You can hear her explain how a woman's sex hormones oestradiol, progesterone and testosterone all work as neurotransmitters in the brain. They affect the way our brains work and function.
The incidence of clinical depression increases during the perimenopause and menopause. 280 million women worldwide have clinical depression - 50% more women than men.
Taking the right dose and type of HRT can improve mental health symptoms and can also be taken with antidepressants.

I'm so glad I've found these videos and information. I have PTSD and ADHD. I also work permanent night shifts. I'm struggling so badly that I feel like I don't want to be here anymore. I truly believe that perimenopause is exacerbating my ADHD symptoms, coupled with the lack of sleep. I'm almost 49. I've struggled for years, particularly since I was sterilised when I was 44. My bloods came back 'normal'. I'm not normal. Far from it.
I'm binge watching all of these documentaries and videos.
Thank you for all you do.

Karen, I also have ADHD and at 68 am discovering that the HRT I have been on has needed adjustment. Please don’t give up! You need HRT if you have had a surgical menopause in your 40’s. It puts one at much higher risk for osteoporosis and dementia in later years. Don’t take “no” for an answer! Your hormones are your RIGHT to have replaced and adjusted!

Could you do an episode on women over 60. I have just restarted on low dose as recommended. I am 62. I would be interested on how to gradually increase. What checks you should have if any before doing so. Can I swap to patches. How to include testosterone if needed. What dose. Can gp prescribe it in England. What health checks should be maintained whilst taking it. Eg uterus, blood pressure and how often.

As with everything you share, this has been incredibly educational. I so greatly appreciate you! You are the reason at 54 I finally started HRT a few weeks ago! It took almost a year to find someone that was even open to natural body identical hormones. My Gp offered Premarin and antidepressants. Thankfully I’m more educated about HRT thanks to you and politely declined. The sad thing is she was clearly older than me and openly shared with me she didn’t know much about it HRT. 🙄 My current OBGYN was pretty lost about the info I was asking about HRT too. At least they prescribed me some to try. I had to really push to get it ! I’m concerned about them knowing the best amounts since I remember you said it’s a balance of knowing how much to prescribe together. I honestly don’t think they have any idea…😬
I just have to thank you again for helping me educate myself on something so important!!!!

Through Newson Health you can take the course, (and recommend it to your OBGYN!) “Confidence in the Menopause”…as a lay person you can take this very affordable course! It will help you in advocating for yourself and treating symptoms rather than focusing exclusively on labs. ☺️

My deepest gratitude for the wealth of information, even more for being a voice that screams out in the wilderness for women's desperate need to be treated as a whole and not as organ parts...I sadly went through a total hysterectomy at age 47 wast not prescribed HRT and spiraled to a deep depression along with an attack of migraines that last for 9 months day and night, and to make a very long story short, attempt to commit suicide, my blessed fortune my husband got a hold of a GP has been treating me with HRT and now I can enjoy my body and soul connectivity...if I would not had such horrific experience and how the lack of knowledge, experience and understanding in some medical care, well let's say it's unbelievable until....

You are a god send. I’ve learned so much watching your videos in the past few months and this is helping me advocating for myself. As someone who suffered from a serious post natal depression and not being well taken care of by the medical system when I didn’t know better, I can tell péri ménopause feels quite similar. Except that today i feel empowered. Thank you for doing what you do.

Thoughts for future talks...I'm 68 and have suffered *terribly* from cognitive and mood issues; excellent health, extensive tests are all normal. So I just started HRT last week (menopause at 55, so I'm 13 yrs out). I'm so glad to see/hear so much information now for younger women approaching and early in menopause, but scant information about starting HRT beyond that *magic* ten year window. From my digging, I've missed optimal benefit, but I *think* there is still benefit from starting it, on various fronts. My quality of life has gone (in the last 5 yrs) from ~90% great--loving life, to maybe around ~20% or so--struggling to just get through my days, so this is so, so huge for me. And then I think of the whole generation of women who were denied HRT, I'd love to hear a push for information out to them. I have a girlfriend, my age, who suffers in agony from hot flashes/sweats--to this day, of course I'm now telling her about this. Anyway, I just don't have words to thank you enough for all of this information you're putting out there in the world to help us!!

You are on the right track. I’m 68 and even though I have been on some form of HRT since I was 52, my hormones desperately needed adjustment this past year with genitourinary symptoms kicking in with ferocity. I finally found a doctor who will prescribe systemic estrogen AND systemic testosterone for me in addition to the progesterone I’ve been on. Also, adding in Intrarosa in the form of vaginal pessaries. Next week I’ll be seeing a doctor about vaginal Fotona laser treatment to help restore the vaginal lining. Adding in Testosterone has hugely relieved the anxiety I’ve struggled with since my late 30’s!

I just started HRT last week, at age 68. Primarily cognitive and mood symptoms; excellent health otherwise. Two questions I have: so then I really need to give the start and each change thereafter at least a full 3 months to test out? and, 2) I wasn't quite clear if a specified delivery method crossed the bbb better than another? --did rectal administration cross the bbb better than oral? Great talk, great much-needed information! Can't thank you enough!

Thanks Louise...you asked about ideas for other topics. I am age 53 and on continuous hrt...evorel patch and vaginal utrogestan plus testosterone and struggling with low mood/irritability since taking progesterone daily. My doctor suggested the Mirena coil but that is synthetic and I can't see how that would improve my mood. Can you do a session exploring this dichotomy?! Thanks and Best wishes, Cathy

What about Endo and Adenomyosis? I have both and my gyno was reluctant to give me HRT as said my symptoms could be from this, rather than peri-menopause and taking HRT could just make these conditions worse. So then I saw another gyno who said the doses I would start on would be so low they wouldn't make Endo etc worse, which I can accept, however what if my symptoms are more related to the fact I have Endo and Adenomyosis as I've read they can cause fatigue, depression, general feeling of being unwell etc. Can you also please explain why some women are sensitive to progesterone?

You touched upon being able to use HRT for PMS/PMDD, can you expand on how it would be taken for this purpose and how testosterone would slot into this way of using it?
I was prescribed HRT due to extreme fatigue and early morning waking. I have always suffered from severe PMS but it feels like its getting worse with age (im currently 43)
I stopped the HRT as after a year the bloating and sore breasts would not settle, I was also ravenously hungry and gaining weight. Is it the estrogen or the progesterone that causes this?
Im currently on nothing but have overhauled my diet completely, high protein, lots of veg, and now have enough energy to exercise again. However, my appointment to see a specialist finally came through after a year on the waiting list and Ive finally managed to get testosterone for libido but she said I still need to take it with progesterone as the long term effects of Testosterone for women are still not known so I still need to protect the lining of my womb, so Im about to embark on taking just the progesterone (for sleep) and testosterone alongside it. Is this a good idea or shall I go back to the estrogen again?
Do I still need to take the progesterone daily (as prescribed, no 3 day break for some reason) if I am just taking testosterone every 3 days, or shall I start to take the oestrogen again because I have read that Testosterone works better along side estrogen, but my specialist said Testosterone will only convert to estrogen anyway so Im a bit confused.
I feel like the bloating and breast pain is my bodies way of saying I have too much of either progesterone or estrogen so Id like to maby try it just when I feel the worst which is before my period. (Which are still regular by the way) the bloating and breast pain are very troublesome.

How do you know if the HRT is making anxiety, depression worse

It’s important to make sure the HRT is truly body identical. For me, including systemic Testosterone these past two months has hugely decreased the anxiety I’ve struggled with since my late 30’s. Low thyroid can also cause depression and anxious feelings. So, if you are on HRT, including testosterone and still suffering, you may need higher doses and/or consider a complete thyroid panel.
