It hurts me that game developers KNOW that about 90% of people who play their game will never beat it, so if they have to skimp then they skimp on the endings. It makes sense, too. You frontload the fun so that the majority of people who play your game will come away feeling good about it, but it still hurts.

I don't think they ever marketted it as a RPG though.
It's supposed to be a top-down immersive sim.
This reminds me when PREY came out and people were disapointed because it was lacking as a FPS when it was never designed as one.

    • @Qladstone

@@arenkai Immersive sims are about freedom and ability to play the game in many ways - freedom is meaningless if your choices have minimal consequences.

    • @arenkai
      @arenkai 2 роки тому +1

      @@Qladstone No ? Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying.
Thief 2 is an immersive sim, but in this game you don't have consequences for your actions other than gameplay.
Same goes for System Shock. And Deus Ex only has choices for story outcomes in the very last level.
Immersive Sims are about giving the player choice in how they want to tackle obstacles, sure, but it's more about the level of interaction the player has on the environment. What they can use at their advantage in those environment given the knowledge they have.
If that's reminiscent of a lot of games coming out nowadays, that's because most big games now implement immersive sim aspects to their game to create systemic worlds that react to the player in satisfying ways.
In short: give tools to the player, let them have fun with them in a systemic world with a decent level of gameplay choice
I had a discussion recently with one of the founders of Arkane Studios, and he brang to my attention that Breath of the Wild has more in common with Immersive Sims than it has with other Zelda Games.

The atmosphere, the music, the combat was all great about
the game, everything else I felt needed more budget to be on the same level as the good, positive things about it. I finished it after 50 hours, and despite the negatives, I really enjoyed the game. And I instantly started playing Hard West, and other not perfect but fun game. I really enjoy these smaller indie games, sometimes much more tham those big 3A games out there. These little games reminds me of the games of my childhood, the good ones. :)
Ps.: Colantonio left Arhane as he felt burnt out creatively, and wanted to do something different, something that Arkans/Bethesda may not have allowed him to do if he stayed there.

Graphics and perspective (in the sense of FPS, 3rd person...) are important, sure, but in the end, only secondary. Yes, me likes shiny graphics, they can help to create an immersive setting (Green Hell comes to mind), but then again, I am generation C64 and I was totally immersed in games with graphics far more primitive than what I can play on some smartwatches today.
What kills this game for me is the lack of consequences or of _shown_ consequences. I can totally dive into games with the typical alibi story if this skeleton of a story provides a decent background for whatever I do. Anyone here who actually played 'Alien Rage'? Not exactly deep writing, but it works _and_ it gives me a reason to chisel through those alien hordes with a grim face and an immense amound of fun and satisfaction.
For me, the question how a story _ends_ and how much a game gives me the feeling, what I have done as that character I have played as was sensible and meaningful, is just as important as game mechanics and gameplay and definitely much more important than graphics. Anyone here plays 'Caves of Qud'? _That_ is what I am talking about... A game that just tells me in the end, yeah, you did stuff, nice, is not worth my time and money in my book.

Huh, "what you did" vs "what resulted" is such a small change that makes a massive improvement. Even if it's only the tiniest next step along the chain. Spared/saved X is boring, I know what I did, thanks for telling me. X set up/did Y gives the same base information, but by adding a bit more story/context makes it much more interesting.

Weird West has a lot of shared DNA with The Outer Worlds. New game from a set of creators with a serious pedigree that I want to root for because they are escapees from the Bethesda Dungeons. Ultimately, what they end up creating is technically good but ends up scarce on content and, because of that, scarce on opportunities for the sort of writing and impactful RPG branching storytelling that made me so fond of their previous work.
With both games, I don't really like them but I want them to succeed because a sequel that reuses the existing engine and is able to focus on making lots of content would likely be one of my favorite games.
As for specific criticism of Weird West, I think the combat fell into a similar gamplay trap as Dishonored; they have a set of abilities that are conceptually cool but are buzzkilled by an antagonistic mana meter and are implemented with a control scheme that makes them a jarring interruption to the otherwise sublime combat.

Games are a weird product, value wise. Hundreds of thousands of hours go into making a decent game,
For many people, minimum wage is about 12 bucks or some shit. So a game that provides 25 hours of game play at 40 bucks, is a steal. Because it takes about 5 hours of your life and effort to afford it, and it gives you 5 times that in enjoyment.
But it *takes* hundreds of thousands of hours to _make_ the game. Which you'd think would mean that the game is being sold for less than what it's worth, and it should cost more. But it doesn't because economics,
And because we pay for it... and less. But, and then because pirates, remember pirates? So... thats a thing and does anyone else smell toast? I lost my train of thought and now I smell breakfast

I hear what you're saying but video games make a ton of money, especially these small studios that fork over a small amount of money to some advertisers that get their game a ton of coverage which makes the game relevant and in turn makes streamers want to play it.
It just happened with "Death Trash" recently. The game has about a 7 hour story plus an extra hour of optional content and that's gonna cost you 20 dollars. The game isn't abandoned but developer hasn't said a word about adding anything for months and it wouldn't surprise me if they don't because "who cares, we already made our money and our game isn't relevant anymore". The game was advertised saying this is only a small portion and we will be adding more to the story soon, we'll It's been since August, so wtf? It's frustrating because I'm becoming less willing to purchase these games that are in early access or developed by small studios and I notice that I'm not the only one. It sucks cause some of these games are reliant on people like me in order to get out there in the market but I'm sick of getting burnt

The game industry now makes much more money than the movie industry. While I don't mind supporting smaller AA studios (such as the studio that made this game) and indie studios... games should not cost more. AAA game's make enough money to award their CEOs two million dollar a year salaries and hundreds of millions of dollars in stock options, and yet you got people online defending these game corporations when they raise the price of games to 70 dollars.

@@alexoelkers2292 it's probably fair to say, much more work goes into making games these days than it did in 1996, but games are such a constantly evolving medium that I don't see the price of a AAA game ever doing anything but going up. Imagine how much a game that could accurately be called the first SAO would cost. At this rate, I would bet probably 80 bucks. And with the rate of games prices increasing, I'd say thats about 15 to 20 years off

The price absolutely does not have to go up to be profitable with development costs and inflation. There is no universal value for immersion, it is purely individual preference. For one it is no hud, for me it is all the indicators that could possibly be on the hud. More i can objectively observe, more immersed i generally am.
I do find it funny how idiots like to say "you dont have hud in real life". Well, shit, in real life i have all 5 senses(sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing), in game, without hud, you have just two. This is where hud comes into play, to somewhat compensate. If a game has a "morality system" it does not have a morality system.

Disco Elysium is a defacto example of how to do "Morality" and reputation.
Have people treat you and react to you realistically based on their own ideals, standings, opinions, beliefs and if they really care or don't care as long as you're doing what they ask, no gauge, no meter. Based on realistic expectations, reputation and interpersonal links. If I'm the worst pile of garbage this side of California and go to Florida of course I got a clean slate and nobody is going to be murmering about me unless I made the coast to coast news.

Just because you disagree with a developers choice of morality doesn't mean they didn't implement a morality system in their game.

just because they call it a morality system, does not make it a morality system.

This lazy "motion comics" style of cutscene is getting really old. Zero effort. Kinda like the humor in your videos.

jesus christ man, can you not use tiktok style meme clips every 10 seconds of the video? I like what you're saying but its broken up by barely relevant clips too frequently.
