  • As I drove home from the dealership, I did an impromptu MPG test with speeds ranging 65-75 mph on interstates and highways. Granted my engine wasn't even broken in yet, but I figured it'd be interesting to see what MPG I get on the new 6.6L L8T gas engine with 10-speed Allison transmission.

    Still less $ than diesel even at 15mpg. Say $1 per gallon less every fillup. 35 gallons or so each time. Also you can buy a lot of gas for $10,000 you saved buying a gas version over diesel. Its a win-win. No D.E.F. No diesel fuel filters every year. $100 oil changes instead of $400-500. All adds up to a big saving. I sold my 2022 Ram 2500 cummins and went to gas too. I like it so much more. Good choice.

    • @AdventureRocks
      @AdventureRocks  7 місяців тому +4

      Great points. Agreed, I think diesel is more about the towing experience, than economy. Those who argue for diesel being more economical than gas really have a losing argument all the way around. Unless you're a hotshot driver doing 50K+ mi per year while towing I suppose, right? I've been very happy with my gasser so far.

      Also these motors don’t have AFM like the 1500s and they drop lifters every 60k. I think it is a solid choice if you plan to keep it long term. The maintenance is cheaper. Plus the $10k you saved.

    My gmc 3500 4x4 crew cab long bed. 6.6 gasser has really impressed me. They have got this pickup dialed in for just about everything. Best 32 miles average 19.6 mpg. My average with bed loaded with 3600# has been faithfully 14.3 mpg. Yet to pull my goosneck loads. But so far so good. I have owned ram cummings since 1992. I did pull a bumper pull trailer at dealership they let me pull a chevy 2500 for about 50 miles and it was in higher elevation of colorado. Was impressed with the pulling. So it sold me.

    When new, change the oil at 500 to 1000 miles. You need to eliminate elevated levels of factory silicon sealants and initial wear metals. After that, 6000 mile or 8 months, whichever comes first. I use Mobil 1 from Walmart and a quality new filter. Almost all the engines you see junked at 100,000 miles followed factory 10,000 mile factory recommended intervals. including Toyotas. Keep you own sticker on your sun visor because a replaced windshield means starting over. Keep extra filters and tools dedicated to this job in a proper oil drain pan so everything is easy close at hand. You can do the job yourself in less time than it takes to drive to crooked auto service where they put in $1 per quart oil that will varnish your engine, and charge you for full synthetic.

The box was not covered which makes it LESS aerodynamic, so we could have had better mpgs had it been covered. We climbed 7700 feet but went down just as much. Average altitude above sea level was about 750 feet meaning oxygen content of the air was reduced by 2 percent on average. Gasoline was standard 87 octane. I have the same truck and it definitely likes to be around 60-65 when cruising for the best MPG. You can see your RPMs up around 1800-1900 at 75, whereas you'll be in the lower 1000s at 60-65. Probably depends on where you live and the highway speed limit, but in my state the highest speed limit on freeways is typically 65.

    The final drive ratio is unchanged. The 10 speed only added better power/torque management through the shift pattern for the gasser. Basically gave it better up to speed use from the gasser. Economy will be no different from the 6 spd.

    • @melrose9252
      @melrose9252 6 місяців тому +2

      The 10 speed has lower 1st 4:54 compared to 4.03 in the 6 speed and Reverse ratios in the 10 are 4:54 to 1 compared to the 6 speeds 3.06 to 1. Amazing difference when backing a heavy load. The 10 speed has a slightly higher gear (lower ratio) in the 10 gear than the 6 in 6 gear. The mpg difference between my 22 gas 6 speed and my 24 gas 10 is not noticeable.

    My previous 2018 Silverado 6.0 gasser got about 14.5 unloaded with wind at your back on the highway. My 2020 Silverado Duramax gets 23-24 on the highway unloaded. From what people say (on youtube reviews) the 10 speed does not make a difference in mpg. However, I would think being in the right gear at all times is what makes this gasser worth it versus the diesel or previous 6 speed.

    • @mkbmj

But once you slow down or speed up great changes and what shows there is no longer current as the L mode is showing the highest limiting gear basically and defaults to current when you shift to L.

    • @AdventureRocks
      @AdventureRocks  6 місяців тому

      At first I liked the RAM seats in my 21 Laramie better, but after a couple months driving the GMC I like them a lot. Having a lumbar is a must for me, and GMC delivers there. It's possible the higher trim levels have even more bolstering and support, but I'm quite content with the cloth seats in my SLE.

      TFL usually only does short (either 100 or ~60 mile) loops for most of their MPG testing. Pretty easy to have a small anomaly cause a big difference with such a short test. I don't remember them doing a 6.6 gas/10 speed yet, but I might have forgot about it.
