    Hey Caleb, I love this video!
    The only problem I have is that it's already 2019 and I'd like to see an updated version. A pinned comment with all of the changes would be enough in my opinion. ( I'm not the only one who is interested in an update )
    Best regards

      I use the Aputure 672 kit. It's not complete, so I bought the Manfrotto lights stands and a Manfrotto light stand adapters (Umbrella swivels). I'm really happy with the Aputure lights so far, except for the fact they get quite hot during shooting. Also, I have the 198 on-camera lights. Superb quality and it comes in a high-quality case.

      I vote for $1000 someday too! With the same goals of portability and flexibility, but assuming you are beyond beginner and ready to make a serious investment that will last years.
      Meanwhile this particular video is great. I really appreciate all the practical information you include, and the way it is so clearly presented. Your videos are right up with the best in the photo video realm from what I've seen.
      Tacking a question on - have you tried these type of lights with an umbrella softbox? I already have a couple and really like them for photo - Neewer makes really affordable ones, which I'm sure you are aware of.

  • @aarondyer.pianist

    Caleb, I am so grateful for your videos. I have gotten quite an education the past couple of days. The short version of my story is that I am an amateur classical pianist and a friend of mine who is in film and TV recorded a solo performance of mine. I learned a lot of what to do and what not to do from him. Live classical performances are definitely not his thing. I'm looking at the $500 (or the $250) for a couple of reasons. First the raised piano lid provides a natural barrier so I was thinking of the larger panel to spot from the end toward me. The other two would be on either side of me. Not sure where, exactly. There is plenty of overhead lighting on the stage, so that is not a problem. I need to handle ugly shadows that one sees all the time in piano videos, and provide a decent spot that doesn't wash me out. I will be recording with a few HD cameras. If you or anyone in this discussion has some experience in this I'd love to hear about it.

  • @theSUBVERSIVE
    @theSUBVERSIVE 7 років тому

    I would like to see you exploring the potential of this channel and by that I don't mean to drift away from your DIY content or these so much needed tests. No other channel covers these little things that are so important and often overlooked by others lost in just camera comparisons.
    But that said, I would like to see you doing some more camera reviews and comparisons, trying to talk with B&H or Adorama to get some review units. I would love to see your take and tests on that, which would also help your channel grow, attract more audience because the people that watch the camera tests will certainly appreciate this other content that you are doing.
    I basically follow every photo/video channel I can find out there and your channel is the only one I truly enjoy, you don't rush to be trendy, your videos have content and well thought tests and comparisons. I think your DIY skillset gives you an interesting POV and technical background that some others don't have.
    Tony and Chelsea, Dave, Max Yuriev, etc. They can't quite top your content, at times their tests and comparisons either lack methodology or depth. Sometimes it's the lack of technical information to do a proper explanation and tests, other times it's because the content is rushed to be one of the first to talk about something or do some comparisons. A lot of people might not mind but I think that I would rather have a great well thought content that I can learn from rather than keep perpetuating little mistakes that will end up being replicated more and more.
    But this is not to punish mistakes or that I don't enjoy their content, everyone can make mistakes but at some level, I started to expect a bit more, I expect to learn more than correcting little mistakes, even more so when it happens for either lack of research, for rushing things or for getting into camera speculation without little sense of reality. I know, I'm those that set the bar high but I do so because I want to see them grow and grow together but I can't fully enjoy when I see some of these things.
    Again, I'm not here to badmouth anybody, otherwise I wouldn't follow their content, but I can see the growth potential of your channel if you bring just a bit more of camera reviews and I think you can set a new standard for camera comparisons and tests.
    Thanks!

    • @dslrvideoshooter
      @dslrvideoshooter  7 років тому

      Thanks for the feedback! I would love to do more camera reviews, but they take a lot of time and that would lower my video output. I also need to come up with more subject matter. I'm mostly a studio shooter which makes for boring content. Need to book some trips with cameras :-)

    • @theSUBVERSIVE
      @theSUBVERSIVE 7 років тому

      +DSLR Video Shooter I don't think people think it's boring, it's just not as appealing for a general public, on the other hand this content is very needed and appreciate by anyone getting more serious into vide production and it's something that you can't really find out there with the same level of details and depth.
      But yeah, I understand it's not easy to fit the UA-cam production output and balance that with in-depth time consuming reviews. But either way, I think there might be a way, sure, it would be challenging and you'll need to try different ways but even if it's half-vlog, half-review, there mighr be ways that you can get into that a bit. I mean, some cameras you don't have to go as in-depth as others or maybe you can have a video just to compare cameras to complement the reviews instead of making comparisons and tests in every review.
      I also understand that being one-man crew it becomes even harder but I think that there might be an interesting solution out there to try. Maybe even do some user experience shorts while you are on production, I don't know.

    biggest challenge for me is shaping the light in tight spaces and being portable. I ended with 2x 672's and a H198 for my kit. used D-fuse softboxes but still too harsh for my liking. added grids but that cut the light down too much. I might look into Came-tv boltzen or aputure COB lights so I can throw proper modifiers on it.

    This is really great, your recent videos are spot on with what I wished I had found a couple of years ago when I started doing research for the other no so glamorous equipment for a small production.
    Right now I'm thinking about a YN600, YN300 and 2x YN216. I also have a YN600 Air, so I just need the 2x YN216 that I got to know from a recent video of yours. I have a few different size 5-in-1 kits and the diffuser material as well. I also have some normal fluorescent lights with Japanese lantern or for a lightbox I have, which is pretty good for product shot.
    I would like to ask you to put eBay links of the same or similar item because people outside US can't get the Amazon ones. My major issue is battery, which can be very tricky, the difference between a good and a bad one is night and day, in terms of accurate specs, charge, quality, everything.
    So it would be good to know which brands are trustworthy or not. When I can and someone is travelling through US I always buy and ask them to bring those DSTE batteries but I don't quite know which one to trust on eBay. A lot of the good ones from Amazon are not always there on eBay as well.

    Hello Caleb, great video! I think I've watched it 5 times already. I bought the HR672S and I believe it's an amazing light, but when I went to buy the AL-H198 I saw that they didn't provide a power cable and totally turned me off. Do you think two AL-528 will work instead? Also, since the 672 is Spot, should the others be Wide?

    Hi Caleb! Great video. I mainly shoot talking head interviews. Would you recommend the S or W version of the HR672 for that purpose?

    These videos are amazing, love how you're so knowledgeable and practical all at the same time!
    I am buying some of these lights as well, do I go through this UA-cam to make sure you get a commission?
    Also the led you used as the key light for this video with the diffusion material, could you use the Yongnuo YN600 instead since it has a built in diffuser? Or is the output really low?

    Ha! This is my exact current light setup! (i use Rosco diffusion the 'filmmakers diffusion pack') and scrims from Matthews. I love it,was trying to save up to get the Aputure tri8's when they come out until I saw the new HeloLux lights.... I've decided to spring for those instead of getting more aputure lights. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE aputure and their lights they're so affordable... but man the HeloLux is just too good a deal for what you get. Thanks for this Caleb, good to know I actually had a decent setup haha right off the bat.

      Nice! Yeah those Hexolux lights had me drooling when their first came out. Much to rich for my blood though. Hot ass light for sure!

    Awesome video and well done! Looks like really nice lights. How would those lights work as fill outside? Sometimes I shoot over an overhang by the background is blow out. Do they have enough output to balance? Thanks!

    This is awesome, Do you have any sort of recommendations for lighting that you can take on the go. I've been really interested in trying to take one big bag for all my gear including a dslr and a few lens, and some audio equipment as well
