That's wild I knew Eric Oswald from Guitar Center in Akron OH. I worked with him so much that I went over to his place to help setup some recording gear. He was really proud of his brother and a genuine nice guy. Never mentioned that he played this intro.
WOW. I haven’t heard or even thought of that intro in years. I remember hearing it for the first time back when the album came out. My uncle who taught me how to play guitar heard me rewinding and playing it over and over again. He came in my room and asked who that was. He knew who warrant was but he was confused why that piece was mixed in with the warrant songs. He then stole my new warrant tape from me and in his car it went. Within a week he was sitting in his chair in the living room watching married with children and cheers as always and he was playing the intro to Uncle Toms cabin exact. I never learned how to play it and I regret it. He passed away a few years back and I was given his Martin. I think I’m gonna learn it and play it on his Martin
Bro, I just paused here 45 seconds in to say BRAVO SIR! I really loved that intro as a young man, and had kind of forgotten how great it was. From what I remember of it you nailed it, as usual. You legit inspire me to keep playing guitar at 52.
Great episode! The only thing harder than playing it might be painstakingly tabbing it out and you accomplished just that. Now I'm obligated to tackle this behemoth. Wish me luck and thank you!
Seems like I remember hearing that the album was originally supposed to be called "Uncle Tom's Cabin". But the record company wanted a single so Jani went home and wrote "Cherry Pie" in one night. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is a fantastic piece of song writing and is by far my favorite Warrant song.
According to Jani, he wrote it in just a few minutes. Like, on a pizza box. He HATED being known as the "Cherry Pie Guy." I mean, yeah, I'm sure he hated it all the way to the bank, but still, I get where he's coming from.
It's a real shame the record company made Jani write another song to be the "hit" from that album. I've been to many Warrant shows and Uncle Tom's Cabin ALWAYS get the crowd going. It's their best song.
@The-Art-of-Guitar Part of the reason that it's so hard, was that Eric had just sat down and he was warming up. After he was done, he told them he was ready. They told him that they got what they needed with that warm up,
Same with the intro to Love Song by Tesla. We were gonna do it but decided it was a buzz kill for a cover band in a bar setting. Some might have appreciated it but most would have gone to get drinks, go pee, or just talk to their friends. lol

I remember when my dad showed me this song, “Cherry Pie” was the only song I knew at the time and I had a hard time believing that this was by that same band just because of how heavy “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is
I went to a Motley Crue concert in 1989. Warrant opened and I did not think Warrant was going to be any good from what I heard on the radio but wow they rocked 🤘🏼 Motley Crue blew the roof off though.🔥🔥
Thanks for this man! Been wanting to learn this intro for a long time. Have you done a video for the intro to "Crazy On You" by Heart? If not, would love to see that one too 👍
No matter what song I hear from"Warrant" I always think about "Bobby Brown" in those Short shorts. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" had a great story line to it. They were a lot better band than what they got credit for.
I'm 35 and growing up my mom, who was always playing music, would wake me up for school playing this song as loud as the big stack speakers would go. She played either the Cherry Pie album or Def Leopard Hysteria or Meatloaf Bat Out of hell and we would sing a long as we got ready. Uncle Tom's Cabin was and still is my favorite 80s song (I know it's not 80s technically but they're an 80s band and it has that 80s sound). God, I miss those times. I miss you Mom 😢
Probably one of the best songs of that era! Damn I miss you Jani. You were severely underrated and under appreciated! I actually mourn his death and what we lost talent wise more often than I care to admit.
I actually went out of my way to learn this when it came out. Same as Love Song. Thats really what attracted me to both of those songs was the acoustic intros.
I'd forgotten the first into on this song, but the "2nd intro" is really memorable. If bands wanted to do both intros it could be a cool way to come back from a break between sets -- you wouldn't have to worry about losing the dancers. It would help to have 2 guitarists so the first player could swap from acoustic back to their main guitar, unless they had an acoustic mounted on a stand for this. If you played it on electric, I wounder if it would go better with compression off and then using single coils or maybe some unpotted PAF style to help with the picking dynamics.
Thanks for the tab , I’ve never been able to find any that looked close. Now I got something I’ve always wanted to learn to work on for the rest of my life. Even if I never get it all it’s got so many cool licks in it maybe if I take it a bite at a time eventually I’ll be able to get through it.
My band Rock Godz plays this song almost every show for the last 12 years, and you're right. We don't play the intro. I've actually never attempted to learn it. The reasons you state are exactly true. Killing the dance floor is probably the first reason. 2nd reason, I play the lead guitar, so I don't have an acoustic in my hand, although my lead singer plays acoustic on it. We double up the parts. Makes it sound really fat. It does look difficult as hell, though. I'll see if I can find the video of Rock Godz playing Uncle Tom's Cabin at Mid-summer Music Fest in 2023 and I'll post it here. As always, you totally wail on the guitar, Buddy! Outstanding!
2:47 The underlying tone is from a banjo. Those of us from the south can identify that distinctively, and the notes sit around the G# tuning of the song, something that only takes tuning the banjo upa half step from G.
I have tried a couple of times to tackle this on acoustic, going lick by lick. As a hard rocker with a knack for chicken picking wherever I feel like it (even to pull off some Nuno licks easier) it feels like a natural idea to go medieval with the pick. I should add I haven't got this one already and I feel not each part is as essential as the other (I can't nail down those fifth fret hammer ons consistently just because it feels awkward and wrong, it explains well if this truly is a warm up jam so there's a double take by the player). Anyhow with this bag of information I will be more equipped to get to this goal. And I promise afterwards I will start to woodshed to get all the parts in Triumph's Fight the Good Fight in the right order, so here's a request for an analysis on how that song variates itself in a dizzying way, at least for us lesser players. Thank you for the video.
I've always loved that entry. At first I was astounded that Jani Lane could play something like that, but that's kinda the way the music video made it seem at the time. Years later I discovered it was his brother. I would love for you to do a breakdown of what's actually happening in that intro musically. It's just so odd. It sounds like someone just kinda noodling around, yet at the same time very complex and intentional. What a great intro! Thanks for covering it!
wow what an amazing video. this intro has always been a total enigma to me. it's so weirdly atonal and arhythmical but it sounds so beautiful and i never understood how it worked :) thanks!
Thanks for posting this video up !! I’m not a guitar player only a friend to Jani and love seeing his name brought up and Warrant songs. My Honduran wife’s favorite song is Uncle Toms Cabin 🇺🇸
I practice acoustic every day, I play Mr. Speed by Kiss and it gets me loose, Over The Hills and far away by Zeppelin is fun and helps the fingers get tough too.
This song and the intro especially are one of my favorite pieces of music ever! I’ve always wanted to learn it but it looks incredibly hard😅 Thanks for making this video!
Loved it when it came out and still do. I could be wrong, but I think I remember reading back then that Jani Lane's brother played that lick on the record. I would rather hear this song a thousand times than most of the songs today one time.
I came up with a “condensed” version that covers the most recognizable runs. I play that live because I noticed that folks think that I’m just noodling if I do the whole thing. Pretty much reason #2 you have listed here.
It starts out with what sounds like a 6 string acoustic and an electric playing together, the electric is doing the higher octave. Then the banjo comes in and makes it sound really woodsy. I love it.
There's a band called Animal drive. With Deno Jeusik. They did a cover of this song with the intro. The cd is called back to the roots. 4 other covers some of best covers I've heard. I'm sure you've heard of Deno. Incredible singer and pianist .from Ukraine. He's there version over Justin Beiber. But went metal. Lol we weren't so lucky . 😅
It’s like Rush not doing the intro to La Villa Strangiato. After awhile, they either just go into it, or do some variant. As cool and as fun as the song Xanadu would be for a cover band (unless you advertise as a Rush cover band), most people won’t get it in a live setting. It’d be like doing 2112 or Hemispheres in their entirety. Basically, know your audience.
dude to make playing acoustic guitar way easier is put super lite bronze Daddario 10-47 on your Taylor and any acoustic you own,it will change the way you feel about playing your acoustic guitar and make it more enjoyable trust me i’ll been using 10-47 on all my acoustics for the last 20+ years really saves your fingers and wrist
I've always loved Warrant, ever since their first album. Once I started playing guitar and listening to their songs through that lens, I couldn't even really process what was going on in that intro. I still can't, really.
Nice work, Mike. New appreciation for the intro. Got to see Warrant at Birmingham NEC (UK) supporting DLR in '91. Damn good show. Like Rory Gallagher used to say, "you gotta hit the damn thing, y'know?" In a similar vein, you could try Jake E. Lee's acoustic intro on Badlands' "Winter's Call". Hope you feel better soon, mate. 😁👍
The banjo of that song was recorded by the producer beau hill also the intro was recorded when jani's brother was just jamming and the producer hit the record bottom
If there's one thing I learned being a successful entertainer (by successful i mean, keeping the dancers dancing, the crowd's attention and my bosses happy, wanting me back and paying me well) intros and solos are kept at a minimum and it's all about keeping the fireworks and booms coming,so to speak. As far as the intro to Uncle Tom's Cabin,it can either be cut in half making it only a few seconds or can be played the same after another sequence of songs as a small break. Either way,in this case, the standard or shortened intro is necessary in preceding the rest of the song. Also,a good beat draws the girls, the girls draw the guys and the drinks flow and sell. Not enough guys care about a song being covered perfectly with intros and solos and most girls don't care about proper scales, notes and intros. And,YES,if you want to be successful and draw more than a few local musicians who are there to articulate and judge your musicianship, you gotta draw the girls in numbers. Girls go to where they can shake their hips to a beat, not to hear solos and intros.
I just watched the great new Yacht Rock doc HBO put out. In it, someone says something about how yacht rock is one of the only genres that didn't originally have a term and was named 20 years later. It got me thinking about hair metal. Maybe I just forgot, but I don't remember people calling it that at the time, it feels like the name came about after the grunge era. Am I crazy or were people calling it that in the 80s?
Off topic, but I saw an amazing band the other night. They are called 'The Black Jacket Symphony' They do covers of full albums. The one I saw was Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the moon. We were the last DSoTM show. They are also doing Led Zeppelin, and the Beatles Abbey road. As well as a few various others. If you get a chance, they are the best cover band I've ever heard. Also, some of that Butt Rock as it's also been coined, has some amazing guitar in them. Good stuff.
I disliked Warrant but I love everything about that song. In my opinion that part is easily on the rock music legends list. Your channel is world class. Fearless when it comes to figuring the big challenges in parts. Thanks again.
I've rejected adding Crazy On You to my band's repertoire because I can barely manage that intro in my practice space, never mind nailing it in front of 300 people. And I'm a lead player and just did an Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son tribute set (as Adrian Smith), so I can play complex and technical stuff, but yeah, no spotlight solos lol :)
We play roundabout and tgat beginning guitar part is intense to play and lets be honest, roundabout is intense already lol. The hammer ons gotta be right or it dont sound good.
I must admit that I think I have never heard that intro or song before. I'm not very familiar with Warrant but I know at least Cherry Pie. I think one reason for avoiding might also be that it's not very easy to remember in my opinion. There is pattern but at least I'm having difficulties to "catch" it. I'm having a flu and I'm quite tired right now so that might also be reason for my poor memory.
Tip for you. If playing that on acoustic is hard on the hands. I highly recommend you practice ALL your music on it … even leads. Yes I know you won’t be able to bend and such as easy. But it WILL build hand speed , strength , endurance , detail , and intonation . Not to mention when you then switch back to electric , it will feel like BUTTER !! I do 2 hrs acoustic , then switch up for 4 more hrs everyday . I’m 56 been playing since I was 3. I learned this trick 40 years ago from Alex Lifeson. In a personal meet and greet .(my English teacher / guitar student knew them in high school) Me , and my step father were taken back stage. Where we got to hang in the green room with them before the show. She had told them about this 16 yo kid that was giving her lessons. And that I could play several of their songs. So Alex hands me an axe ,and says “let’s hear it ..” I was shaking like a leaf ,and thought I was going to puke .. 😂 So I started playing Fly by night . I hit the second chord , and he stops me .. then proceeds to show me all the “right chords “. I had learned it from a book , that as you well know was completely wrong .. but sounded close . So over the next 10-15 mins. he gave me a few tips to make myself a better player. And this one was the most valuable. Believe me if you think playing is hard at 20 , 30 yo just wait till you hit 50. That said , All of them were amazingly down to earth guys. Although Neil was in his own little world , and didn’t really acknowledge anyone much . lol. He was in his PRE SHOW ZONE .. Anyhow sorry about the long winded story , but I felt it was necessary to emphasize this is NOT my advise .. But Alex’s …

I was not really a Warrant fan, but I really like this song. RIP Jani.
Great intro. I believe it was Jani Lane's brother who played it on the album version.
Great job on that. Sounds great.
I just saw Warrant a couple of weeks ago and the intro was recorded. The set was awesome and Uncle Tom's Cabin was the last number. Was great!
I played it in a couple of different bands. I drummed and sang the song. We did not do the intro though.
Awesome! Always wanted to learn this right!
That is a great lick. Can you do the Crazy on you lick by Heart ?
I was 100% expecting "crazy on you"
dude to make playing acoustic guitar way easier is put super lite bronze Daddario 10-47 on your Taylor and any acoustic you own,it will change the way you feel about playing your acoustic guitar and make it more enjoyable trust me i’ll been using 10-47 on all my acoustics for the last 20+ years really saves your fingers and wrist
Like Rory Gallagher used to say, "you gotta hit the damn thing, y'know?"
In a similar vein, you could try Jake E. Lee's acoustic intro on Badlands' "Winter's Call".
Hope you feel better soon, mate. 😁👍
The banjo of that song was recorded by the producer beau hill also the intro was recorded when jani's brother was just jamming and the producer hit the record bottom
4:26 wow you have a SLASH guitar player in your band! 🤘
Thanks and get well buddy!
This is such a killer intro to a great song.

I’ve seen footage of Warrant playing this song skipping the intro. I can’t play it perfectly, but, I can play it… sorta.
Good stuff.
Great intro and song!!!
Dang,,,, not getting anything done today it seems. LOL That was great!
I disliked Warrant but I love everything about that song. In my opinion that part is easily on the rock music legends list. Your channel is world class. Fearless when it comes to figuring the big challenges in parts. Thanks again.
She’s my Cherry Pie, looks so good make a grown man cry
In walked her daddy, standing 6 feet 4, he said you ain’t gonna swing with my daughter no more 🤣
Very nicely done!
Lol I knew it was going to be this song right when I read the caption, only because this is the only song I have skipped the intro on. It's tough!
On a side note , I once played The Rain Song live with a band. It’s on my channel. If your interested look in my playlist for “Now Hear This “ ✌️
Beautiful Taylor, what model?
