Whoah! It was great to see your excitement over the planned July Criterion releases! Thank you for another infectious cinema conversation that has me very much looking forward to the month of July. What's even better is that hopefully we will have a chance to get these titles at 50% off if the Barnes and Noble sale traditional dates are the same this year! I saw *The Wild Bunch* for the first time not too long ago because our friend Roger Kirby did a Sam Peckinpah series on his UA-cam channel that inspired me to think about that director some more. I'm a big *Straw Dogs* fan also, so this is going to be cool having a chance to see another of his works! I've always been aware of *Le Samourai* but have not yet seen it. If it has Alain Delon acting stylish and cool, then I know I will love it. He was so great in *La Piscine* ! I can't wait to finally add this film to my collection and also make the connection it has to *Ghost Dog* at long last. I truly love it when Criterion sprinkles some quintessential 80s films into the collection and *Risky Business* is an epic addition! The cover art design is iconic and fun to look at but I might mention a certain scene with curtains or something to do with a train ride as contenders for cover art design ideas! Lol! Renting that film as a kid because I also always heard my mother mentioning it was an interesting experience for me and I can't wait to watch the film again as an adult! The other films being released also sound incredible based on your reaction to them, Daisuke. I would love to have a chance to see those as well because you always make the case for how amazing they are! I've seen two other Wim Wenders films, *Wings of Desire* and *Paris, Texas* so I am interested in what kind of films he is still making these days and knowing his talent as a director makes the prospect of seeing this film even better. Criterion continues to be a true gift to the film loving community. Venturing off to purchase a new Criterion physical media release takes me back to my youth and the adventures to the toy store to look for a new action figure or Mighty Max set. It gives similar sensations to bring a new item home to explore and all of these Criterions are just such "next-level" experiences! Thank you as always for fostering the conversation and congregation around these films/releases, my friend. You are the man! "(Daisuke) - IS - the man." Let's rock!

Very happy to see Perfect Days and Farewell My Concubine make it in, however, in the case of Perfect Days, I would've loved it's spiritual counterpart Paterson (2016) to be included as well, that film is one of my all time faves.

How interesting that you mention Paterson. When I was watching Perfect Days, I was reminded of, and thought about Paterson. It was nice to read that you also find the two films to have a spiritual connection. Paterson would definitely be an exciting addition to The Criterion Collection or another boutique label, with a nice presentation/artwork and extras.

This might be the one month I get everything. I saw Farewell my Concubine recently and it’s simply one of the all time great epics. Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid is one of my favorite westerns.

Finally Glauber Rocha in the Criterion Collection! Crazy it didn't happened earlier. I'd love Terra Em Transe to be released someday too.

So excited about Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid being included in the collection as it is ONLY the second Peckinpah film to be honored in this way. It's a flawed film but a very compelling one to watch. You describe it well as having a palpable sense of melancholy, but I see it more as a palpable sense of regret, particularly given what Peckinpah was going through in his personal life at the time. It also serves as a fascinating psychological study of the film maker who uses both "The Kid" and the older Garrett as stand-ins for himself, and metaphors for both the man who refuses change and is ultimately destroyed because of it, and the man who reluctantly embraces change only to "sell out" and sacrifice his soul. Encompasses all of Peckinpah's major poetic themes from loyalty, to the unchanged man in changing times. Such a fascinating film on a subtextual level while also being a compelling narrative in its own right. Can't wait to view it again. And here's hoping Criterion eventually gives the treatment to Ride The High Country, Major Dundee, Noon Wine, Cable Hogue, Junior Bonner, Alfredo Garcia and Cross of Iron.

I agree with you regarding Peckinpah's last Western. Peckinpah wanted his name removed from it. I saw it in it's original theatrical release in high school and the general audience consensus back then was essentially that bad Peckinpah is better than no Peckinpah at all. Since then I've seen the HD streaming version of the Turner 50th anniversary release and will be excited to hear the commentary from the many editors of the film on this new Criterion edition.

The way I caught my breath and my mouth dropped open at the announcement at the release of FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE . Birthday gift to myself in July for sure . One of the most breathtaking and grand films with such an emotional wallop . The performances of Leslie Cheung and Gong Li were master classes . I saw this in the theater when it was released and it is still my number one film of 1993 . I even still have the original theatrical movie poster . I’m so very excited

Hi Daisuke, always great and enjoyable to watch your reactions and comments on the upcoming releases. Le Samoraï is such a great film, it will be hard to resist not adding the new 4K scan/presentation. Black God, White Devil was released in the UK through Radiance's partner label Mawu films. I picked it up when it released and hope to watch it soon. Your comments definitely made me feel very keen about that. Perfect Days I adored when I saw it in the cinemas. Glad it is coming to Criterion. Mubi will be releasing it in the UK around that time as well. Very excited to pick the film up and watch it again. The other films I have yet to see, but all seem like very interesting and very well regarded films.

The Criterion release of Black God, White Devil, uses the exact same source as the Radiance release. So, for anyone on a budget, Radiance, at around $20.00, is an excellent alternative. I believe the extras, are the same though I could be wrong here. This is probably one of the most exciting Criterion months, in a while (to me, anyway.) Thanks for a *great* video, Daisuke!

I am actually happy that we got amazing choices for the first time a a while.
Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid, Perfect Days, Black God, White Devil and a rerelease of Le Samouraï?!?! How cool is that.

The Criterion July selections are all exceptional, this lineup is one of their most exciting in a while. The new 4k restoration of LE SAMOURAI is currently in theatrical re-release and starts today (April 16th) in San Diego followed by other select cities throughout April and May. I have the Radiance (UK) all-region limited edition release of BLACK GOD WHITE DEVIL, which also contains the same supplements, and it's an extraordinary film. RISKY BUSINESS is arguably the seminal film of the 80's, so it's great to see that it's getting the Criterion treatment.

Most excited for Le Samouri 4k as I was getting close to buying the blu-ray. So Criterion has decided to update cover art for its 4k releases...what took them so long to get a clue! Man, Alan Delon gives sterling performances in a couple other Criterion blu-rays I own....La Piscine, Purple Noon. He is truly Mr. Cool, on par with Connery's Bond character imo.

no doubt this is a great month for many people. especially excited to see Concubine enter the collection as I didn't think criterion would be doing it, kind of amazing they never even did the dvd back in the day. actually like the cover art, simplisitic but effective - such a potent, tragic, film. (as an aside I saw recently the chinese film the Blue Kite which was really superb - I hope this too could be included in the CC someday)

these 4k + blu ray releases are cool and all but i wish they would prioritize making those out of releases currently only on dvd; mainly Stray Dog and The Bad Sleep Well come to mind as huge oversights not to have on blu ray.

I was considering selling my Le Samourai bluray to a friend but only if the bluray included with the new 4K is the same as the current one. Also, I really like the new artwork, but the original was so stylish in it's sort of cold simplicity, much like the main character in the film.

Yeh. Not bad. But like always it depend what utterly ludicrous prices they are gonna charge. Usually far and above 4K’s which is just insane.

I think the prices are pretty reasonable generally on Amazon. They are expensive at Barnes and Noble but can get a good *deal if waiting for the sales
