Hey everyone thanks for tuning into my update video where I go over what it's like living with ceramic brake pads. This is the second video in my two part series the first being linked below. So if you haven't checked it out yet feel free to do so. Ceramic are best for everyday driving, no squealing or brake dust. Easily to slow down from triple digits. You easily get 4 or 5 years of usage driving moderately.

Great video! After watching this, Im seriously considering getting ceramic brake pads because I recently changed my rotors and my pads on my Altima and got some new set of custom wheels and noticed as soon as I got my rotors and pads changed that I got a huge mess of brownish brake dust on my wheels especially on the fronts. Even after I ceramic coated my wheels, it still gives me a hard time to clean them. The ceramic coating does indeed slow down the process of the dust piling up better than without but it’s still very hectic to deal with. I know brake dust is normal, but a crazy mess of brownish/goldish dust messing up the look of my wheels is just insane. And they’re black wheels too. I’ve always considered getting ceramic pads but this video just solidified my mind to getting ceramic pads ASAP

Check out Carbon Ceramics it's a Carbon Infused Ceramic pad you can also get them in Metallic. They offer aggressive stopping power, minimal brake dust and long life and low wear on rotors. Check them out.

I’ve spent more time than necessary trying to figure out whether ceramic or semi-metallic are the way to go and the most consistent information I’ve found is if you prefer a little more initial bite, marginally more stopping power, don’t care about dusting, and don’t care about having to replace your rotors each pad change go with an OE (for VW) semi-metallic compound otherwise ceramic is the way to go.
Also, it’s wise to bed-in ceramic because I do think they primarily rely on adherent friction vs. abrasive friction semi-metallic I don’t really think it matters too much.
Side note, I found this particular platform actually relies on the rear brakes more, I have a 2006 Jetta which should be the same, I notice my rear pads go out first.

I need information about my S8 D3 ceramic discs. Can I get aftermarket pads to match? Also, if I remove them, can they be replaced with steel discs easily or are there a lot of additional things to consider?

If you haven't changed pads yet, I highly recommend EBC Redstuff. Used on my old BMW 328Ci and my friend used it on his tuned EVO. Ceramic pads, quiet, long lasting, excellent cold bite and basically no dust! :)

The problem with this video is that there's a wide range of performance with ceramic pads depending on the manufacturer. You can't judge them based on your experience with just one brand of ceramic pads. And you didn't even mention what brand they are so this video really is pretty useless. There are incredibly good ceramic pads and there are terrible ceramic pads. One of the reasons for that the binders used are different. Remember, the ceramic material is just a small part of the brake pad material. The rest can be organic, semi-metallic or other materials. So, as I said, you can't generalize based on your experience with just one brand of ceramic pads. Check out Akebono ceramic pads, for example. Some claim they are the best pads in the world. At the very least, you should have mentioned what brand of pad your talking about. Are they cheap ones or more expensive ones from a company with a great reputation.
All-in-all, that makes this video pretty useless. It tells people virtually nothing.

Either cover your brakes with cloth or preferably remove the rims, clean them really well inside and out, dry thoroughly then use a dry film lubricant with PFTE/Teflon - I use WD40 personally and you'll find that wheels only need a quick hosing to get them clean again. I did try using a ceramic coat that I use on my paint, that works well too - though - for me, it didn't last as long as the WD40.

I've tried ATE ceramic pads and found out they wore the disc much quicker. I prefer to pay for pads instead of discs so it was a no go for me. That was of course many years ago, the compounds may have changed.

Imo using copper, iron containing semi metallic or organic brake pads depending on composition can lead to under laying rust and paint issues on most vehicles.

Question: Why have you put ceramic's on a basic A4?

    • @BakerReid
      @BakerReid  6 років тому +1

My goal with the switch was to cut down on the amount of brake dust I had to clean. On top of that I needed new pads and they were the same price as normal pads so I thought I'd try them out.

      Bruh.
A "basic" a4 can be a really good car for small road.
Plus even the 1.8 can make like 260 hp. But you're american and don't understand that 260 hp is plenty. You got the same in your minivan, but american people still understand that their cars are heavy, they don't need more power, they need to be lighter.

2pacnasgame I’m pretty sure they were Akebono. I can’t say if this brand is better than any others but I haven’t had any problems with them even during the winter when it got to -40c. I think the price is subjective too and you can spend as much or as little as you want but after a certain price nothing changes between them.

Semi-metallic pads have a large amount of graphite in them, to keep them from squeaking. That is where the black dust comes from. I got much better results from PBR Deluxe ceramics than you seem to be getting from whatever brand those are.
