Thank you, James! I'd like to bring you over a banana puddin' for that answer :-) If you listen to the news, you'd think the South is in a full on race war.
I keep coming back to this, it's a top 10 SNL sketch. Tom Hanks gives it the gravitas, but Kenan is the star. Also "he got teeth don't he" is gold from Leslie Jones
I love that you can see Tom Hanks almost break when he says "You people are fun... can I say that?" such a classic bit. My favorite cast member (Kenan) combined with one of my favorite guests (Tom Hanks) makes for pure gold, man.
HAH!! Exactly...United Arab Emirates: I know who they are in this soap opera but I had a blank spot the other day. I was watching a commercial and Jennifer Anniston was doing a commercial for Emmerites Airlines. She never or I hardly ever see her do commercials. It was just one of those weird things that just didnt sit right. Isnt that airline owned by Saudi Arabia? It didnt sit right, weird.
My take away is that people are 90% the same but the rest of the 10% really start defining who we are, in a lot of ways. This is why all the contestants were equally picking off the answers throughout the game show and why, when it came to Final Black Jeopardy, Doug was clearly going to lose and the host and other contestants clearly took issue with it. Black people feel marginalized and the single white guy couldn't see it from this perspective. But, I definitely agree with you that this was hilarious and ballsy.
David Lor Let me ask you something. Since the installment (or election) of the countless black aldermen/women in the black neighborhoods, how much better have those neighborhoods fared economically, safety, and crime wise? Was there the improvement that was supposed to have been seen? I havent seen it. It just looks to me that the only blacks that had an improvement were those elected and their own inner circles. The rest stayed the same.
David Lor your comment just goes back to Berk's original point that people are actually separated by class and not by race.... If a black person feels marginalized it is largely because of some notion instilled into them from this idea of being part of a "black community" that is separate from the mainstream American culture at large. The political class both fosters and utilizes this exactly so that it can create the conditions where we believe ourselves, as a society, to be separated by race. So in a way we really are separated by race, at least apparently, but this separation is artificial and contrived having been created so that we don't become wise to the fact that it is only class that is separating us, naturally, in truth, in our so-called "classless society". This is why working class people of all races intuitively understand that the game is rigged and they are being conspired against. The real conspiracy is, of course, nothing like they imagine, but what they imagine has been fueled by the unconscious awareness of what is really happening to them.
Besides the fact that this is very intelligently written, Keenan finding the timing and tone to be both the straight guy *and* the ridiculous one is amazing. He makes it look effortless when he perhaps only had a rehearsal or two. The precise look on his face and the way he agrees in surprise absolutely sells it, and he performs it live. I'm actually one of the few that isn't big on Keenan but I'm starting to realize it's because when he does everything he makes it look absolutely natural.
Absolutely! I was just thinking I think of this as a Tom Hanks skit but his character, while a caricature, is almost a straight man. It’s Keenan that completely sells it with timing and reactions.
Tom Hanks, a top film star, went out of his way to take SNL seriously and perform within their format rather than trying to take over the show. He blended into the ensemble perfectly.
As an actor, I say without a doubt, they were all great artists in the sketch; SNL has been one of the top performance shows for decades, run by legendary Lorne Michaels. Everyone that gets to perform on it, is either at the top or on their way to the top of their game. Of course, the very top is hardest to reach, unless you're an idiot, like nick stix
Keenan is a comedic genius. His reactions to Doug were amazing, and I was dying when he said that he's "transported" when Tyler Perry puts on a muumuu. He might be the single best current SNL cast member, though Cecily Strong is also great.
Tom Hanks is the male Meryl Streep. Doesn't matter what the part is, he nails it every time! He just needs to do a lip sync battle to cement his legacy now.

Any 90s kid who watched Nickelodeon back in the day can tell you this! I still remember when I'd watch Kenan and Kel, and All That, and I'd think to myself who would one day be an official SNL cast member. I was so happy when I found out Kenan was joining SNL, I felt like a proud parent!!
I really think this sketch is going to go down as one of the all-time greats. Obviously Hanks was amazing, but I really loved Kenan's "Yes!" reactions to Doug's responses. Pitch perfect. And the girls did great too. And really it's the not-so-subtle suggestion that so many of us are in the same boat without realizing it that I think will make it remembered and quoted for a long time. Always makes me laugh.
Well written, very well acted (by all), exceptionally topical & incisive ... agree that it's up there with the all time SNL greats. Hope Keenan stays awhile - he's right up there with Phil Hartman as the nearly perfect anchor to any sketch.

I used to work with guys n ladies like 'Tom' at a trucking company, they were very racist, but when I had a problem, it was one of them who helped me 100%!
It's the fact he played him subtle. I think most actors would make that character over the top but Tom played him so believable that everyone can recognize that uncle/cousin/neighbor (or even themselves) in the character. The goal of the sketch was to see that there was lot more middle ground in the African Americana and poor white experience than people really think of (but ended, still using comedy, with the biggest thing that divides, racism).
THANK GOD FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOUR NEIGHBOR BECAUSE HE PROBABLY FOUGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS TO PUT DOWN PEOPLE WHO ARE PATRIOTIC!!!! PEOPLE LIKE U ARE THE HATEFUL ONES NOT TRUMP SUPPORTERS DO U SEE ANY OF THEM DOING SHIT LIKE THIS HELL NO!! WE HAVE MUCH MORE CLASS THAN THESE UGLY PEOPLE!!!!!!

Tom Hanks is great obviously, but can we acknowledge once again how Kenan Thompson is just the most consummate SNL workhorse? he can sell any line, make any skit work, makes every character better. he's just automatic. like Tracy Morgan. like Chris Farley.

Tom Hanks is great in this, but Kenan is what really makes it.
Yup. The government is out to track us.
As a black man living in the south who knows MAGAs, the skit really does illustrate how much rural whites and blacks have in common.
And how much nonsense each had been told about the other
Thank you, James!

"Mm... I Don't Know" keeps me coming back, lol. That and when Doug pulls away from the host then relaxes and shakes his hand, lmfao too funny.
You better give me some money so I can buy some scratch offs!
i mean he do got teeth
Agreed. Hanks is great in the role, but it's really Kenan who drives this sketch home.
definitely top ten SNL sketch for sure.
I love that you can see Tom Hanks almost break when he says "You people are fun... can I say that?" such a classic bit. My favorite cast member (Kenan) combined with one of my favorite guests (Tom Hanks) makes for pure gold, man.
Most underrated line in this is "when we come back, we'll play the national anthem and just see what the hell happens"
I have to say that i probably played this at least 15 times before it dawned on me.
When was that?

@B O B Spelled backwards Really can't tell if you're being sarcastic my guy
This sketch perfectly illustrates that people are more separated by class than by race. Hilarious and ballsy.
I see the same change in other communities as well. What do you suppose is the culprit to this lack of change? And how can we address it?
Tom Hanks' comedic timing and delivery is impecable.
Yes!
People forget that he was a comedy actor back in the day.
@@barnhib He was a stand up comedian before that

This is still one of SNLs best skit. Such a clever take on how similar people of all walks really are.

Kenan has very strong improv chops. He stays in the moment and keeps it real.
