When I got the call about this one I happened to be close by so I stopped in to try and see what these folks had living in their attic. They had something they thought were honey bees living in a dormer of their daughter's bedroom. They had already had this problem once a year or so prior but someone else was called out for that one. They couldn't remember the guy's name, only that he called himself the bee whisperer. By the time "the bee whisperer" was done with whatever he did they were very displeased with the mess he left and they didn't want him back. They weren't certain if what he had removed were honey bees or yellow jackets. This time they called around to several pest control companies and were referred to me.
When I inspected their home I was expecting a honey bee hive. From the outside I couldn't see anything flying because they were entering in a location that wasn't visible from the ground. They were coming in through the roof at the back edge of a dormer. Inspecting from the inside I found that the heat signature my FLIR was showing was not typical of a honey bee hive. Also the lady of the house had found a dead yellow jacket on the stairs which she had wrapped in a tissue and showed me to confirm what it was. At that point I told her they should have a pest control company deal with the problem but they had already discussed the possibility of it being yellow jackets and had decided they wanted the hive completely removed regardless of what it was. They were on a bit of a time crunch as well since the house was being reroofed and the roofing crew wouldn't start until the "bees" were gone.
I called Stuntman Pete to ask if he wanted to join hoping it was honey bees but I was very clear up front that I was ninety nine percent certain they were going to be yellow jackets. Pete said "OK it'll be and adventure and I've never done yellow jackets before". I said it sure will be an adventure and as you can see it really was.
The reaction you can see that I had from that sting in the face is NOT an allergic reaction. That is very normal from a sting to a nerve center like that. I could feel the effects of the venom into my upper gums and sinus cavities. You can hear in the video that breathing through my nose was slightly affected. I did take a Benadryl and the swelling in my face was fully gone by mid day the following day but for the next two days after that the inside of my lip felt like I had been eating salt and vinegar chips. If you want to know what that's like try the Lays brand chips for the full effect. The swelling from the couple of stings I got in the forearms took about two and a half days to go away. Pete started experiencing swelling later that night but was fine by the following night.
In the end we got the job done. We left some very satisfied customers and we got this funny video but more than all that we have another great story to tell. I hope you enjoyed it.

Yellow jackets are the only thing I've ever been stung by. I made the mistake of picking up a dead one as a kid. I'll never do that again. LOL! I also stuck my hand in a nest that was in a hole beside where I was sitting years ago. That was fun. My uncle had 4-5 boxes of bees in his yard growing up that I was around constantly and never got stung by them.

Welcome to the “Bee Suit Test Institute”. Today we’ll see two of our experienced test engineers demonstrate how to determine if your bee suit is yellow jacket proof. Notice how the scientists hit themselves in the head and face, indicating that the suit being tested must not be yellow jacket proof. The final determination of suit quality is measured by the psi of the engineer’s upper lip at the completion of the test.

These were a type of eusocial wasps commonly called Yellow Jackets. Yellow Jackets, even though commonly called "ground bees" in different parts of the country, aren't bees at all.

I was a teenager and was visiting a school for some activity during the summer when the school was closed for summer vacation. I walked around a corner of a building and directly in my face, just a few inches away, was a huge hornets nest hanging down from the eve with dozens of hornets swirling around it. I ducked down and almost fell flat on my back moving backward in a jump and was not stung, thankfully. You do not ever want that to happen to you!!!

Great job removing them good for nothing pests from that residence. That reminds me.......Now that it's freezing cold outside, I have to take down a few of them nests from underneath the garage eave, & burn them!

When I was a teenager, one day I was skating at the skatepark and I had a can of coke and I opened it, took a drink then set it on top the quarter pipe and skated off then few minutes later I came back to it, took a drink then bam felt immediate pain as I watched a yellow jacket climb out the mouth of the can. My lip swelled up to the size of an apple slice. I still to this day always inspect every nook and cranny of pop cans before taking a drink if it’s been outside.
