Tim Burton and Danny Elfman should write all our musicals from now on. There's something about these songs that makes them fit into the scene so well, unlike High School Musical, where they just start singing and dancing for no apparent reason. Plus, they're dark enough so that they aren't a pathetic excuse to stop the action. Btw Victoria looks like a person I know.

(continuing) So when Barkis shows up, the Everglots are more willing to marry their daughter off to him because (they assumed) he had the status and wealth.
Money does not automatically create status. Status usually refers to your breeding and position within society. The Everglots are Lords, a quite high rank in European Aristocracy. It's that position that comes first and formost, but money is still something that is vital like anyone else.
I don't understand why the Van Dorts got into the carriage to go to the house when it was so close that the Everglots could see them through their window?
@Pocketwatch625 maybe, but I also wonder why the carriage ride took so long? They were going literally right across the street, they shouldn't have been in that coach for more than 2 seconds.
@tharailwaydra It's set in the Victorian times. When you came from a wealthy family in the 1800s, you usually fell victim to an "arranged marriage". Well-off Victorians rarely married for love.
I think he means that she is beautiful compared to the rest of her family. Also, she is a little bit strong willed compared to her mother so that is what they might have meant as well.

@Pennywisea Because "poor" to an aristocrat is having an income of less that 2000 pounds every month. They can afford the house, but they can't support the lifestyle.
technically, the ever golts would still be rich, they're aristocrats. back then, if you were rich, you had a ton of servants, but they only got 2. the reason why the van dorts didnt go to parties is because they're nouveau riche. the english thought that they didnt have stauts. they were just wealthy, they weren't like king and queens.
