Lynch is right about going to see a movie without knowing anything about it. My best movie experiences have been when I go in with no expectations or foreknowledge.
Agreed. Unfortunately I am usually the one picking out the movie so I rarely have that. Also, its hard to not see the trailers. Even if you ignore tv, you see them before your movie starts.
Hollywood: you can't make a movie without sex, violence, and foul language.
Lynch: I give you the straight story... Rated G.

everyone always paints Lynch as some crackpot weirdo, and yet he's able to fluidly describe his process and the goals of his films in 60 seconds.
Ignorant people love giving their uninformed opinions.
Brian Kish he's too common sense and direct for most people.
He's 'weird' because he's probably on the spectrum.
People are surprised by the Straight Story, but honestly? David Lynch always has an emotional centerpiece in stories to hang everything on. Eraserhead? Story about a man going through a shit marriage and childbirth as his world crumbles. Mulholland Drive? Story about a woman going through and having her life ruined by experiences and actions take on or near Mulholland Drive (aka Hollywood).
He makes a story with a central emotional theme and tries to plan out which 'dreamy' sequences work best at telling that weird story. That's it. The Straight Story is a purely emotional story from the heart by Lynch, but without any surrealist dreaming attached...it's told _straightly_ . Ahaha..haha...haha.
Is amazing how much he did just directing the movie
He hasn't wrote, he just directed.
And it is cool to see Lynch doing something else than just trippy flicks
He did The Elephant man, Blue Velvet, Dune and The straight story... they're not that batshit crazy

@@ryanarcher9881 But its not just a trippy flick, it has weird elements to it but the characters are all fantastically real. I find that with most Lynch films (and Twin Peaks) tbf, what makes his surrealism so effective is how human and real it all is at the same time.
His best film, in my opinion. A masterpiece.
Def my favorite Lynch film aside from Fire Walk With Me. Pure human emotion. So genuine and beautiful.
Extremely beautiful and powerful film. The soundtrack was perfect.

I did not know what to expect. It was sooo provocative in the most sweetest way. I cried.
The Straight Story: simply more proof of David Lynch's genius.
It was one of my favorites that few people know about. I actually didn't realize lynch had directed it when I saw it or maybe I just hadn't seen his other stuff yet.

The Straight Story is such a beautiful story and how he handled that with such delicacy and vulnerability made it so special. He did it great justice. Especially with how he captured folks who live in middle America. Despite its sad undertones, there’s an apparent charm and beauty with the story and characters.
This movie is one of my top 3 all time faourites.world's fastest indian and this one.and maybe forrest gump.Never heard of mr. Farnsworth before or after.I know he died not long after this.I just want to tell his family that this is perfect acting to me.this is it...I don't know what rating this movie has and no-one buys movies anymore but I bought this movie.

Makes perfect sense to me. That's how I would envision Lynch if I didn't knew him through other means than his movies.
This film is as beautiful as Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven.

Critics like to pigeonhole people. Saying this movie isn't typical Lynchian fare is ridiculous because he chose to direct it for all the right reasons. David said that Richard Farnsworth was " born to play the role. " How true!

The Straight Story is basically the antithesis of his weirder flicks. Heartwarming and very touching
well at least hollywood directors make movies the makes sense... at least some of them
