Friends don't let friends use the public showers in Rehoboth Beach. My condolences for being from Bear.
HOW DARE YOU! Cat's aren't sociopaths, they're psychopaths; thank you very much.
they might be psychopaths, but if you're passed out in a burning house, they won't leave you behind until they slap the shit out of you until you regain consciousness so you don't burn to death while unconscious.
I'm sure it's only because we're both crusty old cynics, but damn I love your take on... basically everything.
It feels like I'm listening/ watching my best friend from high school who became a YT content creator.
You're just so real and relatable. Please stay that way 🍺
I like him because of the exact opposite reason! It's nice to see someone who's completely different, but articulates their thoughts so well - it helps me understand what all you boomers think like :D
@@Dikucow that's awesome! I sub to a few millennial YTers for the same reasons. I don't relate to them like I can a creator like Stratedgy, but I feel like I learn a lot about how this generation thinks, which is arguably more important.

"This only got a 10 from IGN because the cat on the cover is black"
This is the sort of videogame aimed at people who don't usually play videogames. That said, I got this for my daughter who's a cat fanatic and was surprised when I ended up really liking it. it has charm, it has heart, it has character - three things conspicuously missing from a lot of games, it feels like. As a cinematic walking sim with light puzzle elements and set pieces, it absolutely nails what it sets out to do, sometimes that's exactly what you want. You know how some movies are considered as self consciously "Oscar bait"? This game seems to have that same sort of vibe to me. It's nowhere close to a 10/10 for me though.
I've watched hard core gamers fall in love with this game. to say it's aimed at people who don't play video games is kinda a stretch if you ask me.
@@misspiggy9647 yeah that's fair. maybe i could have put it better; like, someone who doesn't typically "game" could pick this up and have a good time without stress or effort. i dunno.

This one reminds me of that episode of "Love+Death+Robots". And that's not a bad thing.
This was a fun little game. Just a simple and complete experience that does a good job at what it set out to do.
See how Stray and Elden Ring both became incredibly hyped, sold way more copies than were ever expected, and the both games share the following things: They are complete experiences from the get-go, generally bug-free and well-polished, tell an engaging story through exploration while allowing you to explore at your own pace, respect you as a player to figure everything out on your own. Hope the gamedev gets the memo.
YES EXACTLY!!!
It's the cat.. Outer Wilds tells the most engaging story in gaming and didn't do nearly as well as far as i can tell. It's also what you would call a complete game, so complete that nothing compares afterwards.
Strat-edgy? Posting a game made within the last five years? Never thought I’d see the day
He's losing touch
Kingmaker that old ?
It felt really cool getting one of the notebooks before being told about them. Slum section was so strong and charming. Solid lil game.
I liked a sci-fi narrative that was told not from a perspective of a human. We need more of those.
Great pairing of a game and reviewer! I enjoy your longer-form stuff but thanks for knocking this quick one out of the park while it's still topical.
Love your writing and editing and the depth of your reviews/retrospectives, and as a big Kenshi fan and seeing how someone asked you about it, I wanted to chime in and say I would also love to see you do a deep dive into that game.
I liked it.
There's my review.

Reminds me of when I know how to do something, or | do something already, and someone tells me to do it the way that I already did or will do in the future. Like for some reason when someone tells me something I know I think I get upset because maybe I'm insecure about my intelligence? It's like when my mom used to remind me to take out the trash because tomorrow is trash day, and it takes all my will not to blow up to say I KNOW! I WAS PLANNING TO DO THAT LATER! YOU DIDN'T NEED TO REMIND ME! I WISH YOU TRUSTED ME! In reality, I think she just didn't want me to forget and it was a friendly reminder but I always took it the wrong way. I still do this and I don't know what to really do about it.
I liked and thought it was fairly good, though it was part of my PS+ subscription which I was paying for anyway. Hard to recommend it entirely with that in mind but it's definitely worth at least £10/15$ as far as I am concerned
Strat up Kenshi, do it! Naked Martial Artist BEEP playthrough for the review!
if you own or owned a cat you talk with them, normally you try to communicate regardless of language barrier so robots talking to the cat, robots that are made to be human-like, is it the obvious outcome. Of course you as a player benefit from the dialogue but it's very accurate for a human-esque being taught to act human-like do human-related stuff like talking to animals or stuff even knowing they won't understand
I'm just amazed the game isn't stuttering
It's disappointing that this isn't more of a sandbox sim. I think a cat simulator would be a lot of fun
I remember a game on PS3 where you can play as anything from a chicken to a alligator ( including cats ) in a post apocalyptic world, where your objective is to survive. You start off as one, then venture out into the dangerous world where other animals from hogs, dogs, lions, hippos, bears etc ( some of which are in packs ) find a female or male if you're female and mate, then feed your younglings, eventually die from old age assuming you're not ate by something else, and then take over your children who can venture out together to do the exact same thing.
(Was a sandbox game with different environments with the plot that animals escaped the zoo and breaded over dozens of years where the game takes place)
@@Elnegro.. you may be thinking of "Tokyo Zoo", which is cool but not exactly the same thing
@@salsamancer Yeah that's it, and yes however my point is they should make something similar and yet bigger in scope.
For like 5 minutes maybe? I mean, what would you do in a cat sim?
Jump on things, scratch things, eat things, hunt butterflies, push things off the table ... I don't see the long-term appeal.
hey man , we met at EA at the smoke table lol. glad to see you're still making vids. keep it up man!!!!
You're a poet. Your description of Delaware is reminiscent of Keith Morris's Ugly Day
The music really sold the experience for me
haven't watched video but it's one of my treasures personally. love this game for its charm, wish it were longer, but it's got that "just right" length ;)
Ooooh he said bad things about a game with cats that the whole internet seem to love.
Bold startegy Cotton, let's see if it pays off.
A few years ago I would have said that it's trash and doesn't have enough gameplay to qualify as a game. But after playing nice "games" with very little gameplay ( Like What remains of Edith Finch ) I totally understand why people love them.
Bold strat-edgy
@@revenant54 I almost made that pun.
The moment Navi starts talking to you, I sorta soured on this game *super* hard. It was fun/fascinating to be a cat exploring, but then you get a talking robot, talking to you, a fucking cat, and expecting that you not only expertly understand it, it just keeps spoonfeeding every single goddamn thing you need to do. I fucking hated it. You are a goddamn cat, what the hell are you doing chatting with robots??
This is why there are no humans (at least physically) in the game. Obviously a human knows that they cannot talk to animals. However, a robot perhaps wouldn't be aware of this, trying to communicate to the critter anyways.
@@eagleboi3593 The robots are people.... you literally activate one to become your Navi. Regardless of the after the fact justification, it just doesn't work for me, because future or not, I'm here in the present playing and it is just jarring and not that interesting in the end. It's not what I was looking for.
@@Latchfpv You mean B-12? He literally states that he has been so long in the network that he forgot a large part of his memory, perhaps that happened to Companions as well. I'm not trying to change your view on the game, that is, if you like it or not. I am just trying to explain.
You seem like kind of person who would nitpick something minor, make a big deal out of it and pretend you have a reson to hate a game that everyone like.
1) What else did you expect? A game without a story?
2) It is pretty obvious that cat you play as is much more intelligent than real cats. Even before you meet robot, solving some puzzles like putting bucket into fan, or following "follow me sings"
3) Not only that, there is a note in the game that says "cat appeared from machine" or something. I am not sure what this means exactly, but I assume it just further goes into saying that your cat is not a regular one
@@saniel2748 "What else did you expect? A game without a story?"
Counterpoint: Rain World exists.
In Rain World, just as in Stray, you play as a cat (or a member of a fictional cat-like animal species, rather, called slugcat) trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world and exploring the abandoned overgrown city and it's outskirts; there are also talking robots. However, the main differences between these two games are that:
a) dialogue in Rain World is *extremely* rare (this includes any form of written text, as well), to the point of almost being nonexistent;
b) when the rare occurrences of dialogue *do* happen, the robots talk to you the same way I talk to my own cat: trying to convey the intended meaning through emotion and tone and not the words themselves, as if talking to a very small child. None of the characters ever expect the slugcat to *actually* understand the words they are saying (on account of you being an animal) on a level higher than simply reading the intonation and interpreting it as "danger/no danger".
Despite all that, Rain World still manages to have a story, although that story is mostly symbolic and philosophical instead of a more traditional plot where "X happens" and "Y happens". So the protagonist being an animal of a non-speaking, non-sentient kind (and not antropomorphic kind) doesn't mean that there can't be a proper narrative with them at the center. Stray could have done something similar, or maybe even went full hard on the environmental storytelling and left it to the human playing the game to put the pieces together, while the player characer would be simply travelling from point A to point B (trying to escape the city and get back to their home, perhaps) without really caring about any of that, because they are a cat.
So humans are gone but vending machines, ACs, and cushions are still in use?

Good kitty, pspspspspsps.
Ever since it has been announced and the first teaser hit YT the cynic and critical me loved it. Throwing all acquired caution to the wind. Wanted to love it unconditionally, more like. Now STRAY is real. As is your take on it. Pretty much sums up my emotions from and engagments with the game. So it became a game in a long, long time that I really, truly love. Ok, first of all, if we don't get a future video with Nick and Jerry Stratfeld debating the nuances of a video game, I will be MILDLY DISAPPOINTED. I was a sucker from the getgo with this game. Everything from the art style to just playing as "cat" had me more then excited. I realize it has some flaws, especially on PC, but it gives me that same feeling as taking a short nap and waking up at a nice sunset, only to see my actual cat sleeping next to me, deep in some dream. Its cozy in just the right ways.
Both, next question
What kind of Fallout is this?
For a serious comment, I watched someone play this like 12 hours ago, I left feeling that this game lacks a lot of game-y elements and everything that do great, like the world building/set or cat animations/interactions, could be way better as a movie.
Nice to see you talking about this since most reviews are something like "You can be a cat but it."

8:30 I would like to hear a few examples of this, because from what I've seen it's the opposite. If zurks eat metal, why are there intact metal objects and perfectly working electrical mechanisms in every place you find them? No nibble marks or anything. They don't chew on trash when idle. Why is it possible to corral them up with flimsy metal fencing? Shouldn't they be able to eat through? And what's with the pseudo-medieval Asiatic aesthetic the companions have? Shouldn't they have only ever known a modern world? They run off when they first see you, but then all immediately trust you completely? Even the ones in the other villages?

Sadly I can't finish this vid, I have taken the stance of if a game interests me I will literally look at almost nothing on it until I can get it. Sometimes that bites me and other times and other times I am gifted with a wonderful experience that leaves me wanting more. I have waited for this game since 2018 when it took place in a pseudo Kowloon walled city. It had like 3 or 4 updates then it disappeared for like 20 years and then randomly popped up at e3 or something and I was excited again. If this game does well enough and let's not kid ourselves it will, we might finally get a Dog's Life remake we so desperately deserve.
