The Straight Story has a bit of the dry humor of other Lynch films, but otherwise it feels completely foreign to his other works. That’s honestly the most impressive thing about Lynch’s direction in that film is that it proves he could make literally any movie great as long as he cared about the story.
I think there's more to it than just dry humour they makes it "lynchian" - the Americana, the long drawn out pauses and room to breathe and think, a purity of heart.... Oh and of course Angelo Badalamenti. I'm sure there's more but that's whats coming to my mind right now.
Something i really dislike about A LOT of directors as well as big name actors is they make the same basic sort of movie over and over, and I think that is sort of boring at the least but more so says you are not really that artistic or creative. i have personally never cared for either Quentin Tarantino or Tim Burton and i also think it is sort of lame that they make the same basic film over and over, just the same as i do not like Tom Cruise for playing the same basic action star for decades. David Lynch is not my favorite director and i find a lot of his weird films just boring, but he is also capable of doing films like this and the Elephant Man as well as Twin Peaks, all of which i LOVE. so i give ALL respect to him for actually being versatile and being able to make a film that "is not a real David Lynch film".
His films don't often hit these notes, but there is sentiment and a kind of loving kindness that runs through to some degree in all of his films. No problem accepting this film just because there's less viscera.
@@martalire I had to pause and think about it for a sec. I feel that The Straight Story is probably the most Lynchian of his films because the film illustrates Lynch's juxtaposing of sinister elements against everyday mundanity without the thematic and visual flourishes that he has counted on in the past. In other words, this film has all his themes and shows them in the simplest and most straight forward way.
@@elichilton7031 thank you so much for taking the time, although I don't entirely agree, I get the point. as lynch says, the interpretation of his films depends on the eyes that see them.
I was at a social gathering recently and the topic of conversation became...name your two favorite movies of all time. I mentioned my 2 favorites: Robert Bresson's, Diary of a Country Priest and David Lynch's, A Straight Story. There was not one person in the room of 20 that was familiar with either film. Sad.
Masterpiece. It is a “real” David Lynch film.
Gorgeous, deeply moving masterpiece.

Watched it today, and I was bawling several times because it was so beautiful
You could see & feel him wearing his heart on his sleeve while watching this film.
Dear David: Please make The Straight Story available to rent or purchase in Canada!!!! Aching to rewatch this on the 25th anniversary.

The Straight Story is a marvelous film. It is quite possibly the most "Lynchian" film that he has ever made.
interesting, could you elaborate on that?

I love this man so much
Only Lynch movie I've yet to see.

It makes a good "last" movie, I will give you that! I think if you've caught all the other Lynch films, you'll appreciate at least a lot about it.
I wish Lynch would do more "normal" films like The Straight Story (normal for lack of a better work).
❤
His best
