@@linusdn2777 I'm honestly not familiar with Oprah (I know who she is, I've just never watched any of her stuff being from the UK), but it sounds to me like she started out with a trashy Jerry Springer/Jeremy Kyle kind of talk show that exploited vulnerable or fame-hungry people for views.
@@linusdn2777 he was saying that in the early days of the Oprah show, Oprah was doing whatever she had to do to stay on air. The Oprah show had a bit with little people and domestic disputes. Could someone kind explain to me this stuff about Oprah and midgets that killed Conan? I'm from Spain, I love this extract even without understanding it!
Erredemé Back when Oprah first started out in the 80s and didn’t have much power in show business, she had to do silly and outrageous topics and interviews on her show as a way to try to grab attention and ratings. Similar stuff to the Jerry Springer Show. Now she has a large following and much more leverage to do whatever kind of show she wants, but when she first started out, she “stood on the heads of those little people” (which means to use them for your own gain) so that she could build a fan base and have the power to get to the next level in show business. Bill Burr was saying that Lance Armstrong did the same thing when he took steroids to win races, and Bill thought it was silly that Oprah couldn’t believe that someone in show business would do something crazy like that to get to the next level.
Alright, thanks for the answer. But... the midgets who want to bang the mailman's boyfriend? That's the thing i didn't grasp! - I mean, I understand english but I have no "TV culture".
Erredemé That’s along the same vein of outrageous topics she needed to get ahead. “You sister is secretly a man who is now sleeping with your husband!” “Midgets wants to bang their mailman’s boyfriend!” “Your boss has a crush on you!” Things like that. Bill is saying she didn’t always have integrity and class in her show topics, but she did what she needed to get ahead, just like Lance Armstrong did. So she did not have moral high ground to call him out on his actions. “Midgets wanting to bang their mailman’s boyfriend” is slang for “little people who want to sleep with their mailman’s boyfriend”. Just a silly topic
+Ben Dover I don't think anyone current comedian can do the "one way conversation" better than Bill Burr. He's doing scripted stand up, but in a way that is incredibly natural.

Sinking cruise ships on a random basis still seems like a policy at least worth considering...
Oprah Winfrey's show nowadays is different from the past. It was trashy, full of adultery and lowbrow gossip. She got rich on the backs of society's freaks and losers.
Bill Burr has a perfect voice for comedy. He sounds like a somewhat hysteric and frustrated cartoon character, like he could be the leader of a half-hearted pitchfork mob that gives up at the sight of free nachos. Perhaps only Trey Parker has a funnier voice.

Hey, Jimmy Fallon! This is how you treat comedians like Bill Burr. Shut up and let them talk. Do not jump in every other word trying to "share" the moment. Respect them enough to pull the focus from you for a few seconds. I tried watching the Bill Burr rant on Fallon about Christmas and Fallon stepped all over it. Conan understands letting comedians go. Burr isn't some open mic-er; he's a talented artist. He doesn't need the training wheels.
The difference between Bill Burr and 99% of all other top-comedians, is that Bill Burr is a genuinely funny guy. He doesn't need a rehearsed routine to be extremely funny, it just comes naturally to him in conversation. Imagine having a night out with him when he's in the zone. Good god, I'd never want the night to end!
Dennis Stuhr Bill Burr and Louis CK are definitely my favorites. Louis CK's latest stand up didn't do it for me and neither did Burr's "Why Do I Do This?" So I'd say they're probably about neck and neck rn. At least in my opinion they are.
For those not getting the midget reference: Oprah's original talk show was very Jerry Springer/Maury Povich like, before those guys came on the scene. It was just a trashy daytime talk show, far removed from what her show and image eventually became.
If there ever was a sociopath in sports, it was definitely Lance Armstrong. Cheating is one thing but threatening and humiliating each and everyone around oneself is a whole different story.
I love how just when Conan is able to breathe from laughing at the midget line, Bill hits him with the "heads of the little people" line. And then, when Conan recovers from that, he hits him with the "sociopath on a bike" line. An even better clip is the one where Bill talks about Jeffrey Dahmer and Conan loses his mind. If I'm not mistaken, it's on the clip where Bill goes off about airports.
If it isn't the best performance by a talk show guest ever, it's certainly in the Top 10. Pure brilliance. Poor Conan can't keep himself together :) Absolute joy to watch :)
I'm assuming this is a boring UK vs USA comment so lets talk about something else. It's interesting that well-known American comedians usually represent a lower/middle-class viewpoint -- so Mr. Harvard up there will always downplay his education at every turn and talks about his Irish Catholic upbringing instead. Meanwhile English comic personalities often skew towards being eccentric provocateurs or having an intellectual superiority shtick or both (Russell Brand). So Ricky Gervais is from the home counties and has a whole lot of takes that are more or less the same as Bill Burr, but instead of Burr's whole "eh, maybe it's just me" routine Ricky Gervais has to be the smartest man in the room at all times and wants you to know it and gets weirdly derailed if someone happens to think otherwise. Thoughts? Fwiw I actually like Gervais more, despite his acting career being garbage for 15 years now and Burr kind of on the ascent these days.
@@razjml thoughts? OK I have one, Bill Burr is one of the absolute best comedians of this era, and has been for quite a while. He’s on top, not on the ascent, already on top.
@@razjml My thoughts are that you are really missing out on some top-notch British comedy. I love watching Ricky Gervais and I love watching Bill Burr even more. But there's a whole spectrum of British comedians who all have a particular style that are just so great to watch. I don't particularly care for Graham Norton but if it's talkshows he has some interesting British comedians on. British panelshows is where the real fun is at though. 8 out of 10 cats, would I lie to you, the two seasons of Nevermind the Buzzcocks when Simon Amstell hosted. Let me see, you have: would I lie to you(WILTY), big fat quiz(some great American guests too!), was it something I said, QI(bit brainier, not always my cup of tea), argumental when it was still at the BBC. Really recommend any of those. Not American or British myself btw, I think there's a lot to appreciate in both countries when it comes to comedy. I'd recommend some Dutch/Flemish comedians, but I don't think their material makes much sense for non-Dutch speakers.
This and the Norm MacDonald one with Courtney Thorne-Smith are probably my top two, followed closely by Dave Foley talking about the restaurant idea. Not surprising that all of them took place on Conan's show.

Meaning she used the little people and their issues to get further in her career.

-
I mean, I understand english but I have no "TV culture".
Every line delivered is better than the last. This guy is brilliant.
+Ben Dover I don't think anyone current comedian can do the "one way conversation" better than Bill Burr. He's doing scripted stand up, but in a way that is incredibly natural.

Bill Burr has a perfect voice for comedy. He sounds like a somewhat hysteric and frustrated cartoon character, like he could be the leader of a half-hearted pitchfork mob that gives up at the sight of free nachos. Perhaps only Trey Parker has a funnier voice.

When doctors first discovered steroids they didn't even think of them as something to be used in professional sports.
I love Conan and Bill Burr moments. Cause despite Conan trying to be a neutral figure who doesn't have opinions on anything controversial, you can see he clearly agrees with a lot of what Bill Burr says.
