  • Previous episode - Christmas at the Dolly Sods: • Backpacking the Dolly ...
A 2-night, 20 mile hike on and around the Adventure Hiking Trail in southern Indiana. Due to trail reroutes, navigational issues, and time constraints, we only spent about half our time on the official AHT. We parked at the Pioneer Cabin, spent the first night at Lloyd's Shelter, cached water near the O'Bannon Woods Gatehouse, and spent the second night at the Hog Barn Primitive Site. Recorded January 28-30, 2022.

Loved that overlook of the River. Beautiful hiking trail. Staying in that old barn was interesting. Nice to see you out there with Nick and Samuel. Cool video 👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks Jason! I appreciate you taking the time to check it out. I wish I would have gotten a shot of the river at night. The lights were something to see. The hog barn was right up there with the weirdest places I've camped, haha. I'd recommend it though! I don't know what I'd do without Nick and Samuel. They're the best.

Very cool! My grandfather was born down in there back in 1918 before the state took it over and it was still Scott Township.
    I really enjoyed the video!

Love these type 2 adventures! That hog barn was something else. I'm always impressed by how much good footage you're able to come away with from each trip. I really enjoyed the first morning sequence. The play of light and breath in the shelter. The context shot of the thermo. The rising sun and the barge through the trees. It was 👌 Once again you've got me itching to get out and shoot more. Can't wait to see what you do next!!

Thank you very much! We seem to get ourselves into a lot of Type 2 situations, haha. I really enjoyed that first morning sequence too, both in the moment and in editing. We ended up getting a late start that day because it was hard to leave that spot. Hopefully we'll both be out there again soon with our cameras. I'm about to start working on a Smoky Mountains video that I'm really looking forward to. Till next time!

What a great hike. Love that pretty view of the water below. Interesting that you camped out in an old hog barn. I feel like I would have had to turn back rather than crossed that railroad bridge. I would have been afraid my clumsy self would have slipped off and fallen through the gap. We enjoy a bit of snow camping. But I'm a bit more of a glamper lol. So we take our cargo build when we snow camp. Ok I giggled a bit when the camera took a nose dive.

    • @beyondthecampfire
      @beyondthecampfire  2 роки тому +1

The barn was definitely one of the most interesting places I've ever slept. Fortunately, we didn't have to cross the bridge: Nick just wanted to tempt fate and walk halfway across, haha. I stayed off! It was too cold for a swim! Nothing wrong with glamping in the snow. I'll jump over and check out your channel. Thanks for watching!

Wow great video, lots of excellent shots along the way. Me and some buddies will be hiking this trail soon and we can’t wait! Any tips you’d like to pass along or things to watch out for? Great job!

    • @beyondthecampfire

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I can think of two things to watch out for: 1. It's a pretty dry trail, so you might want to consider caching water if you're going to be out there for a while. 2. If you're looking for the hog barn, beware that there is no signage for it. There are blazes and arrows painted on trees, but they're easy to miss if you're not watching out for them. Let me know if you have any other questions, and enjoy your hike!

I have to say, for this to be one of your “shorter” BTC episodes, you packed so many good shots and a complete story within this trip! Fantastic job, your skills with that big chungus camera grow with every trip, I keep being utterly impressed by the quality of the footage. I enjoyed this viewing very much and have especially watched the bloopers section probably 4 or 5 times by now!
On to my more specific thoughts of things I enjoyed:
-0:25 Always love that shiny, sparkling snow in the dark that is illuminated when our headlamps flash over it.
-1:03 One of many amazing sun star shots I this video. You gotta teach me that filming skill!
-1:17 YAS! The parody! So glad you included this.
-1:26 Wow your zoom on your camera is so crisp! The barge on the river is one of my favorite shots from this video, surprisingly. It feels like a border between civilization and the wilderness that is floating away before our eyes. Lowkey didn’t even see the barge when we were there haha
-1:45 That foggy breath inside the cabin was intense!
-1:55 The camp shoes make their debut! #comfyfeet
-3:23 Love this background river shot
-4:05 These shaking shadows of the beech leaves is really cool
-4:15 Love this forested tunnel shot
-4:43 And after this mushroom shot, all h*ll broke loose off trail hahahaha. Thanks again for helping me find my camera, I couldn’t have done it without you!
    -5:03 ROBUSTO!
-5:17 I loved this overlook. Still kind of kicking myself that I didn’t pull my drone out again for it haha
-6:22 Those baby calves look so suspicious of you filming them lol
    -6:47 Epic sun star #2
-7:28 This slightly sideways angle fits the eerie vibe that Hog Barn gave off
-7:56 It’s so crazy how dark the inside of that barn was, even with some available daylight left!
-8:17 That is a big chungus bag, right there
    -8:20 TWSS
    -9:19 Epic sun star #3
-9:28 New take on “Pig in a blanket” with our abode for the night haha
-9:46 Love this dilapidated roof shot
-10:34 That morning fire and trail cakes were pure ecstasy
-11:20 The hand rubbing to create friction for heat fits that whole barn vibe so well. It had a lingering, damp coldness in there
-12:20 This aerial footage you got from the top of the tower is as good or better than what I could get with a drone! Nice captures!
-14:15 That feeling of arriving at our vehicles at the end of the trip is so satisfying to watch, even after the fact haha
-14:48 The lighting was impeccable for this brewery sequence. Who says the GH5 can’t handle low light?!
    -BEST BLOOPER REEL YET!
Thanks for taking the time and effort to create such a fun memory of the Type B adventure we embarked on that weekend. I had a blast! Can’t wait for the next one!

Thanks so much! I am feeling more and more comfortable with Big Chungus, and I’m really looking forward to using it in non-frigid, non-rainy conditions again, haha. I’m glad to hear you felt like this was a complete episode, despite no narration and the shorter length. I had my doubts, but I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out.
      - The night hike with the sparkling snow was one of my favorite parts of the trip. I’m hoping for another snowy night hike in the future.
      - Just stop down your aperture to somewhere between f/14 and f/22 for those sunbursts 😉
      - No one else has said anything about the title yet. They probably just think I’m stupid 😅
      - I think the barge passed while you were still in your sleeping bag! 😝 It’s one of my favorite shots too. I like the pattern of dark trees overlaying it.
      - Thanks again for the camp shoes! I’m loving them already. I can’t believe I went years without trying them.
      - You’re welcome! There’s no way we were leaving you and your camera behind! I wish I could have captured my relief when we found it!
      - 🧀
      - Oh you’re right, this would have been a good drone opportunity too. That reminds me that I’m really looking forward to seeing your drone shots of the river. They looked incredible on your phone.
      - It’s funny you say that about the titled hog barn, because that’s exactly the purpose of the Dutch angle.
      - Can’t believe I missed this excellent TWSS!
      - And now I realize this video is missing a “pig in a blanket” pun from you!
      - You are really spoiling us with those trailcakes. They’re even better on a cold morning. And that morning fire was perfection.
      - I’m glad you like my fake-drone shots 😉
      - The arrival-at-the-vehicles scene is essential! I always enjoy re-living that feeling.
      - Yeah, not bad in low light, right? I had to mess around with it in post a little to reduce the graininess, but I’m not unhappy with it. I need to try my actual low-light lens in these situations, though, haha.
      - Thanks for providing excellent blooper material 🤣
And thanks also for making the cold tolerable and for keeping away the ghosts in the hog barn. Here’s to warmer adventures in the near future and even colder ones beyond that 🍻

@@beyondthecampfire woah I had never heard of a Dutch angle before, but that’s really cool that my untrained film brained picked up on it, regardless! And shoot dude the RX100 VII only goes down to an f/ stop of f4.5😬Maybe I should have gone with the mirrorless option after all haha.
Can’t wait for the next adventure, and for a weekend that’s hopefully full of “fun” editing and hanging! See you then!

@@BluegrassBackcountry It is really cool! And I shot it that way accidentally this time, haha. But I purposely didn't correct the angle in post because I thought it gave it an eerie feeling. We'll find a way to make editing fun this weekend, haha. See you then!
