Mountain climbs make for the best surprise birthday presents 😉 I'm glad you were able to relive it for a little while. As much as we were looking forward to clear views, there's still something special about being in the woods in the fog. It is comforting and peaceful somehow.

Great video! You put it all together so well! I think the bloopers you do at the end of the video are an awesome way to get see the humorous side of you all!
Also- I'm literally the last thing you see in this video, sitting on the bench- the very last blooper lol.

Thank you! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. I always have a ton of fun searching my footage for bloopers. They feel like a nice change of pace after my overly-serious videos, haha.
It was nice meeting you up there. Thanks for making a few cameos, including that one at the end 😁

I'd say you caught Rainbow Falls at peak flow; she was rippin! I like the addition of the cinematic black bars. Great job on the color grade. The shots with water on the lens boosted the immersion. Very cool 👍

Yes she was! That mountain was gushing water everywhere. I'm glad you like the colors. I messed around with a different picture profile on my camera this time, but the fog helped a lot with the lighting and colors too. At first I was annoyed with my lens for getting wet and foggy, but I also like how it makes it feel more immersive. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!

@@themangymarmots The first thing that comes to mind is layers. Bring multiple layers so you can manage your body temperature. Sweating too much in the cold is bad news. Also, I've had good luck with waterproof socks. I wear them over wool socks on very wet, cold trips (such as this one). And then don't be afraid to go overkill on your sleeping bag/pad. You can always scale it back on future trips if it's too warm. Sorry, that's three 😁

You totally knocked it out of the park with this one, Chad!! This is without question your best video to date. The explosion of colors, the setting, the narration, it all fit so well together. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it two times over!! I have several thoughts, buckle up haha:

-0:04 The addition of the owls in the opening is an awesome touch. I hope you find more ways to incorporate different wildlife during these sequences
-You do a great job summarizing the entire trip in the opening, but I particularly love the phrase “boreal temple”. So cool to this setting for this trip.
-1:01 What a segue from the actual clouds to your intro fog animation! About as seamless as they come!

-1:25 I think I’m picking up on your narration style on this video. Correct me if Im wrong, but you find a way to poetically introduce each major scene change in the trip, and then cease from speaking after that point to let the shots speak for themselves, right? Cool touch.

-1:49 I really like this fast montage of shots in the motel. Showcases the frantic nature of making sure we’re all packed before heading out into the wilderness.

-2:24 “9 mile, 4,000 ft journey?!!? Sheesh! Even hearing you say it in a VoiceOver is still mind boggling.
-3:13 Jeez the fog on this trip and what you were able to capture from your camera is captivating.

-3:23 “cauldron of inverted cloud” Very cool alliteration here.

-4:19 another thing I wanted to mentioned before I forgot at this point is how good all the music selections are in this episode. Did you get everything from UA-cam? There are several tracks on here that I am not familiar with, but they were excellent accompaniments to the landscapes featured.

-4:51 The visibility here looks as heavy here as it did during our trudge through the snow at Cumberland Gap! We have some type of magic of inviting the craziest weather conditions as a group.

-5:06 Now that I know how you pulled this shot off editing wise, it makes it even cooler to see real time in the video.

-6:21 It’s shots like these that make me happily jealous of your sweet 14-140 lens. So versatile to get that nice, tight framing of the mtn.
-6:44 Gosh the motion blur of Grotto Falls in the background is unreal. I really need to incorporate this 1/180 setting on my camera now haha

-7:41 “Provider of fine dining with a view.” So True, and great descriptor.

-8:23 Slomo choice here for the falls pan was impeccable.
-10:40 I love this sombering music along with this unbelievable shots of the rainy, misty mtns. One of my favorite sequences in this episode.
-11:10 I feel like we look like were are Canada or Alaska right now!
-11:56 Im really glad you left these clips with visible water on your lens here. It showcases the desperation that I was feeling of wanting to be done for the day and get out of the rain, and the unavoidable nature that the rain was posing to our reality while filming. Great choice here.
-13:11 I’m a little embarrassed to say this, but I totally had to google what “Autochthonous “ meant here, but Im super glad I did. Really cool word choice here.

-13:51 I love seeing the joy on Nick’s face here. He KNOWS we are close to camp haha.
-14:08 Your mic totally picked up these crow sounds so well here. I totally don’t remember hearing them while we were up there haha.
-14:55 “uniter of strangers, renewer of brotherhood.” Such a cool and true statement for shelters while backpacking!
-15:54 I think this scene of us trying to rationalize how to sleep up in that loft together is hilarious and so humbling at the same time. Every part of backpacking in a group is a team effort, even down to the shared sleeping arrangements haha.
-I don’t really have a specific timestamp here, but the whole shelter sequence from arriving to sleeping was pure backpacking magic
-18:06 Also jealous in the best possible way with your bird shots in this episode. Something I’ve not been able to incorporate well in my videos, yet.
-18:54 Love the BTC Easter egg, especially with knowing the backstory behind it!

-19:07 Cool that you caught this shot with Bradley. What a cool dude to share the shelter with!

    -21:34 Profile Pic!

-21:42 Gosh I love this slomo over the tops of these rocks at the overlook, with the rain pattering on the lens. Slomo is the freaking best!

-22:55 I love this moss with the shallow depth of field in the background. Im a sucker for that sweet bokkeehhhhh

-23:18 This is prolly my second favorite song in the video. Gives off such a cool feeling with the scenery, especially in this war-torn forest that endured fire damage.

-24:29 “Gauntlet of water crossings” You got that right!!

-25:10 This shot of the ferns here is one of my fovorites too. The color and contrast are astounding.

-25:39 I gotta get me some of that waterfall motion blur!!

-27:53 Those are the faces of some weary, but satisfied backpackers, right there

-28:03 “Balm of sore, sodden feet” There isn’t a more true statement about the emotions the car bring after a long trip haha

-28:11 “Ending, and beginning” What a good line to close this trip! The ending of one journey paves the way for a new one down the horizon, both on trail and in life. Such truth here!

-29:09 Can’t be a more fitting face with this depressing blooper hahahahaha

-29:59 “Big Chungus is getting wet” BAHAHAHAHA TWSS
-
30:04 For this blooper I was inspired by The Office scene of Michael Scott reenacting scenes from the Blair Witch Project. Enjoy :) ua-cam.com/video/_aBw281687I/v-deo.html

-30:13 “Please like a subscribe!” YES! You deserve all the traffic with this episode.

Well done, well done brother!! This is my favorite BTC edition to date. It was an absolute pleasure to watch and rewatch. I feel honored to be friends with such a high quality person and videographer. Thanks for embossing this trip into my memory with all these amazing shots. Can’t wait for the next one!!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share all of your thoughts! I really appreciate the detailed feedback, and I loved going back through and looking at all the little things you picked out (many of which were also the things I like about it 😁). I was probably more excited about this video than any other so far, so I'm glad to hear that it worked so well for you. Allow me to reply to some of your points, if you don't mind:
0:04 You read my mind. I've already got something in mind for my next one 😉
1:25 Yep! That's half of it 😉 The narration is also entirely made of epithets/descriptive phrases. I thought giving myself a restriction might help breed some creativity!
1:49 I've been wanting to do this motel montage since our last Smokies trip, haha. I'll have to try it again at some point.
3:13 I've always liked the fog, but now I like it even more after seeing how nice it made my footage look, haha.
4:19 These are all UA-cam Music deep cuts! I don't want to talk about how much time I spend agonizing over music decisions......
6:21 The 14-140 is my cheapest lens, but that thing has been such a workhorse for me. I just need to get better about remembering to switch it out in low light... Also, you are free to borrow any lens you want now that we're all 100% compatible!
6:44 Waterfalls (and campfires) make very good demonstrations of the effect of different shutter speeds. I've messed around with both quite a bit.
10:40 This track pretty much set the tone for my entire video.
11:56 You know, at first I was disappointed that several of my shots were "ruined" by moisture on the lens, but I ended up really liking the effect. In fact, I like it so much that I might purposefully dirty up my lens in the future 😁
13:51 I know that look on Nick's face very well, and I'm glad I could include it, haha.
14:08 I was impressed with the old Rode mic on this trip. It picked up our conversations really well too.
15:54 I thought the loft shot was funny too. And very representative of the minor struggles of sleeping in a shelter, haha. I have so much footage of our time at the shelter that I could probably make a standalone video out of it. Which... isn't a terrible idea, actually. I love watching camp scenes, and this one makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
19:07 I had to include Bradley! He commented and pointed out that he's the last thing you see in the last blooper, which is pretty funny 😁
21:42 I'm in love with slowmo 😍 I have to restrain myself from obnoxiously overusing it.
24:29 Those waterproof socks were the best decision I made on this trip, haha.
25:10 When I went through my footage, I was stunned by how much color there was on a dreary February weekend.
27:53 There's no faking those expressions!
28:03 Before I started backpacking, I always thought of the end of a trip as a sad event. Now I've learned to appreciate the end almost as much as the beginning. 10 years ago, I never imagined how much of a relief it can be to see your car!
      29:09 Dead inside.
      29:59 😏
30:04 I forgot about that scene 🤣 I'm getting some ideas for next year's April Fool's video...
Thank you again for spending the time to watch multiple times and share your thoughts. It made my day. And the pleasure is all mine, my friend! I can't wait for your next video and our next trip!
