What an episode! This series has been phenomenal. That moment with seemingly cold husband to Mariko but badass stoic samurai warrior Toda “Buntaro” Hirokatsu delaying the attackers by fighting them on the docks to secure Lord Toranaga’s safe escape was the emotional epic chef’s kiss moment of the episode. Episode 3 was the first truly frenetic & action packed episode of the series. Man, it was powerful & emotion. Toranaga yelling his name while bowing in reverence & respect as Buntaro fell to a knee & bowed was so emotional. Then we saw Buntaro’s & Mariko’s face as it is assumed this was the last gaze between the two which was rough however fraught their marriage had been up to now. So good.🙂👍.
And that boat race between Rodrigues in the Portugese Black Ship & Blackthorn in Lord Toranga’s galley was epic especially the colorful banter between the two. The first two episode were a great setup but we not only got more setup & insight into all the political intrigue & machinations happening between the various factions but loads of action & emotional moments in this wonderful episode. I think this was just a first sample of more yet to come.
This remake has large shoes to fill as the book was a beloved bestseller & cultural phenomena. The 1980’s tv mini series was a groundbreaking show that was innovative as one of the first truly epic tv mini series shows to grace televisions. It really introduced Japan & ancient Japanese culture via a fictional but historically inspired tv show based on the book to the US.
Japan had been am enigmatic country to the West as for much of its history it was insular. As Japanese brands like Sony, Honda & Toyota became household names Japanese culture increasingly got transmitted to the US via Nintendo, karate, sushi, anime, samurai movies, etc Now we are steeped in Japanese culture but Shogun was one of the influential vanguards that brought awareness of Japan & Japanese to the US. So it is more than just a tv show as it had cultural & social significance.
This remake is a love letter to that show as groundbreaking, beloved, good & important as the first one was. They honor it with all the expected reverence you’d expect from the Japanese. By the way, I am a born & bred New Yorker & total Northern Yank American but I am half-Japanese as my mother was from Japan so I have some attachment to it & pride in it. I Am American but part of my heritage is Japanese so I am always grateful to learn more facts, history, etc about Japan. the show is not only epically entertaining but they try to be faithful to the culture. Everything has been superlative from the acting to the set design to the costumes to the story telling & to the cinematography. I have really enjoyed it but I am so glad that it seems like the majority of people are really loving it despite only being partially in English. That’s the beauty with good art or film; it transcends language & transmits culture, emotion, & feeling. The only thing that sucks is waiting a week for the next episode but luckily we got two to start out & 10 in total so it looks like we get a real nice treat. Couldn’t have come at a better time because a lot of TV has been underwhelming of late.
Thanks to all the YT content creators of reviewers, reactors, et al covering the show which gives us some stuff to watch while we wait for the next episode. I’m thrilled it has turned out better than it could have been imagine & that people are enthusiastically covering it & enjoying it. It’s been a fun ride so far & I am thank to everyone for putting in a lot of effort & hard work in making their Shogun content. So thank you!🙂👍

She's not a samurai but she is from a samurai family where the women would be trained to fight and defend themselves.

Bro, I grew up watching your videos. I don't really watch much UA-cam anymore but I hope you're doing well. You always seemed like such a nice guy to me. I hope life is treating you well. If not, me neither, but we got it!
