- How to start a gardening business for under £1k. I will walk you through my idea of making my side hustle garden business a full time job, but on a very tight budget. This will hopefully show you how to by cheap garden tools, how to garden efficiently and generally how to garden. I have never been a full time gardener but have always gardened as a hobby and as a small side hustle business for friends, family & neighbours. I do have a lot of experience and also knowledge from both my parents who were market gardeners, I also have a diploma in Horticulture that I took ten years ago.
Thank you for watching, please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. I will endeavour to respond to you all.

Nice work Matthew hoepfully yes tell the man where to go on ya mate
Cheers buddy. Always grateful of the support from pro's like yourself. Just need a little of your nice weather now to get the season flying. Hope you're well.
BOOM! You smashed it bro.
Cheers Darren. "Smashed it", maybe a little premature, but we're are going in the right direction. Thanks again.
Hi Matthew,
Interesting content im sure you can make money pretty quickly,as you are already doing ,and without the cost of a van at the moment your profits can be good...
I hope you manage to continue with your business, and succeed in going forward, with the intention of doing it full time...
Lee....😊
Cheers for the comment Lee and kind words. Yeah, everything is definitely going in the right direction. I'm still really surprised at how much the phone has kept ringing through the winter. I'm under no elusion that profits will shrink when a vehicle has to be purchased with all the added overheads that entails. Thanks again.
Just seen this, just subbed. Look forward to watching your journey. I have a garden services business, doing well. Wouldn't change a thing. Youll build your equipment up as time goes on, and your customers. This time next year your video will be you talking about your year in a positive manner im sure. 🤞👍🌲🏴
Thanks for the kind positive words and fir subscribing. Just need to get my head around going full time with it this year, or doing a full year as a side hustle to build it up and then go in 26.
I’m thinking about starting my own when I leave my current job in August. Do you really need all Stihl equipment or would you recommend other cheaper brands and build up over time?
@@newcombe41 Cheers for the comment. Not at all, you could easily get started with far cheaper equipment and still do a really good job. Good equipment just makes a job a little easier and sometimes quicker. But if you're not taking pride in your work and wanting to do a good job, it doesn't matter how good or expensive your equipment is. I know a local gardener who pretty much goes to his local B&Q to buy all his mowers and tools. When they stop working, he gets rid and just goes back and buys new again. He has a really successful business because he does a great job, not because of the brand of tools he uses. I use Stihl because its pretty reliable but the main reason is because of my local dealership. I can take in any second-hand equipment I might have bought on ebay and they will get it up and running like new. They also give me great deals on their second-hand and ex demo stuff. Not a lot of point in buying stihl if you haven't got the local after sales. That's what your paying the extra for in my view. Good luck with it buddy.
@@newcombe41 Thanks for the comment. You go for it. You definitely don't need stihl or another fancy brand. Good tools help make the work easier and sometimes quicker, but it's more important to have pride in your work and doing a really good job. I have a local gardener near me, who buys all his mowers and equipment from B&Q, when it stops working, he gets rid and goes back and buys new again. He has one of the most successful gardening businesses in the area because he does a good job no matter of the brand of tool in his hand. My main reason for using stihl is because of the local dealership near me. I can buy nearly dead gear from ebay and the guys at the dealership will have it running like new for a few quid. They also do me great deals on the second hand or ex display kit. Get a good solid mower (better than my little mountfield) and a multi tool to start with, that is all you really need apart from hand tools. Depending on what gardening market you're aiming at, just build up gradually, as and when you can afford it. Definitely don't be sucked in by deals for tools that you may never use, they just become expensive ornaments.
@ Brilliant thank you so much for your reply. Going to use all these tips!
Love the concrpt starting from scratch
Thanks for the comment Jason.
Just found your channel..i have just set one up last month although been doing the job a while. I started mine up for around 700 quid one august including transport. 2nd hand cheap tools, 2000 flyers and a free fb page.
I wish you all the best. Thank you for your comment.
Hello mate, Nice little video , Sorry I have been busy, I have a wife and three children , And a butt tonne of customers to look after , as well as making UA-cam video's, Thanks for the shout outs and good luck with the gardening channel , Looks like you are off to a banging start. Made a little short for you today , I thought it was going to run for 3 minute's , but would not go up as three minute short 🤣
All The Best
Steve 🧀
I have commented on your video Steve, that is hugely generous of you and Marra, really appreciated. Glad your feeling a little better and no need to explain about having a busy schedule, modern life eh. Thanks again.
Very informative will be watching from now on.
Thanks Andy, much appreciated. Episode 7 just uploaded this morning. I apologies in advance as its a bit negative. Fingers crossed things will be looking up by the time I publish the next video. Thanks again for the kind comment.
Good luck i wish you all the best
Its a great way of life
Hi Paul, thanks for the kind wishes, fingers crossed 2025 will be the year I can really push on with it. Have a fantastic New Year.
Good info, ty. I started about 12 months ago, was in building /plastering since high school. I have been doing kind of part time while still skimming. I was going to concentrate more in the new year to fully swap to gardening, as thought doing it over winter the work load drops off. Your video has been really helpfull, and also encouraged the "why wait for next year" in my mind. Good luck and looking forward to more content on the progress.
Thanks for the comment. I guess you can plan as much as you want but the clock is always ticking in the background. Sometimes you just have to go for it. The benefit of having the plastering gig in your back pocket is always going to be a plus if times get a little tight. Good luck to you too,
Just found the channel, great honest first offering and looking forward to catching up with your future posts (or whatever they call them).
You seem to be following exactly the same people as me, they have given me so much info too, although I still haven’t taken the plunge and started a business yet. One day I’ll get all my ducks in a row and take the leap, look forward to seeing your progress. Good luck and peace out and all that young person stuff ✌🏻
Hi Andy, cheers for the comment. I think if it's something you really want to do you just have to go for it. I'm quite lucky that I'm able to start part time and work my way in gradually, but sometimes you just have to just have to have faith in your own abilities and just go for it. Have a great Christmas.
Good luck. All the best
Thanks for the nice wishes John. Fingers crossed it will all go well. No doubt with a few ups and downs on the way.
Good luck i started when i was 54, and done well enough out of it, nothing better than being your own gaffer. I will be interested in seeing how you get on. There will be plenty of🤣🫣🤔🍺👍 on the way.
Thanks for the comment. Fingers crossed things well grow well and I'm able to move into it full-time.
Good luck 👍
Thanks Andy, much appreciated. 👍
Interesting video. Look forward to the next one.
Thanks for the comment. New video should be uploaded tonight. Let me know if you want any particular content going forward. I would prefer the channel to be led by the people watching rather than me just blathering on. Thanks again.👍
@theconstantgardener71 video reminds me of when I started out 35 years ago with a mortgage two children and about £300 in the bank, I handed in my notice at work and worried for the next few weeks it all turned out OK in the end.
@@gunton21 Sometimes you just have to take the chance and believe in your own ability. Well done.
Thanks for the shout out and good luck with the new business and the UA-cam channel.... neither are easy unless I'm doing it wrong 😂 Us 'lifers' often wish we had a safe job.... maybe my second career will be in an office 🤔😅 were you at Groundsfest? Again good luck and any advice I might be able to offer hit me up👍
Cheers Nath👍 Yeah, safe is great to a certain point, it just sort of reminds me of condoms! No I didn't make ground fest, didn't trust myself looking at new shiny gear. Thanks for the kind words and I may need your sage advice, so thanks again.
Keep it up
Thank you Ethan. Fingers crossed another video on the way soon.
That looks little a very good hedge trimmer.
It does the job.👍
Good luck with your journey matey. Wish you the best of luck. When the budget allows see if there’s a little parish magazine or local newspaper in your area. Also I use Imovie for editing it’s fairly. Idiot proof. I can cope with it. Best of luck.
Thanks so much Sam. Always great hearing from people in the trade who I respect. Definitely need to expand my marketing strategy past google and Facebook into something like a parish magazine etc. Thanks again
You didn't include the cost of registering your company or didn't you bother 🤣
Hi Matthew, great name by the way. No I haven't, I am running as a sole trader at the moment. Fingers crossed if this can become something better then maybe I can look at possibly Ltd status and VAT registration. Thanks for watching and for the comment.👍
