Congratulations on a great month, gents! I note that Ed persists in flirting with Silmarillion heresy, but at least he’s finally read “the fantasy Bible.” 😁 I envy you both your youthful connection to Malice. The Faithful and the Fallen produced instant nostalgia for me as soon as I finished it, so I can’t imagine what it must be like for you to wander again in the vividness of the Banished Lands.
Thank you so much! Hahah, Ed is on very dangerous ground... but he did love Beren & Lúthien so he has redeemed himself in part. It is such a magical experience reading The Faithful and the Fallen again! I will be following in the steps of Ed as I give the series a reread as well later in 2022! Thank you so much as always for watching :) Will
Looks like a cracking month! Just putting it out there…there’s a volcano going off in Iceland at the moment that is very accessible to go and look at. So if you want to go and throw a ring in a volcano you know where to come….
Let it be known that I changed my boy’s nappy to this. As a father wrestling with a very enthusiastic baby, thank you for keeping him gripped long enough for me to complete the task! Good luck with the theory, Will. And Ed, check out the film Wind River! You might enjoy it more than Winter Counts
😂 we are happy to entertain people of all ages! I'm glad your WWE skills are being put the the test. Will passed his theory so beware of the roads soon! 🚘 Just looked it up and I'd been meaning to watch it for ages! Thanks mate. Ed
Really concerned about Will while watching this and wondering if he needs to take an Excedrin Tension Headache. Hearing The Simarillion described as The Battle of the Five Armies, but on an more epic scale makes me want to read it for the first time. I love a good battle. Yeah, Indian Reservations are under federal jurisdiction, not state or local. Sometimes they will have a tribal police force (you can see examples of that in Longmire and Yellowstone). The movie Wind River is a thriller involving a Native American and an FBI agent gets called in to investigate. It's pretty heart rending, all in all. It brings attention to things I had no idea about and it was just so well done. It's not easy to find Native American fiction, especially some that aren't crime or mystery. Tony Hillerman (his are about the Navajo) is one author I've read and also James D. Doss (his are about the Ute). I haven't tried Thomas Perry's Jane Whitefield (Navajo) series yet or any Peter Bowen. I used to devour Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak (Aleut) series set in Alaska. I'd love to find more books written by Native Americans themselves, but those are not easy to find.
In July I finished Childhoods End by Arthur C Clarke. I began reading Boys Life by Robert McCammon. For good non-fiction one of my favorite authors is Erik Larson, who wrote Dead Wake, The Devil in the White City, and Thunderstruck. I recommend his work if you haven't tried him yet. Happy reading.
True Detective Season 1 was one of the best shows on tv. Ever. I'm in a Sun Eater readalong on Mike's channel, along with Five Warrior Angels as well, which I strongly recommend, 40% into the first book - The Forgetting Moon, which has strong Faithful and the Fallen Vibes. Glad to see you finished Greatcoats, one of the most enjoyable fantasy series I've read. I love Sebastien de Castell's writing, Greatcoats is a must read for any Three Musketeers fan.
It's for sure in my top 3 seasons of TV. Sun Eater and Five Warrior Angels are two books high up on my list! Thanks for the rec. Totally agree about de Castell! Can't wait to see what his next series is like. Ed
Great wrap-up as always! You guys are so good at articulating your thoughts on all of these books, I just love it. Also, now I am suddenly really in the mood to reread Malice, haha. Glad to hear you both had a great month! 🤩
The tension in the room whenever there's a mention of Silmarillion's fallibility, lol. I too read Malice last month and loved it, I swear during the last part I was sweating with worry that my favourite character wouldn't make it. Best of luck with your test Will.
@@thebrothersgwynne For Malice definitely Gar, I knew he was more than he seemed! Now as we move into Valour I also much enjoy Cywen and Veradis' parts. The latter feels like a decent man caught in the wrong place to me, and I'm looking forward to seeing in which direction his character develops.
You'll have to check out Scalped by Jason Aaron...yes, it's a graphic novel series....A crime drama set on a reservation.....give it a shot, you'll be glad you did.
Great content as usual guys. After taking a longer than necessary hiatus from reading I finally wrapped up the Age of Madness trilogy and find myself about halfway through book 3 of The Prince of Nothing trilogy. You two should absolutely pick up The Prince of Nothing trilogy. Also I have a suggestion I think Ed would enjoy. Check out Hombre by Elmore Leonard sometime when you have a spot for a short book. It was also was made into a movie with Paul Newman.
Great line up. That makes me even more excited to start on the Last War and the Greatcoats (likely won’t be before early 2023…) I read quite a bit in July, about a dozen books, and some of those really standing out would be Sword Song (Cornwell), A Shadow in Summer (Daniel Abraham), The Forever War (Joe Haldeman), but my favourite of the month was Jade War by Fonda Lee. A bit of an ambitious schedule for August, so far I’m done with Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, Dawn by Octavia Butler, and I’m now tackling Eversion by Alastair Reynolds which so far is like an intriguing mix of Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin and The Twilight Zone-very fun. Next on the list will be Malice, and the seventh book of The Dark Tower. I also have a volume of Zola’s Rougon-Macquart to read, and book 4 of Rivers of London. The rest is a bit open to mood and impulses.
I hope you enjoy them when you get to them! Sword Song is great, so glad you enjoyed it! I still need to get to the Green Bone Saga. Good luck with your reading for August, and we hope you love Malice as much as we do! Ed
I don't think the two of you ever have a bad reading month. I managed to read a whopping grand total of 3 books. It was quite a feat considering my husband was on vacation and we were traveling a bit with our 3 kids. Lol! I read The Mad Ship (such a fantastic series), The Last Time I Lied, and A Natural History of Dragons. I enjoyed all three.
The Alan Lee illustrated hardcovers are simply sublime. I feel there's no need for any new reissuing, they should just print those. I have the boxed set + Unfinished Tales and plan on getting all of them.
I wish I could read as much as you guys, my TBR pile wouldn't take over my office. I only managed In the Shadow of Lightning and am half way through Against All God's.. And I was on holiday with more time to read 😂 Good luck for when you take your theory Will!
Great reading month! I just went to my local bookstore to get a copy of Daughter of Redwinter, but they were all sold out, so I guess I will have to fight over a copy now. But I found a copy of We Are the Dead, so I will get to that soon!
In my previous comment I should have mentioned I read: Among Thieves by M J Kuhn, The Lion by Conn Iggulden, Daughter of Redwinter by Ed McDonald, The Collarbound by Rebecca Zahabi, The Last Blade Priest by WP Wiles, Son of Mercia by MJ Porter and The Skin by JE Hannaford. Really enjoyed all of the books
Nearly finished reading Until the Last (will finish it this morning). So glad you recommended this. How are you finding it? I really need to read some of Sebastian De Castell’s books, as you appear to rate this like Evan Winter and Mike Shackle’s books, which I thoroughly enjoyed
Will is loving Until The Last! He's about 100 pages in and keeps looking at me with a shocked smile. I can't wait to get to it. De Castell is a fantastic writer, alongside Winter and Shackle! Ed
In July I read, an admittedly absurd amount, but I was already a quite a way through some of them by the start of the month: *Fantasy* Black Company - Glen Cook Four Revelations - R Scott Bakker (short story) - I read this twice and still haven't a clue what happened lol Long Price Quartet 1: Shadow in Summer *Historical-Fiction* Bernard Cornwell's Grail Quest Trilogy - Huge miss for me, mostly cuz of Book 3. Song of Kali - Dan Simmons *Sci-Fi* Ogres - Adrian Tchaikovsky (novella) - This might be my favourite novella I've ever read. One Day All This Will Be Yours - Adrian Tchaikovsky (novella) - Pretty fun take on time-travel.
That is completely putting us to shame! Some great books there. So glad you loved Gates of Fire. I'll agree that the Grail Quest is not all that. I remember enjoying I am Legend when I read it years ago. Great list and happy reading for August! Ed
Have you guys read "book of the new sun" or have it on your tbr? I have seen little to no reviews of it on booktube but it seems all writer's love it and was curious to give it a go but don't see much review on it
I might have asked you this in past videoes (and if so, I am very sorry to repeat myself), but have either of you fine gents read 1) “The Kalevala” (The Finnish National Epic that heavily inspired Tolkien) or 2) Anything by Paolo Bacigalupi (“The Windup Girl”, “The Water Knife”, “The Tangled Lands”, mostly Post-Apocalyptic Cyberpunk but “Tangled” is Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy”)?

Apt Pupil is a very important read, IMO. Maybe folks will see why we shouldn't throw some of those terms around so lightly.
The Tyrant's Throne cover is really nice. Glad you guys had a wonderful month of reading. Truth and courage!
I really like The Greatcoats covers. Thanks for watching mate! Truth and courage.

My mother loves the first season of the show
We both completely agree!!!

For a really good movie set on a reservation try Wind River.
Also the TV series Longmire is excellent. Some of the crimes are on a reservation.

Any plans of starting up the upcoming book releases presented by the authors again? I loved watching those.
We will definitely get back to it at some point. It is lots of organising so we need to plan in advance - something we're not known for😂
