I got in a taxi the other day, on the way to meet my mates to get on the coach to go to T in the Park, and the bass player here, is now a taxi driver! We had a crazy conversation about him leaving school to tour with Billy J. Kramer and the Dekotas, he's a great guy, thought it was worth sharing!
THERE CLASSY COOL. THEM AND MERSEY BEATS WITH JOHN. AND THE HONEY COMBS ARE TOP CLASS YOUR RIGHT ALL THESE WERE HITS HE WAS ON ED SULLIVAN. AND POLL MUSIC AWARDS. 1964 WAS BIG YEAR FOR THEM.
My favorite tele tone, ever. Mr. Green was a tele man to the end supporting Bryan Ferry and Sir Paul among others. Oh, and The Cruel Sea is impossibly amazing. A gift to the world!
This is from the T.A.M.I. show in October 1964. Santa Monica Civic Center. Most of those in attendance were the students from Santa Monica High School. Chuck Berry, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Rolling Stones and the great James Brown all performed at the T.A.M.I. show. One of the greatest concerts of all time---to have all this talent together at one time. The concert was made into a movie and you can get it on DVD. Also, the Beach Boys performed at this show.
William Maxwell , I saw the Rolling Stones concert at the Memorial Auditorium Louisville Kentucky Nov. 11 ,1964.Brian Jones did not appear with them however. Mick Jagger announced that Jones was at a hospital recovering from pneumonia before the set.
Wrecking Crew members were the house band . Lenny Bruce and Frank Zappa were both in attendance , Zappa in the audience and Lenny as a guest of Phil Spector. Glen Campbell on Guitar and Leon Russell on piano , he with a slightly more coiffed Billy J. hair do....
Duff Baker Saw an interview with the Beatles where one of them said,( I think it was George), that when they first met Billy J, here was this cool guy with really long hair...lol
The Lennon-McCartney team gave as many songs to Billy as they did to Peter and Gordon. They were writing so many and tossing the scraps to their colleagues.
This is a Lennon/McCartney tune that the Beatles never recorded. It was given to one of Brian Epstein's other groups under management... Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas.
Great live performance of this forgotten gem. I read somewhere he struggled with recording the high note at the end, so the composer of the song who happened to be in the control room and goes by the name of Paul McCartney actually went in and recorded it himself. Which was buried in the mix, but if you listen carefully and especially with headphones you can her Paul's voice, actually!
In a way his singing reminds me of Bryan Ferry, especially when the song starts. I wish these hairstyles would come back....great song and so rare to see live concert footage from these days. Thanks.....
we all screamed during performances. it just was. honestly, I love his voice, love that song, and he seems to be having a lot of fun on stage, in fact........I see a few jersey boys moves hinted at!
John Lennon was particularly annoyed with all the screaming during that era. He couldn’t understand why girls would come to the shows and not listen to anything they were playing.
The Dakotas were a great band not much is ever said about that fact but for that time 1964 they were among the best rock bands out there love Billy J as well. The guitar solo on window is killer great drumming as well.
TAMI Show, the guitar player in the background at 0:39 strumming along with the Band is Glen Campbell and right at 1:00 see Leon Russell at the piano . Better shots of these two and the other Wrecking Crew who were the TAMI House band can be seen in The James Brown and Rolling Stones segements...
I never realized that Mick Green played in this band - the man was a legend. BJK and the lads are in top here - there's a real buzz going! Sounds like a Paul Mac song - there "throwaways" were hits.
Billy was certainly an underrated member of the British Invasion. His critics, for some reason, wrote him off as just a "pretty boy" singer like Fabian. He didn't deserve the bad commentary. I had three of his LPs... and there wasn't a bad song on any of them.
the nuclear fusion of Lennon Mc Cartney bubbled pot over, with this gem finding its way into the hands of BJK and the D's. The screaming audience shows that the genius of the creation could explode beyond the lab walls.......
A lot going on in this video.... Mick Green on the white Telecaster playing some great riffs. Glen Campbell in the background on the bandstand strumming away.
Mick Green is only playing rhythm. The real quality guitarist has been kept out of shot Mike Maxfield. I believe Kramer had an issue, probably jealous, with the brilliant Maxfield, who wrote and played The Cruel Sea made at least a £1 million from the song as it was a surf anthem over in the states. To this day no one can come even close to the guitar skill Maxfield displayed on that track. He was the first one I heard playing root and octave strings on a 6 string. Everyone was puzzled as they thought as the melody lines were played on a 12 string. It was a neat trick that fooled many into thinking there was a 12string and 6 string involved.
Despite the screaming, etc., you really his voice well here, without all the recording tricks. I'd venture he was a better singer than John Lennon. What a talent, good stage presence too. THANKS for posting this.
George Martin admitted he did not think Billy J had a great voice. He would pluck a piano wire to help Billy J hit the high notes. You can see he is struggling to hit the high note at the end of the song. Still Billy J & The Dakotas did deserve their place in the pantheon of British rock & roll.
You can't compare other Brit bands with The Beatles. It isn't fair to them. Judge them on what they were not what The Beatles evolved into. I think Peter Noone once said something like, "They were changing music and we were just trying to have a few hits." Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas were a good Brit Invasion band. Nothing more and nothing less.
The British Invasion was not just the most important music in my life at 13 and 14 but rathe THE most important thing in my life. For us still born American youth it was a gift from above and unknowing as we were at the time we didn't make a differentiation between The Stones, Herman, Kinks , Freddie or Tom Jones or Ian Whitcomb for that matter. Paul wrote the song by himself. Billy J. fizzled out probably because he was viewed as more of a crooner when that era was coming to an end. All 4 of The Beatles had pizazz as a group. That was the difference. The Beatles evolved well into the psychedelic era. They almost invented it.
Billy j always makes me laugh as he stoops to sing. Why doesn't he just raise the mic? Also the guitarist on the right is really a Thunderbirds puppet ?

How did you know he was the bassist?
only a minority of stage stars make good money..then & now
Wow what story love to meet him. Was that tall blond. ?
That would be Robin McDonald from Scotland. RIP.
I was at this concert/ filming in 1964~ What a show!
What a memory to have! = ) Halcyon days!
Great stuff
How’d you know about it? I was around then and the SM Civic wasn’t that far away!
Did you film any of it
Cool ... is this the TAMI show?
I love this tune. People like to knock Billy J Kramer, but the tunes he was given were big hits and they still sound fine today.
Station ofdreams Chad and Jeremy did a version of this song and is not too shabby.
I don't see why people criticize him.
@@QueenFan12 it's the recent years, people keep saying he should have retired years ago but back in the day, like this performance, no problem
That's because they were written by ...THE BEATLES.....👍🏻

I just found this n I agree It’s knock out good
And a couple Pirates line-ups! Love this sound.
Loved Billy J and the Dakotas. Their material was mostly written by Lennon & McCartney so it was fIrst caliber. It was rhythmic and dancible!

Mick Green on guitar-Top man RIP.
Mick was the model for Wilko Johnson in his Pirates days
One of the few Merseybeat singers who combed his hair back 50's-style as opposed to the mop-top style.

Beautiful scraps though.
Funny how their scraps are still better than most modern a-sides.
@yossilbowie Some of their scraps are better then their own songs
@@GeoffreyGentryMusicthat’s the case with the Beatles. Their B-side throwaways could be hits today.

That’s actually a pretty good live performance...
Yes years laternot many are worth. Listening to its affects
The Dakotas were very good musicians in their own right.
Mick Green joined as guitarist and Robin MacDonald moved to bass and their sound exploded.
never understood the screaming and yelling ..why would a girl scream and yell and even faint ..big mystery

Billy J. Kramer with The Dakotas perform the charming Lennon/McCartney song "From A Window".
A magical time
nice faster version. was a bit disappointed from the lp version since i was so use to this live version.
A very sombre Mick Green on guitar!
Well he was in Johnny Kidd & The Pirates , perhaps more rough and ready than merseybeat.
The drummer is great
Nice going guys! well done.

The cruel sea “sound” was George Martin playing piano along with Mike Maxfield, not him alone.

kick ass drummer
That was Tony Bookbinder, who almost got the job of replacing Pete Best in the Beatles! Had Tony joined, he would have been the only Jewish Beatle.
He could have easily been the Beatles new drummer . Great talent .
goood

where are the other songs from TAMI
Mick Green on Guitar
Even though he's on rhythm, he chops that guitar as if he were still with Johnny Kidd!
How come he never did the solo

Elkie Brooks' brother on the drums...
He did a little Cliff Richard jig there :)
Lennon & McCartney original Given to Billy J Kramer

How come green didn't do the middle eight ?
No digital tuners, or even stage monitors.. And everyone's in tune, as real musicians and singers had to be then, before digital fakery...
Whoever did the camera work did not do a very good job you didn’t even see the other guitar player half the time who the hell did this
Billy was good in those days. Not so keen on his live performances from the 80s onwards.
I know they always gave each other credit, but my sense is this is a McCartney lyric. Is it?
Paul wrote the song by himself. Billy J. fizzled out probably because he was viewed as more of a crooner when that era was coming to an end. All 4 of The Beatles had pizazz as a group. That was the difference. The Beatles evolved well into the psychedelic era. They almost invented it.
Always get Billy J Kramer and P J Proby. I think Proby was the cooler one.
Suenan re bien en vivo. Mejor que sus discos de estudio.
Who wrote this John or Paul ?
Paul
How the heck did Billy get all those songs from Lennon and McCartney? Wondering 😮
Brian Epstein managed both acts.
Less than 2 minutes...that's motoring
Epstein must have put him up to that gay waving bit. Sheesh...
you're gay
Lead singer obviously can't dance, so he had to do something in the way of movement. So, he waves.
