spread around the same time made that one very popular.
I also read about it in a Cunningham book (Earth Air Fire Water). It seemed important to him. But I always found it odd

I still use the God who visited Abraham and Jesus for spells. And they still work. I mean I grew up Christian but I'm a witch now. I literally did a old trauma removal spell by rubbing neroli oil clockwise on my Sacral Chakra and I asked them to remove the old trauma. And It worked. But this is controversial lol. The Abrahamic God can trigger people.
As someone who has very real and often distressing memory issues and has been into tarot for over 3 years at this point, I have had to accept that I won't always be able to remember all the meanings of every card. It's perfectly okay to need the booklet, or another reference book. Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but ableist ones like this should be challenged. If YOU don't want to continue tarot bc YOU don't remember all the meanings, that's fine, but don't tell someone else they can't, regardless of if they have any disability or not.
As a chaos practitioner I don’t really keep a book of shadows because it is almost counter intuitive to my path (in my opinion). But when it comes to deity work and plant spirits I write everything down because that, for me, is the part of my practice that is important to document.
I think its so funny when talking about medication and witchcraft ppl say like it blocks you inner whatever or idfk because in my case, i have depression and i can not function without my medication like how am i gonna conect with my powers if cant keep myself alive?
About witchcrafting without tools: It doesn’t have to be intention only just because you’re not using fancy tools. I like to use tools but a lot of the time I don’t. I often trace protective sigils on my front door and walls using my finger 🤷🏼♀️ Or take some small token of gratitude, like food, and put in a place of significance out in nature, along with a plea for some kind of help and/or just a sign of respect for the spirits of that place. A lot of spirit work can be done without tools. I have an altar in the spirit realm where I travel to do witchcraft when I’m out and about or don’t want to do the work in the physical realm. That takes practice, but it isn’t any less real and no tools are needed.
Words can be incredibly powerful too: spoken, sung, whispered, written… look at what words do in our daily life and has done throughout human history and tell me they can’t move mountains. So yeah. No need for tools in witchcraft.
And a lot of the more powerful tools are free. Some of my favourite herbs to work with are common weeds: nettles and mugwort can be found in cities around the world and are awesome. To make moonwater you just need a small amount of water (tap, rain, melted snow, stream, bottled…) and someplace to put it. Salt can be found in most kitchens, and no one will look at you funny for keeping a couple of salt packets from McDonalds in your purse or room. Pen and paper don’t have to be fancy to work for sigils, you can use any old pen and some scrap paper and do wonderful magic.

Unpopular opinion/frustrations: Sometimes people don't have a strong percentage of one place. My mom is from Puerto Rico, so I call myself Puerto Rican American, since my dad is white (mixed Western European) and I lived mostly in California. On my dad's side, I have at least Irish, Italian, and Norse (Swedish/Danish) and sometimes it is hard to know who to connect with (and I am lucky to know). So based on ancestry, three of the main big European pantheons (and most likely Greek due to the Italian side being from Naples). I also see gods and spirits coming into being through belief, kinda of like give and take, as shown in Discworld and Good Omens.
To add to that, what about working with the deities of the land you live on? (Living in North America, but with ancestors from Scandinavia and the British Isles.) I always thought that would be fine, but these days it would be cultural appropriation/co-opting a closed practice.
As someone who works 12 hour shifts everytime i work and work a full time job with other parts of my life that need to be dealt with… i WISH i could take more time for spells, my practice etc. and i had to finally listen to what i was being told and that was being told “hey its ok do what you need and in your way”. So now I’ve adapted forms of practice into things i have to do super often anyways.
I think when issuing herbs for other uses, you have to play with it’s common meaning. Let’s use rosemary as an example. If used against an @buser, it is thereby protecting by causing h@rm to the @buser.

In no way do I mean that food offerings aren't great (I use them myself), but I feel like sooo many people don't understand that there are other things you can do/give. Art (one of my personal favorites), playing music/creating a playlist for that deity, spending time outside, wearing their colors, even just saying thank you to them is good.

So much yes for so many! Those of us who were teens the mid to late 90s remember the movie The Craft. For me this is what got me into witchcraft then Wicca then a more grounded for me practice rooted in my own traditions. While films and such definitely warp a topic or subject, many times to its detriment, sometimes those distortions can lead to wanting to learn more. Which can, sometimes, lead to a more realistic in your face, rose glasses off, view of a topic. Hope that makes sense! Also love the one about imagination!
my unpopular-ish opinion is that most resources are super over sensationalized and google is becoming much less reliable. There are a lot of websites and blogs that just "yeah you can copy my homework but change it a lil so they don't notice" off eachother, to the point of unhelpfulness. Additionally, many have been noticing that google just shows you like 7 ads at the top of your search results and sometimes just straight up ignores most of your search. Finding information on a specific topic leads mostly to stuff thats vaguely related or has similar keywords, and most you'll end up reading is information which has been regurgitated by 5 different blogs beforehand. I think genuinely everyone would benefit from just picking up a couple of books, watching youtubers like you or olivia, and going outside and figuring shit out yourself. In witchcraft i think that no source is more accurate than yourself, at least when it comes to stuff like correspondence, signs and spirit work. This does exclude history, toxicity, and culture though because those are things that are either based on objective truth or simply not something you can access or have all the knowledge for to practice correctly and safely.
I've found a fair of people in western witchcraft communities that say "it's wrong to think demons are evil" which I think is really weird because thinking demons aren't evil is an opinion, and while it's a totally valid opinion to have so is the belief that demons are evil.

13:18 This was told to me by an Indigenous friend, now keep in mind I do not live in the USA so it could be different there. The reason that you don't blow out candles, or anything for that matter, (like if you were starting a fire you would fan it instead of blowing on it) is because your breath is part of your Spirit, and when you blow on things you are giving away parts of your Spirit. Your Spirit is a precious and personal thing, therefore you should not give it away. That is what she told me, I personally still tend to blow out candles, but I figured I'd share in case anyone was interested.

There are absolutely outliers, but seeing people like you, thathoneywitch, and others really helped me when I first started looking into the craft and paganism. thank you for mentioning chronic illness and disability. I have Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis so I am in pain literally all the time. I have to choose my lower pain days to get spells done and to practice my craft more. sometimes on high pain days I can do something simple like research or reading but sometimes I can’t even do that because of the brain fog that comes with the fibro. It took me a while to accept that I was still valid in my practice if I went long periods without being able to do anything related to my craft.

I think most people I’ve noticed on the online witchy spheres I inhabit (which is mainly reddit and yt) generally hold the opinion that you are the only tool you really need, it’s not that the opinion is unpopular it just only seems to come out when someone is asking “do I need xyz to do this”, so perhaps, people need to make more mentions and content around it, like if someone is asking for advice on protection, we could bring up creating psychic shields and the power of visualizing in magic more often than we do as a community maybe 🤷♀️

8:31 I don't post my practice and not a lot of people know about it. But I do love the aesthetic of it, it sort of gives me some power like decorating my altar, and the pretty cristals or even black nails. It is not just rooted on that but it certainly makes me feel powerful and like it's mine.
I agree with your take about "everything happens for a reason" in that sometimes shitty things happen and it means nothing. I think I tend to lean into less about the actual thing has no reason but "your" reaction has meaning...does that make sense? I think an example to explain would be, you got a flat tire. Not because you did a bad thing, or because you needed to meet the tow truck person who is your "soulmate" because sometimes bad things happen. But maybe you can take the lesson of needing to be more patient, you can take the lesson of learning to roll with unexpected things, you can take the lesson of maintaining better car maintenance. Does that make sense to someone else? The event doesn't mean anything but what you do or react to the event does.
Not an unpopular opinion but wanted to share my experience with witchcraft
I gave up. why? because 1. I can't do a ritual everyday, I can't do something consistently and it is usually because I forget 2. I don't feel greatly connected to witchcraft, I've tried hard to keep up the work and connect with my abilities and craft but I feel like I never gained anything out of it or nothing ever happened. 3. I've found it to be far too watered down and was never sure what was right or wrong, some said you need tools, others said you don't, it's just far too confusing for me and there's far too much information for me to obtain and sift through. do I still admire witchcraft? yes do I respect it? yes do I believe it? yes. it's just not something that's for me, I will keep collecting crystals though merely because I like them and do believe they can be helpful for me personally, I like that every crystal has purpose :)
I think magic has to do with vibration, and being on the right medication will raise your vibration, so I'd say it's even easier to do magic when you're in a good place. & I get why people don't like that one side of witchtok, but the way I see it, they are mostly teenagers. The ones who are really into it will research further than tiktok and learn the truth, and when people get into it because of a trend, they might stop learning about it, but they could've exposed someone to it who will stick with it.
I wouldn't mind if a reader had to look up the meaning, I think you should just be at the point where you can look at the page and quickly remember what you want to say about that card. But also it's really cool when people are so in tune with their intuition that they can just look at the card and know, that's how I'm trying to be. I hope all the beginners realize they can do everything themselves if they want to. I am curious how you feel about people paying to have a spell done for them by a stranger? That is a LOT of trust going into that!
4:30 I have a tendency to go "shh am baby witch give me time" when people do things like ask my why I don't know much about certain things or why I don't do certain things. Pretty much when they're skeptical of me and think I'm just trying to be cool. I don't mean, oh I'm never going to try learn that because I'm just oh so new. I mean, I am actively learning, I am reading books on stuff and practicing what I can as much as possible but there's only so much I can learn in six months.
Pretty much it's just become how I tell people I'm not ready for, or done learning something yet
for the candles, i dont have an opinion on candles for spirits/ancestors/dieties bc i don't use candles for that, but my upg for spells and such is that blowing out the candle is essentially releasing the intention into the universe and basically activating the spell. snuffing out the candle doesn't let the intention/spell go anywhere, it basically just stops the spell. (again, just my upg for my practice, i couldn't care less what other ppl wanna do)

My personal opinion is that if you write a book for young witches/beginner witches, you shouldn't exclusivly advertise herbs, oils and candles from your own shop.
I understand, you're trying to make money but readers will assume those spells are only to be performed with your stuff and either spend a lot of money or won't start at all.
Herbs and Teas from the grocery store are just as effective and way cheaper than most things you'd find in specific witchcraft stores/websites.
Bonus to gettinng them from the grocery store (or tea shop) you know for sure that theyre 100% made for human consumption.
As far as I am aware the 'don't blow out your candles' thing is because its disrespectful to smother one elememt with another. If you adhere to the phrase "as within, so without" then by sympathetic magic, blowing out your candles smothers the fire within you that is the source of intention for the candle's associated spell, this is why we let spell candles burn all the way down. Blowing out candles for an energy you want to dismiss would be appropriate (Like a candle lit for protection while its burning or focus while studying).
What you do outside, happens inside.
My own UPG on rosemary (I'm very late to this btw lol)-it sort of goes in the same category of how things can overlap (ie using blessings as a method for baneful workings). So instead of doing something obviously baneful, the whole idea of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" comes into play with protecting them and banishing/reversing what's sent toward them by said enemy. There's all your usual nuances in with that too (consent of protection magic for the intended protected party, making sure the intended protected party has all the mundane resources if applicable, etc).
I tend to approach situations like that with rosemary that way more for flexibility around the situation first. If the situation calls for more intense workings, rosemary definitely isn't going to cut it for me. Likewise, I don't want to go overboard either and do too much at once-or put others in the crossfire.
I'm also slightly zooted, so please forgive if what I'm saying doesn't make sense!😭
The thing about ancestors is not all of us know the truth of our own families and some are adopted and dont even know it...
I understand creating deep relationships with spirits. However, in a sorcerous (magic for results, not self betterment/relationships) context, paying spirits for services is still entirely valid. I do this kind of magic often AND have relationships with spirits.
i’ve been reading tarot for about a year now, and i mostly go based off the story the card tells me and what pops into my mind. I don’t charge for readings. For myself i’ve found that not focusing sooooo heavily on card meaning has helped me, and focusing on the art in the card and my intuition is what helps me most. I focus on intuition first, “official” card meaning next.

You're absolutely right the witch father/devil Is a part of traditional witchcraft and not necessarily a part of folk practices. I think where people are getting confused is traditional witchcraft is sometimes called folkloric witchcraft, which just means that a lot of traditional whitches pull inspiration from folklore. Which is different than folk practices.

Unpopular opinion, magic isn’t for everyone. It is for anyone, but not everyone. I can’t think of any single thing that would outright preclude someone from being able to practice magic, but that doesn’t mean everyone will get something out of it, or even if they do, that what they get out is worth what they have to put in. I see people (specifically as they see themselves moving out of their ‘beginner’ phase, but not exclusively) get so excited to share their practice, and kinda short-circuit when people just respond with “oh, you do magic? That’s kinda neat, anyways, as I was saying…”. While it is absolutely fantastic that we are gaining visibility and acceptance, it’s not likely we will ever gain the sort of cultural ubiquity of many other religious and spiritual paths and that’s ok. Magicians have almost always historically been on the fringes, whether shunned as hags and villains, accepted and related to as healers and cunning folk, or venerated as wizards and priests. Magic ebbs and flows in its presentation from culture to culture, but even when cultures are suffused with religious and magical thinking, those whose role in life is defined by performing magic still stand out.
Unpopular opinion: I use spells with The God who visited Abraham (Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Baha'i) and Jesus. I mean, they work..... At least for me. But ya, with tools, candles, crystals, and divination.

Also, I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, but i think it's SO important to not lose yourself in your craft. If it's taking priority over every aspect of your life that isn't healthy and breaks from your practice are totally healthy and ok. I also believe it's totally OK for people to have varying levels of passion for the craft as long as they're knowledgeable about what they're doing and learn from mistakes. To some witchcraft is a lifestyle and to some it's just a tool when in need and that's totally ok!

19:30 I think it depends on your view of witchcraft, energy and magic. Do you prefer to follow the rules and guidance of the old ways or do you look upon the world with eyes unbiased? If you ask an herb "what can you help me with" and it answers "banishment, curses and cutting ties", who are you to question it? And yet, if people have been effectively using it for something else for thousands of years, why should you change it? I don't think there's a completely correct answer to it.
my unpopular opinion is that using magic to try and make someone specific fall in love with you is wrong and people should really stop trying to force themselves on people.
i see way too many people on tiktok trying to do shit that effects free will when they can be doing other love spells like self love spells
People also forget that even though the peron they're effecting isn't another practitioner, that person still has protection around them ESPEICALLY if they're religous and in contact with a deity. Their spiritual guardians or hell, even their own confidense and the energy of the people they stay around can protect them from being effected by a spell. Spell that effect free will are MUCH MORE DANGEROUS than people give them credit.

the bit about imagination is really saddening for me to hear. being autistic, i have never been able to imagine things, or play pretend, or visualize *anything.* but i always had a really strong and really good gut feeling and i had minor 'visions' as a kid when sleeping of like one random moment within the next week happening at school. like,,, visual pre-deja vu in the dream realm? but, every source i read about our psychic abilities and how EVERYONE starts off with their imagination- it leaves me in the dust. again. i just wish it wasnt so.... hypervisual. i wish it was more inclusive.
There are many types of psychic abilities and not all of them are visual (visual psychic ability can be called clairvoyance). It's totally okay if that's not your thing. If you're really in touch with your gut feelings, perhaps look into clairsentience. And those deja vu experiences make me think of claircognizance. Don't give up - focus on your natural strengths and go from there. I hope this helps even a little.

I am from India a country with a lot of superstition and thousands of years of complex cultural folk heritage. My great uncle was a tantric himself aka witch. What I feel hard is finding and renewing my culture I love . Which so mixed up with Hinduism and general culture it is hard for me to extract the magic from it plus being in a broom closet making it very hard to practice in my parents house getting almost caught in 3 years of practice, you are into folk revival too so I would love to hear an opinion pls answer.
My unpopular opinion is that some degree of challenge or suffering is likely to lead to a more potent practise. I never underestimate anyone, but it is unlikely an aesthetic ,ego driven, person with an easy life , who rehearsed their practice on TikTok and has more Ase than a person with 30 years practice with the Morrigan or Seidr.
I think spell jars helps the ones that aren't "there" yet 🤔

For the blowing out candles thing. I blow out all of mine except my deity candles, especially Hestia because it was seen as disrespectful in ancient Greece to put out her fire. (She let's me snuff out her candles bc otherwise it is a fire hazard lol 😂)
