I know it's two years later, but really enjoyed watching your video! Absolutely classic Dolly Sods weather. We took trips to Dolly Sods every Thanksgiving weekend or week after Christmas from about 1979 to 1984. The weather was completely unpredictable then as it was when you were there. I cherish the memories of those trips and your video took me back to those days. Thanks for sharing! 🏕
I always enjoy a comment on an older video, especially from a fellow appreciator of "bad" weather! Your Christmas trips sound like they are worth cherishing for a lifetime. I would have loved to see the Sods back then. I appreciate you taking the time watch and to share your thoughts. Take care!
Your prologues wrench me from the tedium of everyday life. Love the long dissolve. Map overlay detailing route was a nice touch. So many good shots. The slo mo shots of the cracking ice and hopping over the rock fissure really resonated. The Sods in the winter is not for the faint of heart! Amazing job documenting this one. Turned out great!!
Thanks so much! I'm glad to hear that the prologue gave you the effect I was going for. I messed around with it a lot looking for the right vibe. You're right about the Sods in the winter. Even though we didn't get the snow we were looking for, we still had wild weather. And it was without a doubt the muddiest backpacking trip I've ever taken. We had the place almost to ourselves though! I'd love to go back when there's about a foot of snow on the ground. Thanks again for watching and sharing your thoughts!
@@beyondthecampfire you definitely nailed the vibe. Music choice was spot on too... My muddiest trips have also taken place in the Sods. There's no escaping it. Smart move avoiding Dobbins Grade... Nice to have the place to yourselves. I love the solitude of winter.
@@OutdoorOperator This was my third backpacking trip there, and I still haven't done Dobbin Grade, haha. We would have been swimming in it this time. Winter is starting to become my favorite backpacking season. Can't beat the solitude. Thanks again for watching!
I'm glad you like it even though you were done with Christmas 6 weeks ago 😝 I'm also glad you didn't think slow-mo stuff was too self-indulgent, haha. Thanks for watching 😊
Great video brother! Very relaxing! Those winds reminded me of the time Samuel and I were on Brockway Mountain in Copper Harbor, MI! I thought we were going to be blown off the Mountain!
Thanks Nick! I had the same thought on this mountain! I kept having to sit down because I felt like I was going to blow away, haha. Was it Brockway Mountain where Samuel almost went over the edge?
What an incredible episode of Beyond the Campfire!! I keep getting more and more excited for your new “look” your footage brings with that amazing, Big Chungus camera haha. I know I say it a lot, but this one feels like your best yet! I had so many things I enjoyed about this episode of that epic trip of ours! -Never expected an office shot for an intro!! That’s totally unique to see as a start for backpacking videos, but is such a good idea and really brings the journey full circle from start to finish. Did you get any comments filming yourself in your office area from your coworkers?😂 -The lights coming on at the same time you said “Christmas” during your intro narration was a really cool edit -2:09 forgot how dirty my truck got! Wow! -4:37 I totally forgot about that shoe! That sets the stage for the barren and abandoned landscape I felt like we were traversing across. -7:22 That was a great lunch spot. It was a haven to get us out of the wind. -9:05 The lighting you captured at dusk was impeccable. I am transported back to the emotions of searching for that campsite in the near dark! -9:45 your slomo shot of these pines from below is so neat, I felt like I was in a trance while watching it haha -10:40 Those blessed and beloved lights!! They were a gem on this trip, for sure. -11:35 I really like this edit of the captions of my audio across the woods during our conversation. I like the font choice, too. -12:00 you did such a great job incorporating Christmas songs in this video. It really brings the festive nature to this trip and footage. -13:31 leaving the wind in the audio of several of your shots is a good choice, it showcases the brutal conditions that formed this area. -13:59 future prof pic! 😝 -14:33 my inner “make wise choices” sense is being triggered right here in this sequence. Sketchhyyy 😳 -14:50 that wind was pure insanity. You sure captured those conditions with me flapping around like a rag doll. -15:22 I love the closely framed shot of the lion’s head here. It pairs nicely with the wind audio, it almost seems as if the lion is “roaring” at us haha. -15:44 this has to be one of the most drama-inducing scenes in a backpacking video, ever! Us running around to try to avoid the storm is both hilarious and terrifying haha. So glad you caught us being like chickens with our heads cut off haha. -16:00 such a good Christmas song choice here. Fits the drama well. -17:00 splatter of rain on your lens around the same time as the last downbeat of the song is so cool! -19:55 the terrain here looks just plain mean and scary. The landscape and sky were so dark, looks like a snippet from a scary movie! -20:43 the sun star here is amazing! -21:18 those poor, poor shoes! Instead of singing “Silver Bells”, it’s singing “Frozen Shoes” 🤣 -22:12 the unintentional synchronized sleeping bag shaking here is a really neat shot -22:16 the ice crunching under our feet is nuts! -23:32 this “almost” blooper is a good foreshadow of the many quality bloopers to come haha -24:07 Slomo of the ice breaking is wicked cool! -26:24 epiccc shot of us standing on that rock bluff -27:32 that infamous pizza!! Ouch!! 🥵🔥 This was such a great “Type 2 Fun” Christmas video. Even though we didn’t have the snowy backdrop that is typical for Christmas time, your edit gave me all the feelings and emotions associated with the holiday, while being out in the wild. And it’s even more impressive that you captured all these great shots while not feeling great on the trail, either! Super impressed, brother! Bravo, again👏🏻Thanks for inviting me and planning this epic route, can’t wait for our next adventure on the top of LeConte!! 🥶
I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed this one so much! This is probably the first episode that turned out better than I thought it would. Usually I'm all hyped up during editing and then slightly disappointed by the final result. This time I was unimpressed during editing but I like the final product 🤷♂️. Also, I think my color grading is improving a little, so I'm starting to do Big Chungus some justice! -I was very stealthy in my office filming, so no one noticed. Or, at least no one said anything. But they probably will if they watch the video 😂 Originally there was an entire office scene, but I cut most of it. Maybe in the future... - Your truck got almost as filthy as we did in all that mud. - I still want to know more about the mysterious shoe... - I hope that wasn't the last time I/we eat lunch at that spot. It's a great little nook. - Those glowing twilight shots match the feeling of relief I had that it wasn't going to rain on us! - I'm glad you like the effect of the slow-mo pines. That's my favorite shot from this trip. - Every time I see those Christmas lights I feel all warm and fuzzy, haha. - Hopefully there will be more in-the-moment dialogue in the future! As long as I remember to change the batteries in my mic... - I had a tough time deciding how much wind noise I wanted to include. It was so loud in my first render that I had to tone it all down and re-render. But I wanted to keep the effect of it. - "Exclusive behind the scenes footage of Bluegrass Backcountry!" - Thanks for demonstrating the power of that wind 😁 I did not feel safe up there at all. I do think we "made wise choices" in spending most of our time sitting down, at least, haha. - Good point about the roar of Lion's Head! I wish I would have thought of that and made the wind especially loud during that shot. - I couldn't stop laughing when I decided to use Carol of the Bells for that scene of us running around like crazy 🤣 - I'm glad you noticed the splatter of rain on the lens matching up with the music 😉 - That was some mean terrain. It gave me such a strange feeling, too. Probably part of the reason why it felt so nice in the tent that night. - Oh man, I wish I would have thought of Silver Bells and put that song here instead! - The crunching ice sounded like we were walking on broken glass. - I'm glad you didn't fall in, but what a blooper that would have been! 😆 - If this wasn't a Christmas trip, that shot of us at Bear Rocks would have been the thumbnail. Can't wait to see your footage from this part! - I wish I could have filmed our faces when we first tried that pizza 💀 I'm glad I was able to make a video with a good Christmas vibe even without the snow. Better luck next time maybe! Thanks as always for sharing your thoughts, and thanks for joining me on this one. Thanks again for driving too! I'm so excited for LeConte I can barely stand it!
This video was amazing and makes me want to be out there to. I been to spruce knob and black waterfalls areas. I might be up to doing some exploring. Nice adventure during Christmas with the music highlighted the beauty there.
