Handmade Hero: an amazing aircraft
In 2019 the Australian War Memorial acquired “659”, the P3 Orion transferred by RAAF in support of the National Collection. The Orion is notable for its handcrafted manufacture, lack of automated systems, and reliance on the highly developed skills and training of its crew.
Orion’s have played an essential role during the Cold War, over the Middle East, and on Search and Rescue missions. In Handmade Hero, Orion crew members of RAAF’s 10 Squadron share their recollections, highlighting the place of 659 in Australia’s history.
